Elizabeth M. Palmer
OTEGO — Elizabeth M. Palmer, 89, of Otego died April 24, 1998, near Seattle, Wash., from complications associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Mrs. Palmer was born Dec. 14, 1908, in Bridgeport, Conn. Her parents were Henry Waters and Anna McEnerney Waters.

On May 8, 1937, Mrs. Palmer married her husband, Graham, who preceded her in death in 1983.

Mrs. Palmer completed high school in Bridgeport, Conn., and attended Oneonta Normal School. She graduated in 1930, and was employed as an elementary school teacher in Norwich for 10 years. She subsequently worked as a postal clerk at the Otego Post Office for 23 years.

Mrs. Palmer was active in the Otego community for many years as a librarian of the Otego Free Library, a trustee of the Otego Evergreen Cemetery Association, and a member and officer of the Otego Women's Civic Club, the Otego Catholic Club, the Otego Hobby Club, and the Otego Senior Citizens Club. Mrs. Palmer was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and actively involved in the Otego Catholic community.

Mrs. Palmer is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Susan Palmer of Woodinville, Wash., and her grandchildren, Lindsay and Jeffrey Palmer.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.

Contributions to St. Mary's are requested by the family in lieu of flowers.

Helen Kattenhorn
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Helen Kattenhorn, 98, of Cooperstown passed away on Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998.

Helen was born July 27, 1900, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Gustav and Fenna (Harms) Rautenberg.

She attended schools in Brooklyn and was a graduate of Cooper Union College.

Mrs. Kattenhorn worked as a graphic artist before moving to Otsego County with her husband, Henry J. Kattenhorn over 50 years ago.

She is survived by a nephew, Carl Rautenberg of Melville; a great-nephew, Eric Rautenberg of Melville; a great-niece and her husband, Faith and James Allen of Ridge and two great-great-nieces, Sarah and Jenna Allen of Ridge.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at 2 p.m., at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. David Almleaf, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Utica officiating.

Burial will be later at the George  Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, N.J.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Ira W. Hinkley
OXFORD — Ira W. Hinkley, 93, of Oxford passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford.

Ira was born Feb. 17, 1905, to the late Frank A. and Phoebe Jane Barnhardt Hinkley.

He married Lena Schofkom July 1, 1923, in Afton.

Ira retired from the Lackawana Railroad as a yard master in Utica.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lena, and daughters, Arlene Emms and Mary Snyder.

Ira is survived by three sons and daughter-in-laws, Robert and Jeanette Hinkley of Unadilla, James and Anne Hinkley of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, and Ronald and Shirley Hinkley of Lakeland, Fla., and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 East Main St., Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Florence B. Wiedman
EAST MEREDITH — Mrs. Florence B. Wiedman, 82, of East Meredith died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born July 8, 1916, in the town of Meredith-at-Meridale, the daughter of the late Harry and Eva (Wardwell) Beams.

Florence was married twice. Her first marriage was to Lewis Callahan on Aug. 29, 1935. Mr. Callahan died in 1942. Her second marriage was to Herman Wiedman on March 3, 1956. Mr. Wiedman died on Oct. 2, 1989.

For most of her lifetime, Florence has lived in East Meredith since 1925. For a few years, she had lived in Unadilla as well as in the city of Schenectady.

During her working years, she had worked in Bendix plant-Scintilla at Sidney for five years. For a while she ws a clerk in the Family Bargain Center, located in Sidney and Oneonta. She also was a clerk for the General Store at East Meredith. For 10 years, she was employed at the cafeteria as its manager at the Charlotte Valley Central School of Davenport. Florence retired from the school cafeteria in June 1982.

Florence was a lifetime member of the East Meredith Presbyterian Church. She was a lifetime member and former president of the East Meredith Christian Endeavor. She was a longtime member and officer of the Davenport Rebekah Lodge. She also was a member of the East Meredith Women's Volunteer Fire Department. She was a longtime member of the East Meredith Women's Association.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Todd (Jacqueline "Jacky") Moore of East Meredith; three sons, Larry L. Callahan and Harry Leland "Leaky" Callahan, both of East Meredith and Arnold Waye "Butch" Callahan of Lakeland, Fla.; one brother, Leslie Harold "Les" Beams of Port Jervis; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Stewart William (Doris) Beams of East Meredith, Mrs. Gustave (Margaret)  Schmidt of Oneonta Nursing Home and Mrs. Anthony (Fannie) Bettiol of A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home, Oneonta; 14 grandchildren, Lewis, Pamela, Brenda, John, Theresa, Diane, Casey, Christopher, Curtis and Arnold Callahan Jr., Patricia Saburro, Thomas Decker, Nicole Moore and Kaitlyn Moore; 19 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at the East Meredith Presbyterian Church, East Meredith at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998.

The Rev. Tracie Martin, pastor of the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Parish of Davenport will officiate.

Burial will be at the Davenport Cemetery at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23.

Visiting time will be from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta when Mrs. Wiedman's family will be present.

Mrs. Wiedman has requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be sent to the East Meredith Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, c/o Mrs. Barbara MacClintock, East Meredith, N.Y. 13757.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Gerald M. Allen
SCHENEVUS — Gerald M. Allen, 74, of Schenevus, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born March 28, 1924, in Worcester, the son of George and Ethel (McClintock) Allen.

