Warwick, N.Y. - Ann M. Nau, of Warwick, died on Thursday, August 12, 2004, at Schervier Pavilion, Warwick. She was 83 years old. Born on June 8, 1921 in Union City, New Jersey, she was the daughter of Nicholas Di Taranti and Jennie Claudio Di Taranti. She was married to the late Victor Nau. She attended Secretarial School for two years and was an Administrative Assistant with Servo Tek in Hawthorne, NJ. Survivors include her daughter Joan Cerone and her husband William of Greenwood Lake, NY; two sons: Victor Nau of Manhattan and Lloyd Nau of Warwick; three grandchildren: William, Marc and Jennie; her brother Louis Di Taranti; several nieces and nephews. Friends may visit on Tuesday, August 17, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday at St. Stephens RC Church. Interment Maryrest cemetery, Mahwah, NJ. STELLA R. BILVIN

Florida, N.Y. - Stella R. Bilvin "Aunt Stella", of Florida, a homemaker and lifetime area resident, entered into rest on Saturday, July 14 at St. Anthony Community Hospital, Warwick. She was 78. The daughter of the late Joseph K. and Katherine Jarocki, she was born on April 12, 1926 in Big Island. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church and she was past president of St. Joseph's Living Rosary Society and Florida Senior Citizens. Survivors include one brother, Frank Jarocki and his wife, Kathy, of Florida; niece, Karen Weslowski; nephew, Frank Jarocki Jr.; and cousin, Paul Jarocki. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 18 at St. Joseph's Church, 20 Glenmere Ave., Florida. Friends may call on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening, August 17 at T.S. Purta Funeral Home, 22 Glenmere Ave., Florida, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Interment will be in St. Joseph's cemetery, Florida. The Rev. Joseph Tokarczyk will officiate. DANIEL FRANCIS JOHNSON

Northampton, Mass. - Daniel Francis Johnson of Northampton, Mass., formerly of Narrowsburg, died Monday, July 26, 2004 at North Hampton VA Medical Center in Leeds, Mass. He was 56. The son of Carl E. Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Werneke Johnson, he was born September 23, 1947 in Callicoon. Daniel worked for his father who owned Johnson Tree Service. Daniel graduated from Cortland State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Physical Education. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He was with the 25th Division as a Chaparral Crewman. He was also a supporter of the Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include his father, Carl E. Johnson Sr. of Narrowsburg; one brother, Carl E. Johnson Jr.; one sister, Ellen E. Flynn; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Mary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, August 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, Narrowsburg. The Rev. Thomas Jones O.F.M. will officiate. Burial of cremated remains will follow in St. Francis Xavier cemetery, Narrowsburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45250-0301. BARBARA A. GOINGS

Walker Valley, N.Y. - Barbara A. Goings of Walker Valley, a longtime resident of the area and nurse, having retired from Orange Regional Medical Center at Horton in Middletown, died Thursday, August 12, 2004 at Orange Regional Medical Center at Horton in Middletown. She was 64. The daughter of Ronald and Elizabeth Clarkin Goings, she was born on May 4, 1940 in New York City. Barbara devoted her life to nursing, giving especially tender care to the disabled and the helpless. She was a beloved member of her Walker Valley community, offering help and comfort to whomever needed her. She had the ability to make and keep friends from all walks of life for decades. Barbara was a loving friend not only to people, but also to all non-humans and a proud member of the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). She leaves behind her beloved four-footed children, Annabelle, Martha and Tiger; her cousin, Dorothy Paradzinski of Staten Island; and her friends, Julia Everett, Tracey Minerly, Natalie Haggerty and Linda Youngblood as well as countless other heartbroken friends. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at the Church of the Infant Savior in Pine Bush. Donations can be made in Barbara's honor at the Walden Humane Society, P.O. BETH ANN MUNGOVEN

Wantage, N.J. - Beth Ann Mungoven of Wantage, NJ died Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at home. She was 50. Beth was born January 18, 1954 in Port Jervis, NY the daughter of the late Donald J. and Beverly Duffy Mungoven. Beth had been a lifelong resident of the Tri-State Area, excluding her several years of residence in Tucson, AZ in her young adulthood. She is also survived by her son, Jason Schaffer of Manhattan, NY; her husband, Mark Stauble of Wantage, NJ; her sisters Cindy Mungoven-Mikiten of Port Jervis, NY and Lynn Mungoven of Glen Spey, NY and her brothers Michael Mungoven of Homer, AK and Thomas Mungoven of Manhattan, NY. Beth was also aunt to Jonie, Damian and Jay Joseph. We all wish her Godspeed on her journey and may she arrive at her destination in peace. Please take a moment to mourn the loss of Beth, a beautiful soul, as she begins her journey beyond this earth. Beth was a beloved daughter, mother, wife, sister, niece, aunt and friend to many (including her four-legged friends). Beth was loved by many and her life will continue to be cherished as long as her memory persists in the thoughts of those that knew her. There will be no public visitation. PLESANT JEAN SANTIAGO

