Theodore R. Simmons
EAST WORCESTER — Mr. Theodore R. Simmons, 78, of West Hill Road, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at his residence following a short illness.

Mr. Simmons was born Aug. 9, 1920, in Seward, the son of Ernest and Perlina (King) Simmons.

Mr. Simmons resided in Cobleskill most of his life, retiring as the proprietor of Simmons' Oil Company, which he owned from 1968 until 1983. Prior to that, he was employed by the former Richard's Oil Company, which was later sold to Gulf Oil and then Mr. Simmons purchased the company. At one time he was employed as a work knitter for Fenimore Fabrics of Cobleskill.

Mr. Simmons was a United States Navy veteran, serving from 1944 until 1945. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 5088 of Cobleskill.

Mr. Simmons' first wife, Lora (Varnes) Simmons, died Sept. 23, 1992. He remarried to Charlotte (Johns Francis) Simmons on May 15, 1993, which is when he relocated to East Worcester. Mr. Simmons and his wife wintered in Lake Worth, Fla.

He attended the First Baptist Church of East Worcester.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte (Johns Francis) Simmons of East Worcester; one daughter, Sharon Lee Safford of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one son, Theodore W. Simmons of Cobleskill; one stepson, Kenneth Francis of Ayden, N.C.; and one granddaughter, Katelynn Simmons of Cobleskill.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be Rev. Benny W. Wilkerson of the First Baptist Church of East Worcester.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 7, when the VFW will hold a service at 7 p.m. Burial will in the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 877, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043; or Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Alice B. Ottman
CHERRY VALLEY — Alice B. Ottman of Cherry Valley and Palm Bay, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998, in Florida.

She was born Feb. 28, 1910, in Arlington, Vt., the daughter of Edward and Mable (Scully) Buck.

On Nov. 7, 1931, she married Francis "Ottie" Ottman in Cobleskill. He predeceased her on Jan. 31, 1995.

After moving with her family to Cobleskill in 1916, she attended Cobleskill High School. During World War II, she worked in the glove factory in Cherry Valley making gloves for the soldiers. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband in the managing of the A&P Food Stores in Little Falls and Cherry Valley.

Mrs. Ottman later worked at the Lark Street School in Cobleskill until her retirement.

She was a long-standing member of the Eastern Star, a 50-year member of the Rebekahs of Cherry Valley and a member of the Methodist Church, Cobleskill.

Mrs. Ottman was a homemaker, avid reader and card player. She enjoyed traveling, spending her winters in Florida and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Millie and Alvah VenDerwerker of Cherry Valley, and Mary and Jess Oliver of Palm Bay, Fla.; one sister, Jane Bohlinger of Petersburg, Va.; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, four nieces and three nephews.

Mrs. Ottman was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Buck, in 1994.

Contributions in Mrs. Ottman's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Rebekah Lodge or the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with Mark Oliver (grandson), officiating. Private burial will follow at a later date in the Cobleskill Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours. Cremation took place in Florida.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Harold W. Hayes
CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Harold W. Hayes, 69, passed away Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, after being suddenly stricken at home.

He was born July 2, 1929, in Cherry Valley, the son of Harold E. and Mary Jane (Gault) Hayes.

On Sept. 24, 1959, he married Esther M. Allen in Schuyler Lake.

A lifelong resident, he was a graduate of Cherry Valley Central School, class of 1949.

Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife, Esther Hayes of Cherry Valley; three sons, Brevoort of Fonda, Lance of Virginia and Mark of Cherry Valley; two daughters, Lisa Allen of Cherry Valley and Pattie McAllister of North Carolina; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

He was a councilman for the town of Middlefield for many years, a member of PaPa's Antique Engine Club and a member of Marcus Dairy Association and the Holstein Association. His hobbies included collecting old tractors, engines and guns. He enjoyed going to engine and tractors shows. Most of all he enjoyed his family and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery.

Calling hours will take place Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Mr. Hayes' memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad or the PaPa's Antique Engine Club, 166 Gage School House Road, Cherry Valley, c/o Robert Kenyon.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Mary Krawitz
ONEONTA — Mary Krawitz, 94, died in her sleep on Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

Mary was born in Kiev, Russia, on May 23, 1904, the daughter of Samuel and Natalie (Brenner) Tepfer.

She came to the United States in 1906. Mary married Jacob "Jack" Krawitz on Oct. 26, 1921, in Brooklyn. They were married for 41 years until Jacob's death in 1962.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Rena Messer of Oneonta, and a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. Stanley and Joan Krawitz of Long Island. She is survived by five grandchildren, Jonathan Messer, Elizabeth Brown, Deborah Levy, and Alan and Spencer Krawitz; and six great-grandchildren, Jeffrey and Rachel Messer, Adam and Chelsea Brown, and Deanna and Adam Levy.

Mary was predeceased by her four brothers, a sister, and her son-in-law, Alexander Messer, of whom she was very fond.

Graveside services will be held at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Queens, on Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at 11 a.m. Rabbi Donald Neil Roberts of Temple Beth-El of Oneonta will officiate.

Expressions of sympathy in Mary's name may be made to the Temple Beth-El building fund.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

William H. Weaver
FLY CREEK — Mr. William H. Weaver, 80, passed away Sept. 2, 1998, at his home.

He was born Oct. 15, 1917, in Miamisburg, Ohio, the son of Harry Clay and Clara (Hurst) Weaver.

