Thelma G. Smith
FORT PLAIN — Mrs. Thelma G. Smith, 74, of Clinton Road, town of Minden, passed away July 20, 1998, after a short illness.

She was born Aug. 28, 1923, in the Stone Arabia section of the town of Palatine, the daughter of Arthur and Mabel (Dillenbeck) Snyder.

On Jan. 30, 1943, she married Robert J. Smith in the Lutheran Church, Fort Plain.

A lifelong area resident, Thelma was a 1941 graduate of Fort Plain Central School. She was a homemaker and worked on the family farm until retirement.

Mrs. Smith was an Avon representative for 35 years and an avid bowler.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Freysbush, and its Ladies Aid Society, and a member of the V.F.W. Post 3275 Auxiliary, Fort Plain.

Survivors include her husband, Robert J. Smith; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Sharon Smith of Fort Plain; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Ron Hollenbeck of Brooksville, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Darla Smith of Fort Plain; a brother, Clarence Snyder of Amsterdam; a sister, Katherine Werner of Fort Plain; five grandchildren, Kenneth, Tracy, Michael, Tammy and Kimberly Smith; a step-grandson, Delbert Hart; three great-grandsons; two step-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Moyer and in 1997 a son, Arlan Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 1998, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Freysbush with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.

Burial will follow in the Fort Plain Cemetery, Fort Plain.

Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22 at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley with a V.F.W. service at 7:30 p.m.

Contributions in Mrs. Smith's memory may be made to the V.F.W. Post 3275 Auxiliary Fund, St. John's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, or the South Minden Vol. Fire Dept.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Cherry Valley.

Manuel F. Castro
ONEONTA — Manuel F. Castro, 68, one of the founders of ABD Securities, a Wall Street investment firm, died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at his summer home in Oneonta after a long battle with lung cancer.

Manny, as he was familiarly known on the Street, was senior vice president in charge of operations at ABD when he retired in 1985.

Castro was born in New York City and reared in Boston and Bridgewater, Mass. He moved back to New York City in his early twenties, settling in Brooklyn Heights, later residing in Forest Hills and Bellerose, Queens.

He graduated from Hunter College and attended New York University Graduate School.

After retirement, he moved to Punta Gorda, Fla., where he turned to the theater, becoming involved with The Charlotte Players. He played leading roles in The Players' Mobile School Theater and featured roles in "Guys and Dolls" and "South Pacific."

Castro and his wife, Janet, received the first Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Awards from The Charlotte County Arts and Humanities Council in 1996.

Castro is survived by his wife, Janet; two children, Anne, a Minneapolis resident and Michael and his daughter-in-law, Jeanette, Cooperstown residents and a half-brother, Stephan Pivacek in Vernon, Conn.

A memorial service will be held in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn, on Sunday, Sept. 6.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., 13820; or The American Cancer Society.

Helen H. Liberati
DELHI — Helen H. Liberati, 73, of Delhi, formerly of Yonkers died Monday, July 20, 1998, at the Delaware Countryside Care Center, Delhi after an extended illness.

She was born April 19, 1925, in Yonkers, the daughter of Stella and Frank Siudym.

She married Quido Liberati at St. Casimirs Toman Catholic Church in Yonkers on Sept. 6, 1947.

She was a resident of Delhi since 1978 and previously lived in Yonkers.

She was employed at New York Telephone Co. as an operator for 8 years.

Mrs. Liberati was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker, who loved pets and wildlife.

While living in Delhi, she was a communicant of St. Peter's R. C. Church.

Surviving are two sons, John Liberati of  White Plains and Frank Liberati of Oneonta; two sisters, Irene DeLcompo of North Tarrytown and Anastatia Rizzolla of Monterey,  Calif.

She was predeceased by her husband, Quido Liberati and three brothers, Fred, Albert and William Siudym.

The family will be in attendance on Tuesday, July 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. with the Rev. Judy Thistle conducting a memorial service at 8:30 p.m.

Memorials in her name of Helen Liberati may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Moxley-McCall Funeral Home, Delhi.

Earl W. Fesler
ONEONTA — Earl W. Fesler, 86, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1911, in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of William and Lydia Fesler.
He married Marie L. Fisher on Jan. 16, 1939. She died on Feb. 15, 1982.

