FREDERICK GILBERT

Liberty, N.Y. - Frederick Gilbert, of Liberty, died Sunday, August 22, 2004 at Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris. He was 72. Frederick was born in Boston, Mass. on June 23, 1932. He is survived by his wife, Carol Pelton Edwards Gilbert at home; one daughter, Wendy Portalatin of Kerhonkson; one stepdaughter, Laura Edwards of Liberty; three stepsons David Edwards of Moravia, Thomas of Highland Mills and Timothy Edwards of Glen Wild; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Friends may call at Ramsay's Funeral Homes Inc., 275 South Main St., Liberty on Wednesday, August 25 from 12 to 2 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. with the Rev. IRENE M. COYLE

Warwick, N.Y. - Irene M. Coyle, 75, of Warwick, passed away August 22, 2004 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern, NY. Born on December 5, 1928 in Scotland, she was the daughter of the late George and Margaret Sim. Mrs. Coyle was a member of St. Stephens Church, Warwick. She is survived by her husband John Coyle; her three daughters: Kathleen Leahey of Warwick, Kelly Connell of Chester and Patricia Flynn of Goshen; her son, John C. Coyle of Astoria, Queens; five grandchildren: Daniel, Jack, Ryan, Craig and Brendan. Her sister Hilda Craig of Canada and her brother Jack Sim of Aberden, Scotland also survive. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave. Warwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Stephens RC Church, Warwick. Interment will be in St. Stephens cemetery, Warwick.

CLEMENTINA MARIE SISCO

Florida, N.Y. - Clementina Marie Sisco passed away at home with her family beside her at the age of 82. Her husband, Frank Edward Sisco, passed away in 1990 while they both resided in the state of Florida. In August of 2003, Marie moved to New York to live with her family. During that time much laughter was shared amongst friends, family and anyone who came to know her. Survivors include her daughter Lona Olejniczak with husband Zigmund of Florida, NY; her son Gary Sisco with wife Diane of Edgewater, FL and granddaughter Brigette Clementina Olejniczak of Pine Bush, NY, Erin Marie Olejniczak and companion James Scoville, both of Pine Bush, NY. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Walden Humane Society or any Humane Society of your choice due to her love of animals. Graveside services will be held on Monday August 30, 2004 at 11:30 a.m. at the Warwick cemetery. Funeral arrangements are made by T.S. Purta Funeral Home, Florida.

JOHN C. CHERRY

Montgomery, N.Y. - John C. Cherry of Montgomery, NY, an electronic technician for McVey Electronics in Newburgh and a life time resident of the area died Sunday, August 22, 2004, in Middletown. He was 39. The son of Charles E. and Mary Wilkinson Cherry, he was born April 19, 1965 in Newburgh. He was a member of the First Reformed Church of Walden. He was a graduate of Valley Central High School class of 1983 and attended OCCC. Survivors include his parents Charles E. and Mary Wilkinson Cherry at home and several cousins. Visitation will be Thursday, August 26, 2004 from 6 to 8pm. at Millspaugh Funeral Home, 22 Bank St., Walden. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 26, 2004, 8:00 P.M. at Millspaugh Funeral Home. Reverend Paul Benes will officiate. Cremation will be in Cedar Hill Crematory in Newburgh, NY. KATHLEEN YOUMANS

Pine bush, N.Y. - Kathleen Youmans of Pine Bush passed peacefully August 23, 2004 at Orange Regional Medical Center at Horton. She was 64. She was born August 6, 1940 in Sloatsburgh to Ellsworth and Frances Elizabeth Whitehead Youmans. A retired Senior X-Ray file clerk for Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern and a member of Hospital Worker's Local 1199. She is survived by her sons: Thomas Youmans of Pine Bush and Daniel Youmans of Cornwall; 3 Granddaughters: Michelle Youmans of Ohio, Tara Williams of Fort Richardson, Alaska, and Danielle Youmans of Cornwall; grandson Thomas Youmans Jr. of Fort Bragg, NC; 3 great grandchildren: Brianna, Brooke and Tyler; sister, Mary Mann of Middletown and brother Vincent Youmans of Newburgh. Also several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters: Marjorie Conklin, Anna Strobeck, Fredia Youmans, and Helen Wood, and brothers: John Youmans, Edward Youmans, and George Youmans. Friends may call from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 PM Wednesday August 25 at Morse Funeral Home Inc., 33 Railroad Ave., Middletown. MARY M. JOHNSTON

