FR. JOHN RYAN

Middletown, N.Y. - John M. "Jackie" Ryan of Middletown NY, died on Sunday September 5 in West Palm Beach, FL. He was 69. The son of the late John and Mary Mulligan Ryan, he was born on January 9, 1935 in New York, NY. He was professed into the Carmelites on September 8, 1955 in Williamstown, MA, and ordained May 27, 1961 at St. Albert's Seminary, Middletown. Fr. John earned an MA in Philosophy and History in 1961 at St. Bonaventure's in Olean, NY and a MA in Theology STM in 1972 from the NY Theological Seminary. He earned an MSW in Social Work in 1979 from Fordham University. He spent more than forty years in service to people. He first entered St. Albert's Seminary as a teenager; after being ordained, he taught history at the seminary from 1962-64. He was then sent to Auburn, NY and served as a teacher/Vice Principal at Mt. Carmel High School from 1964-67. Fr. John served as the Vocational Director for the Carmelites in New York City from 1967-72. He became the Pastor at the Church of the Transfiguration in Tarrytown, NY and served there from 1972-81. From 1981-87, he served as Parochial Vicar at St. Paul's in Bullville, NY, where a new CCD center was built. His last assignment was as Pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, where the new church was built under his direction from 1987-91. He married Elizabeth Brown in 1997 and continued his private practice of psychotherapy. He became actively involved in CORPUS (National Association for an Inclusive Ministry) and Rent-a-Priest Association. He was the author of a number of editorials for the Times Herald Record. A family statement reads: "Fr. John believed that the Catholic Church is in real need of reform and considered himself proudly one of the thousands of married priests serving people in their time of need. His sense of humor, compassion, generosity, and dedication to others was the very focus of his life." He is survived by his wife, Becky of Middletown; two brothers: Michael Edmund Ryan and his wife, Ellen of Forest Hills and Patrick Ryan of Goshen; and two sisters: Margaret Admirand and her husband, Peter of Pt. Washington, NY and Sr. Mary Ellen Ryan of St. Mary's Church in Manhattan; mother and father-in-law, Tom and Dolores Brown of Boynton Beach, Fla.; nieces and nephews: Michael, Sean, Patrick, Mary Ellen, Patrick, Danny, Anne, Mary Beth, Kathleen, Peter John, Andrew; Mark, Tim, Kevin, Erin, Meghan, Lily, Emily, Terry-Tom, Sean, Gina and Amanda. Friends and family may call on Thursday, September 9, 2004 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's R.C. Church, Rt. 17 K in Bullville, NY. Burial will follow in the family plot in Sleepy Hollow cemetery, Tarrytown, NY.

CARL FREER

Adairsville, Ga. - Carl Freer, a resident of Adairsville, Ga., formerly of Napanoch and Jeffersonville, and retired employee of the city of Rome Georgia Sewer and Water Department, died August 31, 2004 at home. He was 73. The son of Archibald and Edith Goughlin Freer, he was born September 7, 1930 in Ellenville. Survivors include his wife, Ann Freer, at home; his son, Alan Freer and his stepchildren, Ken and Christy; two brothers, Paul Freer and his wife, Louise, of North Carolina and James Freer and his wife, Ryliss of Youngsville; several grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial service for Carl was held in Georgia on September 3, 2004.

DAVID VAZQUEZ

Newburgh, N.Y. - David Vazquez, 57 years old of Newburgh, a former Cab driver for Yellow Cab, Tampa, Fla., died September 5, 2004 in Newburgh. The son of Joseph Vazquez and Gloria Bonilla Vazquez, he was born November 19, 1946 in the Bronx. Survivors include one daughter Angela Vazquez- Highland NY; former wife Jeanette Vazquez- Clintondale NY; one brother Joseph Vazquez- Tampa, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Thursday, September 9 from 9 to 10 a.m. at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 9 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home. WILLIAM FARRELL

