Adam S. Yerdon
CHERRY VALLEY — Adam S. Yerdon, 16, passed away Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, the result of an accident.

He was born Aug. 31, 1981, in Cobleskill, the son of Ricky and Shirley (Lockwood) Yerdon.

Adam was a member of the Cherry Valley-Springfield class of 1999. He was a member of the CV-S varsity basketball team, varsity club, Junior Honor Society, the Royal Rangers in Cherry Valley (part of the Cherry Valley youth group) and the Assembly of God Church, Cherry Valley.

Adam is survived by his parents; two sisters, Annette and Alisha Yerdon of Cherry Valley; grandparents, Adelbert Lockwood of Cobleskill, Raymond and Marion Yerdon of Cherry Valley; several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

He was predeceased by a grandmother, Mildred Lockwood.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 7 at the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley with Pastor Rick Yerdon, Adam's father, officiating, and Pastor Ray Richards of the Cobleskill Assembly of God Church, assisting. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery.

Calling hours will be observed from 7-9 p.m. today, Aug. 6 at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Adam's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Assembly of God Church, P.O. Box 524, Cherry Valley, N.Y. 13320.

"God's gain is our loss. Thank you for 16 great years, son."

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Elvira (Vera) Puhm Ritz

FRANKLIN — Elvira (Vera) Puhm Ritz, 71, of Franklin died on Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, where she had been a resident since November 1997.

She was born on Oct. 30, 1926, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Franz and Lilly (Ufken) Schmiedecke.

She married Joseph Puhm in 1947. He died in 1971. She then married Donald M. Ritz on June 16, 1973, in Franklin.

Vera was a housewife most of her life and became well known for her art work. She was a member of the Community Bible Church of Franklin.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Lilly and Robert Mueller of Yucaipa,  Calif.; her husband of 25 years, Donald M. Ritz of Franklin; a daughter and her husband, Rose and James Cleaveland of Franklin; a son, Joseph Puhm of Riverside,  Calif.; her stepchildren and their spouses, Jack and Marjorie Ritz of Franklin, Deborah and Tarry Brienza of Hartwick; a brother and his wife, Frank and Jill Schmiedecke of Prescott, Ariz. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held today, Aug. 6, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Walter Schlundt, pastor of The Community Bible Church, officiating, and the Rev. Andrea  White, pastor of the Aldrich Baptist Church, assisting.

Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad and Franklin Fire Department.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home.

Donald J. Conine
DELHI — Donald J. Conine, 76, of Delhi, died early Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at his home.
He was born April 7, 1922, at Roses Brook, South Kortright, the son of Jay B. and Florence E. (Stahl) Conine.

A 1939 graduate of Andes High School, he later received a degree in agricultural sciences from Delhi College.

A World War II veteran, Don served for four years in the U.S. Army. He married Barbara A. Holden on Aug. 17, 1968. She died July 7, 1987. He later married Margaret R. "Peggy" (Yost) Ackerley on May 8, 1996.

A lifelong Delaware County resident and entrepreneuer, in early life he was an artificial inseminator with NYABC for 16 years and later owned and operated the Galla-Curci Theater in Margaretville where he was a longtime resident. He moved to Delhi in 1968 where he was owner/operator of Delhi Sanitation Company for five years and subsequently employed by Delhi Motor Company for 13 years, retiring as parts manager in 1987.

Remaining active after his retirement, for the past 10 years Don has worked with the College Association at Delhi on the grounds maintenance staff until his health declined earlier this year.

He was an active member of the United Ministry of Delhi; Donald W. Gleason Post 190 American Legion serving on the honor guard and was a past Noble Grand of Delhi Odd Fellows Lodge No. 625.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Conine at home; a daughter, Linda Scefcyk of East Brunswick, N.J.; two sons and their wives, D. James and Robin Conine of Freehold, N.J., and Kevin A. and Betty Conine of Treadwell; four stepchildren, Robert and Thomas Aitken, Vicki Marshall and Barbara Scherer; 15 grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Edna Conine of Andes and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to call today at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi where Odd Fellows services will be held at 6:45 p.m. after which the family will be in attendance until 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at the United Ministry of Delhi by the Rev. Mark H. Chatterton, pastor, and military honors will be accorded by the Gleason American Legion post. Private burial will be later in the family plot at Andes Cemetery.

Contributions in Don's memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and/or the Gleason American Legion post, Delhi.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Willis A. Frazier
WALTON — Willis A. Frazier, 89, of 27 Stockton Ave., Walton, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton.

He was born Nov. 28, 1908, in Rock Rift, the son of Brinton and Grace (Burkett) Frazier.

He married Virginia Davidson on Dec. 21, 1938, who predeceased him. He then married Gladys Dakin on June 30, 1968, in Poughkeepsie.

He was a retired machinist from Bendix Corp., Sidney.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Walton, and the Franklin United Methodist Church. He was former owner of Frazier's Express in Walton and was past president of Ouleout Historical Society in Franklin.