South Wales, N.Y. - Plesant Jean Santiago, 34, of South Wales, a former Truck Driver for Marquet Trucking, Gainsville, currently in manufacturing at Sopark, died August 12, 2004 as a result of an auto accident. The daughter of Joseph Michael Santiago and Willoe Logan Santiago, she was born July 2, 1970 in Goshen. She graduated from Cornwall Central High School in1988. Survivors include: her mother, Willoe Logan Santiago of Cornwall; her father, Joseph Michael Santiago of Germany; three sisters, Jaime Cote and her husband Andrew of Highland Falls, Amy Santiago of Newburgh, and Meredith Santiago of Middletown; grandparents, Joseph and June Santiago of Monroe; three uncles, Anthony Santiago of Bronx, Mark Santiago of Briarcliffe, and Philip Santiago of Monroe; and three nephews, Aric, Nick, and Jake Cote. Jean is also survived by her companion, Neil Cook. A family statement reads: "Jean was high-spirited, independent and had a great sense of humor as well as one of adventure. A few years ago, she became a semi-truck driver and traveled all through the United States, which gave her great joy. She was very fond of Twinkies. Jean is greatly loved and will be missed." Jackley, 75, of Matamoras, Pa. and York, Pa., a lifelong area resident, and a retired Teller #1 for the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, Milford-Montague Toll Bridge, died Friday, August 12, 2004 at his home. The son of the late J. Henry Jackley and Jennie Lee Jackley, he was born in Port Jervis, NY on June 11, 1929. He was married to the late Edna E. Ives Jackley. He was a member of The Good Shepherd and St. John The Evangelist Episcopal Church, Milford, Pa, and St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, York Pa.; Conically Resident of the Diocese of Bethlehem, Pa.; Member of the Port Jervis Lodge of Masons #328 F&AM; Past Patron of The Order of the Eastern Star Pocono Chapter #62; member of the Neversink Chapter Royal Arch Masons #186, Port Jervis. He is the Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of the State of New York; and served from 1947-1950 as a veteran of the US Army Medical Corp. KATHRYN STRATTON BENSON

Monticello, N.Y. - Kathryn Stratton Benson, a homemaker and lifelong resident of the area, died Thursday, August 12, 2004 at the Skilled Nursing Unit in Harris. She was 97. The daughter of the late Fred and Edith Stratton, she was born January 31, 1907 in Franklin Township, Pa. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Monticello where she was a longtime treasurer of the Altar Guild. Kay cherished her family, home and faith. Her example of grace, dignity and strength will guide us. Her unconditional love will sustain us. Her sense of humor comes back to us again and again. We feel forever blessed by the warm and wonderful memories that will remain deep in our hearts. She was the widow of Robert N. Benson who predeceased her on March 7, 1993. Survivors include a son, Alan Benson and his wife, Betty, of Queensbury; her two daughters, Marie Buckstad and her husband, Carl of Forestburgh, and Bett Rappaport of Bedminster, N.J.; six grandchildren, Neal Benson, Christia Benson, Chad Rappaport, Stacey Rappaport, Tristin Buckstad and Tara Buckstad Russo; five great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; nine step-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Clyde Stratton. Cremation will be held at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Newburgh. Walden, N.Y. - Mary Ella Bucklen, of Walden, NY, died August 21, 2004 at Port St. Lucie Medical Center. Survivors include her devoted husband, Lou; loving children: Lisa, Keith and Marc. Milford, PA - Mary Sell, 77, of Milford, PA, died on Friday, August 20, 2004 at Milford Senior Care and Rehabilitation Center, Milford, PA. She was a retired nurse. The daughter of Charles and Isabelle Laurensz, she was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 30, 1926. She was married to Robert A. Sell. Survivors include her husband, Robert; five children: John Miranda of Brooklyn, NY, Angelo Miranda of Spring Glenn, NY, Gilbert Miranda of Bunnell, FL, Michele Miranda of Farmington, CT and Robert Sell, II of Islip Terrace, NY; one brother, Manuel Mirailh of NJ; 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. KENNETH W. MCMAHON

