Barbara Eakeley Hall
ONEONTA — Barbara Eakeley Hall, 82, of Oneonta died Saturday, July 25, 1998 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was born April 10, 1916 in Oneonta, the daughter of Harry M. and Ethel (Scott) Eakeley, and lived her entire life in the West End area of Oneonta.

She married William B. Hall Jr., Aug. 6, 1942 in Oneonta. He died Jan. 18, 1991.

She gradauted from Oneonta High School and Oneonta Normal School and did her graduate work at Buffalo State Teachers College and the State University College at Oneonta. She began her teaching career in 1938 at the old Oneonta Plains School and ended at Riverside School where she taught sixth grade, retiring in 1973.

She was a former member and Sunday School teacher of Elm Park Church for many years, later becoming a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta where she belonged to the Women's Association. She belonged to the National Retired Teachers' Association. She was a 50-year member of Martha Chapter No. 116 Order of Eastern Star, which she served for 25 years as treasurer. She was a member of the Oneonta Women's Club and a charter member of the Arnold Lake Association.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Susan Dillon of Pittsburgh, Pa., Karen L. Hall of New Hartford; a son, Richard Eakeley Hall of Gaithersburg, Md.; three grandchildren, Justin and Sarah Taillon and Kimberly Hall; a brother, M. Scott Eakeley of Westfield, N.J. and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, 1998 at the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta with the Rev. Marie King, pastor, officiating.

A reception will follow in the church social hall.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish may make contibutions to either the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta or the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St., Oneonta in memory of Mrs. Hall.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Lawrence Jackson
MIDDLEFIELD — Lawrence Jackson, 42, of Route 4, Middlefield, Otsego County, died Wednesday at home from injuries received in an accident at his residence.

Mr.  Jackson moved to Schenectady from Oneonta in 1958 and was educated at Guilderland High School.

He was employed as a mechanic for Tri-City.

Survivors include a son, Michael Smith of Amsterdam; his mother, Mary Tite  Jackson of Schenectady; three brothers, Keith E.  Jackson Jr. and Richard Jackson, both of Rotterdam, and Joseph  Jackson of Alplaus; a sister, Nancy Timlick of Schenectady; a stepsister, Mari Lou Curtin of Oneonta and his fiance, Nancy Cox of Middlefield.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Leszczynski Funeral Home, 778 Eastern Ave., Schenectady, where a service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

Burial will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1450 Western Ave., Albany, 12203.

Catherine Ives Sobers
HARPURSVILLE — Catherine Ives Sobers, 81, of Harpursville died Saturday at Wilson Medical Center.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Sobers had been an inspector for Bendix Corp. in Sidney.

She was a member of the Harpursville Baptist Church, Senior Citizens of Eastern Broome, Alice Rebekah Lodge H19, and the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers Local of Sidney.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Kenneth Ives, and her second husband, Alfred Sobers.

Mrs. Ives is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Vesta Ives of Harpursville; her daughter, Eileen Kane of Freeville; three granddaughters, Billy Jo Pitarra, Kendra Ives, Jennifer Kane, all of Harpursville; two grandsons, Dan Kane of Harpursville and Jimmy Kane of Freeville and one great-grandchild, Raven Pitarra. Dear friends, Melvin Pierce and Baker Meek, and several cousins also survive.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Tuesday, July 28, 1998 at 1 p.m. at the Harpursville Baptist Church, Cumber Road with the Rev. Michael Rowe and the Rev. William Fowler officiating.

Visiting hours are today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Osterhoudt-Leopold Funeral Home, Harpursville.

Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Harpursville Baptist Church or Beth-El Chapel, Harpursville would be appreciated.

Charlotte V. Klabel
MOUNT UPTON — Charlotte V. Klabel, 89, of Mount Upton, passed away Sunday, July 26, 1998, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

She was born June 14, 1909, in Kriescherville. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Augusta Vollmer Hansen.

On March 4, 1929, Charlotte married Hans Klabel in New York City. He predeceased her Sept. 7, 1952.

For several years, Mrs. Klabel was a clerk and bookkeeper for the Mount Upton Victory Store and for Wadsworth and Son, Mount Upton and Sidney.

She attended the Mount Upton United Methodist Church and was a member and past president of the Charles M. Townsend American Legion Auxiliary, Mount Upton, and the Chenango County American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by three daughters, Eileen Wurst of King of Prussia, Pa., Grace Carney of Sarasota, Fla., and Jean Harrington of Lusby, Md., also 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her four brothers and three sisters.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 30, 1998, from the Mount Upton United Methodist Church, Mount Upton, with the Rev. James Bartz, chaplain at the Orlando Regional Medical Center, Orlando, Fla., officiating.

Burial will be later at the family's convenience in the Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Mount Upton Emergency Squad or the Mount Upton Fire Department.

At Mrs. Klabel's request there will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Verda I. Bourn
NEW BERLIN — Verda I. Bourn, 80, of New Berlin died July 26, 1998, at home in New Berlin.

She was born March 17, 1918, in Pittsfield. The daughter of Tracy and Elva (Dixson) Moore.

