John `Jack' Grimes
DATAW ISLAND, S.C. — John "Jack" Grimes, 66, of Dataw Island, S.C. died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital, S.C.

Mr. Grimes was born May 12, 1932, in Brooklyn, son of James and Clara Anderson Grimes.

Graduating with a B.S. from Oswego College and a M.S. from Hofstra University, Jack retired as an administrator in secondary and adult continuing education.

He served as adjunct professor at New York University, C.W. Post Unversity, and City University of New York.

Jack founded and directed the Lewis A. Wilson Tech Centers in the New York area. He founded the New York State VICA Assoc., a leadership organization for students enrolled in trade and technical high schools and colleges.

He has served as consultant to the New York state Department of Education and directed the "Staff Professional Development Project" for NYSED.

Executive Secretary of the New York State Vocational Industrial Organizations in the City University of New York.

President of Vocational Industrial Coordinators Assoc. Executive Secretary of Long Island Association of Vocational Education Administration. President of the NYSA of Vocational Industrial Organizers. Supervisor of the Teacher Education Program in Metro New York City and Long Island.

In Cooperstown, he owned and operated the Inn at Brook Willow Farm and the Gazebo Antique and Gift Shop, was a trustee of the Pathfinder Village, a member of NYSIIA, the Rotary Club and Glimmerglass Opera Guild.

He continued to remain active in education and became Director of the Fingerlakes OCC and Continuing Education Program and Career Resource Center of the Fingerlakes. He was Director of Employment and Training for Otsego County.

Jack was the first to be awarded the "National VICA Award" for outstanding services in pioneering the development of VICA and the "Sidney Platt Medallion of Honor Award," the highest award for outstanding service presented by the Association of Administrators of New York.

Surviving are his wife, Joan A. Grimes of Dataw Island, S.C.; two sons, Curt Grimes of Durango, Co., and Gary Grimes of Middlebury, Vt.; a daughter, Lynn Grimes of Venice, Fla.; two stepsons, Kenneth Willsey of Grand Prairies,  Texas and Ronald Willsey of Nakomis, Fla; a stepdaughter, Debra Willsey Courtney of Albany; a brother, Robert Grimes of Englewood, Fla., a sister, Vera McCaffrey of Amityville, and 10 grandchildren.

A "celebration of life" service will be held at 3 p.m., Aug. 27, 1998 at Christ Church, Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to, New York State Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, Inc., Attention: Jack Grimes Leadership Award, P.O. Box 191, Old Forge, N.Y. 13420.

Claude Stephens
EDMESTON — Claude Stephens, 84, of Edmeston and formerly of West Laurens died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born Sept. 2, 1913 in West Edmeston, the son of Irwin and Edna Mae (Rose) Stephens.

He was a graduate of Edmeston Central School, Class of 1932.

He married Jennie Simmons July 20, 1935 in Edmeston. She died Jan. 9, 1991.

He had been employed by Reinhardt Heating Company of West Oneonta for many years and had formerly worked for Linn Couch.

Claude was of the Baptist faith. He was a charter member and former chief of the West Laurens Fire Dept., member of the West Laurens Grange, member of the Otsego county Fire Advisory Board for many years, a member of the Firemens Assn. of the state of New York and had served on its Legislative committee for many years. He was a former captain of the fire police of the West Laurens Fire Dept. and was a member of the Otsego County Fire Polic Assn. and the Otsego County Firemens Assn.

He is survived by two sons, Robert Stephens of Edmeston and Gary Stephens of Bear Creek, N.C.; two daughters, Avis Waite of Edmeston and Sharon Ann Wikoff of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister, Leta Camp of Pittsfield; 16 granchildren and several great- and great-great-grandchildren and also several cousins.

Private burial and committal services will be held at the convenience of the family in Edmeston Union Cemetery.

An Otsego County Firemans Me"morial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998 at 3 p.m. at the West Laurens Fire Department in West Laurens with the county fire Chaplin officiating.

