Rev. Dr. John Dillenbeck Breish
MOHAWK — Rev. Dr. John Dillenbeck Breish, 81, of 4 Henry St., Mohawk, formerly of Cooperstown, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at Faxton Hospital, Utica, after a brief illness.

In Virgil, on Oct. 4, 1941, he was married to Betty Rhoades.

Following his honorable discharge in September of 1946, he returned to Syracuse where he resumed his education at Syracuse University. In 1952, he received his master's degree in Education and his doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Following his graduation he served the VA hospital in Chillicothe, Ohio. Upon returning to Syracuse in 1953, with his family he was employed by the VA Hospital until 1961. He and his family then moved to Cooperstown where he was employed by the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital as clinical psychologist until 1968.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty, of 57 years; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Virginia Breish of Williamsburg, Mass., David and Georgia Breish of Houston,  Texas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Dominick DeGeorge of Mohawk, and Carol and Donald Todd Weller of Gansvoort; nine grandchildren, John D. Breish II, Andrew, William, David, Jonathan and Eric Breish, Robert Ostrander Jr., and Katherine and Rebecca Weller; three great-grandchildren; and one niece, Denise Welch Sullivan of Rochester.

He was predeceased by his only sister, Beryl Jane Breish Welch in 1992.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at 1:30 p.m., at the Graves-Applegate Day Funeral Home, 48 E. Main St., Mohawk with Pastor Jack Cogar officiating. Interment will be in Mohawk Cemetery, Mohawk.

Dr. Breish was a wonderful family man and loving supportive Christian husband and father deeply revered by his adoring wife and children, as well as highly regarded by his peers.

He was an avid tennis player from his youth and regularly enjoyed the companionship of his tennis partners.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Faxton Hospital Foundation or the American Cancer Society. Donation envelopes will be available at the Graves-Applegate Day Funeral Home, Mohawk, N.Y. 13407.

Alva L. Cohn
SCHENEVUS — Alva L. Cohn, 80, of Schenevus died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta after a short illness.

He was born on Feb. 12, 1918, in East Worcester, the son of Orra and Leona (Clapper) Cohn.

He married Freda M. Watson on March 13, 1937, in Albany. She predeceased him on Feb. 29, 1984.

Mr. Cohn was a lifelong area resident. He was employed with the D&H Railroad for 17 years and then with the New York state Highway Department of Transportation in Maryland as a supervisor foreman, retiring at the age of 62.

Mr. Cohn enjoyed music, especially playing the piano, guitar and harmonica.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Mary Cohn of St. Clarie, Mich.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Elanor and Arthur Spranger of Oneonta, Barbara and Richard Peet of Oneonta, and Elaine and Marc Bresee of Milford Center; grandchildren, Roger Cohn and his wife, Laura, of Ohio, Ronald Spranger and his wife, Kristen, of Schenevus, Kelly Benjamin of Oneonta, Tammy Colegrove and her friend Dan Carey of Savannah, Jo-Ann Sakowski and her husband, Mike, of Savannah, David D. Doig and his wife, Darleen, of Savannah, Corinne Bresee of Milford Center; stepgrandchildren, John Bresee and his wife, Becky, of California, and Kimberly Bresee of Alexander, Va.; eight granchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Maryland Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in memory of Mr. Cohn to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 272, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155; or the American Lung Association of Mid-New York, 311 Turner St., Utica, N.Y. 13501.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Delores Santarone
HAMILTON, Mont. — Delores "Dee" Santarone, 66, of Hamilton, Mont., died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, north of Darby from injuries sustained in a car accident.

She was born on Aug. 2, 1932, in Sayre, Pa., the daughter of the late Donald and Kathryn Chaffee Steele.

Dee graduated from Southside High School in Elmira and went to work at Bendix in Elmira. She Later transferred to Baltimore Bendix Division.

She met Pasquale "Pat" Santarone who worked for the Baltimore Orioles. They were married on Dec. 26, 1962, in Elmira. Upon Dee's retirement from Bendix and Pat's retirement from the Orioles the couple relocated to the Bitterrot Valley settling in Hamilton, Mont., in 1991.

Dee was active in the Bitterroot Quilters Guild, MDM-Hospice of the Bitterroot, and an active member of the Hamilton Golf Club. She enjoyed bowling with the "High Rollers."

She was loved by all and will be missed dearly, her beloved dog Katie misses and searches for her.

Surviving include her husband of 35 years, Pat, of Hamilton, Mont.; her daughter, Debbie Draxler and grandson, Stephen, of Susanville,  Calif.; her son, Douglas R. Draxler and his wife, Kathy, and grandson, John W., of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; her sister, Elsie Coburn of Gilbertsville; and numerous nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Cremation will take place and the urn will be placed in the family plot at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery in Elmira.

Family suggests memorials to MDM-Hospice of the Bitterroot, 1200 Westwood Dr., Hamilton, Mont. 59840.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton, Mont.

