William Guiney Sr.
MT. LEBANON, Pa. — William B. Guiney Sr., 79, of Mt. Lebanon, Pa. died on Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998.

He was born on Aug. 2, 1919, in Parkesburg, Pa., a son of Martin and Mabel (Grigg) Guiney.

He married Gertrude Louise Brady on June 15, 1947, in Brockton, Mass.

Mr. Guiney served as a civilian air transport pilot during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Following the war he resumed his career as a commercial airline pilot, and while based in Lima, Peru, his first son, William, was born. He retired in 1979 from the U.S. Air Force following 30 years of service.

Mr. Guiney was a 32nd degree Mason and, as an avid sportsman, he especially enjoyed hunting in  Pennsylvania and New York and fishing in Ontario, Canada.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Gertrude Brady Guiney of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.; two sons, Dr. William B. Guiney Jr. and his wife, Dr. Katharine W. Lloyd of Cooperstown, and Daniel M. Guiney and his wife, Kay of Visalia,  Calif.; a daughter, Sharon Louise Slavick and her husband, Frank of Redmond, Wash.; a brother, R. Paul Guiney; two sisters, Ruth Hayes and Virginia Ford; two sisters-in-law, Mary and Mildred Guiney; seven grandchildren, Kevin, Laura, Evan and Allan Guiney, and David, Jennifer and Paul Slavick and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Thomas Guiney.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at the St. Agnes Chapel of Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown with the Very Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector, officiating.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Syria Temple, 1877 Shriner Way, Cheswick, Pa. 15024 or to the Tribute Fund at Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Edward C. Hatton
MCDONOUGH — Edward C. Hatton, 86, formerly of McDonough died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, in the Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.

He was born April 16, 1912, in Guilford, he was the son of Erwin and Almina Brown Hatton.

Ed had spent most of his life in the Chenango County area where he worked for many years as a farm hand for several area farms in Guilford and Pharsalia. While in Guilford he had also worked for the Guilford Town Highway Department. Ed had also worked as a night watchman for Ford Homes of McDonough. In later years he had worked at the Mt. Hope Cemetery of Norwich for many years and also for Green Thumb program at Bowman Lake State Park.

Ed was a member of the Pharsalia Fire Department and its firepolice.

He enjoyed camping and fishing but above all his favorite past time would be to go picking blueberries.

He is survived by his children, Betty Hatton of Amsterdam, Pauline MacLaury and her friend, Ward Barrows of McDonough, William Hatton and his wife, Myrna of Sidney Center, Phyllis Sease and her friend, Roy  Jackson of Pine City, and Edward E. Hatton of McDonough; three sisters, Leva Cowan of Norwich, Irean Thurston of Norwich, and Helen Spencer of McDonough; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Ed was predeceased by two sisters, Althea Bush and Lina Fleming, and one brother, Clarence Hatton.

Funeral services for Ed will be held on Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich, with Pastor Don Monell officiating.

Burial will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery of Norwich.

Friends may call at the Fahy Funeral Home on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pharsalia Fire Department, care of Christine Grover, P.O. Box 70, East Pharsalia, N.Y. 13758.

Helen E. Gaynor
ONEONTA — Mrs. Helen E. Gaynor, 89, of Oneonta died Wednesday morning, Aug. 19, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born in Lynbrook on Jan. 5, 1909, the daughter of Edwin and Minnie (Sudlow) Van De Water.

She married Joseph J. Gaynor on Jan. 5, 1932, in Oceanside. He died Jan. 10, 1970.

Helen had been employed as a telephone operator for New York Telephone for 20 years in Long Island, prior to her retirement.

She has been a resident of Oneonta since 1971 and the North Franklin areas. Helen has been a resident of the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home since 1985.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Oneonta.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Raymond O. and Eileen Gaynor of Otego; one sister, Mrs. Naomi Weiss of Clearmont, Fla.; two grandchildren, Karla Gaynor of Port  Washington and Kenneth Gaynor of Roslyn Heights.

She was predeceased by three brothers, and three sisters.

A private service will be held later at the families convenience at Greenfield Cemetery, Hempstead, Long Island.

Mrs. Gaynor was cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to the American Diabetes Association, 356 North Midler Ave., Syracuse, N.Y. 13206 in memory of Helen E. Gaynor.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Evelyn C. Billings
BATH — Evelyn C. Billings died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, peacefully at home, after an extended illness.

Evelyn was born Sept. 19, 1912, in Avoca, the daughter of Ina and Will Rowe.

She was the devoted wife of Rumsey C. Billings.

She was employed at R.C. Billings Asphalt Contractors as a secretary for 30 years.

She was the driving force in the early years of the formation and success of R.C. Billings Inc.

She was predeceased by both of her parents, and her husband.

She is survived by her son, Vern and his wife, Mary Lou Billings of Bath; one daughter, JoAnn and her husband, Donald Axtell of Oneonta; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Leona Sick of Arkport; one sister-in-law, Catherine Bedsworth of Corning and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Evelyn's name to the Bath Ambulance Corp or the Bath Presbyterian Church.

Friends may call at the Fagan's Inc. Funeral Home in Bath, Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held in Fagan's Inc. Funeral Home, Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at 11 a.m.

Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Hammondsport.

Werner Haus
ONEONTA — Werner Anthony "Red" Haus of Oneonta died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, at his home.

Red was born Sept. 28, 1940, in Bergenfield, N.J. The son of Anthony Otto and Lona L. (Enders) Haus.

He married Elaine L. Downing on Jan. 1, 1982, in Oneonta.

