Ruth Utter Smith
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Ruth Janette Utter Smith, 81, formerly of Oneonta,
died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 27, 1998, at Holy Cross Care Center in South Bend, Ind.

Mrs. Smith was born in Oneonta on Jan. 14, 1917, a daughter of the late Clifford and Lula Burrell Utter.

She was a homemaker, a 1934 gradaute of Oneonta High School and a 1938 graduate of Hartwick College.

Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her husband, Leonard B. Smith, former vice president of Monroe Community College in Rochester.

Surviving are two sons, Peter Smith of Pittsburg, Pa., and Andrew Smith of South Bend, Ind.; one daughter, Gretchen Altman of Sumter, S.C.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday afternoon, Oct. 1, 1998, at 3 p.m. graveside in Plain Cemetery in Oneonta. There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to Hartwick College Alumi Fund, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Mrs. Smith. She always loved Hartwick College and the Oneonta area.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Inez Sandike
UNADILLA — Mrs. Inez Sandike, 86, of Unadilla died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born, Oct. 20, 1911, in Franklin, the daughter of George and Mary (Harder) Littlebrant.

She was married to Augustine Sandike, June 9, 1934, in Unadilla. Mr. Sandike died Oct. 1. 1985.

She was a resident of Unadilla from 1934 to November 1986, when she relocated to Garden View Manor of Otego.

For many years she owned and operated the Sandike Tourist Home in Unadilla.

She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church of Unadilla and the Unadilla Women's Club.

Mrs. Sandike is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Martha Sandike of Oneonta, and a niece, Vivian Finch of Sidney.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, at Evergreen Cemetery, Otego, with the Rev. Ward H. Letteney, of Unadilla, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Francis A. Hawver
UNADILLA — Francis A. Hawver, 86, of 44 Clifton St., Unadilla, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born, June 12, 1912, in Schenevus, the son of Leroy and Angelia (West) Hawver.

He has been a resident of Unadilla for several years and was a retired employee of Amphenol Corp. of Sidney. He was also manager of Hillcrest Roller Skating Rink of Sidney at one time.

He was a former member of the Unadilla Fire Department.

Mr. Hawver is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James L. and Veronica La Verne Hawver of Hawaii; two grandsons, James M. Hawver of Oneonta and Scott F. Hawver of Hawaii; a special friend, Martha Dann of Sidney; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held in the Schenevus Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad or the Unadilla Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Kathryn C. Nielsen
CASSELBERRY Fla. — Kathryn C. Nielsen, 84, of Wild Fox Drive, Casselberry, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998.

Mrs. Kathryn C. Nielsen, formerly of Cliff, Goodyear Lake, was a retired medical secretary from M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born in Oswegatchie, she moved to central Florida in 1979.

She was a member of Tuscawilla United Methodist Church, Mary Martha Group, R.S.V.P. Volunteer at the Casselberry Senior Center, Super Senior, and S&S Group.

She is survived by three daughters, Dennis and Marion Hoobler of Norfolk, Neb., Christine Nielsen of Winter Park, Fla., and Judith A. Nielsen of Casselberry, Fla.; two grandchildren, Rebecca Hoobler of Elkhorn, Neb., and Jeffrey Hoobler of Lincoln, Neb.

Arrangements are by the Woodlawn Carey Hand Funeral Home, Longwood, Fla.

Mary Ferguson
ONEONTA — Mrs. Mary (Blasetti) Ferguson, 74, of Southside, Oneonta died suddenly Tuesday evening, Sept. 29, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, Oneonta.
She was born April 28, 1924, in Oneonta, the daughter of Serafino and Saveria (Romiti) Blasetti.

She married Dormon D. Ferguson on Feb. 8, 1952, in Oneonta. Mr. Ferguson died Oct. 15, 1988.

Mary was a lifelong area resident of Oneonta and a 1942 graduate of Oneonta High School.

Mary had worked for the MICA Plant and Oneonta Glove Factory during World War II. During her lifetime she was also employed at the former Triangle Shoestore, the former Carl's Drugs and the F and N Burt Co. Oneonta.

She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta.

She is survived by three sons and daughter-in-laws, Richard and Donna Ferguson of Morris, Dennis and Wendy Ferguson of Cooperstown, and John Ferguson of Southside Oneonta; one stepson and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Louene Ferguson of Inglewood,  Calif.; one daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Louis Shields of Oneonta; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Herbert (Barbara) Blanchard of Oneonta; three brothers, Enrico Blasetti of Oneonta, Carmen Blasetti of Oneonta, and Fred Blasetti of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister, Mrs. Lee (Irene) Starkweather of Albany; she also survived by several stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-granchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Peter Blasetti and a sister, Anna Primiani.

At Mary's request a private funeral service will be held at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Mary requested that expressions of sympathy be made to St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1818, Memphis, Tenn. 38101-9903.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Alice Ann Gurley
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Alice Ann Gurley, 88, formerly of Prattsville died Wednesday morning, Sept. 30, 1998, at The Meadows.

