RICHARD "RICK" BIRKENSTOCK

Newburgh, N.Y. - Richard "Rick" Birkenstock, of Newburgh, a retired mechanic and former owner/operator for D & R Citgo/Deli-Mart, entered into rest Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at home. He was 59. Son of Janna Timmerman Birkenstock and the late Richard Birkenstock, Sr., he was born September 4, 1944. Rick belonged to the Black Dirt Squadron and the Crown Point Flyers Remote Control Airplane Clubs. Survivors include his loving wife, Andrea Carlson Birkenstock, whom he married on September 13, 1969 in St. Michael's Church in Flushing, NY, at home; his mother, Janna Birkenstock, of Florida; two sons, Richard Birkenstock and his wife Kelly of Glen Spey and Eric Birkenstock and his wife Michelle of Balmville; his sister, Cynthia Monchino and her husband Donald of Newburgh; four grandchildren, Brenna, Amanda, Karl Robert and Paul Richard; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Friday, August 27 at Brooks-DiDonato Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 28 in St. Mary's Church, Newburgh. Cremation will be in Cedar Hill Crematory, Newburgh. DOROTHY M. LOOBY

Hendersonville, N.C. - Dorothy M. Looby, 81, of Hendersonville, N.C., died Friday, August 20, 2004. A native of Middletown, NY, she was the daughter of the late Louis F. and May Barnes Zieres. She was a 1941 graduate of Middletown High School and a 1949 graduate of the State Teachers College at Buffalo, NY, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in homemaking education. She belonged to Phi Upsilon Omicon, the national honorary Home Economics Sorority. In the early 1950s she served as a home making teacher at Columbia High School in East Greenbush, NY, where her future husband was also a faculty member. Mrs. Looby was an avid bridge player and member of several bridge clubs, she was also skilled in needle craft arts. She had engaged in years of genealogical research on her family's history in England, Ireland and Germany. For many years she belonged to the League of Woman Voters in this and previous communities. Survivors include her husband, Thomas F. Looby; five sons: Peter J. McGourty of Huntsville, AL, Daniel P. Looby and his wife Patti of Lawrenceville, GA, Christopher J. Looby and his partner Joseph A. Dimuro of Los Angeles, CA, Thomas F. Looby III and his wife Kim of Winston-Salem, N.C., and John F. Looby of San Francisco, CA. She also had six grandchildren: Joshua, Bree, Lauren, Megan, Kaitlin and Kara Looby. A Mass of the Resurrection and Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 30, 2004 at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Hendersonville, N.C. THOMAS STEVEN WARYHA

Ferndale, N.Y. - Thomas Steven Waryha, a lifetime Sullivan County resident, passed away on Tuesday August 24, 2004 at Orange County Residential Health Care Facility in Goshen, NY after a long illness. He was 56. The son of Joseph and Sophie Dworetsky Waryha, he was born on September 26, 1947 in Liberty, NY. He was retired from the United States Air Force, serving from 1965 to 1989. He retired with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He was the recipient of the Vietnam Service Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters; the Air Force Presidential Unit Citation with One Oak Leaf Cluster; the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valour and Five Oak Leaf Clusters; the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with Six Oak Leaf Clusters; the Philippines Presidential Unit Citation; the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with One Oak Leaf Cluster and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After his retirement he worked for Action Towards Independence in Monticello, NY. He was married to Gilda Delantar. They were married on April 19, 1978 at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. Survivors include his wife Gilda Waryha at home; his mother, Sophie Waryha of Ferndale; two sons: Jason Waryha and his fiancé Meredith Friedman of Clark Summit PA and Edward Waryha of Wichita Falls, TX; a daughter, Christine Waryha at home and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother Stanley Waryha. Friends may call at Ramsay's Funeral Home 275 S. Main St. Liberty on Thursday August 26, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. GISELA MARIA ASHCROFT