Middletown, N.Y. - Mary M. Johnston, a homemaker and 61-year area resident, died Saturday, August 21, 2004 at Orange County Residential Health Care Facility in Goshen. She was 92. The daughter of William McNeil and Catherine Waters McNeil, she was born August 28, 1911 in West Rutland, Vt. Survivors include one son, Kenneth L. "Moonie" Johnston of Middletown; three grandchildren, Mickey L. Johnston of Pine Bush, Terry Marie Johnston Steele of Simi Valley, Calif., Kenneth L. Johnston Jr. of Studio City, Calif.; three great- grandchildren, Samantha, Felicity and Maggie Rose; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband, Lawrence H. "Bud" Johnston who died November 8, 1999; sister, Margaret Shipling; and brothers, Francis and William McNeil. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 24 in the Wallkill cemetery in Phillipsburg. Burial will be in Wallkill cemetery in Phillipsburg. There will be no public visitation. MAY ELLA BUCKLEN

Walden, N.Y. - May Ella Bucklen, a longtime resident of the area, and recently of Port St. Lucie, Fla., died Saturday August 21, 2004 at Port St. Lucie Medical Center. She was 73. Born on May 20, 1931 in Newburgh, to the late Joseph and Rose Orbella Lease. She spent 45 wonderful years with her beloved husband Charles L. Bucklen whom May Ella married on October 19, 1959. A family statement reads, "May was a devoted Mother, wife, grandmother and a devoted friend to many." Survivors include her devoted husband, Charles Lou Bucklen; loving children, Keith and his wife Lynn Bucklen of Hingham, Mass., Marc and his wife Tracy Bucklen of Hingham, Mass. and Lisa Bucklen-Ball of Walden; Dear brothers, George Lease of Chatauqua and James Lease of Westchester; Dear sister, Rosalie Levine of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; Cherished grandchildren, Jennyrose Ball, Sarah Bucklen and Connor Bucklen; Loving nieces, Amanda, Catherine and Tammey Lease; Loving nephews B.J., Jim and Jamie Lease and Seth Levine. The family will be present to receive friends on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Coloni Funeral Home, 3001 Rt. 9W, New Windsor, NY. LAWRENCE A. "LARRY" SAGER

Walden, N.Y. - Lawrence A. "Larry" Sager, a life-long area resident and a retired machine operator for American Felt and Filter, New Windsor, NY, died peacefully at home on Friday August 20th with his family after an eleven month battle with cancer. He was 51. The son of Lawrence Rose and Mary Kent Sager, he was born July 6, 1953 in Newburgh. He is the husband of Marie Yerks Sager. He was an honorary member of Hudson River Lodge # 309; past Master of Goshen Lodge 365 F & AM; past Patron of Walden Star Chapter 560; past Associate Grand Sentinal Order of the Eastern Star State of New York. He was also Treasurer of Juanita Court 112 Order of the Amaranth, Newburgh; member of the Valley of Binghamton, Scottish Rite; a former member of the Col. Bradley Hose Co. #2, Walden and Past Commissioner of the Walden Fire Dist. Survivors include his wife Marie Sager of Walden; three sons: Richard Sager and his wife Diane of Pine Bush, Francis Sager of Walden and Lawrence Sager of Walden; two brothers: Francis Sager of Minneapolis, MN and David Sager of Palmetto, FL; two sisters: Ann Lee Crisci of Virginia and Joan Hildebrandt of Newburgh; one grandson, Lexington Sager; also several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog "Gizzmo". He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Pacella. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 27th with Masonic Services at 6:45 p.m. and a Memorial service at 7:30 p.m. at the Gridley-Horan Funeral Home, 39 Orchard St., Walden. CARROLL B. KNOWLTON "SKIP"

Goshen, N.Y. - Carroll B. Knowlton "Skip", 77, died August 14, 2004 at home from injuries following an automobile accident. He was born Oct 11, 1926 in Nashua, N.H., the son of Carroll B. Knowlton Sr. and Marion Davis Knowlton. He grew up in West Medford, MA, and graduated from Browne & Nichols School, Cambridge, MA. He served as a pharmacist's mate in the US Navy during World War II. His favorite assignment was on an air-sea rescue boat in Casco Bay. He graduated from Amherst College in 1950, where he met his wife, Elizabeth Rockwood (Mount Holyoke "50"). After working for several years at Knowlton Iron Works, his family's iron and steel works business, they moved to Ithaca, NY, where Skip was a graduate student in entomology at Cornell University, earning an M.S. in 1958 and a Ph D in 1961. His long teaching career was spent at Orange County Community College in Middletown, NY, where he taught biology. He served many years as Department Chairman, and was also the Faculty Association president. His retirement from teaching allowed him to return to his beloved Deer Isle, ME, where he had spent summers ever since he was an infant. He and Liz moved to Parker Ridge Retirement Community in Blue Hill, ME in 1995. During his lifetime of community service, Skip served on the Goshen, NY School Board, the Goshen Ecumenical Pantry Board, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the St. James's Church Vestry, and as a lay reader, chalice bearer and Lay Eucharistic Minister. After moving to Maine, he continued his church involvement at St. Francis by the Sea, and ultimately was ordained as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church in 2001. He was particularly involved in work with nursing homes and the elderly, with jail residents, with hospice patients, and with the needy. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth, his children Rodney and Laurie, and grandchildren Elijah and Samantha. A memorial service will be held on Tues., August 24 at 2 p.m. at St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church, Blue Hill, ME. RITA McGRATH BAHREN