Monroe, N.Y. - William Farrell (Billy Boy) "a very special person" and loved by all who knew him, died suddenly on Tuesday, September 7, 2004. He was 57. He is survived by his beloved sister, Mary Emmet; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his "family care" family who loved him fiercly and will miss him greatly, Dianne Mazza of Monroe, the old lady in the boot!; Matt Pearl, a gardener and his work horse pal; Lee Mazza, his work and "dunky donuts" buddy; Ron Mazza, who would give Bill the job of cleaning his car for all the change in it; Bill Mazza, his smoking buddy; and his housemates, Tony, Jeff and Blair; and of course, the three kids he loved so much, Dylan, Danielle and Nickolas. Bill loved his flower and tomato garden, his craft night with the kids, his "dunky donuts", Wendy's cheesecake, his dog Charlie, and his kitten. He will be sadly missed by both his families, who said, "A light went out in the world when Bill died. A Mass will be held Friday, September 10 at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church on Still Rd. in Monroe.

PAULINE C. MOLINELLI

Middletown, N.Y. - Pauline C. Molinelli, a longtime Middletown resident, died Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus. She was 79 years old. The daughter of the late Domenico and Domenica Buongiorni Casella, Pauline was born on September 27, 1924 in Piacenza, Italy. Pauline moved to Middletown in 1984 from New York City, where she was a banker for City Bank. She is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Louis Sr. at home: one daughter, Marjory Lapadura and her husband Anthony; one son, Louis Molinelli and his wife Barbara; four grandchildren, Christopher and his wife Stephanie, Laurette and her husband Gregg, Marissa and Cynthia and two great grandchildren, Samantha and Alex. GERALDINE E. MULARZ

Chester, N.Y. - Geraldine E. Mularz of Chester, a homemaker and 17 year resident of the area, formerly of Ridgewood, NY, died Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Arden Hill Campus in Goshen. She was 72. The daughter of Henry and Florence Kenning Koestner, she was born on July 12, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Frank W. Mularz at home; her daughters: Denise Korsak and her husband, Michael and Michele Doyle and her husband Charles; and her grandsons: Michael and Matthew Korsak and Charles and James Doyle, all of Chester. She is also survived by her brothers: Joe Koestner and his wife, Peggy of Hopewell Junction, NY and Hank Koestner of Orlando, FL, and her dearest friend, Gloria Stabach of Monroe, NY as well as several nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 Noon on Friday, September 10, 2004 at St. John R.C. Church, Murray Ave., Goshen, NY. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. DONALD L. ROBERTS SR.

Cornwall, N.Y. - Donald L. Roberts Sr., a resident of Cornwall, and self-employed painter for 40-years, died September 2, 2004 at home. He was 65. The son of William E. Roberts and Sophie Lipsey, he was born August 24, 1939 in Sugar Loaf. He was a lifelong resident of Washingtonville and a loving father and grandfather who will be dearly missed by friends and family. Survivors include his son, Donald L. Jr. and his wife, Arlene Roberts of Cornwall; daughter, Christine and her husband, William Nelson of Coldenham; brothers, William and his wife, Ruth Roberts, of the state of Florida, Kenneth and his wife, Arlene Roberts, of Salisbury Mills, and Paul Roberts of Washingtonville; sister, Barbara and her husband, Richard Holmes of the state of Florida; grandchildren, Erika Werthmann, Kyle Werthmann, Dylan Roberts, Nicholas Nelson, and Heather Cardona. A gathering of family and friends for a celebration of life will be held on Monday, September 13, 2004 at the David T. MARIA E. PETRONE-BURNETT

Fort Mill, S.C. - Maria E. Petrone-Burnett, 35, of Fort Mill, S.C., died September 2, 2004 at Carolinas Medical Center, Pineville. Maria was born September 13, 1968 in Kingston, N.Y., daughter of Frank Petrone and Eleanor Caruna Petrone. She had lived in Gardiner, N.Y. before moving to the Fort Mill area 20 years ago. She received her Master's Degree at Winthrop University and had taught school at Sunset Park Elementary School in Rock Hill, S.C. for the past 15 years. Besides teaching, Maria started her own business, Powerful Parents where she would go and lecture to groups on parenting skills. Maria even authorized several books on parenting. Her love and devotion for her four children certainly was conveyed in her books and seminars. She had an optimistic and positive spirit that was always displayed in the twinkle in her eyes and smile. Maria is survived by her loving husband, Chris Burnett; her four beautiful children Ryan Anthony Burnett, Daniel Ashe Burnett, Anthony Ray Burnett and Christopher Anthony Burnett; her parents, Frank and Eleanor Petrone; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clyde and Mary Sue Burnett; sister and three brothers, Corinne Petrone Kimble, Frank G. HELEN M. MILLER

