Margaret Eleanor
(McCleary) Howard
GREENFIELD, Mass. — Margaret Eleanor (McCleary) Howard, 77, of 73 Madison Circle, Greenfield, Mass., died Sunday, July 26, 1998, at Saint Paul's Hospital, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

She was born in Palmyra, Wayne County, the daughter of Boyd and Mabel Jane (Kyle) McCleary on July 15, 1921.

She grew up in Bellaire, Ohio, before moving to Oneonta, and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1939. She then went on and graduated from Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, in 1943. She then went on to Katharine Gibbs, in New York City in 1944.

She married Robert T.B. Howard on Sept. 13, 1947, and lived in Oneonta, for a few years before moving to Commington, Mass. They then moved to Greenfield, Mass., in 1959.

She was employed with IBM World Headquarters in New York before moving to Greenfield. She was a Secretary for Haigis Transportation Company Inc., which was owned by her husband.

While a resident of Greenfield, she was a member of Board of Organized Workers, past president of the Greenfield Garden Club, director and secretary of Greenfield Library Association, past president of the Madison Circle Association and corporator of the Church Street Home. She was a member of Saint James Episcopal Church since 1959.

Her husband died May 10, 1990. Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia (Adams) Howard of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two sons, Stephen T.B. of East Hampton, Long Island, and John S. of Sherman, Conn.; two sisters, Mabel Kane and Ruth McCusker; six grandchildren, three nieces and three nephews.

Funeral services will be observed on Friday at 10 a.m., at Saint James Episcopal Church, Church Street, Greenfield, with the Rev. Hugh Flesher officiating.

Calling hours will be Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m., at Walker Funeral Home, 14 High St., Greenfield.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Greenfield YMCA, Main Street, Greenfield, Mass., 01301.

Pauline M. Cougear
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Pauline M. Cougear, 95, of Cooperstown passed away at The Meadows on Monday, July 27, 1998.

Pauline was born on Sept. 21, 1902, at Arnold's Lake, a daughter of Fred and Grace (Brown) Martindale.

She attended school in Milford.

Mrs. Cougear married Harry Cougear in 1934 whom she divorced in 1944.

Pauline was a housekeeper for many years and lived in the Cooperstown area her entire life.

She is survived by a brother, Fred Martindale and his wife, Virginia, of Milford; eight nieces, Elaine Bliss, Donna Evans, Betty Barber, Diane Sepler, Janice Meade, Jean La Corte, Sharyn Warner and Elva Martindale; nine nephews, Wayne Packer, Fred Packer, David Evans, James Martindale, Ron Martindale, Sam Martindale, Dennis Martindale, David Martindale and Richard Martindale.

She was predeceased by six sisters: Marjorie Packer, Frances Schrull, Ruth Evans, Elizabeth Jorgensen, Lena Jorgensen and Faith Swartout.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Burial will follow in the Milford Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, for those who wish may make donations in her name can send them to the Catskill Area Hospice at 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., 13820, or to The Meadows at R.R. No. 4, Box 400, Cooperstown, N.Y., 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Gertrude Smith
MARGARETVILLE — Gertrude Smith, 95, of Margaretville, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi. She was a resident for 19 years.

She was born on Oct. 7, 1902, in Margaretville, the daughter of George Sanford and Martha Streeter.

She married Earl Smith in 1927, in Arena. He died in 1977.

She was a homemaker. She lived in Delhi for 19 years and formerly lived in Margaretville and Halcottsville.

She was a member of the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville.

She is survived by one son, Virgil Smith and his best friend, Elizabeth Stratton of Margaretville and one granddaughter, Nancy Smith of Hancock.

Funeral services are on Friday, July 31, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.

Burial will be at the Margaretville Cemetery.

Calling hours are Thursday, July 30, 1998, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Helen R. Keil
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Helen R. Keil, 95, passed away Sunday, July 26, 1998, at The Meadows.

She was born Dec. 19, 1902, in Gottingen, Germany, the daughter of Ferdinand and Marie (Brinkmann) Bodmann.

She married Otto Keil in Brooklyn, in April of 1927.

Mrs. Keil was raised and educated in Germany until coming to the United States in 1923.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Springfield Center.

She is survived by a daughter, Helen H. Schollhamer of Cooperstown; and two granddaugthers, Dorothy Schollhamer and Marjory Schollhamer, both of  White Plains.

There will be a graveside funeral service and committal on Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. John Roos officiating. Burial will follow.

Contributions in Mrs. Keil's memory may be made to The Meadows, 140 Co. Hwy. 33 W, Cooperstown, N.Y., 13326.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Anna Brownell
NORTH BLENHEIM — Anna Brownell, 81, of Route 30, North Blenheim, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at the home of her daughter Doris Ackerley in Charlotteville.