Chester, N.Y. - Rita McGrath Bahren, a lifetime resident of Chester, died Monday August 23, 2004 at Orange Regional Medical Center at Arden Hill Campus in Goshen. She was 77. The daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Carroll McGrath, she was born on August 5, 1927 in Goshen. She was the widow of William Bahren, who predeceased her in November 1970. Mrs. Bahren was appointed Village Historian in 2001 and was a retired Production Control Clerk at Chester Cable, where she worked for over 20 years. Her previous employment was at St. Columba Parish where she worked as a housekeeper for the Dominican Sisters who taught at St. Columba School. She was an active member of the Chester Historical Society where she was co-chairperson of both the Yard Sale and the Penny Social Committee. She was a member of St. Columba RC Church and the Chester Legion Auxiliary, having served at past president. She was also a previous active member of the St. Columba Ladies' Auxiliary and Mother's Club. Survivors include her daughters: Mary Beth of West Roxbury, MA and Susan of Chester; her nephew, R. John Pulvirent and his wife Marie of Central Valley; her great nephews: Michael and Stephen Pulvirent and great nieces: Lisa Wolgamuth and Shancy Pulvirent and her great nephew, Dale Thomas Wolgamuth. She was predeceased by her sisters: Marjorie Pulvirent and Elizabeth J. McGrath and her brother, Jack McGrath as well as her nephew, Joseph Pulvirent and her great nephew, Thomas Pulvirent. Visitation hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday August 25, 2004 at the Lippincott Funeral Home, Inc., 92 Main St. in Chester, NY. CLARENCE E. COMFORT

Matamoras, Pa. - Clarence E. Comfort, of Matamoras, Pa., a retired locomotive engineer with the Erie Railroad and N.J. Transit and a resident of the area for most of his life, died Sunday, August 22, 2004 at Allied Services Skilled Nursing Center in Scranton, Pa. He was 74. He was born July 22, 1930 in Honesdale, Pa., the son of the late Miles and Lottie Blanche Smith Comfort. He was the widower of Ida M. Rose Titsworth Comfort. She died October 8, 1993. He was a member of the Matamoras United Methodist Church; Westfall Fire Dept.; Matamoras Senior Citizens; Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers; Port Jervis Pop Warner Football; Mid-Hudson Football Officials; NYS Baseball Association; Port Jervis German-American Club; Golden Age Club of Milford and AARP. He was also a former member of the Port Jervis Volunteer Ambulance Corp and Orange County American Softball Association. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of the American Legion a Post No. 139, Milford. Surviving are three sons, Eugene Comfort and his wife Tracey of Port Jervis, Miles Comfort and his wife Jackie of Milford, Pa., Shawn Comfort of Jeffersonville, N.Y.; three daughters, Blanche Banghart of Huguenot and her husband Otto of Port Jervis, Karen Comfort and her husband Gary Crowell of Monticello, Doreen Holifield of Pensacola, Fla.; a close family friend, Chris Pfanstiel of Jeffersonville; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and friends. He was predeceased by two daughters, Sharon Elizabeth and Baby Comfort; a grandson, Jesse Comfort and two brothers, Ronald and Lawrence Comfort. HILARIO J. SIFUENTES

Newburgh, N.Y. - Hilario J. Sifuentes, a one year resident of the area, died Saturday, August 21, 2004. He was 55. The son of the late Jose Sifuentes and the late Victoria Chuquin, he was born October 21, 1948 in Peru. Survivors include his wife Rogelia Calero Sifuentes at home in Newburgh; daughters: Helen Rivera of Newburgh and Karina Sifuentes of Peru; three brothers: Juan Gutierres of Peru, Agusto Gutierres of Peru and Fernando Gallardo of Newburgh; two sisters: Carola Monzon of Peekskill and Andrea Sifuentes of Japan; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Friday, August 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brooks-DiDonato Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh, NY. Funeral service will be on Friday August 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. GORDON L. WHITE

Newburgh, N.Y. - Gordon L. White, a Maintenance Engineer with 27 years of service to St. Lukes Hospital and a life long area resident, died suddenly on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at St. Lukes Hospital. He was 57. The son of the late John Sloane White and Vivian Dawes White, she was born January 12, 1947 in Newburgh. He was the husband of Shirley Smith White. Survivors include his daughters: Kim White of Newburgh and Hilary White of Newburgh; his brother, Mark White of Longmont, CO; sisters: Marlene Parnell of Sherman, TX and Beverly Devalue of Wyckoff, NJ; granddaughter, Alina Botsford of Newburgh, also several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Friday, August 27, 2004 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the White & Venuto Funeral Home, 188 N. Plank Rd., Rte 32, Town of Newburgh. GERHARD "JERRY" KUMP