Liberty, NY - Helen M. Miller, a lifetime area resident and retired waitress for the Triangle Lounge in Liberty, passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at Achieve Rehab and Nursing Facility in Liberty. She was 79. The daughter of Gustave and Della Terwilliger Johannemann, she was born on January 4, 1925 in Willowemoc, NY. She was a member of St. Peter's Church, Liberty. Helen's real love of life was her passion for golf. She is survived by three sons, Emil Miller of Miramar, FL, John Miller of Marysville, CA and Edward Miller of Portsmouth NH; two daughters, Ann Friedman and her husband Steven of Liberty and Judith Smith and her husband Charles of Hampton, VA; a brother, Claude Johannemann and his wife Bertie of Livingston Manor; a sister, Madlyn Schwartz of Holly Hill, FL; and seven grandchildren, Keenan, Thomas, April and Erick Miller, Carey Friedman and Lucas and Caitlin Smith. She was predeceased by her husband Emil Miller; four brothers, Emil, Gustave, Robert and Edward; and a sister, Rose Minati. There will be no visitation. MARY MEADEN

Monroe, N.Y. - Mary Meaden, of Monroe, N.Y., a registered nurse for 25 years and a 13-year resident of the area, died September 4, 2004 at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford, Conn. Mary was 47 years of age. The daughter of Gerald and Gertrude O'Connell Meaden, she was born on February 2, 1957 in St. Peter's Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. Mary graduated from Hunter College School of Nursing and began her career at Bellevue Hospital where she rose to the position of supervisor of Nurses. Mary is survived by her beloved mother and father at home; her brothers and their wives, Thomas and Wendy Meaden, Michael and Mary Ann Meaden and Joseph Meaden; her sisters Eileen Meaden and her fiancé William Perritt and Cathleen Meaden; and dear friend Wendy Gadwah. Mary is also survived seven nephews and five nieces; one grandniece and one grandnephew; along with many aunts and uncles. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 8 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, 139 Stage Road, Monroe, N.Y. FLORENCE MAY RAFFA

Neversink, N.Y. - Florence May Freer Raffa, a lifelong Neversink resident and homemaker, went home to her Lord on Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at her home with the love of her life "Joe" Raffa at her side. She was 92. The daughter of the late Charles Edward and Jane Velie Freer, she was born on Dec. 26, 1911 in Neversink, NY. She married Joseph Raffa on October 8, 1929 in Avon, CT. They were married for 74 years. Florence was a member of the Grahamsville United Methodist Church and the former Neversink Methodist Church. She was a charter member of the Neversink Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary and charter member of Neversink First Aid Squad. She was also a member of Cornell Cooperative Extension. Survivors include her loving husband, Joseph Raffa at home; one son, Harry J. Raffa and his wife Audrey of Little Falls, NY; one daughter, Joan Langton and her husband Edward of Lake Katrine, NY; a sister-in-law, Lucille Freer of Middletown; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by four brothers, Dr. Arden, Harry, Charles and Stanley Freer; six sisters, Addie Leroy, Beatrice Pomeroy, Bertha Wirth, Grace Claude, Helene Edwards and Evelene Kiel; and one grandson Steven Langton. DOROTHY LOUISE ADAMS