Mr. Weaver was a captain in the U.S. Air Force, as a combat pilot from 1941-1945. During World War II, he piloted P-38s with the 9th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron in the China, Burma, India Theatre. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal Cluster and four battle stars.

He was an actor in the Broadway theater and on tours. He was an active actor, director and stage manager in stage, radio and television. He worked with stars like Rex Harrison, Ingrid Bergman, Claudette Colbert, Paul Newman, Jean Stapleton, Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn and many more. He was a member of the Actors Equity Association, Screen Actors Guild, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

With the internationally known choreographer Paul Sanasando in 1972 he restored in a farm in Fly Creek Valley and retired there in 1986.

Mr. Weaver is survived by two sisters, Mary Ette Kauffman of Troy, Ohio and Clara Weaver of Cooperstown.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Barbara Weaver and Joan Hubbard.

There will be no public services.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Nancy C. Roberts
OCALA, Fla. — Nancy C. Roberts, 67, of Ocala, Fla., and formerly of Holland Patent, died Sept. 3, 1998, at the Monroe Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

She was born on Aug. 2, 1931, in Gloversville, the daughter of Gregory and Ivy (Harris) Conover, and was married to Richard "Dick" Roberts on Aug. 15, 1953, in Gloversville.

Mrs. Roberts graduated from Oneonta State Teachers College, Class of 1952. She was a first-grade teacher for over 30 years, having taught in the Holland Patent school system from 1964 until her retirement in 1987.

She is survived by her husband at home in Ocala, Fla.; two sons, Rick Roberts of Gansevoort and Brian Roberts of Lenexa, Kan.; four grandchildren, Ashley, Lauren, Lindsay and Aaron Roberts; one sister, Clair Burns of Clinton; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was predeceased by a sister, Marilyn Wille.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

William J. Stohlman
ROCKVILLE, Md. — Dr. William J. Stohlman of Rockville, Md., died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Grogan Stohlman; children, J. William, Mary Elizabeth MacLauchlan, Helen, Theresa Mohan, Clare, Eileen Johnson, Barry, Louis, Carolyn and Frank; 16 grandchildren; sisters, Ann Donohoe and Mae Beuchert; and a brother, Robert Stohlman.

Friends may call at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 E. Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, Md., on Monday from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Summit Avenue and Cable Drive, Kensington, Md., on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at 10 a.m.

Interment will be at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Pathfinder Village, R.R. 1, Box 32-A, Edmeston, N.Y. 13335.

DeVol Funeral Home, Gaithersburg, Md., is in charge of services.

Frederick Kent
OTEGO — Mr. Frederick Kent, 73, of Otego died Saturday morning, Sept. 5, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Sept. 14, 1924, in Manhattan, the son of Charles Joseph Henry and Ida (Yonkers) Kent.

Fred married the former Dorothy Harris on Oct. 27, 1951, at the First Christian Church, West Branch of the Otsdawa, Otego. She survives him.

Fred lived most of his life in this area, having moved with his family to Hartwick from Long Island in his early years. He moved to Otego in 1948.

A veteran of World War II, Fred was a sergeant with the United States Marine Corps during the war. After leaving the service, he was employed for a few years with the D&H Railroad in Oneonta.

Prior to his retirement about 13 years ago, Fred had been the supervisor of the Electric Shop at the State University College at Oneonta for a number of years.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Otego, where he was quite active as a Sunday School teacher. He had also served as a deacon as well as serving on other church committees over the years.

Fred enjoyed flying, collecting radio-controlled airplanes, woodworking, fishing and fixing things.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dorothy (Harris) Kent of Otego; two daughters and a son-in-law, Peggy and Walter Kunkler of Otego, Jane Marie Kent of Secaucus, N.J.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Cynthia Kent of Alabama, Nathan and Dorothea Kent of Wisconsin; two granddaughters, Jenness and Emily Kunkler of Otego; two nephews, Charles of Alabama and Dale of Minnesota; three nieces, Kathy Ritchie of Minnesota and Donna and Cindy of Alabama.

He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Joseph Kent, and a sister, Martha Kent.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the First Christian Church, West Branch, Otsdawa, Otego with the Rev. Stephen Miller, pastor of the First Christian Church, and retired pastor Willard Miller officiating.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

It has been requested that the burial be private for the family only at the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that expressions of sympathy be given to either Tom Claus, Chief Indian Mission, 1644 East Campo Bello Dr., Phoenix, Ariz. 85022-2108; the Oneonta Community Christian School, 160 River St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820. or the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905 in memory of Frederick Kent.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Mildred C. Wright
PITTSFIELD — Mildred C. Wright, 80, of Pittsfield died Sept. 5, 1998, in New Berlin.

She was born Oct. 7, 1917 in Pittsfield, the daughter of Glen and Edna (Spafford) Christman.

She married Frank E. Wright, who survives, on July 23, 1945.

Her childhood was spent in Pittsfield.

She attended area schools.

She was a cafeteria worker for New Berlin Central School until her retirement in 1976.

She was a member of the Berean Baptist Church, New Berlin.

She is survived by her children, Frank N. Wright of Reamstown, Pa., Arlene Boice of Sherburne; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one brother, Roy Christman of Oneida.

She is predeceased by one sister, Evelyn Mumford.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Berean Baptist Church, New Berlin with Pastor Gary Folz of the Berean Baptist Church in New Berlin and Pastor Dwight Kenyon officiating.

Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Calling hours will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.
