Russell C. Roly Sr.
MOODUS, Conn. — Russell C. Roly Sr., 85, of Moodus, Conn., husband of Eleanor (Augur) Roly died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at Middlesex Hospital, Middletown.

He was born in Hamden on Aug. 9, 1912, son of the late Alphonsus and Mary (Cuny) Lawler and has resided in Moodus for several years, having formerly lived in Westchester and North Branford.

Before his retirement, he was a sales manager for Kraft Foods, Seal-test Division.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Russell C. Roly Jr. of East Hampton, Conn.; a daughter, Joan Marie Augur of Cooperstown; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

The funeral procession will leave the Spencer Funeral Home, 112 East Main St., East Hampton, Monday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral liturgy at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Church, East Hampton.

Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 7-9 p.m. Those who wish may send memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, 790 Maple Ave., Hartford, Conn., 06145.

Marjorie K. Lyon
VERO BEACH, Fla. — Mrs. Marjorie K. Lyon, 81, of Vero Beach, Fla. died July 14 at her residence.

She was a former 49-year resident of Lakeland, Fla.

Mrs. Lyon was born in Treadwell and was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Frank M. Lyon.

Mrs. Lyon was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lakeland, Fla., where she was active in the Wesley Philathea Sunday School class and the United Methodist Women. She had a lifetime interest in music and was a member of the Lakeland Tuesday Music Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Priscilla L. Haynes of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Janet L. Judy of Longwood, Fla.; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one brother, Carlton B. Kellogg of Treadwell.

A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First United Methodist Church, Lakeland.

Friends who wish may contribute to the First United Methodist Church for Disaster Relief, 72 Lake Morton Drive, Lakeland, Fla., 33801.

Yates Funeral Home of Fort Pierce, Fla., was in charge of arrangements.

Marcy Fancher
BLOOMVILLE — Marcy Fancher, 15, died Saturday, July 18, 1998 at Albany Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 27, 1982 at Stamford Hospital, Stamford, the daughter of Douglas Fancher and Connie (Mattice) Fancher.

She was a student at South Kortright Central School.

Survivors are her father and mother, Douglas and Connie Fancher; two sisters, Chrissy Dougherty of Oneonta and Shawna Fancher of Bloomville; three brothers, Steven Fancher of Bloomville, William Fancher of Bloomville and Matthew Fancher of Bloomville; her grandparents, Robert and Doris Fancher of South Kortright and Fred and Nellie Schermerhorn of South Gilboa and three nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, July 22, 1998 at 2 p.m. at the Bloomville United Methodist Church with Pastor Clinton Lunt officiating.

Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Calling hours are tonight from 7 to 9 and Tuesday, July 21, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Bloomville United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by Mac Arthur Funeral Home, Hobart and Davenport.

Gwendol M. Whitney
ONEONTA — Mr. Gwendol M. "Whit" Whitney, 80, of Wilber Park Apartments, Oneonta died Saturday, July 18, 1998 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Mr. Whitney was born Jan. 22, 1918 in Oneonta, the son of Milton and Leta (Smith) Whitney.

He married Florence A. Boardman on Sept. 1, 1945 in Schenectady. Mrs. Whitney died Jan. 15, 1994.

Mr. Whitney was a 1935 graduate of Oneonta High School and a 1939 graduate of Hartwick College.

He worked in the State Health Laboratory in Albany for one year before entering the military service in 1940. He served for five years during WW II and was a B-26 bomber pilot flying out of North Africa. He was shot down March 8, 1944 and spent 14 months as a prisoner of war in Italy, Austria, Poland and Germany. He then served 10 years in the Air Force Reserves.

He was employed in the Production Planning Department of the Bendix Corp. in Sidney for 28 years prior to his retirement in August 1979.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the American Legion and the American Ex-Prisoners of War.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy W. and Richard Walley of Albany; his son and daughter-in-law, Donald M. and Patty Whitney of Helena, Mont.; six grandchildren, Tyan and Derek Walley of Albany, Jason, Kyle, Brett and Tanya Whitney of Helena, Mont. and several nieces and nephews.

Gwendol was predeceased by two brothers, Darwin R. and Sheryl G. Whitney.