Newburgh, N.Y. - Kenneth W. McMahon, a longtime resident of the area, and a salesman for Sleepys, Inc., died August 21, 2004 at Castle Point. He was 70. The son of the late William and Anna McKenna McMahon, he was born May 13, 1934 in Brooklyn. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1955 and belonged to the Organization, the Big Red One. Survivors include his wife, Lynne Mallon McMahon, at home; his daughters, Erinn McMahon-Lamberti of Brewster, andJeanine McMahon of Newburgh; sister, Virginia Nielsen of Midland Park, N.J.; two grandchildren, Kiara Lynne Lamberti and Brandon Kenneth Lamberti; and several nieces and nephews and cousins. Kauneonga Lake, N.Y. - Margaret T. McDermott, a resident of Kauneonga Lake, NY and a retired Supervisor in the Transportation Department for New York Telephone Co., died August 22, 2004 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA. She was 75. The daughter of Patrick and Mary Lynch McDermott, she was born March 26, 1929 in Kauneonga Lake, NY. Mrs. McDermott was a Communicant of St. Peters Church of Monticello, she was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Survivors include one sister, Agnes Bernhardt of Jeffersonville, NY; two brothers: George McDermott of Callicoon, NY and Thomas McDermott of O'Neil, NE; 18 nieces and nephews, also many great nieces and nephews and several cousins. MARIE MARGARET G. BERENTSEN

Bloomingburg, N.Y. - Marie Margaret Gunnestad Berentsen, a retired employee of the Middletown Psychiatric Hospital, died Saturday, August 21, 2004 at the Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen. She was 89. Marie was born in Brooklyn on December 14, 1914 to Harry & Anna Sandstrom Gunnestad, but went to Norway when she was six years old, only to return to the United States when she was 18. Survivors include her son: Morris Berentsen & his wife Emma of Bloomingburg; 4 Grandsons: Mark, Todd, Brian & Randy; and five great grandchildren; a nephew: Howard Waldenstrom of Staten Island; a niece: Sallie Wright of Lehigh Acres, FL. She was predeceased by her husband, Sander Berentsen in 1986, and a sister, Hildur Waldenstrom. There will be no visitation. Graveside services & burial will be held on Tuesday, August 24 at 11:00 am at the Bloomingburg Rural cemetery in Bloomingburg. HARRIET K. MITCHELL

Newburgh, N.Y. - Harriet K. Mitchell, a retired seamstress and lifelong area resident, died Saturday, August 21, 2004 at home. She was 78. The daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Simpson Kilpatrick, she was born February 19, 1926 in Newburgh. She was active in the First Baptist Church and also served on the Board of Trustees of the Church, I.L.G.W.U.; president of U.N.I.T.E. Retirees Club; and a loving mother. Survivors include her daughter, Gem Mitchell and her husband Mitchell Bring of Croton-on-Hudson; daughter, Jeryl Mitchell and husband Dr. Tom Rusk Vickery of Ponte-Vedra Beach, Fla.; brothers, Walter Kilpatrick of Lakeland, Fla. and Edwin Kilpatrick of Poughkeepsie; sister, Helen Hengst of Salisbury Mills; one grandson, Daniel Bring; and many nieces and nephews. EILEEN P. MARTIN

Tampa, Fla. - Formerly of Middletown Eileen P. Martin of Tampa Fla., died on Sunday, August 15, 2004 in Tampa, Fla. She was 69. The daughter of the late Oscar and Birdie Greene, she was born on December 28, 1934 in Oceanside, NY. Eileen was a strong and hardworking mother who raised 7 children by herself. She was a kind soul who befriended everyone. Eileen also loved animals. She is survived by her two sons, Brian Martin and his companion, Diane, of Ellenville, and Mark Martin and his wife, Beth, of Middletown; five daughters, Jill Martin and her companion, Harry of Wurtsboro; Susan Hansford and her companion, Ralph, of Cornwall; Lisa Martin of Tampa, Fla.; Robin Martin and her companion, Arthur, of Middletown, Shari Strzalka and her husband, Marty, of Middletown; and nine grandchildren; Jennifer, Matthew, Eric, Krista, Michelle, Ralphie, Ashley, Nicholas and Arthur, and her cat, Sonny. Cremation will be private and at the convenience of the family in Tampa, Fla. LAWRENCE A. "LARRY" SAGER

