Gladys L. Cates
JEFFERSON — Gladys L. Cates, 96, of Summit St.,  Jefferson died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

She was born Aug. 16, 1901, in Blenheim the daughter of Orben and Bessie (Reed) Loucks.

She married Freeman W. Cates on Sept. 26, 1923, in Windham. Freeman died July 30, 1985.

Gladys attended the one room school house at Burnt Hill in Blenheim. She spent most of her life as a farmer's wife in Schoharie County.

She was a member of the  Jefferson United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women and the quilting club of the church. She was also a member of the  Jefferson Senior Citizens.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Lewis and Frances Cates of Richmondville; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter and a niece and two nephews.

She was predeceased by two sons, Richard and Millard.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford with the Rev. Neil Irwin, pastor of the North Blenheim United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery,  Jefferson.

Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience on Friday afternoon and evening from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Gladys' memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Frances M. Robert
MILFORD — Frances M. Robert, 90, formerly of Milford passed away on Friday, July 31, 1998, at the James G. Johnston Nursing Home in  Johnson City.

Frances was born Dec. 5, 1907, a daughter of Gustave and Anna Maria (Petzold) Brauer in New York City.

Frances was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hartwick Seminary.

She was predeceased by her husband, Aloys Robert; a brother, John Brauer; and sisters, Ann Bishop, Rose Erbsmehl and Ella Brauer.

Frances is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford followed by burial in the Milford Cemetery.

Her family would like to acknowledge the nurses and staff of the Hilltop Retirement Community for the kind and compassionate care that was extended to Frances during her time there; they are truly grateful for your dedication.

In memory of Frances and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Hilltop Retirement Community at 286 Deyo Hill Rd.,  Johnson City, N.Y. 13790, would be appreciated.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Pauline (Decker) VanDermark

TREADWELL — A memorial service for the late Pauline (Decker) VanDermark, 78, of Edgewater, Fla., and Unadilla will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at 1 p.m. at the Treadwell Methodist Church, Treadwell, with the Rev. Lyle Linder, officiating.

Committal services will be held immediately afterwards at the Pinegrove Cemetery, Meridale, for Mrs. VanDermark, who died on July 10, 1998, in New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

Frances M. Robert

Alberta E. Bouboulis
COBLESKILL — Alberta E. Bouboulis, 76, of Cobleskill died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at her son's residence in Goodyear Lake.

She was born Jan. 17, 1922, in Kingston, Pa.

She married Thomas E. Bouboulis on Nov. 23, 1944, in Oneonta. He predeceased her in 1994.

Mrs. Bouboulis has lived in Cobleskill since 1950.

She was a first-grade teacher at Cobleskill Central School for 25 years. Then she worked at BOCES in Schoharie for 10 years. Most recently she worked for Stepping Stone Day Care and Little Tyke Bear Day Care.

Mrs. Bouboulis was a member of the Cobleskill United Methodist Church where she taught adult Sunday school and was also a member of the Summit Grange.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, George E. and Gloria Bouboulis of Goodyear Lake; three grandchildren, Leah and her husband Donald Elwood of Goodyear Lake, Nicholas Bouboulis of Goodyear Lake and Eve Bouboulis of Cherry Valley; three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

At Mrs. Bouboulis' request, her body was donated to the Anatomical Gift Program at the Albany Medical Center. There will be no calling hours and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Bouboulis to the United Methodist Church, 6 Chapel St., Cobleskill.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Elvira (Vera) Puhm Ritz
FRANKLIN — Elvira (Vera) Puhm Ritz, 71, of Franklin died on Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, where she had been a resident since November 1997.

She was born on Oct. 30, 1926, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Franz and Lilly (Ufken) Schmiedecke.

She married Joseph Puhm in 1947. He died in 1973. She then married Donald M. Ritz on June 16, 1971, in Franklin.

