Edward J. Healy
HARPERSFIELD — Edward J. Healy, 62, of Route 23, Oneonta Road, Harpersfield died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 29, 1936, in New York City, the son of Matthew and Catherine (Carney) Healy.

Ed was married to Joan Roddy on Sept. 25, 1965 in Flushing, Queens.

Ed graduated from Xavier High School in New York City and received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Manhattan College at Riverdale. After college he served both on active duty and reserve with the United States Air Force.

Ed was employed for 35 years by the New York City Housing Authority and retired in May 1997.

He has lived in Harpersfield for the past 15 years, having moved here from Baldwin, Long Island.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Healy of Harpersfield; a daughter, Jamie Healy of Portland, Ore.; sons, Robert Healy of Burlington, Vt., and Matthew Healy of Oneonta; sisters, Jean Weaver of Douglaston, Long Island and Catherine Aldinger of Southhold, Long Island; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Frances Farrell.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Florence E. Jordan
ONEONTA — Florence E. Jordan, 86, of Oneonta died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta after a brief illness.

She was born on April 30, 1912, in Emmons, the daughter of William and Florence (Johnson) Hungerford.

She married John Jordan in Oneonta on Nov. 30, 1931. Mr. Jordan died in 1996.

Mrs. Jordan was a lifelong area resident and was a former employee of Hartwick College and Bresee's Oneonta Department Store.

She was a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta.

She is survived by three sons, Russell I. Jordan of Conklin, Ronald C. Jordan of Baltimore, Md., and Albert J. Jordan of Mesa, Ariz.; six great-grandchildren and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was predeceased by one son, Robert Jordan, in 1995.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at Plains Cemetery with the Rev. Stephen Heiss, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Jason L. Lobdell
GILBERTSVILLE — Jason L. Lobdell, 26, petty officer second class, EO 2, Construction Battalion, United States Navy, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998 as the result of an automobile accident in Florida.

Prior to his enlistment in the U.S. Navy, he had lived in Gilbertsville.

He was born in Sidney, the son of Dorothy Dibble and the late Leon R. Lobdell.

Jason attended school at Gilbertsville Central School and high school at Morris Central School, graduating with the Class of 1990.

He was active in the Boy Scouts and played varsity football and basketball while in high school.

He had been in the U.S. Navy for more than six years and was currently attached to Cecil Field in Altoona, Fla. as a heavy equipment operator with the "C.B.s"

He is survived by his beloved mother, Dorothy Dibble and his beloved stepfather, Everest Dibble Sr. of Gilbertsville; four brothers, Jeffrey G. Pedersen and his wife Laurie of Gilbertsville, Jerry E. Pedersen and his wife Julie of Morris, Jon E. Lobdell of Unadilla and Everest Dibble Jr. and his wife Patricia of Gilbertsville; two sisters, Beth Norris and her husband Jack of South Haven, Kan. and Joanna Lobdell and her fiancee Ken Ballard of Morris; a maternal grandmother, Gertrude Hoag of Morris; uncles, Stewart Lobdell of Otego and Richard Hoag of Oneonta; nieces and nephews, Kristy, Justin, Jennifer and Jared Pedersen, Zachery, Jeremy and Tyler Norris and Gregory Lobdell.

Other special people in Jason's life were Scott Anderson, Julia Stanford and Jeffrey Stanford. Also surviving are several stepnieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Jim Pedersen, and his father, Leon.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998 at 1 p.m. in the Gilbertsville Presbyterian Church with Dr. Donald Boardman officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris with full military honors.

Calling hours will be from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998 at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Those who wish may make donations to the Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville in his memory.

Paula Gibbons Oquita
SAN DIEGO,  Calif. — Paula Gibbons Oquita, 69, died July 23, 1998, in San Diego,  Calif. after a massive stroke.

She was born on Oct. 10, 1928, in Oneonta, the daughter of Grace and Joseph Gibbons.

She married Manny Oquita.

Paula attended Hartwick College in Oneonta. She received a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in Chicago and a master's degree from Simmons College in Boston. She worked at the Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology libraries before moving to San Diego.

She was a research librarian. In San Diego, Paula developed a technical library for the Navy Fleet Computer Programming Center then started a technical library for Logicon and later became Logicon's security manager. She was employed by Logicon at the time of her death.

Paula excelled in community planning and in devising solutions to difficult community planning problems. In 1976, she became the first member and chairman of the Scripps Ranch Planning Group and engineered the preparation and approval of the community plan, which shaped the Scripps Ranch community. This community plan was of such excellence and content that it received the prestigious Orchid Award in 1978, and then served as a model of what a community plan should be for all of the city of San Diego.

Paula did not rest on her laurels but assumed the same position and role in the development of the community plan for Miramar Ranch North. Both community plans were cited by the city for their excellence and content and have served the test of time well for the total community.

Based on her experience and knowledge of community planning, in 1980, Paula was appointed by then mayor Pete Wilson to the San Diego City Planning Commission charged with reviewing all planning activities of the city. Again Paula excelled as a member and chairman serving a total of eight years.