She married Victor Bourn on May 20, 1937. He died Dec. 14, 1964.

Her childhood was spent in Mount Upton. She graduated from Mount Upton High School in 1936.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her children, Vincent and Pam Bourn of Honeoye Falls, Vaughn and Diane Bourn of Suffolk, Va., Ronnie and Bob Wadsworth of New Berlin, Valerie and Daniel Brisack of Mount Upton; daughter-in-law, Linda Bourn of Cooperstown; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Beverly Hewlett of Sherburne, many nieces and nephews and many dear friends in New Berlin.

She is predeceased by one son, Victor Bourn in 1979.

Calling hours are on Wednesday, July 29, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Funeral service will be on Thursday, July 30, 1998, at 10 a.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, officiating.

Interment will be in the Maple Wood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Berlin Emergency Squad, New Berlin.

Irene E. LaSalle
STAMFORD — Irene E. LaSalle, 62, died at home Sunday, July 26, 1998, after a long illness.

Irene was born in Ossining and was an area resident since 1952.

She was employed by the Stamford Library, and during her service of 30 years held the positions of librarian and director.

Irene is survived by her husband, Allen; her daughters, Theresa LaSalle of Edgewater, N.J., and Nanette LaSalle of Topanga,  Calif.; a sister, Carol McLain of Davenport and a brother, Roger Persons of Rising Sun, Md.

Friends may call this evening between the hours of 7 and 9 p.m., at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St., (corner of Liberty), Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Irene's name to the Catskill Area Hospice of Oneonta.

Committal service will be private.

Funeral arrangements are by the William A. Tari Funeral Home.

Charles W. Pickering Jr.
SIDNEY — Charles W. Pickering Jr., 78, of Sidney died after a short illness Monday, July 27, 1998, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

Charles was born to the late Charles W. Sr., and Catherine Gotwals Pickering on Aug. 6, 1919, in Dureyea, Pa.

He married Marion MacConnell in Scranton, Pa., on April 25, 1942.

Charles was a veteran of the United States Navy. He served from 1937 to 1946. His first tour of duty in World War II was on the U.S.S. Warrington; his second tour he served in the submarine service in support of Philippine resistance on the following subs: PomPom, Nautilus, Narhwall, Peto and Puffer.

Charles was also a member of Lodge of the Elks No. 2175, Sidney; Loyal Order of Moose No. 277, Sidney; 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, Moosic, Pa.; and V.F.W. Arrandale Post No. 7914, Sidney.

Charles was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed camping and after retiring from E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney in 1980 traveled the entire United States and Canada.

He is survived by his wife, Marion Pickering, of Sidney; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Madeline Pickering of Jonesborough, Tenn.; John and Ruthann Pickering of Clifton Park; and Ed and Kathy Pickering of Mount Upton; daughters and sons-in-law, Elayne and Bob Merrill of West Senaca, and Kathy and Don Mayes of McLean; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Charles was predeceased by his sisters, Lois Marcy and Mary Tiffany.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 31, 1998, at the C.H. Lander Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David D. Masland of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, officiating.

Graveside service will be held on Friday, July 31, 1998, in Harford Cemetery, Harford, Pa., at 3:30 p.m.

Friends may call Thursday, July 30, 1998, at the funeral home at their convenience, the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. A V.F.W. service will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 1406 Monroe St., Endicott, N.Y., 13760.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Edwin G. Dudley
MERIDIAN — Edwin G. Dudley, 75, of Meridian, died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 26, 1998, at his home.
He was born in Meridian on Dec. 14, 1922, the son of Oakley D. and Elsie (Grandjean) Dudley. He married Marion L. Blakeman on Feb. 1, 1947, in Lysander.

He was a lifelong resident of Meridian, where he worked as a dairy farmer, first with his father and later in partnership with his son. He retired from farming in 1988. In 1962, he founded Dudley Water Service which he continued to operate until his death.

He was a Cayuga County legislator from 1972-76; a lifelong member, trustee and deacon of the Meridian Baptist Church; a charter member of the Clarksboro Hunt Club and former member of the Meridian Fire Department.

He dedicated his life to his family, church and community, and to the conservation of his farm lands and wood lots. His hobbies included trapping, big-game hunting and a lively game of pool. He regularly took hunting trips to the Adirondacks,  Pennsylvania and the Colorado Rockies. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by many.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Kathryn Dudley of Meridian; three daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Michael Gerrety of Baldwinsville; Joan and Jeff Baker of Fair Haven; and Ruth and Brian Wilson of Oneonta.

Also surviving are six grandchildren: Todd, Jennifer and Glen Dudley of Meridian; Holly and David Gerrety of Baldwinsville; and Gerald "Jerry" Wilson of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Robert, in 1977.

A private graveside service will be held Tuesday morning at Meridian Village Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at Meridian Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Keller officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Meridian Baptist Church Memorial Fund, Meridian, N.Y., 13113.

Funeral arrangements are by Greenleaf Funeral Home, Inc., 503 W.Onondaga St., Syracuse, N.Y.