He is predeceased by a daughter, Betty Walker; a stepson, Howard Cronk; a sister, Frances Hector, and a brother, Norman Frazier.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Frazier of Walton; four daughters, Virginia Ann (John) Hedberg of Wilmington, Del., Melanie Sue (Ronald) Foeller of Duanesburg, Lucinda Jo (Donald) Clayton of Unadilla and Leilani Diane Vanier of Schenectady; four step-children, Douglas R. (Priscilla) Cronk of Arcade, John G. (Kathryn) Cronk of Franklin, Frances C. (Lyndon) Robinson of Walton and Judith Cronk of Walton; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie (Vernon) Blossom, formerly of Walton, and Marjorie Muller of Endicott as well as several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be Sunday, Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Franklin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor of the Franklin United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Contributions can be made to the Franklin United Methodist Church or the United Methodist Church of Walton.

Arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. of Walton.

Lowell Strait
SPRING HILL, Fla. — Lowell "Punky" K. Strait, 75, of Spring Hill, Fla., died July 31 in Spring Hill.

He was born in Oneonta on Nov. 25, 1922, and lived in Oneonta until 1941. He moved to Long Island in 1942 and lived there until 1993 when he retired to Spring Hill, Fla.

Mr. Strait, a veteran of the Army Air Force, served in World War II and the Korean War, receiving numerous medals in both. He retired from Bethpage school district and is survived by his wife Marian "Main" Strait; his sons, James of Fort Lauderdale and Chris of Dade City, Fla.; daughters, Barbara of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Carol of Clearwater, Fla., and a brother Bernie of New York. He had nine grandchildren.

Willard L. Lewis Jr.
NEW BERLIN — Willard L. Lewis Jr., 75, of New Berlin, died Aug. 5, 1998, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, following an extended illness

Born Sept. 14, 1922, in Connellsville, Pa., he was the son of Willard L. Lewis Sr. and Edith Gnilka Lewis.

He married Betty Lee Dixon on July 10, 1943, who survives. The Lewises have resided in New Berlin for nearly 50 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Willard L. Lewis III, and daughter-in-law, Mary of Forest City, N.C., and his daughter, Susan Lewis Franco and son-in-law, John Franco of Oxford; grandchildren, Drew Lewis of Portland, Maine, and Matthew and Scott Franco of Oxford. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Lewis Feenick of Berlin, Md., and several nieces and nephews.

Willard or "Sharpy" served in the Eighth Army Air Corps during World War II. He was employed by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. and retired following 33 years of service. He then began his second career as a substitute teacher for the Unadilla Valley School System. School for him was a labor of love lasting 14 years. He was also active in various civic activities including Rotary Club, athletics and the United Methodist Church. He will be remembered for the many Minstrel and Variety Shows he directed.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at the United Methodist Church in New Berlin at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at a reception in the church hall.

Memorial donations may be made to the United Methodist Church of New Berlin, Dollars for Scholars at Unadilla Valley High School or a charity of your choice.

Bertha J. Hooks
FT. MYERS, Fla. — Mrs. Bertha J. Hooks, 89, of Ft. Myers, Fla., and formerly of Oneonta, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 4, 1998, at Shady Rest, Ft. Myers, Fla.

She was born Nov. 30, 1908, in Hastings on the Hudson, the daughter of Stephen and Katherine (Farkas) Jungle.

She married Kenneth Hooks on Aug. 10, 1935, at the First Methodist Church of Oneonta. Mr. Hooks died Feb. 17, 1977.

Bertha spent her early years in Hastings. She then moved to Schenectady and attended the Albany National Nursing School. In 1929, Bertha moved to Oneonta and was a nurse at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital for 10 years. Mrs. Hooks husband, Kenneth, was the Oneonta Fire Chief from 1960-1973.

Bertha was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Oneonta, and was a member of the Martha Circle at the church.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Brian (Marilyn) Sabean of Ft. Myers, Fla.; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Wayne Hooks of Es Condido,  Calif., Donald and Betty Hooks of Voorheesville and Richard Hooks of Maryland; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth Wayto of Schenectady, Mrs. Joseph (Rose) Markus of Schenectady, Mrs. Carl (Grace) Joslyn of Seneca Falls and Mrs. Edward (Viola) Hafferty of East Hartford, Conn.; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Bertha was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Bishop and Catherine DeMars.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Oneonta.

The Rev. Marsha Irmer, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

The family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 for those who wish to call.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Mary H. Ackley
FRANKLIN — Mary H. Ackley, 85, of Franklin died on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born on July 12, 1913, in South Kortright, the daughter of George and Mabel (Egnor) Van Alstine.

She married Lynn A. Ackley on Jan. 11, 1935, in Franklin.

Mrs. Ackley was a lifelong area resident and was a member of the Franklin Community Bible Church, where she was active in its women's federation. She was also a former member of the Franklin Eastern Star. A devoted farm wife, mother and grandmother, she was well known for her apple pies, which she baked for her family, friends and her church.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Lynn A. Ackley of Franklin; two sons and their wives, Robert and Claudine Ackley of South New Berlin, and Roger and Frances Ackley of Franklin; four grandchildren and their spouses, Douglas and Connie Ackley and James Ackley of South New Berlin, William Ackley of Morrisville and Peter and Kelly Ackley of Franklin; her eight grandchildren; a sister, Agnes Kitz of Racine, Wis., and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Van Alstine of Delhi. Mrs. Ackley is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at 1 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Walter Schlundt, pastor of the Franklin Community Bible Church, officiating, and the Rev. Andrea  White, pastor of the Aldrich Baptist Church, assisting.

Burial will follow in the Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

Friends may call from noon to service time at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.
