Charles Cassens
GRAND GORGE — Charles "Charlie" V. Cassens, 79, died at home, Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, after a short illness.

He was an area resident for 17 years, relocating from Union City, N.J.

Charlie was a retired truck driver for Red Star Trucking, in Newark, N.J.

Charlie served in World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Ida (nee) Keever; five daughters, Ida Elfort of Clifton, N.J., Corrine Salenne of Stroudsburg, Pa., Judy Birdsell of Raleigh, N.C., Barbara Cassens of Albany, and Jacqulyn Haemmerle of Gilboa; three sons, Charles Cassens of Floral Park, William Cassens of Martinville, Ind., and Richard Cassens of Union City, N.J.; 30 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Friends called on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, and can call on Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St., (corner of Liberty) Stamford.

Funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at 9:30 a.m, at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the William A. Tari Funeral Home, Stamford.

James Ritchko
ONEONTA — James Ritchko, 71, of Oneonta died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at A.O. Fox Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was born Jan. 1, 1927, in Oneonta, the son of Mary and Peter Ritchko.

In 1944, he married Beverly Richards in Oneonta. She died in 1968.

Mr. Ritchko was a graduate of Oneonta High School, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and attended Colgate University.

He was a lifelong area resident and along with other family members, owned and operated Ritchko's Market on West Broadway in Oneonta.

He is survived by two brothers, Paul of Oneonta, and Arthur and his wife, Sue Ann Ritchko, of Glenmont; and a sister, Katherine Ritchko of The Meadows. He is also survived by his children, Terry Ritchko of North Carolina, Craig Ritchko and his wife, Debbie, of Otego, Joan Cooper and her husband, John, of Pittsburgh, Pa., Bruce Ritchko and his wife, Joanne, of Oneonta, and MaryLou Bevins and her husband, Frank, of Oneonta; 12 grandchildren, Michael, Patrick, Chris Ann and Brian Ritchko, all of Colorado, Karen and Kelly Cooper of Pittsburgh, Pa., James and Tatiana Ritchko of Oneonta, Kyle and Katrina Ritchko of Otego, Kevin Ritchko of Oneonta, and Chad Ritchko of Oneonta; and three great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Harry "Peter" and Fred Ritchko.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta with the Rev. Canon Mark Cole, officiating. Burial will be in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, after 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m. Monday.

Anthony F. Alley
ONEONTA — Anthony F. Alley, 64, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born on Jan. 7, 1934, in Oneonta, the son of Thomas and Palma (DiGiovanni) Alley.

Tony retired in 1996 as a machinist with Allied Amphenol in Sidney, where he was employed for 42 years. He also served in the United States Army National Guard as a master sergeant.

He was a lifelong resident and member of St. Mary's Church. Tony also belonged to Lodge 1529 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing and canoeing. He was a great believer in physical fitness and worked out daily at the Bassett Healthcare Center in Oneonta.

He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Teresa and John Roy of Attleboro, Mass., Toni and Gary Bannister of LaGrange, Ky., and Thomas and Lorraine Alley of Syracuse; four grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Glenn Shultis of Oneonta. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Tony was predeceased by a brother and a sister, Robert Alley and Margaret Ploutz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call on Sunday from 7-9 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Florence P. Mahoney
STUART, Fla. — Florence Phelps Mahoney of Stuart, Fla., died Sept. 7, 1998, at Martins Memorial Hospital, South. She was 95 and had lived in Stuart since 1972.

She was born Jan. 15, 1903, to Elmer Ellsworth Phelps and Matilda Cooper Phelps in Rye.

Raised in  White Plains, she graduated from  White Plains High School. She was a graduate of Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn.

The widow of the late Richard G. Mahoney, she is survived by two nephews, Stanley H. Engle of Bryn Mawr, Pa., and Blair H. Engle of Tallahassee, Fla.

A resident of Schenevus from 1953-1972, she was a member of the Schenevus Methodist Church and Daughters of the American Revolution, Halpatickee Chapter.

Aycock Funeral Home in Stuart is handling the arrangements. Interment will be in Schenevus.

Matilda Friedman
DENVER — Matilda Friedman, 73, of Denver died at her home on Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998.
She was born Sept. 16, 1924, in Linden, N.J., the daughter of Abraham and Rebecca Chernotsky.

