Natalie R. Karker
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Natalie R. Karker, 75, of Little Lakes Road, died on Tuesday morning, Sept. 22, 1998, in her home.

She was born on April 9, 1923, in Richfield Springs, a daughter of the late Harry and Agnes Light Robbins.

A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, she was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School.

On Dec. 28, 1945, she married Francis Karker in Hudson. For many years they owned and operated a dairy farm on the Allens Lake Road.

Surviving, besides her husband of 52 years, Francis, are two sons and their wives, Jon and Linda Karker of Worcester, and Jeffrey and Karen Karker of Cazenovia; a daughter, Sandra Metcalf and her husband, William, of Cambridge, Wis.; one sister, Beverly Robbins of North Carolina; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Michelle Karker, both of Cazenovia; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Pardi this past June.

Funeral service will be on Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs. Interment will follow in Schuyler Lake Cemetery.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Herkimer County Hospice Memorial Program. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Elizabeth P. Riley
ONEONTA — Elizabeth P. "Betty" Riley, 77, of Oneonta died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 16, 1921, in Vinita, Okla., the daughter of Edgar and Lena (Roberts) Phillips.

She was married to Thomas Riley who died in 1970.

A veteran of World War II, she served with the United States Army as a WAC assigned to the European-African Middle Eastern Theater, where she was the recipient of three Bronze Battle Stars.

Betty was employed for 30 years by Jamesway in Oneonta, and retired in 1994 as a supervisor.

She is survived by her daughter, Debra A. Riley of Oneonta; and a sister, Helen Priest of Columbus,  Texas. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

It was Betty's wishes that she be cremated with no calling hours or funeral service. However, a graveside service of her cremains will be at a later date in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, with a time to be announced.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Theodore A. Dezso Sr.
FRANKLIN — Mr. Theodore A. Dezso Sr., 91, of the town of Franklin died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at his residence.

He was born June 26, 1907, in Connecticut, the son of Steven and Julia Dezso.

He married the former Virginia Platt on Nov. 10, 1962, in Delhi.

Ted was a deputy sheriff for the Delaware County Sheriff's Department for 13 years.

He had lived in this area for the past 50 years and was a member of the Oneonta Elks Club. Ted was the youngest of 14 children.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; a son, Theodore Dezso Jr. of Bridgeport, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Gerald (Roberta) "Bobbie" Furgerson of Treadwell; two grandchildren, Theodore Dezso III and Kimberly Lucas of Bridgeport, Conn.

He was predeceased by all his brothers and sisters.

A service of rememberance will be held by the family at their convenience at Davenport Cemetery, Davenport. Ted was cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

William Rosner
CHESAPEAKE, Va. — William Rosner, 81, of 4400 block of Deborah Court, Chesapeake, Va., died on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998.

He married Marion Rosner, who survives.

He was a retired veterinarian.

He was a member of the Gomley Chesed Synagogue, Portsmouth, Va.

He is survived by his wife, Marion Rosner; his two sons, Jeffry Rosner of Carrollton, Va., and Ira Rosner of Warwick; two sisters, Sylvia Dryfuss of Philadelphia, Pa., and Norma Fishman of Los Angeles,  Calif.; and four grandchildren, Stephen, Benjamin, Sarah and Arielle Rosner.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at 1 p.m. in Gomley Chesed Synagogue by Rabbi Philip S. Krohn. Burial will be in Gomley Chesed Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Gomley Chesed Congregation or the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are by Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, Va.

Paul VanValkenburg
EAST GUILFORD — Paul H. VanValkenburg, 64, of East Guilford passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, Sept. 24, 1998.

He was born Aug. 8, 1934, in Stilesville. Paul was the son of the late Benjamin and Viola Holmes VanValkenburg.

On Oct. 27, 1956, he married Jean Pratt in Harpursville.

Second to his family, his 25 years as a volunteer in the Sidney Emergency Squad No. 1, including the privilege of serving as its captain, was the most important part of his life.

He served in numerous organizations during the 42 years of being in Sidney. Paul was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman until his health failed.

He loved working at Fairbanks Pharmacy, Inc. with his brother Elwin, and most recently with his nephew David. Paul was employed there from January 1957, until his retirement in May 1995.

He always took time to talk with everyone and took interest in them.

He was a member of the East Guilford Presbyterian Church, East Guilford.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jean VanValkenburg of East Guilford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Connie VanValkenburg and children, Jason, Ryan, Holly and Danny, all of Elk River, Minn., and Daniel and Sally VanValkenburg and children, Heather and Mathew, all of Farmington, Minn.; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Jeffrey Vance and children, Lindsay and Stephanie, of Afton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Elwin and Priscilla VanValkenburg of Sidney, and James Francis and Madeline VanValkenburg of St. Johnsville; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Elmer "Marty" Martin of Austin,  Texas; and three cousins, eight nephews and eight nieces.

His grandchildren were the apples of his eye.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney with the Rev. Helen Havlik and the Rev. Douglas Horne officiating. Burial will follow in the East Guilford Cemetery, East Guilford.

Friends are invited to call Saturday at the funeral chapel. The family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon till service time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the East Guilford Cemetery Association or to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney.