The public is welcome to attend. There will be no calling hours and it is requested that friends who wish are asked to donate to either the Edmeston Emergency Squad, or the West Laurens Fire Dept. or the Otsego County Fair Assn. in Claude's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home of Edmeston.

William Guiney Sr.
MT. LEBANON, Pa. — William B. Guiney Sr., 79, of Mt. Lebanon, Pa. died on Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998.

He was born on Aug. 2, 1919 in Parkesburg, Pa., a son of Martin and Mabel (Grigg) Guiney.

He married Gertrude Louise Brady on June 15, 1947 in Brockton, Mass.

Mr. Guiney served as a civilian air transport piolt during World War II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. Following the war he resumed his career as a commercial airline pilot, and while based in Lima, Peru, his first son, William, was born. He retired in 1979 from the United States Air following 30 years of service.

Mr. Guiney was a 32nd degree Mason and, as an avid sportsman, he especially enjoyed hunting in  Pennsylvania and New York and fishing in Ontario, Canada.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gertrude Brady Guiney of Mt. Levanon, Pa.; two sons, Dr. William B. Guiney Jr. and his wife, Dr. Katherine W. Lloyd of Cooperstown, and Daniel M. Guiney and his wife, Kay of Visalia,  Calif.; a daughter, Sharon Louise Slavick and her husband, Frank of Redmond, Wash.; a brother, R. Paul Guiney; two sisters, Ruth Hayes and Virginia Ford; two sisters-in-law, Mary and Mildred Guiney; seven grandchil"dren, Kevin, Laura, Evan and Allan Guiney, and David, Jennifer and Paul Slavick and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Thomas Guiney.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, Aug. 21, 1998 at the St. Agnes Chapel of Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown with the Very Rev. Douglas C. Smith, Rector, officiating.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Syria Temple, 1877 Shriner Way, Cheswick, Pa. 15024 or to the Tribute Fund at Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Margaret Elkan
FLY CREEK — Margaret Elkan, 94, of Fly Creek Valley, died Monday afternoon, Aug. 17, 1998 at her home.

Margaret was born on May 10, 1904, the fifth of six children, to Otto and Marianne (Koenitzer) Hirschfeld in Frankfurt, Germany.

She was married to Walter B. Elkan in January of 1943. Walter died on July 26, 1957.

Margaret studied horticulture, as well as X-ray and clinical laboratory science. She also attended Dr. Hoch's Conservatory in Frankfurt, studying violin. She came to the United States in 1938 and for 20 years assisted Dr. Theodore Peters Sr., at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Margaret was a member of the German Reform Church.

She is survived by a son, Paul W. Elkan of Cooperstown; two step-sons, John B. Elkan of Cobleskill and Alfred Elkan of Manhattan; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Mile Braach and a brother, Oskar Hirschfeld, both of Frankfurt, Germany and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering and service at noon on Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998 at Margaret's home in Fly Creek Valley, with the Rev. Eileen Kellogg, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Fly Creek, officiating.

Margaret's remains will be interred beside her husband in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Frank W. Oldick
FORT PLAIN — Mr. Frank W. Oldick, 62, of state Highway 163 died Monday evening, Aug. 17, 1998 at the Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown after a short illness.

He was born on March 16, 1936 in Little Falls the son of John Oldick and Elva Dillenbeck.

Mr. Oldick graduated from Fort Plain High School, Class of 1956.

Mr. Oldick had been a custodian and bus driver for Fort Plain Central School from 1962 until he retired in 1994. Mr. Oldick continued as a substitute bus driver for Fort Plain Central School District at the time of his death. He also drove summer tour buses in the Cooperstown area.

He was a lifelong resident of Fort Plain.

Mr. Oldick was a veteran, serving in the United States Army.

He was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, Freysbush.

Mr. Oldick was an avid hat collector and golfer.