Mountainville, N.Y. - Gisela Maria Ashcroft of Mountainville, a retired real estate broker and area resident since 1953, passed away Monday, Aug. 23, 2004 at Cornwall Hospital. She was 80 yrs old. Gisela was born April 2, 1924 in Deggendorf, Germany. She was the daughter of Maria Neustifter and Emil Weinzierl. She was raised in Munich, Bavaria where she studied art and design, which led her to a career in the fashion industry in New York city prior to moving to Cornwall. While raising her family, she studied painting under John Gould of the Bethlehem Art Gallery and became an accomplished oil painter, capturing many local scenes on canvas. She married Roland Ashcroft Sept. 18, 1950 in Germany. She was predeceased by her husband and one son Eric W. Ashcroft. She is survived by her two daughters: Tara Hoffmann and son-in-law, Horst Hoffmann of Cornwall-On-Hudson and Amber Ashcroft of Montgomery, two grandsons: Rainer & Colin Hoffmann, one granddaughter Logan A. Tierney. Gisela was always generous with her time and talent, sewing ballet costumes for many recitals, serving as Mountainville School PTA member, and contributing as a long term member of the Cornwall Garden Club. She donated her paintings to many charity sales. Friends and family may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday August 28 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St., Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held on Sunday August 29 11 a.m. at the funeral home, where friends are invited to share memories, read poetry or prose and reminisce. ROBERTA MAE (JONES) SHERLOCK

Monroe, N.Y. - Roberta Mae (Jones) Sherlock, a housewife and lifelong area resident, died Monday, August 23, 2004 at Campbell Hall Rehabilitation Center in Hamptonburgh. She was 79. The daughter of the late William Ryerson and Gussie Compton Ryerson, she was born May 25, 1925 in Tuxedo. She was the widow of Elisha Jones and Orville Sherlock. She was a member of the Tuxedo American Legion Post #293 Ladies Auxiliary, Tuxedo. A family statement reads, "With all the challenges that came with a large family, Roberta held a special place in her heart for each member of her family. The holidays, particularly, Thanksgiving and Christmas, were her favorite times of the year, when the family came together and created memories that will forever be remembered by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren." A smile, a comment, even an occasional reprimand, punctuated the atmosphere around Roberta, which always kept everybody coming back for more. The holidays will now have a different tone, but the homemade Christmas ornaments she shared with her family, will always bring a smile to the faces, and a story to the lips of those she loved." Survivors include her sons, Elisha (Sonny) Jones of Monroe, John R. Jones of Sebastian, Fla., David J. Jones of Harriman, Bruce Jones of Manhattan, Thomas F. Jones of Monroe; daughters, Gladys Kyles of Hampton, Jeanne Grossman of Spencer, Hazel Saikknonen of Spencer; brother, Elliot R. Ryerson of Monroe; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her grandson, Todd Disidoro. FRANK J. "PINT" ROHAN

New Windsor, N.Y. - Frank J. "Pint" Rohan of New Windsor, a retired analyzer for I.B.M., entered into rest on August 31, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was 84. The son of the late John and Mary Fitzgerald Rohan, he was born December 8, 1919 in Newburgh. He was the husband of Stella Malinowski Rohan to whom he married on September 17, 1937. A WWII Air Force veteran, he was a member of the Newburgh Elks, Newburgh Softball Hall of Fame, and Osiris Country Club. Survivors include his wife, Stella, at home; one son, Geoffrey Rohan of Garrison; and three grandchildren, Geoffrey, Adam, and Megan. He was predeceased by three brothers, John, Edward, and William; and two sisters, Elizabeth Lamey and Marie Benedict. The Mass will be announced at a later date. STAFF SGT. CHARLIE AARON SHANKLE

