Mr. Ralph `Buster' Smith
OTEGO — Mr. Ralph "Buster" Smith, 73, of Otego, died Saturday evening, July 4, 1998 at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 9, 1924 in Otego the son of Clarence and Ethel Smith.

He married Alta Davis on April 11, 1947 in Otego.

Ralph was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army.

Buster was a lifelong resident of Otego, and graduated from Otego Central School.

He was a retired inspector at Amphenol in Sidney.

Buster was a member of the Otego American Legion Post No. 1555 and also was a member and past chief of the Otego Fire Department.

He had a love for his family, friends, his country, nature, and the fire department and will be greatly missed by all.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Alta Smith of Otego; two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Ron Haggerty Sr., of Bradenton, Fla., and Patricia and Mike D'Haem of Islamorada, Fla.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Richard and Valerie Smith of Gordonsville, Va., and Jack Smith of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Jessica Hintz, Forrest Smith, Darren Smith, Christel Haggerty, Ronald Haggerty Jr., Megan D'Haem and Michael D'Haem; two sisters-in-law and their spouses, Isabel and Duane Scofield and Roberta and Don Colley; three brothers-in-law and their spouses, Russell Southard, Richard and Dorothy Davis and Don and Betty Davis; 12 nieces, four nephews and their spouses; one aunt, Florabel Smith and one cousin, Helen Mulkins.

Ralph was predeceased by one sister, Marguerite Southard and one niece, Jean Moore.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 1998 at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday evening, July 7, 1998 for those who wish to call.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Otego Fire Department, River Street, Otego, N.Y. 13825 in loving memory of Ralph "Buster" Smith.

Ruth Armstrong
PITTSFIELD — Ruth Armstrong, 73, went to be with the Lord on July 4, 1998, following a brief illness. She was at her home in Pittsfield at the time of her passing.

She was born Jan. 29, 1925 in Susquehanna, Pa., the daughter of William Tracy and Susie (Meader) Keene.

She moved to Gilbertsville at a young age where she spent most of her school days and then later moved to Watervliet.

She was married in Norwich on Feb. 6, 1943, to Leslie Armstrong; he survives.

After working on the family farm and caring for numerous foster children and family day-care children, Ruth worked as a nurse's aide at Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.

After retiring in 1990, she returned to work in 1993 at the Chase Memorial Day Care Center taking care of babies until she was admitted to the hospital on May 28, 1998.

Besides her husband Les, she is survived by her children, James and Eleanor Armstrong of New Hartford, Patricia and Jerry Nial of Earlville, Ruth Armstrong of Lancaster and Ann Armstrong of Farmington, N.H. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Frances Keene of Oneida and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one son, Jeffery Armstrong in 1992.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 7, 1998 2 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin with the Rev. Stephen Reese of the Columbus Community Church officiating.

Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Calling hours will be Monday, July 6, 1998 at 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Lloyd G. Williams
COPAKE FALLS — Lloyd G. Williams, 84, of Copake Falls died July 1, 1998, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.

He was born in Fairhaven, Vt. on March 9, 1914, the son of the late John Williams and Margaret (Roberts) Williams.

He married the late Helen G. (Griffith) Williams on May 29, 1943, in Pultney, Vt.

He was an English teacher both at Roeliff Jansen and Ockawamick Central School and retired in 1978.

He has been a resident of Copake Falls since 1950, previously living in Hobart.

He was a member of Roeliff Jansen Lion's Club, Hillsdale Masonic Lodge No. 612 F&AM, was on the Board of Directors of Camphill Village, Copake Town Board and the Columbia County Shriners Club.

He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.

He was affiliated with the Copake United Methodist Church as an organist and trustee.

He attended Fairhaven Public Schools and was a 1939 graduate of Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt. He received his master's degree in education from the former Albany State Teachers College. He did post-graduate work at Columbia University in New York City. Mr. Williams was often a representative to the New York State Teacher's Association.

He is survived by a daughter, Janice W. Xeller of Delmar; a son, J. Gary Williams of Hopewell Junction and Stamford as well as two grandchildren, two nieces and two nephews.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 6, at the United Methodist Church of Copake. Burial will be in the West Copake Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, Route 22, Copake.

Contributions can be sent to the Community Rescue Squad, Copake, N.Y. 12516.