She was born March 5, 1917 in  Jefferson the daughter of Burr and Lena (Mackey) Burton.

She married Stewart Brownell on Aug. 11, 1934, in Charlotteville. Stewart died April 23, 1967.

Anna spent most of her life in the  Jefferson, Charlotteville, Gilboa and North Blenheim areas. She worked for many years at Audiosears in Stamford.

She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-laws, Doris and John Ackerley of Charlotteville, Hope and Michael Zeh of Central Bridge, Dawn and Dick Allen of Amsterdam, and Lucy and Francis Loveland of Castleton; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Darlene Brownell of Milford; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Betty Clapper.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 1998, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 West Main St., Stamford with Howard Bindman of the Stamford Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses officiating.

Burial will be in the West  Jefferson Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home at their convenience Thursday afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance between 7 and 9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Anna's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Marcia J. Salisbury
GLENDORA,  Calif. — Marcia James Salisbury, 65, formerly of West Delhi and Castleton, died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital in Glendora,  Calif.

Mrs. Salisbury was born in Delancey and had lived in California for the past 25 years.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, George; their son, Scott and his wife, Ruth; three grandchildren, Melissa, Megan and Evan of Alto Loma,  Calif.; her mother, Evelyn James of West Delhi; a sister, Phyllis Mullineaux of Liverpool; brothers, Winfield of Oneonta and David James of Sidney Center, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 10, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Ray Funeral Home, 59 Seaman Ave., Castleton. Visitation was prior to the funeral at the funeral home.

Interment was at the Horizon View Cemetery in Castleton.

Those who wish may contribute to the American Cancer Society, 1450 Western Ave., Albany, N.Y., 12203.

Eleanor L. Fuller
MEDIA, Pa. — A memorial service for Eleanor L. and Donald E. Fuller. Eleanor L. Fuller passed away on Jan. 2, 1998. The memorial service will be at the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, after the regular Sunday morning worship service on Aug. 2, 1998.

They had been summertime residents of West Lake Road, Canadarago Lake for many years.

After an informal graveside ceremony at 1:30 p.m., Eleanor L. will then be interred in a Fuller family plot in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego. Friends and fellow church members may attend.

Robert H. Elwyn
LAURENS — Robert H. Elwyn, 69, of Laurens, died June 25, 1998. Committal services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 1998, at Laurens Cemetery with the Rev. Harry G. Myer officiating.

Arrangements are through Bokhout Funeral Home of Oneonta and Otego.

June C. Harris
DELHI — June C. Harris, 67, of Delhi died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at Bassett Healthcare, in Cooperstown.

She was born on June 22, 1931, in Big Timber, Mont., the daughter of James H. and Cora (Tiffany) Preston.

She married Thomas D. Harris in September of 1952, in Sidney. He died on July 7, 1991.

June moved from Big Timber to the Oneonta area in 1952. She and her husband, Thomas, owned and operated a dairy farm in Delhi. She was a devoted wife and mother.

June was a member of the Rebekah's and the Lodge of Delhi. She was asked to represent her husband on the Board of Director's for Delaware County Electrical Co-Op.

She is survived by her two sons, William T. Harris of Franklin, and Gregory J. Harris of Worcester; five grandchildren, Dustin, Alison and Jason Harris, Marshall and Dylan Harris and her three brothers and sister, Bill Preston of Eugene, Ore., Mae Kjarmo of Big Timber, Mont., and Harry and Eugene Preston of Richland, Wash. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at 1 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Leigh Holder-Bobo, pastor Hamden Presbyterian Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Treadwell Fire Department and Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Bertha E. Germond
MARGARETVILLE — Bertha E. Germond, 73, of Margaretville died July 29, 1998, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 5, 1924, in Roxbury, the daughter of David B. Chase and Ella P. O'Brien.

She married William Germond on Nov. 6, 1971, at Margaretville. He died Nov. 26, 1987.

She worked as a waitress for area restaurants, the last being Kass Inn, Margaretville.

She was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Margaretville.

She enjoyed needle point and other craft hobbies.

She is survived by two brothers, Robert Chase of Richmondville and Ralph Chase of Margaretville; one sister, Betty Porter of Harrisburg, Pa., also survived by stepchildren, and three nieces and four nephews.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at 11 a.m., at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville with the Rev. Dr. George Carpenter and the Rev. George O. Porter Jr., officiating.

Burial will be at the Laurens Cemetery, Laurens. The committal will be Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at 11 a.m.

Calling hours are Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made in memory of Bertha Germond to the Ambulance Fund of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