Vera was a housewife most of her life and became well known for her art work. She was a member of the Community Bible Church of Franklin.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Lilly and Robert Mueller of Yucaipa,  Calif.; her husband of 25 years, Donald M. Ritz of Franklin; a daughter and her husband, Rose and James Cleaveland of Franklin; a son, Joseph Puhm of Riverside,  Calif.; her stepchildren and their spouses, Jack and Marjorie Ritz of Franklin, Deborah and Tarry Brienza of Hartwick; a brother and his wife, Frank and Jill Schmiedecke of Prescott, Ariz. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Walter Schlundt, pastor of The Community Bible Church, officiating, and the Rev. Andrea  White, pastor of the Aldrich Baptist Church, assisting.

Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad and Franklin Fire Department.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home.

Paul A. Miller Sr.
MOUNT UPTON — Mr. Paul A. Miller Sr., 63, of Mount Upton, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born March 29, 1935, in Coventry, the son of Harold and Stella (Silvey) Miller Sr.

He married Mary Olmstead on Oct. 3, 1964, in Oneonta.

Paul was retired from Bendix having worked as a degreaser and also on the assembly.

He was a member of the Sidney Union. Paul enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Miller of Mount Upton; his mother, Stella Miller of Oneonta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Ann and Terry Connolly of Wingdale, and Tina Marie and Alan Lockwood of Sidney; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert P. and Lori Benjamin Jr. of Alabama, Paul A. Miller Jr. of Masonville and Scott V. Miller of Gilbertsville; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Etta Mae Bates of Laurens, Dorothy Middaugh of Morris, Midge Flannagan of Rome and Marian and Fred Lambert of Florida; two granddaughters, Lindsay Benjamin of Alabama and Melyssa Lockwood of Sidney; five grandsons, Sean Benjamin of Alabama, Rex Jordan Jr. of Wingdale, Randy Jordan of Wingdale, Alan Jordan of Wingdale and Michael Lockwood of Sidney as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Paul was predeceased by his father, Harold Miller Sr., one brother, Harold Miller Jr., and one daughter, Esther Jane Miller.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

The Rev. Harold Lefler, pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church of Sidney, will officiate.

Burial will be in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, this evening, Aug. 5, 1998, from 7-9 p.m. for those who wish to call.

Mary Branigan
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mary Branigan, 92, of R.R. 3, died on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born on July 10, 1906, in Richfield Springs, a daughter of the late James M. and Mary McNaboe Filburn.

A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, she graduated from Richfield Springs High School and the Utica School of Commerce.

On July 9, 1934, she married Joseph Branigan in Richfield Springs. A loving union of 49 years until his passing in 1963.

Mary had first worked as a telephone operator for the New York Telephone Company and later for the Richfield Springs Central School district, retiring in 1966. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs and the Richfield Springs Senior Citizens where she received "Honorary Lifetime Member."

Surviving are her two sons and their wives, Joseph and Margaret Branigan of Delhi and Martin and Glenice Branigan of Richfield Springs; two daughters, Rosemary Branigan of Albany, and Barbara and her husband William Armstrong of Newfield; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo and Lucius Filburn, and a sister, Edna Sitek.

Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St Joseph's Church at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Francis Husselbeck, pastor, and the Rev. Edward J. Ryan, officiating.

Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 5-8 p.m.

Memorial donatins may be made to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Rescue Squad or St. Joseph's Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Giles L. Adams
DELHI — Giles L. Adams, 87, died Aug. 4, 1998, at the Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

He was born April 28, 1911, in Clarks Summit, Pa., the son of Hendrick and Edna Ferris Adams.

He married Freda Shields on Nov. 12, 1932, in Walton, who survives.

He spent most of his life in the Walton area and operated Adams Dairy until 1970.

He was a past master of the Walton Lodge 559, F & AM and recipient of a distinguished service award and also a high priest in Royal Arch Masons.

He is survived by his wife, Freda of Walton; two sons, Robert of Atlanta and David of Walton; two daughters, Joan McRurney of Pittsburgh and Rujth Sadecki of Walton; a brother, William Adams of Abingdon, Va.; three sisters, Juanita Gifford of Walton, Eunice Fitzgerald of Sidney and Luceda Thef of Seattle, Wash., as well as 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 8 at 11 a.m. at the Walton United Presbyterian Church with Pastor Joe Bokel, officiating. Masonic services will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 at the funeral home.

Calling hours will be Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the Clark and Winter Funeral Home, Walton.