Funeral arrangements are by the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Nelson E. Steere
HARTWICK — Nelson E. Steere, 81, of Hartwick died Wednesday evening, Sept. 23, 1998, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Aug. 19, 1917, in Hartwick, a son of Kendrick and Mary Catherine (Elwood) Steere.

He married Margaret Schweitzer on June 22, 1946, at St. Mary's Church in Rahway, N.J.

A native of Hartwick, Nelson graduated from Hartwick High School in 1936. After high school he moved to Canajoharie, where he worked for Smith's Meat Market, which was owned by his uncle.

On June 11, 1941, Nelson was inducted into the United States Army. He served in Headquarters Company II Army Corps, and was honorably discharged on July 17, 1945, after attaining the rank of sergeant. Following his Army service he returned to Canajoharie to work with his uncle, eventually acquiring Smith's Meat Market when his uncle died. In 1969, he sold the meat market and moved back to his native Hartwick where he worked for Victory Markets until his retirement in the early 1980s.

Nelson was a member of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown and the Hartwick American Legion Post No. 1567.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret, of Hartwick; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda Winsman of Fultonville, Shirley Steere of Tucson, Ariz., Lorraine "Lori" and David Butler of Hartwick, and Jacqueline "Jackie" and Michael Earle of Bradenton, Fla.; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Lyle N. and Elsie Steere of Christian Hill, and Anne Steere of Mohawk; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one son-in-law, Richard Winsman, who died in 1994, and one brother, Stanley Steere, who died in 1970.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at Hartwick Christian Church with the Rev. Laverne Saxer, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartwick Center Union Cemetery on Hinman Hollow Road in Hartwick.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Hartwick Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 208, Hartwick, N.Y. 13348.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Lina Barnes
SIDNEY — Mrs. Lina Barnes, 72, of Sidney, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at her home.

She was born May 5, 1926, in Gilbertsville to the late Alvin and Margaret Watts Austin.

Lina married Alva Westcott, who predeceased her in 1948. She then married Wilbur Barnes on Dec. 4, 1949, in New Berlin. He predeceased her on Nov. 30, 1987.

For several years Mr. and Mrs. Barnes operated a dairy farm in Sidney. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sidney and a dedicated Sunday school teacher for several years. Mrs. Barnes was an active member of the Sidney Senior Citizens and avid pinochle player.

Lina is survived by her loyal dog and companion, Molly; two sons and daughters-in-law, David B. and Debbie Barnes of Masonville, and Michael E. and Tammy Barnes of Rockdale; a stepson and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Glen and Mary Barnes of Whitesville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda A. and Louis  Johnson of Otego and Patricia J. Barnes of Mount Upton; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Esther Ingalls-Steffen and her husband, Louis, of Franklin, Florence Musk of New Berlin, and Irene and William Phillips of Sidney; grandchildren, Scott and Mary Archibald, Jamie Archibald, Kimberly Archibald, Doug Barnes and Heaven Wilson, Deanna Barnes and Joel Bates, Dale Barnes, Jessica, Jacob and Jed Barnes, and Debby and Mark Gerl; three great-grandchildren, Ryan and Damion Archibald and Nathan Gerl; her extended family, Gail and Harry Knapp of Sidney, and Arnold Rutenber of  Texas; brothers-in-law, John Phillips of Sidney and Ernie Westcott of Franklin; and a sister-in-law, Alice Wilber of Tennessee.

Lina was predeceased by a brother, Henry Austin, and a sis"-ter, Ethel Ingalls.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at the First Baptist Church, River Street, Sidney, at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. David Fraher will officiate.

Friends may call Sunday after 5 p.m. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m. at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta or the First Baptist Church, River Street, Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. of Sidney.

Gerald E. Mulford
HARTWICK — Mr. Gerald E. Mulford, 91, of Hartwick, passed away Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Mulford was born in Windham on July 14, 1907, a son of T. Dana and Jessie (Finch) Mulford.

After attending one-room schools in the Windham area, he graduated from Delhi Ag and Tech for agriculture. He began farming using horses and enjoyed watching the evolution of farm equipment. Mr. Mulford worked at the Busch Estate as a groundskeeper after his retirement from farming as well as helping local farmers.

Gerald married Leta G. VanValkenburgh on Oct. 3, 1929. His favorite hobby was genealogy but he also enjoyed beekeeping and was an avid reader. He also enjoyed repairing things and working with his hands.

Mr. Mulford is survived by a daughter, Marion Pogue of Hartwick; a son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Donna Mulford of Fly Creek; a brother and his wife, Wesley and Margaret Mulford of Windham; two sisters-in-law, Elnora Mulford of Windham and Isabell Moseman of Stamford; seven grandchildren, Vince Aspinwall of Broadalbin, Joyce Clements of Richfield, Karen Garvin in the U.S. Navy in Corpus Christi,  Texas, Loretta Ripley of Camden, Maine, Jeanette and Jason Mulford of Milford, and Amy Mulford of Fly Creek; 14 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. John Young, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Burlington, officiating.

Calling hours will be on Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, from 1-2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will follow at the Hartwick Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown; or to the Fly Creek Emergency Squad in Fly Creek.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