Earl served in the U.S. Army during World War II. For a period of 40 years, he was employed by the Coca Cola Co., and retired in 1976 as area manager.

He was a member of the Elm Park Methodist Church, BPOE 1312, American Legion Post 259, and the Oneonta Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Debra and Joseph Vagliardo of Oneonta; his grandson, William J. Vagliardo of Oneonta and a sister, Edyth Glionna of Schenectady.

He was predeceased by a brother and three sisters, Darwin Fesler, Marjorie Nichols, Doris Bryant and Lenora Forsythe.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

Friends are invited to attend a committal service in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery on Monday, July 27, 1998, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph A. Fiske officiating.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Oneonta Fire Department.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Frederick A. Hubbard
WORCESTER — Frederick A. Hubbard, 63, of Worcester, formerly of Schenevus died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at his residence.

He was born on March 24, 1935, in Schenevus, the son of Charles and Louise (Nellis) Hubbard.

He married Phyllis Althiser in 1958 in Maryland.

Mr. Hubbard was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving from 1952 to 1956.

He was a lifelong area resident. He worked as an equipment operator for the D & H Railroad.

He was a member of the D.A.V.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Hubbard of Maryland; two sons, David Hubbard and Fredrick W. Hubbard, both of Schenevus; a daughter, Barbara Amo of Worcester; two step-daughters, Bonnie Buck and Sylvia Hill, both of Worcester; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Hubbard and Robert Hubbard, both of Norwich; three sisters, A. Elizabeth Hontz of Cleona, Mary Pier of Schenevus and Emilie Stillwell of Munnsville and seveal nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Donald Hubbard.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 24, 1998, at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus with the Rev. George I. Goodwin, retired, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Thursday, July 23, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mr. Hubbard to the Catskill Area Hospice, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Caroline Estella Stoddart
DELHI — Caroline Estella Stoddart, 75, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, in the Roscoe Nursing Home, Roscoe.

She was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Delhi, the daughter of Margaret (Gardner) and Griswald Stoddart.

She never married. Miss Stoddart was a member of the Cabin Hill Presbyterian Church and also liked history.

Surviving are a sister, Eleanor Stoddart of Delhi; a brother, John Stoddart of Sidney and a niece, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, with the Rev. James McEathron officiating.

There will be no family calling hours.

Arrangements are by Moxley-McCall Funeral Home, Delhi.

Bernice G. Faulkner
STAMFORD — Bernice G. Faulkner, 81, of 33 Prospect St., Stamford died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Oct. 30, 1916, in Harpersfield the daughter of Theron and Maritta (Gordon) Goss.

She married Clayton P. Faulkner on July 22, 1938, in Harpersfield. Clayton died Dec. 29, 1995.

Bernie was a resident of the Stamford area all of her life. She attended a one-room school house in Harpersfield during the elementary grades. She graduated from the Stamford Union Free High School in 1935.

For several years, she was a nurses aide at the former Bathgate Hospital in Stamford. For many years she worked with her husband in the family business, Faulkner's Sport Center.

Bernie was a member of the Stamford United Methodist Church and served as president of the United Methodist Women's Group for many years. She also served as Methodist Church lay leader to the N.Y. Annual Conference in 1983, 1993 and 1997.

In the 1960's, Bernie held several offices in the Stamford Central School P.T.A. She was very active in both the Stamford and Harpersfield Historical societies. In the early 1960's, she was named "The Friendliest Citizen" in Stamford.

In 1988, Bernie was named Citizen of the Year by the Col. Harper Grange of Harpersfield. She was master of ceremonies of the Stamford Central School Alumni at their annual banquet.

She was also a member of the Stamford-Harpersfield Senior Citizens. Bernie enjoyed her family relationships and her church family a great deal.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Charles Koss of Binghamton; a son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Maria Faulkner of Naugatuck, Conn.; five grandchildren, Bud and Michael Koss, Felisa Mestre, Elana Faulkner, Jack Faulkner; three great-grandchildren, Chaz, Caleigh and Nicholas Koss and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, 1998, at the Stamford United Methodist Church with the Rev. Elliott Oakes, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 West Main St., Stamford on Friday afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance between 7 and 9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Bernie's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.