He was predeceased by a brother, John Oldick, who died Aug. 21, 1997.

He is survived by a sister, Doris Jean Yerina of Little Falls; several nieces and nephews and cousins and also several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, 1998 at Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.

Burial will be in the Freysbush Cemetery.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the South Minden Volunteer Fire Department, RD 3 Box 224, Fort Plain, N.Y. 13339 or the Fort Plain Teachers Scholarship Fund, care of Fort Plain High School, Fort Plain, N.Y. 13339.

Virginia Buck
UNADILLA — Virginia L. Buck, 74, passed away Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998 at her home.

Virginia was born Jan. 14, 1924 in Owego, the daughter of Ernest and Bertha (Morgan) Birch.

Virginia worked as a sales representative for the Womens Club Publishing Company, Chicago, Ill.

She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, Sidney.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Christine Buck; grandchildren, Gary Buck, Karen and John Chickerell all of Unadilla, Jennifer Buck and Rich Bennett of Oneonta.

Funeral services for Virginia will be held on Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998 at 1 p.m. from the MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig St., Newark Valley with the Rev. Harold Lefler Jr., pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

William H. Ahrens
MILLBROOK — William H. Ahrens, formerly of Millbrook and Oneonta died Aug. 17, 1998.

Mr. Ahrens was a member of the 240th Military Police stationed at the home of the late President Roosevelt in Hyde Park, and played baseball in Bristol, Tenn., Ft. Niagara, Hyde Park and Millbrook.

Beloved husband of the late Edythe (nee Flanagan).

He is survived by sister, Whilma (late Milford) Kleis, brother Robert (Jayne) Ahrens; sisters-in-law, Doris (late Will"iam) Haan and Jane (late Frederick) Flanagan; sister-in-law, Marian Ahrens; two nieces; eight nephews and dear friend Ruth Levis.

He was predeceased by his brother, Buzz Ahrens.

He was the uncle of the late David Ahrens and Peter Strezcynski.

Private funeral services will be held in Millbrook. No prior visitation.

Wendell T. Stark
DELHI — Mr. Wendell T. Stark, 94, of Delhi and formerly of North Franklin died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, at the Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

He was born Sept. 1, 1903, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of Casper and Lucia (Bristol) Stark.

He married the former Hazel Walling on Dec. 17, 1932, in Montrose, Pa., who survives him. Mr. and Mrs. Stark both resided at the Countryside Care Center and she was present when he passed away.

Wendell had been a member of Oneonta Company G for four years and was honorably discharged from the National Guard in 1929.

He was a master mechanic and machinist for the D. and H. Railroad in Oneonta for 29 years. Wendell had also worked in the Roundhouse and enjoyed trains throughtout his lifetime. He had also worked for Scintilla in Sidney for 10 years in the experimental labs and tool design as well as having worked as an electrical contractor on his own prior to retirement. He enjoyed gardening and singing.

Wendell was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta and was the oldest living member of the former Fraternal Order of Eagles of Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Hazel Walling Stark of the Countryside Care Center, Delhi; one son and daughter-in-law, Darel W. and Diane Stark of Oneonta; three daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Daniel Lewis of Harpursville, Joan and James Klukkert of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Carel and Melvin La Vier of Memphis, Tenn.; one sister, Mrs. Marcella Mangan of Binghamton; one brother-in-law, Raymond Walling of Oneonta; 10 grandchildren, Julie and Eric Stark, Denise Lewis Skovsinde, Dennis, Douglas and Tracy Lewis, Mark and Andrew Klukkert, Andrea Hamilton and Chris La Vier. Also survived by 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta officiating.

Mr. Stark will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris and his cremains will be interred at the Milford Center Cemetery, Milford Center, at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening, Aug. 20, 1998, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the Countryside Care Center, Route 10, Delhi, N.Y. 13753 in memory of Mr. Wendell T. Stark.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