Newburgh, N.Y. - Staff Sgt. Charlie Aaron Shankle, a 12-year medical specialist serving the USA, and 30-year area resident, died August 26, 2004 at home. He was 71. The son of the late Hamp and Gertrude Shankle, he was born January 28, 1933 in Weirgate, Texas. He was the widower of Betsy Jacobs Shankle. Survivors include his good friend, Deborah Kirkley of Newburgh; sisters, Tressie G. Collins of Indianapolis, Ind., Priscilla Shankle-Aubrey of Beaumont, Texas and Zelema V. Harris of Champaign, Ill.; sons, Eddie and John; stepdaughter, Mary Jane Crosdale. Visitation will be held from 12 noon to 3 p.m. at Brutus W. Cornwall, N.Y. - Carol F. Kelly, 67 years old of Cornwall, a retired sales employee with US Chess in New Windsor, died August 30, 2004 at home. The daughter of Clayton Dexter and Florence Donnelly, she was born December 24, 1936 in White Plains, N.Y. Survivors include her husband James O. Kelly at home; two sons Paul C. Kelly of Beacon N.Y., David N. Kelly of Woodridge, Va.; one daughter, Laurie Sickles of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; seven grandchildren Jesse Kelly, Zach Kelly, Amy Kelly, Paige Kelly, William Kelly, Abigail Sickles and Ella Sickles She was predeceased by one son Brian J. Monroe, N.Y. - Edward Laurence Gartin, a Regional Technologist of Monroe, died Monday, August 30, 2004 at Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack, N.J. He was 31. Born in Syosset, he formerly resided in Ramsey, N.J. before moving to Monroe 18 months ago. He was a Regional Information Technologist for Advantage Sales and Marketing in Ramsey, N.J. for the past 10 years. Surviving are his loving wife of 18 months, Dana Mintzer Gartin; his dear parents, James and Avis Schensul Gartin of Bridgewater, N.J.; his loving sisters, Jennifer Schlegel and husband, Michael, of Alburtus, Pa., and Stephanie Pearce and husband, Ron, of Frenchtown, N.J.; and his maternal grandfather, Bernard Schensul and wife, Ruth, of West Bayshore. Ellenville, N.Y. - Benjamin Padua Sr. of Ellenville, a 40-year resident, and a supervisor for VAW, Ellenville, died August 31, 2004 in Westchester Medical Center. He was 59. The son of the late Juan P. and Ernestina Morales Padua, he was born September 12, 1944 in Puerto Rico. He was a member of The Church of St. Mary and St. Andrew, Ellenville. Survivors include his wife, Margarita Echeverry Padua, at home; four sons, Benjamin Padua Jr. of New York City, Angel Padua of Monticello, James Morales of California, Walter Collazo of N.C.; his daughter-in-law, Tracy Padua; his brother, Angel Luis Padua of Kerhonkson; three grandchildren, Rilley Sinclair Padua, Harold Ricco Padua, and Christian Miguel Padua; and several nieces and nephews also survive. SHIRLEY M. IBSEN

Highland, N.Y. - Shirley M. Ibsen, a longtime resident of Highland, formerly of Brooklyn, and retired since 1980 from the U.S. Postal Service in Milton, died August 31, 2004 at Hudson Valley Rehabilitation and Extended Care Center. She was 71. The daughter of Gustav Lind and Hilda Isojki, she was born March 3, 1933 in Brooklyn. She was the widow of Steven Ibsen who predeceased her in 1982. Survivors include three daughters, Karin Janson of Germantown, Kristin Janson of Maspeth, and Greta Janson of Newburgh; one son, Evert Janson of Watertown; six grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by one brother, Erik Lind; two half-sisters, Ethel Finley and Lillian; and one half-brother, Carl Sundquist. Calling hours will be held Friday, September 3 from 2 to 4 at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home Inc., 38 Main St., Highland. ELMER S. BAIRD