Walden, N.Y. - Lawrence A. "Larry" Sager, a life-long area resident and a retired machine operator for American Felt and Filter, New Windsor, NY, died peacefully at home on Friday August 20th with his family after an eleven month battle with cancer. He was 51. The son of Lawrence Nase and Mary Kent Sager, he was born July 6, 1953 in Newburgh. He is the husband of Marie Yerks Sager. He was an honorary member of Hudson Lodge # 309; past member of Goshen Lodge 365 F & AM; past patron of Walden Star Chapter 560; past Associate of Grand Sentinal Order of the Eastern Star State of New York. He was also Treasurer of Juanita Court 112 Order of the Amaranth, Newburgh; member of the Valley of Binghamton and Commissioner of the Walden Fire Dist. Survivors include his wife Marie Sager of Walden; three sons: Richard Sager and his wife Diane of Pine Bush, Francis Sager of Walden and Lawrence Sager of Walden; two brothers: Francis Sager of Minneapolis, MN and David Sager of Palmetto, FL; two sisters: Ann Lee Crisci of Virginia and Joan Hildebrandt of Newburgh; one grandson, Lexington Sager; also several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog "Gizzmo". He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Pacella. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 27th with Masonic Services at 6:45 p.m. and a Memorial service at 7:30 p.m. at the Gridley-Horan Funeral Home, 39 Orchard St., Walden. THE REVEREND DR. OWEN E. MERCER SR.

Wappingers Falls, N.Y. - Doctor Mercer, a retired United Methodist Clergy, entered the church triumphant on Sunday, August 22, 2004. He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1937 from Marshal University, Huntington W. VA; his Bachelor of Divinity from Emory University Candler School of Theology, Atlanta, GA; he attended Boston University in the 1950's working toward the completion of his Master of Sacred Theology at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA; he received his Doctor of Ministry from Drew University Theological School in Madison, NJ. He served as an active minister in the West Virginia, Ohio, Delaware, and New York Annual Conferences. Throughout that time Dr. Mercer served as a Registrar and Statistician of the Methodist Conference, member of Conference Board of Ordained Ministry, was a member of UMC Black College Board, member of the Television Radio and Film Commission of the City of New York; volunteered his time with his wife at Hart Island Drug Rehabilitation Center in New York City, member of the Hospital and Homes Commission of the City of New York, taught Pastor's school at West Virginia Wesleyan College, theology classes on New Testament at Cincinnati School of Religion; has held many clergy training seminars on "Death and Dying." During his years of ministry in West Virginia and Ohio he had his own Radio shows where he preaches and sang. He appeared on television, on behalf of the Cincinnati Ohio clergy, giving brief early morning devotions. Early in his ministry he established food programs and initiated interfaith councils. During the World War II years, in addition to his ministerial duties, he served as a back up doctor and delivered babies in the homes. He taught public school and filled the position of "acting principal." When the fire alarm sounded, the Chaplain was always there. His volunteer firefighter career came to a close in the State of Delaware where he was the State Chaplain. While in Delaware he served in the U.S. Auxiliary Air Force, as Captain in the Civilian Air Patrol. In and out of the bounds of his assigned parish, he worked toward the increase of the love of God and Neighbor. After a young man died on City Island, NY a traffic accident where the city ambulance did not respond for over an hour, he organized Volunteer Ambulance Corps for City Island. He organized two chapters of A.A.R.P. Mayor Koch's administration called upon his expertise to address the issues of rape and domestic violence in New York City. He was later called to the White House by President Jimmy Carter as a consultant for the president's committee employment. For his long- time efforts on behalf of the Boy Scots of America, Cardinal Terence Cook presented him with the Distinguished Pelican Award. Dr. Mercer was a member of Free and Accepted Masons, belonging to Beacon Lodge # 283 and Wappingers Falls Lodge # 671. Born in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, June 24, 1914, he married Juanita Earlene Edwards of Atlanta, GA in 1941. He is survived by his wife, Juanita; children: Rev. Dr. Owen E. Mercer of Beacon, NY and Dr. Sloane Drayson-Knigge; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Visitation for Dr. Mercer will be held at the Reformed Church of Beacon, Route 9D, Beacon, NY on Monday August 23, 2004 from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Tuesday August 24 at 11 a.m. Those desiring, in lieu of flowers, may send donations in his memory to the new Chapel at Drew University.