Funeral sevices will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta with the Rev. Marie E. King, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta, officiating.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta today from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish to call.

Mr. Whitney will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris and his ashes will be interred at the Schenevus Cemetery, Schenevus at the convenience of the family.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be made to the Senior Nutrition Program, care of Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Gwendol M. "Whit" Whitney.

Elizabeth A. Zintel
MILFORD — Elizabeth A. Zintel, 88, of 3197 State Highway 28, Town of Milford died Saturday, July 18, 1998 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Feb. 7, 1910 in Yonkers, the daughter of Michael and Mary-Ellen (Dyer) Finn.

She married Peter A. Zintel on Feb. 28, 1933 in Yonkers.

While a resident of Yonkers, she was employed at the Alexander Smith Carpet Shop as a weaver and loom setter.

Elizabeth was an avid Bingo player and a knitter, making original-design sweaters for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as a multitude of area children and for area doctors and their children, who all will remember Nanny's warm and creative sweaters.

She also enjoyed ceramics as well as oil painting of buildings and landscapes.

She was a chapter member of the Milford American Legion Post 1566.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Peter; her daughter, Beverly Beach of Milford; her son, Peter D. of Oneonta; her daughter Adlain Zintel of Maryland; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and her devoted cat, Icabod.

She was predeceased by three sisters and one brother.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 1998 at Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford at 4 p.m. with Fr. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will follow at Milford Cemetery, Milford.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, July 21, 1998 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in her name to the Milford Emergency Squad in Milford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Richard Milton Shepard
COOPERSTOWN — Richard Milton Shepard, 88, of 74 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, died Monday morning, July 20, 1998, at his home.

He was born July 7, 1910, in Schenectady, the son of Milton B. and Anna (Osterhoudt) Shepard.

He married Mollie B. Welden on June 8, 1935. Mrs. Shepard died Jan. 23, 1994.

A long time resident of Cooperstown, Dick graduated from Cooperstown High School in 1930.

During World War II, he was employed at the Scintilla Plant in Sidney as part of the war effort. For many years, he owned and operated Augur's Bookstore.

Dick was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Native Sons of Cooperstown, a charter member of the Lions Club of Cooperstown and sang in the Men's Chorus for several years.

Very active in the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross, Dick had also served on the Cooperstown Village Board and had been a trustee at the First National Bank.

He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Marianna and Charles Garrett of McLean, Va., Janis and Cecil Moon of Neosho, Wis., and the Rev. Marjorie Shepard Matney of Endicott; two grandaughters, Joann Rames and Mrs. Michael (Sarah) Farfield; one grandson, Kristopher R. Matney; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 1998, at the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown with the Rev. Douglas Deer, pastor, officiating.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, 19 Elm St., Cooperstown, N.Y., 13326 or Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Greta E. Epp
WESTFORD — Mrs. Greta E. Epp, 71, of Westford, died late Sunday evening, July 19, 1998, at her home.

She was born on May 30, 1927, in Freeport, Long Island, a daughter of Fritz E. and Anna (Warnken) Helbig.

She married Martin H. Epp on June 3, 1950, in Williston Park, Long Island.

After her birth, Greta and her family moved to Flushing, Queens where she went on to graduate from Flushing High School. She then attended Grace Institute Secretarial School and later began working on Long Island and in New York City. At night, she attended Pratt Institute where she met her husband, Martin.

Greta also worked for Burroughs on Long Island, first as a receptionist and operator and then advancing on to a position in sales. Her last job was as an executive secretary for a law firm in Stamford, Conn.

In 1973, Greta and Martin moved to Westford where she pursued her hobbies of collecting dolls and gardening. Greta loved nature and all animals and enjoyed creating rock gardens and bonsai trees.

She was of the Episcopal faith.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Martin of Westford; one son, Brian Epp of Durango,  Colo.; her mother, Mrs. Anna Helbig of The Meadows; one sister, Trudi Shanahan of Darien, Conn., and several cousins and other relatives in Germany.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Karen G. Epp, who died on Nov. 29, 1974, and her father, Fritz Helbig, who died on March 31, 1987.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 1998, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Canon George F. Franch, Rector Emeritus of Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

Burial will follow in Westville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening, July 22, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. when Greta's family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., 13820.