Highland Mills, N.Y. - Dorothy L. Adams, a 60-year area resident, and a retired dispatcher for the Town of Woodbury Police, Highland Mills, passed away Monday, September 6, 2004 at Orange Regional Medical Center in Goshen after a long illness. She was 90. The daughter of the late Cyrus Hamilton Goodwin and Ruth Edna Sargent Goodwin, she was born July 5, 1914 in Hiram, Maine. Dorothy was one of the original Communications Dispatchers for the Town of Woodbury. For many years she served St. David's Episcopal Church, Highland Mills, as a Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the Woodbury American Legion Woman's Auxiliary and a member of the Woodbury Historical Society. She will be sorely missed by her adoring family including her husband, David H. Adams; son, Richard Adams and his wife, Barbara, of Highland Mills; daughter, Pamela Williams and her husband, Frederick, of Monroe; grandchildren, Kymberlie, Keri and Kristi Adams of Brooklyn and Jonathan and Brendan Williams of Monroe; as well as several loving nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by sisters, Beatrice Sage, Mable Gilpatrick, and Blanche Schiro; and brothers, Ivory and Robert Goodwin. RALPH "RON" MORGAN

Clintondale, N.Y. - Ralph "Ron" Morgan, of Clintondale, a self-employed plumbing & heating professional and lifetime resident of the area, entered into rest suddenly on Monday, September 6, 2004 in Connecticut. He was 53. Ron was born June 29, 1951 in Newburgh to Ralph and Josephine Goldy Morgan, who survive in Newburgh. A member of Gardnertown United Methodist Church, Ron owned and operated R. Morgan Mechanical with his son in Clintondale. He was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy and was an avid fisherman. A family statement read "Our Dad was a well-loved person, devoted loving husband and father, and a friend to all that came into his life. He was a dedicated golfer; deep sea fisherman and NASCAR fan. He worked very hard to achieve the lifelong dream of owning his own company with his son. Everyone that knew our dad knew that he was a very special person. He will be deeply missed by all." Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Geraldine "Geri" Cables Morgan, at home; his daughter, Aimee Conklin and her fiancé Bruce McAllister of Ohio; his son, Andrew Morgan of Clintondale; his brother, Stephen Morgan and his wife Pat of Wallkill; his sister, Susan Luciano and her husband, Tony, of Bethel, Conn.; his grandchildren, Sierra Conklin, Austin Conklin and Bridgett McAllister, all of Ohio; nieces and nephews, Heather, Holly, Chris and Scott Hagar, Kyle, Tyler, Cheyenne and Ryan Morgan, and Jenn and Matt Luciano; many, many good friends, and his puppy Zoe. He was predeceased by a sister, Patricia Morgan Hagar. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 9 at the Brooks-DiDonato Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh, NY 12550. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 10 at Gardnertown United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Gardnertown cemetery, Newburgh. . NELLIE LINDER Goshen, N.Y. Nellie Linder, a 3-year resident of the area, entered into peace on September 6, 2004 at the Glen Arden Health Care Center in Goshen after a courageous struggle with Parkinson's Disease. She was 80. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 39 years, Bertil Herman Linder. Nellie was born in Garfield on July 24, 1924, the daughter of Nicholas and Julia Wlodychak, both immigrants from Russia. Nellie attended public high school in Garfield and fulfilled her goal of becoming a licensed practical nurse at the age of 48. Her life's work was to serve the most vulnerable patients, the mentally ill and the elderly. She was an LPN on the Psychiatric floor of the Bergen Pines Hospital in Paramus, N.J. and continued her career as the medication nurse at the Van Dyke Nursing Home in Ridgewood, N.J. An avid reader, she volunteered at the Washington Township Library after retiring from the medical profession. Nellie was known for her wit, warmth and generosity, and leaves behind many friends in Bergen County and the Glen Arden Retirement Community in Goshen. She is survived by her daughter, Joan Linder of Montgomery; son and his wife, Richard and Laura Linder; granddaughter, Nicole Linder of Westwood; and brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Marilyn Wlodychak of Cedar Grove. There will be no public visitation, services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Michael J. JULIUS DAVID HARBURGER