Thomas W. Spencer
ONEONTA — Mr. Thomas W. Spencer, 81, of Oneonta died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

He was born July 13, 1917, in Oneonta, the son of George W. and Annie E. (Covell) Spencer.

Tom was twice married. His first wife was the former Dorothy Dixson. They were married on Aug. 17, 1947, at the Elm Park United Methodist Church by the Rev. Harold Buckingham. She died Jan. 24, 1986. His second wife was the former Elizabeth Anna (Pitt) Johns whom he married June 24, 1988, in Davenport. She died May 27, 1992.

Tom was a car inspector for the D&H Railroad in Oneonta. He had worked for the D&H from May 18, 1943, to Aug. 11, 1977, for a total of 34 years service.

Living in Oneonta most of his life, Tom had also lived in Carbondale, Pa., with his family from 1923-1932 and worked for Bendix Corp. in Sidney from 1941-1943.

He was a 55-year member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta, the BRCA (Brotherhood Railway Car Inspectors of America) and the Otsego County Senior Citizens.

He is survived by his stepdaughter and her husband, Donna and Marvin Mulford of Fly Creek, stepson and his wife, Raymond and Susan Johns of Schoharie; five granddaughters and their spouses, Amy Mulford of Fly Creek, Kimberley and Jeffrey Worden of Davenport, Tracy and Patrick Babbie of Plattsburgh, and Renee and April Johns of Cobleskill; a sister-in-law, Shirly Spencer of Oneonta; nephew, Gary Emrich of Oneonta; niece, Marie Wayman of Grand Gorge; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, George Frank Spencer who died March 15, 1996.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta with the Rev. Stephen Heiss, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church of Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday evening, Sept. 22, 1998, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Irving W. Cole
SIDNEY — Irving W. Cole, 74, of Sidney died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at the Skilled Nursing Center, The Hospital, in Sidney.

He was born on March 20, 1924, in Franklin, the son of Elmer Bartlett and Marion (Bisselle) Cole.

He married Nellie Oliver on Oct. 14, 1944, in Oneonta.

Mr. Cole was a member of the Community Bible Church in Franklin. He was a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose. He was also a member of the Franklin Fire Department and held various offices. He was the chief when the Franklin Central School burned in 1969.

He owned the former Buster Hyzer farm, at which time he was a member of the Eastern Milk Producers. During this time, while serving on many committees, he was also a state deligate.

Mr. Cole was a bus driver the the Franklin Central Schools. He enjoyed his association with the students and rarely missed sporting events or band concerts during his nine years of employment. He and his wife chaperoned many school activities. He took great pride in the Franklin School system from which his parents, himself, and his children graduated.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nellie Oliver Cole of Sidney; his three children and their spouses, Barry W. and Marie Cole of Sidney, Barbara Ritchey of Sidney, and Janice and Donald Mushtare of Hull, Mass.; his grandchildren, Jaime and Lori Cole, Robert and Kim Fralicker, and Cari and Jodi Ritchey. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at 1 p.m., at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Walter Schlundt, pastor of the Franklin Community Bible Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Fire Department or The Patio Fund care of Hospital Guild, 45 Pearl St., Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nellie Oliver Cole of Sidney; his three children and their spouses, Barry W. and Marie Cole of Sidney, Barbara Ritchey of Sidney, and Janice and Donald Mushtare of Hull, Mass.; his grandchildren, Jaime and Lori Cole, Robert and Kim Fralicker, and Cari and Jodi Ritchey. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Edward Hyland Sr.
MERIDALE — Edward J. Hyland Sr., 86, of Houghtaling Hollow (town of Meredith), Meridale, a 25-year area resident, died Monday afternoon, Sept. 21, 1998, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, following an extended illness.

He was born Feb. 28, 1912, in Staten Island, the son of Thomas F. and Sarah O'Neill Hyland.

A World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Navy, overseas.

He married Florence Strachan on April 16, 1994, in Staten Island, where he was a longtime resident.

Ed was employed as a meter reader with Consolidated-Edison Electric Co. for 43 years, retiring in 1971.

He moved to Meridale in 1973, and had been a resident of Countryside Care Center for the past five years.

He was a member of Local 3, I.B.E.W. and a charter member of Immaculate Conception Church Men's Club, in Staten Island. Since coming to Delaware County, he was a member of Donald W. Gleason Post 190 American Legion, Delhi and Davenport Memorial Post 487 V.F.W and Meridale Senior Citizens.

Ed was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Florence S. Hyland at home; five children, Thomas F. Hyland of Meridale, Sarah O. Hyland of Pembroke, N.H., Edward J. Hyland Jr. of New York City, David W. Hyland of Oneonta, and John L. Hyland of Webster, N.H.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Hyland of Staten Island; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience today at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. and a vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at the Chapel Of St. Theresa Of The Little Flower, Davenport Center, where Ed was a parishioner, the Rev. Fr. Joseph Manerowski of Delhi presiding, and burial will follow in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Meridale, where military honors will be accorded by Post 190.

Memorial contributions may be made to Meridale Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.
