Emma C. Wollenhaupt
CHERRY VALLEY — Miss Emma C. Wollenhaupt, 91, passed away Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born Dec. 26, 1906, in Watertown, Conn., the daughter of William and Julia (Dolfini) Wollenhaupt.

Emma attended Russell Sage College and North Adam State Normal School and received a master's degree from New Paltz.

She taught school for 11 years at the Taft School, Watertown, Conn., three years in the Newburgh School District, 15 years in the Middletown School District and five years at Cherry Valley. She especially enjoyed teaching state history and history of Native Americans.

She was a member of the New York State Grange, Otsego County Retired Teachers, Cherry Valley Historical Association, Grace Episcopal Church of Cherry Valley and served as president of the Cherry Valley Memorial Library of Trustees for many years.

Emma enjoyed helping youth, several young people called her grandma. She was a Girl Scout and 4-H Club leader, she formed a tee-nage club in Newburgh and helped children get started in stamp collecting in Cherry Valley.

She is survived by several cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley with the Rev. Alvin Burnworth, pastor of the Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley, officiating.

Calling hours will be from 2 p.m. until time of service on Monday at the funeral home.

Burial will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at the Hillside Cemetery in Middletown.

Contributions in Emma's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Memorial Library or the Cherry Valley Historical Association.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Zella Whiting Barley
ONEONTA — Mrs. Zella Whiting Barley, 82, of Oneonta, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.

She was born May 31, 1916, in Coventry, the daughter of Archie and Alice (Tarbox) Whiting.

Zella was a lifelong area resident and had been self-employed for many years as a photo retoucher. She was a graduate of Morris Central School, Morris.

Zella enjoyed as a pastime painting scenery and was an avid painter.

She attended the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Judy Barley of Earlville; one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Brian Horey of New Berling; six grandchildren, Jason, Carol and Marissa Horey, all of New Berlin, and Richard, Donna and Barbara Barley, all of Earlville; and is also survived by four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Zenno "Zeke" Whiting, Milo "Mike" Whiting and Kenneth Whiting, and a sister, Inza Cornell.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, from Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta with the Rev. Joseph Fiske, retired Methodist minister of Morris, officiating.

Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta on Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998, from 7-9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the American Lung Association of Mid New York, 1249 Front St., Suite 105, Binghamton, N.Y. 13905.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Edwin W. Cowen
SIDNEY — Edwin W. Cowen, 78, of Sidney, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at his home.

He was born May 19, 1920, to the late Edward and Gennie Rowlands Cowen in Chicago, Ill.

Ed married Marie Petrowsky Aug. 14, 1943, in Chicago, Ill.

He served in the United States Army in the 101st Airborne as a paratrooper during World War II.

Ed retired from the marketing department at E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Sidney; a member of the Lodge of the Elks No. 2175, Sidney and the Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post No. 183 of Sidney.

Ed was predeceased by his wife Marie on Aug. 20, 1990.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Kerry and Nancy Cowen of Dublin, Ohio and Brian and Betty Cowen of Wanaque, N.J.; one daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Gerry Gorecki of Clinton, Conn.; one sister, Jean Juske of Chicago, Ill.; his mother-in-law, Rose Petrowsky of Chicago, Ill.; as well as nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998, at the Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Gordon Polenz, officiating.

Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributins may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Kurt J. Elbling
SCHENEVUS — Kurt J. Elbling, 65, of Schenevus died Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998 at his residence after a lengthy illness.

He was born July 5, 1933 in Queens, the son of the late Julius and Rosa (Frankl) Elbling.

He married Margaret K. Gavares 25 years ago.

Mr. Elbling was a lifelong area resident of Ridgewood, Queens. He moved to Schenevus in 1993.

He was a graduate of St. John's University and worked for 30 years for the New York City Human Resources Administration, retiring in 1991.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret K. Elbling of Schenevus; a daughter, Angela Milone of Queens and several cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Schenevus, with the Rev. William Crandall as celebrant.

Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch, St., Schenevus.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Mr. Elbling to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 272, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Nellie A. Williams
STAMFORD — Nellie A. Williams, 72, of Robinson Terrace, Stamford died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital at Oneonta.

She was born Sept. 30, 1925 at West Winfield, the daughter of Lynn and Henrietta (Knowles) Osborne.