Florida, N.Y. - Julius David Harburger, a man who loved a great yarn and spun more than a few, transitioned September 5, 2004 at Schervier Pavilion, Warwick. He was 85. Mr. Harburger is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Brenda Scott Harburger; five children: Linda Park and her husband Matthew, Mary Sue Rynecki and her husband Nick, Julius D. Harburger, Jr, Jay, Paul Harburger and Stephen Harburger, as well as one grandson, David Rynecki and his wife Marcia Vickers; and two great-grandchildren: Christopher and Carter. He is also survived by his sister, Suzanne Shapiro and her husband Alan. The son of Sarah Moser Harburger and Benjamin Franklin Harburger, Mr. Harburger was born on January 4, 1919 in New York City. He served honorably in the United States Army Air Corp between 1940 and 1945 in Central America as a weather observer and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He dreamed of becoming a writer. After the war he started at the bottom as an office clerk in a New York City advertising agency sharpening pencils and distributing mail. Her persisted and became a copywriter, penning untold popular ads for Ivory Liquid, Cascade, Duncan Hines, Jeep, Spiedel and many other national brands. He retired as Sr. Vice President, Creative Director at Compton Advertising. He remained active writing books (including one work of poems that he self-published for each of his children), participating in community affairs (serving as President of the Rotary Club in Livingston Manor and later as a Board Member of the Warwick Valley Rotary Club), as well as operating an ad agency with his wife. He will be remembered by those who knew him as a spiritual person and a fine human being who like a well crafted story. His daughters recall the many characters he invented for bedtime stories and sons, his sons and grandsons remember the stories he recounted about great athletes he had seen from Babe Ruth to Bobby Jones. And he fascinated his great-grandsons with the mysterious robot that swept around the bottom of his pool. He will be sorely missed. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 11th at the United Methodist Church, New Milford, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to the Warwick Valley Rotary Club. P.O. ROGER S. ROOSA

Port Jervis, N.Y. - Roger S. Roosa, a retired equipment operator for the City of Port Jervis Highway Dept., and lifelong area resident, died Monday, September 13, 2004 at the Orange County Health and Residential Center in Goshen. He was 83. The son of the late Rev. John Roosa and Mary Ellen Mitchell Roosa, he was born September 26, 1920 in Hainesville, N.J. He was the widower of Agnes Allen Roosa. He was a veteran of WWII, US Army. Survivors include his stepchildren; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be private at Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis. The Rev. Robert Cassidy will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Grove cemetery, Matamoras, Pa. Napanoch, N.Y. - Thomas R. Pinkerous Sr. of Napanoch, a lifelong resident, and a retired baker at Eastern New York Correctional Facility, Napanoch, died September 14, 2004 at home. He was 64. The son of Stanley and Ruby Pinkerous, he was born October 13, 1939 in Ellenville. He was the widower of Patricia Brust Pinkerous. He was a member of The Church of St. Mary and St. Andrew in Ellenville. Survivors include four children, Thomas R. Pinkerous Jr. of Stone Ridge, Deborah Laclaverie of Santa Fee, N.H., Christopher Pinkerous of Napanoch, and Paul Pinkerous of Ellenville; a brother, Peter Pinkerous of the state of Florida; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Friends may call at the Loucks Funeral Home, Inc., Route 209, Ellenville on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, at the Church of St. Mary and St. Andrew, 137 S. Main St., Ellenville. Cremation will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements by Loucks Funeral Home, Inc., Ellenville.

RAE BATINKOFF

North Hutchinson Island, Fla. - Rae Batinkoff, 84, of North Hutchinson Island, died September 7, 2004 at Wuesthoff Health System in Melbourne, Fla. after a prolonged illness. Mrs. Batinkoff was born July 31, 1920 in Brooklyn and lived in Ferndale until she and her husband, Lawrence, who predeceased her, retired to North Hutchinson Island, Fort Pierce, Fla. in 1971. She was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. For many years she was the bookkeeper for the family hatchery business. She was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Community General Hospital and also a member of the Ferndale Synagogue. While in Florida, she was an active member of the North Beach Association and congregant of the Beth Israel Temple, Port St. Lucie, Fla. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed gardening. Surviving are her son, Barry Batinkoff of Glenmont; her brother, Leon Taslitt of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; her nephew and niece, Bennett and Doris Stern of Woodbourne; and niece, Dawn T. Jones of Falls Church, Va.; her nephew, Wayne Taslitt of Chicopee, Ma.; and her grandson, Randall Batinkoff of Santa Monica, Calif. Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 19 at Beth El Memorial Park, Fort Pierce, Fla. Arrangements are under the direction of Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach, Fla.