Red graduated from Laurens Central School in 1958. In 1969 he graduated from the State University College at Oneonta.

Red owned The Beef Box with Peter Granger, The Sour Grape, Red's Filling Station with Kevin Johnson, Susquehanna Service and Supply, and also the Mount Vision Inn Apartments.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine L. Downing; a brother, Ronald Haus; two sisters-in-law, Elsie Haus and Diane Downing; nieces and nephews, Karen and Erik Haus, and John and Elizabeth Lambert; his mother-in-law, Dorothy B. Downing.

At Red's request, there will be no calling hours.

There will be a private memorial service for the family following cremation. For those who feel disposed, contributions may be made to the SUCO Foundation Memorial Scholarship in memory of Werner A. "Red" Haus, care of 6 Ford Ave., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Alice W. Truax
MORRIS — Committal services and burial for Mrs. Alice W. Truax, 73, of Morris, who died Dec. 24, 1997, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, 1998 at the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery with the Rev. Eileen J. Kellogg, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Ward Fancher Jr.
AFTON — Ward Fancher Jr., 73, of Oak Hill Road, Afton died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born, Dec. 25, 1924, in Bovina Center. The son of Ward and Nellie (Miller) Fancher.

He has been a resident of Afton for many years and had previously been a resident of Andes.

Mr. Fancher is survived by a sister, Ida Schlisman of Sidney; a brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Bertha Fancher of Unadilla; and nephews, Robert Mann of Cedar Key, Fla., William and Peter Mann of Sidney, Paul Mann of Gilbertsville, Lawrence Fancher of Oneonta and Thomas Fancher of Saginaw, Mich.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist, Unadilla, officiating.

Burial will be in Andes Cemetery, Andes.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Glenn Ransom Quay
CHURCHVILLE, Md. — Glenn Ransom Quay of Churchville, Md., died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998.

Beloved husband of Barbara Lynn (nee Caudill) Quay. Devoted father of Carey A. Quay, and step-father of Corey M. Weaver and Tia L. Ferguson. Beloved son of Herman E. Sr. and Lolita E. Quay. Loving brother of Herman E. Quay Jr., Kathy A. Winne and Colleen M. Carey. Son-in-law to Dennis L. and Rosalie N. Caudill. Also survived by three grandchildren.

Services will be Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at 2 p.m., at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, Churchville, Md.

Interment will be at Mt. Zion United Methodist Cemetery, Bel Air, Md.

Friends may call at the McComas Funeral Home, Abingdon, Md, from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 3115 Level Rd., Churchville, Md., 21028.

Andrew Mark Gobel
ONEONTA — Andrew Mark Gobel, 16, of Oneonta died suddenly Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, in the town of Prattsville after being struck by an automobile.
He was born Aug. 17, 1982, in Cooperstown, the son of Mark and Lisa (Reed) Gobel.

Andrew was a lifelong area resident and would have been a sophomore this fall at Oneonta High School. In his earlier years he attended elementary school at Greater Plains School.

Andrew was a member of the Junior Varsity soccer team at Oneonta High School as well as a member of the Oneonta Soccer Club. He was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church Family and was active in the Christian Service Brigade at the church and the Youth for Christ Group.

Survived by his parents, Mark and Lisa Gobel of Oneonta; his brother, Peter Gobel of Oneonta; maternal grandparents, Mark and Marcia Reed of Shillington, Pa.; paternal grandparents, Donald and Frances Jane Gobel of Apalachin; aunts and uncles, Patrick and Ellen Reed Wise of Rancho Palos Verdes,  Calif., Donald and Joan Reed Fothergill of Toledo, Ohio, Douglas and Janice Reed of Landisville, Pa., and William and Donna Boyd of Endicott; cousins, Catherine, Ann, and David Moore of Rancho Palos Verdes,  Calif., Sara and Elizabeth Fothergill of Toldedo, Ohio, Joshua, Abigail, Samuel and Sarah Reed of Landisville, Pa.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at 3 p.m. from the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church of Oneonta officiating.

Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta on Saturday evening, Aug. 22, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the Youth for Christ and Main Street Baptist Church to be divided equally for a Scholarship to be established in memory of Andrew Mark Gobel.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Dora A. Simmons
ONEONTA — Mrs. Dora A. Simmons, 88, of Oneonta died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at the Oneonta Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Sept. 22, 1909, in Denmark, the daughter of Hans and Minnie (Christsen) Anderson.

She married Clifford Simmons on June 5, 1929, in Sayre, Pa. He died March 13, 1946.

Dora was a seamstress at the Richards Dress Company on Chestnut Street, Oneonta for several years. She had also attended beauty school in Albany, and held a beauticians license which she utilized tending to hair in private homes throughout the area.

Dora came to the United States in 1913 and became a naturalized citizen when she married. She has been a member of the West Oneonta Baptist Church since she was 14 years old, a member of the International Ladies Garment Union for 20 years, American Association of Retired Persons and Senior Citizens Club of West Oneonta.

Survived by three sons and daughter-in-laws, Clifford and Jean Simmons Jr., of Binghamton, Ronald and Rosalie Simmons of Oneonta, and Steven and Grace Simmons of Burlington Flats; one daughter, Mrs. Joan Schroll of Albany; also survived by 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two daughters, Betty Jean Gardner in July 1990, and June Von Brock in April 1987; two brothers, Ernie and Dutch Anderson; and a sister-in-law, Nellie Anderson.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dougherty, pastor of the West Oneonta Baptist Church, West Oneonta officiating.

Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta on Sunday afternoon and evening, Aug. 23, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
