Yvonne Marie Ritchie
HARPURSVILLE — Yvonne Marie Ritchie, 65, of Harpursville, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at her home.
She was born, Jan. 26, 1933, in Oneonta, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Brooks) Mewhorter.

She has been a resident of Harpursville since 1992 and for most of her life she was a tri-town area resident. She was a former employee of Amphenol Corp. of Sidney.

Yvonne is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Linda Reynolds and Ronald and Darleen Reynolds of Harpursville; two step-sons, Mitchell Edgett of Mount Upton and Richard Edgett of Sidney; three daughters and a son-in-law, Ellen Siemer of St. Louis, Mo., Cathy and Kenneth O'Keefe of Bennettsville, and Terry Sue VerValin of Oxford; three brothers, John Mewhorter Sr. of Cooperstown, Earl Mewhorter of Orange City, Fla., and Ralph Mewhorter of Mount Upton; four sisters, Marjorie Christensen of Taber, Alberta, Canada, Delores DuBois of Phenix City, Ala., Evelyn Chesley of Compton, N.H., and Mary Knapp of Oneonta; also 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two sons, August and Allen Edgett, a grandson, Bryan Reynolds, and a brother, Robert W. Mewhorter.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla with the Rev. James P. Balson Jr., pastor of The Brisben Baptist Church, Oxford, officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Thomas J. McClellan
NORTH HARPERSFIELD — Thomas J. McClellan, 85, of Austin Road, Harpersfield, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born May 11, 1913, in Somerville, Mass., the son of Henry E. and Katherine (Bickford) McClellan.

He was married to Harriet Crandall.

Thomas was a salesman for the S.S. Pierce Co. in Boston, Mass., for many years. He lived in North Harpersfield for the past 15 years. He enjoyed gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet Crandall of North Harpersfield; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Dennis Smith of Corning; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Arthur and Camille Crandall of Delanson, and Donald Crandall of  Jefferson; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the West  Jefferson Cemetery, West  Jefferson.

There will be no calling hours.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Thomas' memory to the Robinson Terrace Quality of Life Fund, Harper Street, Stamford, N.Y., 12167.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Catherine A. Livanavage
BEDMINSTER, N.J. — Catherine A. Livanavage, 49, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998.
She was born in Brooklyn, and spent the first part of her life in upstate New York. She and her family moved to New Jersey where they have resided for the last 23 years.

Catherine was a strong supporter of the arts and of organizations that advocated for the improvement of animals' lives. She was an avid equestrian and devoted much time to the enjoyment of the sport.

She was a loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, and a very giving friend.

She is survived by her husband, Stephen; her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Carl Lusins; a grandson, Alexander, all of Oneonta; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Rachel Livanavage of Phoenix, Ariz.; her parents, William and Lucille Burkert of Middletown; her brother, Steven of Memphis, Tenn.; and her many animal and people friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to be made to your favorite animal charity.

Memorial services will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at the family home in Bedminster, N.J.

Ella R. Carr
SCHUYLER LAKE — Ella R. Carr, 86, died on Sunday morning, Sept. 6, 1998, in her home with her family at her beside.

She was born on Dec. 20, 1911, in Schuyler Lake, a daughter of the late Fred and Maude Shaul Rathbun.

Raised and educated in Schuyler Lake, she was a graduate of Schuyler Lake High School and went on to Fedoria State University for her teaching degree.

In August of 1941, she married Dr. Earl Burton Carr, in Schuyler Lake. He predeceased her on Jan. 24, 1962.

For many years she taught music, retiring from Richfield Springs Central School System in 1976.

A member of the Christ Episcopal Church, Cooperstown, she was the organist for the Schuyler Lake Methodist Church and the Old Stone Church in Schuyler Lake. Active in her community, she was a member of the town of Exeter Historical Society, serving as treasurer for many years; a trustee of the Schuyler Lake Cemetery Association; and a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association.

Surviving are a sister, Hilda Mulligan of Schuyler Lake; nieces and nephews, Susan and Larry Hallenbeck of Endicott, Fred and Patricia Kurkowski of Sebastian, Fla., Ramone and Mark Kimmins of  Jefferson City, Tenn., Robert Kurkowski and Cathy of W. Palm Beach, Fla., and Perry Rathbun Jr. and Vicky of Mariposa, Calif; grandnieces and nephews, Travis and Daniel Kimmins, Kyle and Erin Hallenbeck, and Sydney Kurkowski.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Elwyn, Perry and Fred Rathbun and her sister, Janeth Kurkowski on Dec. 4, 1997.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the Schuyler Lake Methodist Church Restoration Fund, Schuyler Lake, N.Y., 13457.