Jerry was raised in Worcester and has lived in Schenevus for over 50 years.

He was employed for 42 years at General Electric in Schenectady in the Gas Turbine Department.

Jerry was a member of the Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge No. 592, Kalurah Temple, Binghamton, the Otsego/Schoharie Shrine Club and was an honorary member of both the Schenevus/Maryland Emergency Squad and the C.H. Graham Hose Company, Schenevus.

He is survived by his best friend and companion, Shirley R. Comino of Schenevus; daughter, Janet Boyles of Harrington, Del.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Mari Allen of Schenevus and Gary and Suzanne Allen of Schenevus; stepchildren and their spouses, Peter and Jo Anne Comino of Schenevus, Bruce and Deborah Eichler of Palm Springs,  Calif., Roger and Susan Barnes of Otego, and Joe and Paula Comino of Otego; two sisters-in-law, Merial Allen of  Pennsylvania and Alice Allen of Florida and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents and three brothers, Earl, Ernest and Stewart.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus with the Rev. Bonnie McGraw, pastor of the Schenevus United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Schenevus Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held Sunday, Aug. 23, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus. A Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Jerry to the Schenevus/Maryland Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 272, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Julia C. Oliver
LAURENS — Mrs. Julia C. Oliver, 77, of Laurens died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Emergency Room.

She was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Ogdensburg, the daughter of George and Gertrude (McGreggor) Shirley.

Julia had been a homemaker in her own home. She lived most of her life in the Laurens and Winney Hill area. For years she assisted the Laurens Ambulance Squad as the squad babysitter for children of squad members when they were on ambulance calls. She also assisted the Ladies Auxiliary with preparing sandwiches during fires and most recently the tornadoes that had occurred in this area.

She is survived by one son, Jack Conrade of Florida; three daughters and a son-in-law, Mrs. Shirley Kingsbury of Oneonta, Sandra and David Vadney of West Laurens and Tina Oliver of Laurens; 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one nephew.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Jim Maher, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, West Oneonta and the Rev. LaVerne Saxer, pastor of the Hartwick Christian Church, Hartwick, will officiate.

Burial will be in the Laurens Cemetery, Laurens.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta on Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, from 1 p.m.-service time when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to the Laurens Emergency Squad or the Laurens Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Laurens, N.Y. 13796 in memory of Julia Oliver.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Vera Palmer Haley
LONG BEACH, Calif — Vera Palmer Haley, 90, of Long Beach,  Calif. passed away Aug. 19, 1998, at her residence following an illness.

She was born in Hacketville, the daughter of Charles and Edna Smith Palmer.

She lived in Bloomville, Sullivan County, and Kingston prior to retiring to Long Beach.

She is survived by one daughter, Laurel Herdman of Long Beach,  Calif.; one son, John Wayne Haley of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister, Lovina Garboechesky of Edison, N.J.; brothers, Earl Palmer of Round Rock,  Texas and Homer Palmer of Marble Falls,  Texas; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sons, James and Henry Clark; brothers, Edward and Charles Palmer; sister, Olive Bright; stepsister, Pearl Williamson and stepbrother, Carlton Palmer.

A graduate of Hobart Central School and Oneonta College, she was chapter president of the American Gold Star Mothers Inc., having lost a son in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. She was a member of the Dominguez United Methodist Church in Long Beach,  Calif.

Memorial services were held in Long Beach on Aug. 21, 1998, and a graveside service and celebration of Vera's life will be held Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Riverside Cemetery in Bloomville.

Christina Lynn Piragnoli
COBLESKILL — Christina Lynn Piragnoli, 24, of Cobleskill and formerly of Unadilla died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County, Cobleskill from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born April 9, 1974, in Dallas,  Texas, the daughter of Roger and Diane (Krebbs) Bourassa.

She was a former resident of Unadilla and for the last five years was a resident of the Cobleskill area.

At one time she attended the Unatego Cental School and was currently employed at Interknitting in Cobleskill.

Christina is survived by her mother and father, Diane and Gleason Puffer Jr. of Unadilla; two sons, Alexander Kouse and Stephon Mejia of Cobleskill; her fiance, Juan Mejia of Cobleskill; a brother and sister-in-law, Clifford and Heather Bourassa of Richfield Springs; a maternal grandmother, Lillie Marie Krebbs of Arlington,  Texas; paternal grandparents, Gleason Sr. and Luella Puffer of Unadilla and Martha Puffer of Bainbridge and several aunts, uncles, cousins and a niece.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Linn Robert  White
MARYLAND — Linn Robert  White, 78, of Maryland died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown following a long illness.

He was born Oct. 1, 1919, to Linn Henry and Elsie Mae (Church)  White.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Jean W.  White; daugher, Linda R. ( White) Alton Van Cleef of Hartwick; two sons, Dennis B. (JoAnne)  White of Wellsville and Roger D. (Nancy)  White of Langley, Wash.; three granddaughters, Heather, Jaime and Jacey; four grandsons, Bradley, Matthew, Travis and Taylor; one great-grandson, Jacob; a sister, Margaret Graydon of Greenville, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at 1 p.m. in the Maryland Baptist Church, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Schenevus/Maryland Emergency Squad, Schenevus.