Before her retirement in 1988, she had been a teacher of special education in Old Bridge, N.J. Upon moving to Delaware County she became a member of the Writers in the Mountains (Roxbury).

She was a graduate of the University of Michigan and Kean College.

Surviving is her husband of 47 years, Nathan; a son, Henry of Bethesda, Md.; a daughter, Heidi of Woodstock; and two granchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at noon, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville. Burial will follow at B'Nai Israel Cemetery, Fleischmanns.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Bruce H. Bolton
BURLINGTON — Bruce H. Bolton, 77, of Burlington died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at home with his family by his side.

He was born Jan. 30, 1921, in Burlington, the son of Harold and Marie (Hull) Bolton.

He married Dorothy Benjamin on June 30, 1945, in Laurens.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy; his children and their spouses, Pat Bolton, Jim and Tam Bolton, Jack and Gail Bolton, and Tom and Demi Bolton; his grandchildren, April, Dan, Mark, Mike, Jeremy, Kevin, Ryan; his brother, Charles Bolton; his sisters, Virginia Gillen and Audrey Skubitz; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, one sister and his grandchildren, David and Ericka.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Burlington Green Cemetery with the Rev. John Young officiating.

Calling hours are today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bruce's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

L. Virginia Fassett
CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. L. Virginia Fassett, 70, passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born Sept. 22, 1927, in Burlington Flats, the daughter of Harold and Alice (Jenkins) Pierce.

On Oct. 7, 1972, she married Francis LaDrue Fassett in South Valley. He predeceased her on Dec. 25, 1993.

Mrs. Fassett had worked as a waitress at various locations including the Tryon Inn in Cherry Valley.

She is survived by two sons, Mr. Antonio Rivas of Colorado Springs,  Colo., and Mr. John Rivas of Cherry Valley; six daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Regina) Miller of Cherry Valley, Ms. Jane O'Brian, Ms. Cynthia O'Brian, and Ms. Marguerite Berberick, all of Cherry Valley, Ms. Patricia Hannah of Vail, Ariz., and Ms. Linda Munchine of Tennessee; a brother, Eugene Pierce of Binghamton; two sisters, Laura Poulson of Sharon Springs and Betty Roberts of Richfield Springs; 16 granchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Fassett was predeceased by two sisters, Mildred Bowen and Lillian Cornell, two brothers, Harry Pierce and Charles Pierce.

Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley with the Rev. Wilfred Lyon officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Calling hours will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mrs. Fassett's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad, Cherry Valley, N.Y. 13320.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Patricia E. Finn
PALMETTO, Fla. — Mrs. Patricia E. Finn, 77, of Palmetto, Fla. died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at the Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton, Fla.

She was born March 2, 1921 in Utica.

She moved to Manatee County from Oneonta in 1986. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, Owen V. Finn.

She is survived by her four daughters, Patricia A. Norton of Tampa, Fla., Mary L. Ritchko of Palmetto, Fla., Eileen Deloreto of Mount Pleasant, S.C. and Kathleen M. Frier of San Jose,  Calif.; one son, David J. Finn of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Donald Miekam of Utica; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m., with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. at Kicliter Funeral Home, 517 8th Ave. West, Palmetto, Fla.

A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Palmetto, Fla.

Funeral arrangements are by Kicliter Funeral Home, Palmetto, Fla.

Margaret (Maples) Hemgen
WALLINGFORD, Conn. — Margaret (Maples) Hemgen, 77, of Wallingford, Conn. formerly of Hicksville died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998.

She was born in Oneonta, the daughter of the late David and Elizabeth (Chase) Maples, she was a resident of Wallingford for 10 years, after retiring from Sears, Hicksville, as customer service manager.

Mrs. Hemgen founded and was president of the Nassau County Ileitis and Colitis Foundation for five years. She was also president of the Brentwood Village Condominium Association, in Wallingford, for two years.

She is survived by her husband, Norbert; her son, Stephen Hemgen of Silver Spring, Md.; three daughters, Karen Sepp of Rancho Santa Margarita,  Calif., Mary Jo Livingston of Massapequa Park and Barbara Looney of Higganum, Conn.; a sister, Ruth (Maples) Bowen of Danbury, Conn.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by a brother, David Edward Maples.

Friends may call at the Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., Yalesville, Conn., from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998.