Nellie was married to Evan R. Williams on Aug. 25, 1946.

She moved to Stamford in 1989 from Port St. Joe, Fla., and became a resident of Robinson Terrace on Oct. 6, 1992.

Nellie was a member of the Stamford Baptist Church. She was an avid trivia player and a member of the weekly Bible study at her residence. She was a former member and past president of the Resident Council at Robinson Terrace.

Nellie is survived by her husband, Evan Williams of Robinson Terrace; four daughters and son-in-law, Gail and Robert Prichard of Stamford, Donna Williams and Dawn Butler of Lynn Haven, Fla., and Cindy Kosier of Port St. Joe, Fla., nine grandchildren, Rick, Wendy, Melissa, Paula, Michael, Jamie, Joe, Chris and Russ; four great-grandchildren, Anthony, Patience, Molly Beth and Jordan Thomas; a sister, Shirley Post of Edmeston and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 19 at the Stamford Baptist Church, Stamford, with the Rev. Waylen Bray, pastor, officiating.

The burial will be held at the convenience of the family on Thursday at the Edmeston Cemetery at Edmeston.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford at their convenience on Tuesday afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Nellie's memory to the Stamford Baptist Church, Lake Street, Stamford, N.Y. 12167.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Edith Witham
ONEONTA — Edith Witham passed away Aug. 14, 1998 at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born March 13, 1911 in the town of Oneonta, the daughter of Daniel and Jessie Baker.

She was first married to Oliver Hall, Oct. 16, 1944. He passed away Jan. 23, 1980. She then married Clayton Witham on July 21, 1984. He passed away Oct. 24, 1995.

Edith was a 1932 graduate of Hartwick College. She earned a master's of science degree from the State University College at Oneonta in 1962. She taught school in Newcomb and New Berlin Central School for 15 years.

She was lifelong member of the West Oneonta Baptist Church.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Arthur, Ralph and Robert; and a sister, Alice Studwell.

She is survived by one stepson, Fred Hall and his wife, Lillian; one stepdaughter, Doris and husband, Charles Brooks of Norwich; six grandchildren, Pamela Winchester, Donna Decker, Fred Hall Jr., Penny Timer Wendy Cleaveland and Linda Wenston; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, Phyllis Carvin Lull and nephews.

Pauline M. Cougear
COOPERSTOWN — A memorial service for Mrs. Pauline M. Cougear, 95, who passed away on July 27, 1998 will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998 at 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Eileen Kellogg of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Mrs. George (Gerda) Helmke
WORCESTER — A memorial service in loving memory of Mrs. George (Gerda) Helmke will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998 at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church on Main Street, Worcester. She passed away in June 1998 in Decatur, Ga. A reception will follow.

Leona M. Enright
ONEONTA — Leona M. Enright, 90, of 60 Ford Ave., Oneonta passed away Monday, Aug. 17, 1998 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born June 19, 1908, in Maybrook, the dauther of Charles A. and Charlotte (Edwards) Krom.

She married Elmer V. (Mike) Enright on Jan. 28, 1931, in St. Joseph's Rectory, Middletown. Mr. Enright died June 30, 1969.

A homemaker most of her life, she worked during World War II at the Middletown Knitting Mill, and with her late husband operated "Enright's Inn," during the early 1950's in Middletown. They also opened their home to a number of elderly borders throughout the years.

Leona was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, interested in cooking, entertaining, reading, growing house plants, and known for her willingness to help others.

Retiring she moved to Saugerties in 1971, and then to Oneonta where she made her home for the past 26 years.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Middletown and St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta.

On June 19th she was the guest of honor at a party held to celebrate her 90th birthday, with over 40 guests attending. The next evening, escorted by her two grandsons, she carried on an Irish linen pillow the wedding bands of her granddaughter and grandson-in-law.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Ann Enright of Oneonta; three grandchildren, Michael of Oneonta, Sean of Dallas,  Texas, and Elizabeth Enright Twomey and husband, Michael of Albany; a nephew, Menzo Brown and his wife, Anne of Whitney Point; as well as several great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, D. Vincent Enright, a brother, Van Roy Krom, and a sister, Esther Mae Brown.

Leona will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris. There will be no calling hours. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed in Leona's memory to the charity of one's choice.