Mystic, Conn. - Elmer S. Baird, of Mary Elizabeth Nursing Center, Mystic, Conn., died peacefully on Saturday, August 28, 2004. He was 86. Elmer was born on October 18, 1917 in Walden, son of the late Richard and Edna (Shoemaker) Baird. His wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Wells Baird, predeceased him in July. He graduated from the State University of New York at New Paltz, where he met his beloved Dody. He enlisted in the Army Air Force at the start of WWII as a navigator on B17s. He served 25 missions in the European Theater of Operations. Elmer was a District Sales Manager for R.H. Donnelley in New York State for 33 years. He was active in Kiwanis, The Wallkill Masonic Temple, Lake Osiris Golf Club, and various bowling leagues. Elmer Baird will be remembered for his generous spirit and love of family and friends. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy B. and Thomas R. Moretta, of Gales Ferry, CT; granddaughters, Allison Noonan of Canton, MA and Kristin Moretta of Gales Ferry, CT; sister-in-law, Gertrude W. Laffin; nieces, Sarah Brookhart and Lauren Earle; and nephew, Wells Duffy. He was predeceased by a sister, Glenna Tardiff. Interment will be private. Byles-Groton Memorial Home, Groton, Conn., is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

ALFRED "FRED" STOKES JR.

Gardiner, N.Y. - Alfred "Fred" Stokes Jr., a resident of Gardiner for many years, a 17-year employee of Wallkill Correctional and operator of the Stokes Farm in Gardiner, died Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at home after a long illness. He was 84. The son of the late Alfred Stokes Sr. and Adelaide Coulter Stokes, he was born March 22, 1920 in County Armagh, Ireland. He was formerly of New York City; was a member of the Gardiner Reformed Church; past member of the Consistory; and member of the Farm Bureau. He was married on April 9, 1944 in Marlboro to Lillian M. Albertson, who survives at home in Gardiner. Also surviving is his daughter, Karen Baker and her husband Lawrence of Gardiner; son, Alfred Stokes III and his wife Roberta of Gardiner; granddaughters, Tina Hayner of Kingston and Lauren Baker of Gardiner; sister-in-law, Edith DuBois of Marlboro; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m, Thursday, September 2 at Copeland Funeral Home, 162 S. Putt Corners Rd., New Paltz. JOYCE A. MORGAN

Walden, N.Y. - Joyce A. Morgan, a rural letter carrier for the Walden Post Office for 28 years, and longtime area resident, died Monday, August 30, 2004 at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. She was 61. The daughter of Thomas and Mary Burgess Gleason, she was born April 17, 1943 in New York City. She was a member of the Most Precious Blood Church and the Rosary Society; Col. Bradley Hose Co. Ladies Auxiliary. Joyce was a shop steward for the National Rural Letter Carriers Assoc. from 1996-2003 and was actively involved in the Employee Involvement, Quality of Worklife Program for the rural carriers and the postal service. She was the wife of John E. Morgan who survives at home. Also surviving is one son, Sean Morgan and his wife Kathleen of Campbell Hall; two daughters, Mary Morgan of Pine Bush and Michele Bray and her husband John of Walden; three sisters, Margaret Nicholson of Long Island, Edith Simpson of New York City and Teresa Burns of Wappingers Falls; four grandchildren, Danielle Rizzo, Anthony Rizzo, Michele Cronin and Kevin Cronin. She was predeceased by her son, Daniel T. Morgan; two brothers Thomas and Roger Gleason; three sisters, Mary Nigen, Helen Harris and Gladys Gleason. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, September 2 at the Gridley-Horan Funeral Home, 39 Orchard St., Walden. COSIMO DIBRIZZI