Howard A. Dyer
CHERRY VALLEY — Howard A. Dyer, 79, of Irish Hollow Road, Cherry Valley, died Thursday morning at home after a long illness.

Born and educated in Colesville, N.J., he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson and Elizabeth Kinnie Dyer.

Mr. Dyer moved to Fort Plain in 1947. In 1959 he moved to Fort  Johnson and lived in that area until moving to Cherry Valley in 1980.

During World War II, he served with the Army.

From 1947 to 1949, Mr. Dyer worked as a manager for G.L.F. Bottled Gas Co. opening branches in Fort Plain and Middletown. In 1949 he went to work for Prudential Insurance Co. as an Agent for 25 years retiring in 1974.

Mr. Dyer was an avid outdoorsman and a member of the Cherry Valley Fish and Game Club.

Mr. Dyer was of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include his wife, Daryl R. Shaffer Dyer, whom he married Jan. 20, 1948; two daughters, Deborah Skivington of Fort Plain and Katharine Brust of Canajoharie; five grandchildren, Mark S. Skivington of Gloversville, Beth A. and Mary K. Skivington both of Fort Plain and Sarah L. and Diana J. Shibley, both of Canajoharie, and several nephews and nieces.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie.

A calling hour will precede the funeral service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery, Fort Plain.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, the Fort Plain Museum, or the Amerian Lung Association care of the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie, N.Y. 13317.

Charles Betz
HOBART — Charles Betz, 74, of Hobart, died July 2, 1998, at home.

He was born June 3, 1924 in Cobleskill, the son of David and Irene (Iisum) Betz.

He married Mary Peters on Sept. 25, 1954.

He was a member of the U.S. Army serving in China, Burma and India.

He was employed by the New York Telephone Company for 40 years in the Cobleskill, Stamford and Cortland areas.

He was a 1942 graduate of Cobleskill.

He was a charter member of the Cobleskill VFW No. 5088, Telephone Pioneers, Capital District Basha of the China, Burma and India Veteran's (CBI.)

He is survived by his wife, Mary at home; children, Joanne, David, Jim and his wife, Lorraine; grandchildren, Liahna and Nathaniel; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Pat Betz of Schoharie; cousins, Geraldine Manchester of Cobleskill and Peter Betz of Fort  Johnson and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Charlotte Beacraft.

A funeral service will be on July 6, 1998 at 1 p.m. at the Hobart Presbyterian Church.

Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 7-9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart and Davenport.

Alice E. Farrier
SIDNEY — Mrs. Alice E. Farrier, 91, a resident at the Skilled Nursing Facility, The Hospital, Sidney, passed away Friday, July 3, 1998, at her residence.

Mrs. Farrier was formerly of Poughkeepsie.

She was born Oct. 27, 1906 in Poughkeepsie. She was the daughter of the late August and Charlotte Tuttle Brenner.

On Nov. 9, 1924, she married John F. Farrier in Poughkeepsie. He predeceased her April 22, 1982.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Mrs. Doris Brown of Sidney, Mrs. Deardre and Clifford Goulette of Unadilla; one brother, George Brenner of Poughkeepsie; sister-in-law, Louise Leane of Poughkeepsie; seven grandchildren and families, Mark and Bonnie Lown, Lori Joseph, Pam and Gary Gilbert, Jeffrey and Debbie Goulette, Gail and Jim Delaney and John and Jim Goulette as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 1998 from the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Dorothy Tyler
FLY CREEK — Mrs. Dorothy Tyler, 88, of Fly Creek passed away on Thursday evening, July 2, 1998, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Raymond Gage in Roseboom.

Mrs. Tyler was born in Exeter Center on April 23, 1910, the daughter of Harry and Marietta (Clark) Strait.

She attended local schools.

On Jan. 4, 1930, she was married to Kenneth E. Tyler Sr.; he died Feb. 10, 1987.

For many years she was employed by various families in the area as a domestic.

Dorothy's life centered around her family — especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed the members of the Pierstown Independent Club.

She is survived by one son, Kenneth E. Tyler Jr. of Cooperstown; a daughter, Mrs. Betty Gage of Roseboom; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery on Monday, July 6, 1998 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Eileen Kellogg, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Emily L. Ingalls
ONEONTA — Memorial services for Emily L. Ingalls, 93, who died June 26, 1998, will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 1998, in the Embury Room of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta with the Rev. William D. Boutin, pastor, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.