Funeral arrangements are through J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Stella Kwiecien
BAINBRIDGE — Stella Kwiecien, 76, passed away on Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, in Harpursville.

She was born April 15, 1922, in Bialy Kamien, Poland.

At a young age, Stella was captured and imprisoned in Germany for seven years. At the end of the war, boundaries were re-divided in a treaty in which her home was turned over to Russia.

Refugees were forced to return to their place of origin, but Stella's mother told her in a tragic letter that returning home would be a death sentence. Stella escaped from Germany to England with the help of her husband, Stanley Kwiecien. Stella soon received a Red Cross document declaring her to be the sole survivor of her family. Stella came to the United States with her husband and children.

She was a resident of Sidney for 18 years, always feeling a close bond with wildlife and all of nature.

Stella was predeceased by her husband, Stanley, in February of 1984.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Russell C. LeBar of Bainbridge; her daughter, Barbara Kwiecien of Hancock; grandson, Russell J. LeBar; and granddaughter, Maria Jeannette LeBar.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at Sacred Heart Church, Sidney at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz officiating.

Friends may call from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made in Stella's name to Broome Developmental Center, Donation Account, 249 Glenwood Rd., Binghamton, N.Y., 13905.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Charles (Charlie) V. Cassens
GRAND GORGE — Charles (Charlie) V. Cassens, 79, died at home, Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, after a short illness.

He was an area resident for 17 years, relocating from Union City, N.J.

Charlie was a retired truck driver for Red Star Trucking, in Newark, N.J.

Charlie served in World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Ida (nee) Keever; five daughters, Ida Elfort of Clifton, N.J., Corrine Salenne of Stroudsburg, Pa., Judy Birdsell of Raleigh, N.C., Barbara Cassens of Albany, and Jacqulyn Haemmerle of Gilboa; three sons, Charles Cassens of Floral Park, William Cassens of Martinville, Ind., and Richard Cassens of Union City, N.J.; 30 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, and Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St., (corner of Liberty) Stamford.

Funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at 9:30 a.m, at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the William A. Tari Funeral Home, Stamford.

Inez Ives
SIDNEY — Inez Louise Ballard Ives, 82, of Sidney passed away Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born May 13, 1916, to the late Ward and Mabel Ray Randall in Guilford.

Inez was an inspector at E.C.D. of Bendix. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, and often attended services at the Circle Drive Alliance Church, Sidney.

Inez was also a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Sidney, Chapter No. 255.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Curtis O. Ballard in 1972, and her second husband, Marvin Ives in 1985.

Inez is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Sylvia Ballard of Santa Clarita,  Calif., Gordon W. Ballard of Sidney, Graydon and Irene Ballard of Sidney, and Raymond and Maria Ballard of Sidney; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl and Kathy Randall of Afton, Stanley and Thelma Randall of Binghamton, and Bud Coolidge of Halstead, Pa.; one sister, Dorothy Fryover of Norwich; one sister-in-law, Gertrude Randall; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Inez is also predeceased by two brothers, Gerald and Orson Randall.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Thomas R. Flanders of the Circle Drive Alliance Church, Sidney, officiating.

Friends may call Friday, Sept. 11, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

A service by the Order of the Eastern Star will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 1998.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad or the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Boulevard, Suite 1010, Rockville, Md., 20852.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Josephine Preston
WORCESTER — Josephine Y. Preston, 58, of Worcester died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown after a lengthy illness.

She was born Dec. 26, 1939, in Queens, the daughter of Hector and Margaret (Pymm) Riendeau.

She married Willis Preston.

Josephine moved to Worcester in 1974.

She was an aide at Worcester Central School for eight years and attended St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester.

She is survived by her husband, Willis Preston of Worcester; two daughters, Yvette Scotland of Sparta, N.J., and Tracey Butler of Troy; two grandchildren, Alexander and Meaghan Scotland; brother, Joseph Riendeau of Morris; sister, Patricia Melech of Worcester; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. William Crandall, pastor, as celebrant.

Burial will follow at the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Calling hours will be on Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. with a recitation of the Rosary at 8 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in memory of Josephine to the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, N.Y., 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.
