Ada Ruth Platt
ARKVILLE — Ada Ruth Platt, 71, of Hill Street, Arkville died July 10, 1998, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital.
She was born Jan. 8, 1927, in Lexington, the daughter of Harrison Morris and Emma Bronson.
She married Welton Platt on Feb. 24, 1946, in Arkville. He died Oct. 12, 1990.
She was employed as a nurse's aide at Margaretville Memorial Hospital for many years. She was a lifelong area resident who enjoyed quilting.
She is survived by one son, David Platt of Andes; four daughters, Rose Ann Lasich of Dryden, Wanda Finch of Margaretville, Linda Platt of Arkville and Sandra Shultis of Arkville; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two sisters, Marguerite Lane of Margaretville and Ann Slater of Saugerties as well as by nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 13, 1998, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. R.L. Donahue officiating.
Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Contributions in memory of Ada Platt can be made to the Arkville Fire Department.
Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
Daphne G. Kaye
JACKSON, Miss. — Daphne G. Kaye, 50, daughter of Evelyn Munsell Griffin and the late Sheldon J. Griffin of Crownepointe Drive, and a former school teacher, died of cancer Thursday, June 25, 1998, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.
Mrs. Kaye, the former Daphne J. Griffin, was born in Tucson, Ariz., in December 1947, graduated from high school in Little Falls and received her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from the State University of New York College at Geneseo. She taught school in the Rochester area for two years and the Metuchen, N.J. school district for many years before moving to Jackson, Miss., in 1985.
Mrs. Kaye appeared on the television show "Jeopardy" in 1973.
She is survived by her husband, John; daughter, Lindsay Kaye of Jackson, Miss.; her mother, Evelyn Griffin of Norwich; a brother, Paul Griffin of Albany; nieces, Sarah, Rebecca and Amber Griffin; nephew, David Griffin; uncles, Douglas Griffin of Toms River, N.J. and George D. Griffin of Williston, Fla.; an aunt, Bernice Cole of Rochester; and several cousins.
Mrs. Kaye was predeceased by Henry Munsell.
Robert B. Veit
SYRACUSE — Robert B. Veit, 75, formerly of Margaretville, died July 9, 1998, at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital in Syracuse.
He was born Sept. 27, 1922, in Oxford, the son of Herman Veit and Gladys Oldfield.
He married Betty Stahl on Aug. 21, 1944, in Honesdale, Pa.
He was a member of the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945. He was the owner of the Evergreen Bowling Lanes from 1960-1986.
He was a member of the Margaretville Fire Department for over 45 years and the Middletown American Legion Post No. 216.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Veit of Holiday, Fla.; one daughter, Jan V. Bellair and son-in-law, George of Arlington, Texas.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville with the Rev. George Carpenter.
Private committal services will be at the Margaretville Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Contributions in Bob's memory may be made to the Sarah House, 130 Roberts Ave., Syracuse, N.Y., 13207.

Anton Gergich Jr.
ISELIN, N.J. — Anton Gergich Jr., 90, of Iselin, N.J. and formerly of Worcester, died Friday, July 10, 1998, at Rahway Hospital in Rahway, N.JU.
He was born July 6, 1908, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Anton Sr. and Maria (Kvasnicka) Gergich.
He married Angela Kenik in 1931 in Worcester. She predeceased him April 14, 1976.
Mr. Gergich lived in Italy until the age of 16, when he moved to the Worcester area in 1925 and then in 1994 he moved to New Jersey.
He owned and operated a farm in the Worcester area for many years and was also employed for the D&H Railroad and the Worcester Highway Department.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester and the SNPJ Society.
He is survived by two sons, Anthony Gergich of Leonia, N.J. and Stanley Gergich of Gloversville; two daughters, Mary Taylor of Elizabethtown, Ky. and Josephine Gutierrez of Iselin, N.J.; two half brothers, William Gergich of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Justus Gergich of North Hills, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Anna Rose and two sisters (Mary) Mrs. Rudolf Dedek and Antonia Gergich and a brother, Albin Gergich.
A funeral liturgy service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 13, 1998, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.
The Rev. William Crandall will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Worcester.
Calling hours were Sunday, July 12, 1998 from 7-9 p.m. and Monday, July 13 from noon until service time at 1 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.