Balmville, N.Y. - Cosimo DiBrizzi, a well known business man and restaurateur of the area, died Monday, August 30, 2004 at Westchester Medical Center. He was 64. He was born to Nicola and Immacolata Ragone DiBrizzi on November 28, 1939 in Teggiano, Italy. Cosimo married his beloved wife, Angela Casella on April 27, 1970 in Rome, Italy and together they spend 34 wonderful years. Cosimo was a member of the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, the Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce, the Dutchess Chamber of Commerce and the International Council of Shopping Centers. He is survived by his loving family, his beloved wife, Angela, at home; loving mother, Immacolata DiBrizzi of Poughkeepsie; beloved children, Nicolas DiBrizzi of Balmville, Serena Carrieri Russo and her husband, Andrew, of Balmville, and Elisa DiBrizzi of Balmville; three dear sisters, Maria Balbo, Vincenza Citera and Joanne Costanzo, all of Poughkeepsie; two adored grandchildren, Italo and Matteo Carrieri Russo and many nieces, nephews and friends. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 4 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh. Interment will follow at Calvary cemetery in New Windsor. The family will be present to receive friends on Thursday evening, September 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Friday, September 3 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Coloni Funeral Home, 3001 Rte. 9W, New Windsor. FAYE SMITH BRISTOW

Nyack, N.Y. - Faye Smith Bristow died peacefully at her home on August 29, 2004. Faye was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Valley Cottage, where she resided from 1953 to 1994. Her life was characterized by strong involvement in a wide variety of community affairs. She was a past president of the Valley Cottage PTA, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Valley Cottage Fire Department, and the Nyack Board of Education. Faye also served as President of the Valley Cottage Guild of Nyack Hospital, and was a member of the Nyack Hospital Women's Executive Board. For many years, Faye served as the chairman of the Republican committee in District 51 (Valley Cottage) as well. She was also a life member of the Rockland County chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. In 1970, the Daughters of the American Revolution honored Faye as the "Rockland County Woman of the Year". She is survived by a sister, Clara Hendricks of Edinboro, Pa.; a son, William Smith of Valley Cottage; a daughter, Cheryl Purtill and her husband, Thomas, of Chester; three grandsons, Jason Kolesar, Michael Purtill and Joseph Purtill; and one great grandson, Mason Kolesar. Faye was predeceased by daughter, Diane Smith; son, Robert Kolesar; husband, Harry G. Smith; and more recently by husband, William F. Bristow. Visiting is scheduled for Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hannemann Funeral Home, Inc. in Nyack. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 3, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Congers United Methodist Church on Lake Road in Congers. Burial will follow at Oak Hill cemetery in Nyack. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nyack Hospital Foundation. Arrangements by Hannemann Funeral Home, Nyack.

SANDRA L. HOPPER COOVER

Galesburg, Kansas - Formerly of Newburgh, N.Y. Sandra L. Hopper Coover, a teacher who taught in Newburgh, in Texas, and for many years in Kansas, died suddenly in Kansas on August 29, 2004 as the result of an automobile accident. She was 51. The daughter of the late Alfred and Mabel Hopper, she was born September 5, 1952, in Kingston, N.Y. She was the wife of Donald P. Coover whom she married July 22, 1977 at the Cadet Chapel at the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Sandy was a graduate of Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, and Kansas State University. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Parsons, Kansas. Sandy was widely liked and admired by colleagues and much loved by family and friends. She loved to teach, and particularly enjoyed teaching reading. She doted on her pet cats and dogs over the years. Her tragic early loss leaves many bereft family members and friends both in Kansas and here in the Hudson Valley. Sandy is survived by her husband, Donald P. Coover of Galesburg, Kansas; sister, Allynne H. Lange and husband Russell of Newburgh; nephews Nathaniel and Thomas Lange of Newburgh and Brooklyn, father-in-law Allen Coover of Kansas, brothers and sisters-in-law in Kansas, aunt, cousins, and many nieces and nephews in Kansas, as well as a life-long best friend, Barbara P. Bourne, of Newburgh. In addition to services in Kansas, there will be visiting at the Quigley Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y. () on Friday, September 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services by Rev. Spierling of Calvary Presbyterian Church, Newburgh, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday morning, September 4, at St. Remy cemetery off Rte. 213 in St. Remy, southwest of Kingston, N.Y.