As a Scripps Ranch resident, Paula was a communtiy activist, always striving for the best for Scripps Ranch and then for all new communities. She was not only a steadfast and informed planner but also an able administration and coordination specialist. Paula was honored as Scripps Ranch Citizen of the Year and received a very special recognition of interest in the community and in preserving the environment when a hiking trail in the Scripps Ranch community was named The Paula Oquita Hiking Trail. This is the only trail so designated in the Scripps Ranch area.

Paula is survived by her husband, Manuel Oquita; son, Matthew Oquita; daughter, Lisa Wilkins and grandchildren, Lauren and Rory Oquita, Ryan and Zachary Wilkins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Donald Gibbons.

Memorial services were held in San Diego. Graveside services were in Laurens with the Rev. Wayne F. Sanders officiating.

Her remains were buried at the Laurens Village Cemetery, Laurens.

Marie T. Roberts
ARKVILLE — Marie T. Roberts, 80, of Arkville died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at the Benedictine Hospital, Kingston.

She was born June 29, 1918, in Maybrook, the daughter of John Slattery and Loretta Krom.

She married John B. Roberts. He died on Dec. 7, 1995.

She was an Avon representative for 26½ years.

She is survived by two daughters, Jacklyn Marie  Johnson of Arkville and Shirley Ann Bailey of Burlington, N.C.; one son, Gary Lewis of Roxbury; one stepdaughter, Mary Mead of Roxbury; one stepson, Edward John Roberts Sr. of Fleischmanns; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one stepdaughter, Gloria Roberts, who died in 1955.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with the Rev. Dr. George Carpenter officiating.
Burial will be at the Margaretville Cemetery in Margaretville.

Calling hours were held on Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions in memory of Marie T. Roberts can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Hugh C. Smith
SIDNEY — Hugh C. Smith, 74, of Sidney passed away Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at his home.

He was born Nov. 11, 1923 to the late E. Sydney and Gertrude Tompkins Smith.

Hugh married Joyce Smith on March 6, 1946, in Norfolk, Va.

Upon graduation from high school, Hugh enlisted into the United States Navy. He served on the Anzio, in the South Pacific during World War II, and the Oriskany during the Korean Conflict.

In 1964, Hugh entered the active Navy Fleet Reserve and was a Chief Aviation Boatswain's Mate when he retired in 1972.

He was a member of the Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post No. 183, Sidney and the Navy Fleet Reserve Association. Hugh was a member and past house chairman of the Sidney Golf and Country Club.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Joyce Smith of Sidney; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Carolyn Smith of Skaneateles; grandchildren, Zachary and Rachel Smith of Skaneateles; two sisters and brother-in-laws, Arlene and Richard Arrandale of Sidney and Jean and Louis Mazzarella of Sidney.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne Burnett of the United Methodist Church, Afton, officiating.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Ronald M. Stagg
SALEM, Va. — Ronald Montgomery Stagg, Ph. D. of Salem, Va., died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998.
He was born in Brooklyn to the late Jeanette R. and Glendore H. Stagg.

Dr. Stagg was retired from Hartwick College, Oneonta, after 30 years of teaching with the rank professor emeritus. Before this he taught at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and Drew University in New Jersey. While at Hartwick College as coordinator of the Medical Technology and Allied Health Program, chairman of the Division of Life Sciences and northeastern district director for Beta-Beta-Beta Biological Society.

Together with his wife, Julie, they spearheaded the creation of the Center for Continuing Adult Learning at both Hartwick College and the State University College at Oneonta campuses.

Since moving to Salem, Va., he taught as an adjunct at Roanoke College. Dr. Stagg earned his bachelor's degree at Tusculum College, Tennessee, a master's degree at Brooklyn College, and a Ph. D. at Rutgers University, New Jersey.

He was a United States Navy World War II veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Julie Thomas Stagg, and his five children, John Lonsolale Stagg and his wife, Susan, Keith Winfield Stagg and his wife, Judi, Kelly Stagg DeMaso and her husband, Bill, Tracey Nanette Stagg and Travis Musser Stagg; his granchildren, Greg, Christine, David and Alyssa Stagg; and his three nieces.

A memorial service will follow at Hartwick College in early October.

Ruth J. Maloney
ONEONTA — Ruth J. Maloney, 75, of Oneonta died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
Maloney

She was born on June 24, 1923, in East Meredith, the daughter of Paul and Mary (Hansen) Jensen.

She married John J. Maloney in Oneonta in 1946. He died in 1972.

Ruth proudly served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 as a First Class Seaman.

She and her husband owned and operated the J.J. Maloney Company, Inc. in Oneonta. After her husband's death, she assumed responsibility of the business and later retired in 1988.

Ruth was an active member of St. Mary's Church and served as past president of the Rosary Society. She also held the office of president in Church Women United. She was involved in the business community as well. She was a past president of the Oneonta Chamber of Commerce and the New York State Candy and Tobacco Association. Ruth was an honary member in the Elks Club and was a member of the VFW.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Lisa Maloney of Otego; her daughter, Mary Maloney of Maryland; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Barbara Jensen of Groton; her sister, Edith Geilen of Hermosa Beach,  Calif.; and her two grandchildren, Jeffrey and Ashley Downey. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Paul Jensen in 1946.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeal Home, Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.