A Mass of Christian Burial at Most Holy Trinity Church, 68 North Colony St., (Route 5), Wallingford, Conn. at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998. Burial and prayers will be at The Cemetery of the Holy Rood, 111 Old Country Road, Westbury, Long Island on Wednesday, at 1:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Chestelm Health Care Center Auxiliary, P.O. Box 718, 534 Town St., Moodus, Conn., 06469.

Arthur L. Johnsen
FERGUSONVILLE — Mr. Arthur L. Johnsen, 80, of Fergusonville died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born March 30, 1918, in Brooklyn. The son of John and Ananda Johnsen.

He married Georgianna Berner on Jan. 17, 1942, in Worcester.

Having lived in the area since he was 23, Arthur owned and operated a farm in Simpsonville for 25 years. After farming, Art began his own contracting business having built more than 100 homes and barns in the area. At one time, Art had built the largest barn in New York state. He built the home that his family resides in. He also sold Jamesway Barn Equipment. Arthur was a well-known builder and will be greatly missed by all.

Arthur was an avid baseball fan. He enjoyed his flowers and his gardening, his beloved cats, traveling and watching the birds.

Arthur is survived by his wife, Georgianna Johnsen of Fergusonville; his two daughters, Muriel A. Johnsen of Fergusonville and Linda S. Johnsen and her husband, Brink Bloembergen of Orange,  Calif.; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael A. and Judith Johnsen of Anaheim Hills,  Calif.; a half-sister, Flora  Taylor of Gilbertsville; one grandson, Michael A. Johnsen II; two great-grandchildren, Alec Paul Johnsen and Rebecca Johnsen; one niece, Norma Nydam of New Jersey; one nephew, John Nydam of East Meredith as well as several other nieces and nephews.

Arthur was predeceased by one sister, Annette Nydam.

A service to celebrate the life of Arthur L. Johnsen will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church of Davenport. There will be a luncheon following the service for those who would like to attend.

The Rev. Judith Humphrey-Fox, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Davenport, will officiate.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Davenport Fire Department, Davenport, Davenport First Responders, Davenport, the Davenport Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Emergency Room or to the Intensive Care Unit in loving memory of Arthur L. Johnsen.

Verner A. MacRabie
FRANKLIN — Verner Aldon MacRabie, 86, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Priscilla and Steven Pickwick, where he had been living.

He was born July 27, 1912 in Bethel, the son of Aldon R. and Ethel (Bovee) MacRabie.

He married Ida M. Randell on Aug. 29, 1938 in East Stroudsburg, Pa.

Verner was truly a self-made man. His early years were spent on the family farm, which is now known as Woodstock. Although only able to obtain a sixth-grade education, he learned and worked the family trade of carpentry until he became fascinated with radio repair. He received his diploma from the National Radio Institute in  Washington, D.C. on Aug. 13, 1934.

After his marriage and move to Franklin, he opened MacRabie's Radio and TV Shop. He was the pioneer in radio and television in this area. Considered an expert, he repaired sets shipped to him from all across the United States. In later years, he also worked as a skilled cabinet maker.

Verner balanced his work along with keeping a small farm to support the family needs. He refused the use of modern equipment and did all the haying and milking by hand. He was a beekeeper for many years. He had a passion for reading for self-education and acquired a vast wealth of knowledge, particularly in science. During his retirement, he built beautiful, hand-carved musical instruments even though he had no musical training to play them. He was a member of the Plymouth Church.

He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Ida M. MacRabie in Feburary of 1998; a brother, Robert MacRabie and daughter, Mary E. MacRabie and a son, Randell C. MacRabie.

Survivors include five daughters, Priscilla and her husband Steven R. Pickwick of Franklin, Ruth and her husband Gary Arnold of Schenevus, Barbra and her husband Richard Groat of Sidney Center, Corinna Atwood of Herkimer and Patricia Kirk of Schenectady. He is also survived by five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Helena and Richard Brown of Wingdale, Hilda Shaver of Warsaw, Va., Hope and Alfred Brown of Farnham, Va., Pearl and Larry Lilly of Derby, Conn. and Ethel (Peg) Odendahl of Mocksville, N.C. Other survivors include several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He had a special place in his heart for Patrick T. Darling of Otego.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Ouleout Cemetery in Franklin with the Rev. Delbert Ripley officiating.

Arrangements are by Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock.