Chester, N.Y. - Gerhard "Jerry" Kump, of Chester, a senior designer for AERCO International Inc., entered into rest on Monday, August 23, 2004 at his home after a long illness. He was 53. The son of Mathias and Hilda Fitz Kump, he was born January 9, 1951 in Graz, Austria. Jerry was a US Airforce Veteran having served from 1969 to 1973. Survivors include his wife Linda Kump at home; two sons, Philip and Nickolas Kump both of Chester; one sister, Barbara Zadorozny of Florida, N.Y.; one brother, Leo Kump of Queens; and nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, August 27 at St. Joseph's Church, 20 Glenmere Ave, Florida, N.Y. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Jeffersonville, N.Y. - Laura A. Stephenson, of Jeffersonville died suddenly on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at home. She was 24. The daughter of Allan and Anna Pfeil Stephenson, she was born on August 25, 1979 in Harris. Family Statement: "Laura was an extremely sweet girl, to know her was to love her. She always had time to help others before helping herself and she loved animals, life and people." Survivors include, her loving parents at home; her maternal grandmother, Gisel Pfeil of Youngsville; her maternal grandfather, Karl Pfeil of Jeffersonville; her life partner, Roger Weatherly at home; three Uncles: John Pfeil and his wife Janet of Freemont Center; Tony Pfeil and his wife Pam of Jeffersonville; Karl Pfeil Jr. of Youngsville; several cousins and one special cousin, Cindy. FRANCES D'LAG

Wallkill, N.Y. - Frances D'Lag, a 67-year resident of the area, and a homemaker, died Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at 4:15 a.m. She was 95. The daughter of the late Frank Stasta and Julia Svonar, she was born December 17, 1908 in Yonkers. She married Gerard D'Lay of Flushing on October 28, 1937 in Yonkers. Her husband predeceased her. She was a member of the first graduating class of the newly built Gorton High School, Yonkers, in 1926. A family statement reads: "She will be missed by her friends and family and was an inspiration to all who knew her." Survivors include her daughter, Amy Fagans of Chocowinity, N.C.; grandchildren, Peter Fagans of New Fairfield, Conn., Douglas Fagans of Lombard, Ill. and Heather Fagans of Belmont, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Weston and Allison Fagans - children of Peter Fagans. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, August 28 at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery in Yonkers following the service.

MARGARET D. POWERS

Lake Katrine, N.Y. - Margaret D. Powers, a retired event Coordinator for Columbia University, New York City, NY and a resident of the area for many years, recently moving to Tenbroeck Commons Nursing Center, died Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at Tenbroeck Commons Nursing Center after a long illness. She was 89. The daughter of Matthew F. Ryan and Mary Pritchard Ryan, both deceased, she was born January 5, 1915 in New York City, NY. She was the wife of Matthew J. Powers Sr., who predeceased her on March 23, 2003. Mrs. Powers was a member of the Catholic Church. Survivors include her son, Matthew Powers Jr. of Rochester, NY; sister, Helen Lamadore of Yonkers, NY; three granddaughters: Terri Powers-Stern of Fort Lee, NJ, Lynda Ezenwacjc of Rosendale, NY and Christina Powers of New Paltz, NY; great granddaughter, Crystal Powers of New Paltz, NY; also many nieces and nephews. HORACE "SONNY" J. SHOWLER JR.

Newburgh, N.Y. - Horace "Sonny" J. Showler, Jr., of Newburgh, former Warehouse Foreman for Hilton, Gibson & Miller in New Windsor, entered into rest Monday, August 23, 2004, in St. Luke's Hospital. He was 71. Son of the late Horace and Rose Maczacheizw Showler, he was born January 4, 1933 in Cornwall. Sonny was an avid bowler, belonging to the Newburgh Bowling Assn., was a member of a Dart League, and enjoyed puzzles and model airplanes. He was very much loved and cherished and will be dearly missed. Survivors include his three daughters: Charlene Black and her husband Michael of Town of Newburgh, Denise Sparkman and her husband Steve of Florida, and Lisa Anderson and her husband Kevin of Newburgh; and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Tammy Lynn, and his former wife, Shirley Showler Hall. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 26 at Brooks-DiDonato Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh, NY. A funeral service will be held at 8:00 pm at the funeral home following visitation. Burial of ashes will be on Tuesday, August 31 in Woodlawn cemetery, New Windsor. Donations in memory of Horace J. Showler Jr. may be sent to New York Sheriffs Assn., 27 Elk St., Albany, NY 12207. .