Marian H. Pierce
UNADILLA — Mrs. Marian H. Pierce, 100, of Riverview Home for Adults, 3 Main St., Unadilla died Friday, July 10, 1998, at The Hospital, Sidney.
She was born, March 30, 1898, in Schuyler Lake, the daughter of Fred and Laura (Crim) Hull.
She was first married to Jess Aplin in 1917 and following his death, she was married to Harold Pierce, who died in 1960.
She was a former resident of Sidney and at one time was employed at the former Cummings Clothing Store in Sidney.
She and her late husband, Harold, were former caretakers of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney.
Since 1971, she has been a resident of Unadilla and in June 1989 she became a resident of the Riverview Home for Adults.
She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney.
Mrs. Pierce is survived by six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson and a nephew.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Laura Jean, and a son, Norman.
Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla with the Rev. John L. Scott, rector of Christ Church of Gilbertsville and Zion Church of Morris, officiating.
Burial will be in Schuyler Lake Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. Wednesday until service time at 11 a.m.
Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.
Raymond L. Race
OTEGO — Raymond L. Race, 80, of 66 Main St., Otego, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born on March 5, 1918, in West Taconic, the son of John E. and Bessie Race.
Ray is survived by his three sisters, Mary Carle, Beulah Riegel and Dorothy Dolan. Ray, was also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Ray, was predeceased by his sister, Ethel Lachappel, and his brother, Orien Race.
Ray enjoyed the simple pleasures and treasures of life. Ray was a very people oriented person, who was a caring and sharing person.
Ray was a long time New York Yankee fan and he always enjoyed playing pool, going fishing and spending time with his friends.
Ray had a lifelong interest in meteorology and the wonders of nature. Ray was a member of the UHC Bell Choir and he very much enjoyed his senior day program.
"Uncle Ray" was a special member of the Mabie family and he will be remembered for his sense of humor and his fun-loving spirit.
A memorial service will he held at the Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta on Tuesday, July 14, 1998 at 4 p.m. with the Rev. William Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.
Burial will be in West Copake Cemetery, Copake.
Frederick D. Lottridge
WEST BURLINGTON — Frederick D. Lottridge, 39, of West Burlington died July 12, 1998, in Cooperstown.
He was born May 2, 1959, in Oneonta, the son of Ray S. and Marguerite (Remington) Lottridge.
He married Karen E. Davis on Aug. 12, 1983; she survives.
His childhood was spent in New Berlin. He graduated from New Berlin Central School.
He is survived by his children, Janelle, Justin, Sara and Meghan who live at home in West Burlington; his beloved uncle, Lewis and his wife, Barbara Lottridge of Stoneridge and several nieces, nephews and two great-nephews; two sisters, Linda Schriber of Westbrook and Diane Orlowski of Marcy.
He is predeceased by one brother, David Lottridge.
He was a service technician for Agway of Sherburne.
He was a member of Phoebus Lodge No. 82 of New Berlin; honorary member of the Edmeston Fire Department and he had served as a councilman for the town of Burlington for three years.
He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and camping.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, officiating.
A private burial service will be held at the Columbus Corners Cemetery, town of Columbus.
Calling hours are on Tuesday, July 14, 1998 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.
Memorial donations may be made to the Edmeston Fire Department or Emergency Squad.
Leah Farrington
ENDICOTT — Leah Farrington, 86, of Endicott, and formerly of Schenevus, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City.
Leah was born June 13, 1912, in Berlin, Germany to Russian parents, Nicholas and Lydia (Utgoff) Markoff. She immigrated to the United States in 1921.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Gregory Slezskinsky and her husband of 46 years, William Farrington.
She is survived by her son, Nicholas G. Farrington of Rockville, Md.; her daughter and son-in-law, Deana and Fred Hottenstein and grandchildren, Erich and Jess of Endicott.
She lived in Schenevus for 38 years before moving to Endicott.
She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta. She retired after working at Bresee's Department Store for 18 years.
As a young woman, she studied horticulture, and throughout all her life, she had a deep appreciation for all living things. She loved gardening and baking, and especially enjoyed caring for family and friends.
The funeral service will be held at the Heller Funeral Home, in Schenevus, officiated by Father Richard Frey, at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 16, 1998.
Burial will immediately follow in the Schenevus Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home, Thursday afternoon, from 1 p.m. until service time.
Expressions can be made to the town of Union Emergency Squad or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad.