She was born on May 22, 1910, in Ralphton, Pa., a daughter of Frank C. Sr. and Sophie (Yurenec) Gorence.

She married Jack Gurley in 1927. Mr. Gurley died on April 9, 1978.

As a young woman, Mrs. Gurley moved to the Cooperstown region. She later moved to Prattsville where she made her home for 40 years. She was known for her fine cooking, and for 25 years she owned and operated Prattsville Tavern with her husband, Jack. For the past five years she had lived at the home of her daughter, Jean, in Maine, until being admitted to The Meadows in July of 1998.

For many years Mrs. Gurley was a member of the Pratt Rock Auxiliary of the Prattsville Fire Department and the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Virgil E. Deyo American Legion Post No. 1327 in Prattsville.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Jean G. and John Cole of Brunswick, Maine; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Virginia Gurley of Prattsville; her eight sisters and one brother-in-law, Mary Roberts, Sophie Gus, Agnes Van Dyke and Gladys Davidson, all of Cooperstown, Anne Sugarick and Louise Kubis, both of Schenevus, Caroline and John Schemm of Milford, and Jenny Calhoun of Nampa, Idaho; eight grandchildren, Tracy Longo of Cohasset, Mass., Sam Patton of Charlestown, Mass., Christopher Patton of Lexington, Mass., Robert Patton of Portland, Maine, Robert Gurley Jr. of Prattsville, Marcia Tocci of Mullica Hill, N.J., Nancy Hodge of Pittsford, and Ursula Lindley of Rockford, Ill.; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Charles Gorence and Frank C. Gorence.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown with the Rev. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Friday evening, Oct. 2, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. when Mrs. Gurley's family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Pratt Rock Auxiliary of the Prattsville Fire Department, Prattsville, N.Y. 12468.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

William E. Greiner
FRANKLIN — William E. Greiner, 81, of R.D. No. 1, Franklin, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

He was born April 13, 1917, in Franklin, the son of Harry and Mary (Walley) Greiner.

He was first married to Clara Rhinebeck on Dec. 2, 1944, and following her death in March 1987, he was married to Jeri Lou Harrington in December 1987.

He has been a Franklin area resident most of his life. He served in the CCC and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army. He was a retired 30-year employee of Amphenol Corp. of Sidney, and until 1990, for 10-years delivered newspapers for the Press & Sun-Bulletin of Binghamton and The Daily Star of Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Jeri Lou Greiner of Franklin; three daughters and sons-in-laws, Mary and Earl Robinson of Viola, Ark., Joy and Robert Sutton of Sparkers, and Paula and Pete Gage of Davenport; two stepdaughters, Jennifer Ray and Melissa Ray of New Berlin; a sister, Anna Ruling of Sidney; a brother, Marvin Greiner of Oneonta; a grandson; two granddaughters; four great-grandsons; two stepgrandsons; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his sons, Richard and Robert Greiner; a sister, Goldie Lent; his brothers, Frank and Harry Greiner; and a grandson.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at East Sidney Union Cemetery, town of Sidney, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church of Unadilla, officiating.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, at their convenience and the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the William Greiner family would be appreciated.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Alberta J. Brooks
SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Alberta "Bert" Brooks, 74, of South New Berlin passed away Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, at the Skilled Nursing Facility, The Hospital, Sidney.

Bert was born Oct. 17, 1923, to the late Amos and Flora Fritts Ray in Richfield Springs.

She married Earl D. Brooks, Oct. 19, 1941, in Holmesville. Earl predeceased her on Dec. 28, 1997.

Bert was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, South New Berlin.

Bert is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law, Marie and David Pratt of South New Berlin, Linda and Norman Eastwood of South New Berlin, Wanda and George Deak of Waterville, Doris and Rich Hoag of South New Berlin, and Nancy Frankel of/JOneonta; two brothers and sister-in-law, William Ray of New/JLisbon, and Leon and Vivian Ray of Unadilla; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty Kennedy of Mohawk, Helen Smith of Madison, Sarah  Johnson of Mount Upton, Edna and Aaron Rogers of Norwich, Viola Crandall of Ithaca, and Mary and George Finch of Norwich; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Nelson Parks of Gilbertsville, officiating.

Friends may call Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, after 1 p.m. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad or the Fire Department.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Herbert Howland
MASONVILLE — Herbert Howland, 74, of Masonville passed away Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford.

Herbert was born Nov. 8, 1923, to the late June and Loretta Brown Howland in Tompkins.

He served in the United States Army during World War II.

Herbert was a member of the American Legion.

Herbert is survived by his friend and companion of 14 years, Esther Wilson of Masonville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and James Clouse of Livonia, Mich., and Jo-Ann and Keith Whitcomb of Danville, Ky.; sisters and brother-in-law, May Cummings of Bainbridge, and Madelene and Arnold Slade of Mount Upton; two grandchildren, Brandy and Todd Clouse; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 11 a.m. with the Rev. J. Alvin Mosher, of the Masonville Federated Church, officiating.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery, Walton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the New York State Veterans Home, 4211 State Highway 200, Oxford, N.Y. 13830.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.
