John G. Merrill
ROSCOE — John G. Merrill, 83, of Roscoe, a lifelong area resident, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at home.

The son of the late John P. and Antoinette Goetschius Merrill, he was born Sept. 23, 1915, at Horton Brook.

He had been a self-employed farmer and logger. For over 30 years he assisted his wife and family at Merrills Farm Vacation, as they hosted international guests.

He was a member and former board member of the United Church of Roscoe, Roscoe; a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Roscoe, Roscoe; a former member and past president of the Roscoe Central School Board of Education, having served for over 20 years; a former town of Colchester Town Justice and Town Board member, and had served for many years as town of Colchester assessor; he was a former member of the Cooks Falls-Horton Volunteer Fire Company, Cooks Falls; a member and past president of the Catskill Region Antique Automobile Club of America; and he was an avid bowler.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian E. Bowers Merrill, at home; his sons, John P. Merrill of Hamden, Malcolm W. Merrill of Centereach, and Arthur M. Merrill of Downsville; his daughters, Ellen M. Asprion, Bernita A. Bussfeld, and Elizabeth A. Hutchinson, all of Roscoe; his brothers, Philip H. Merrill of Delhi, Eugene M. Merrill of Roscoe, and Gerard B. Merrill of Binghamton; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Muriel E. Gilbert, a brother and four sisters.

Visitation will be Thursday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Avenue, Roscoe.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at the United Church of Roscoe, Roscoe with the Rev. Bridget Leconey and the Rev. Paul Cronin officiating.

Burial will be in Paige Cemetery, Downsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Church of Roscoe or the Roscoe Kiwanis Club.

Matilda I. Alger
ONEONTA — Matilda I. "Tilly" Alger, 63, of Davenport, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at her residence, after a lengthy illness.

She was born July 7, 1935, in Oneonta, the daughter of Paul and Agnes (Henning) Alger.

She served with the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict and worked for the New York State Telephone Company for 17 years.

For the past 20 years she had been a nurse at the Oaknoll Naval Hospital in Oakland,  Calif., until her recent retirement.

She was a member of the St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Robert (Joan) Mclean of Arnold,  Calif.; one nephew, Robert Mclean of San Lorenzo,  Calif.; and a niece, Julie Knight of Castro Valley,  Calif.; and a grandniece, Katherine Mclean of San Lorenzo,  Calif.; and several cousins.

Private funeral services will be held at a later date, at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Dietz St., Oneonta.

Marcella Heidt
GRAND GORGE — Marcella Heidt, 84, of Grand Gorge, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

She was born Jan. 9, 1914, in Germany, the daughter of Michael George Heidt and Cecile Onkel.

She worked in the packaging department at Houbigant Company in Long Island and New Jersey.

She moved from Jamaica to  Jefferson and then to Grand Gorge.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Stamford.

She is survived by eight nieces and nephews; 17 great-nieces and nephews; and 7 great-great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at 7 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Stamford with the Rev. Robert M. Duchow officiating.

Burial will be in the Pinelawn Memorial Cemetery, Farmingdale, Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at 1 p.m.

Calling hours are on Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Funeral arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Main Street, Roxbury.

Dr. Neil Rothman
SIDNEY — Dr. Neil Rothman, 56, of Valley View Apartments, Sidney, a prominent Sidney professional and Delaware County Republican Party Chairman passed away peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, at the home of his sister in Lawrence.

Memorial services will be held at noon on Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, from the First Congregational Church, corner of Bridge and Main streets, Sidney.

Burial services were held on Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, at the New Montefiore Cemetery, Pinelawn.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney.

Emma L. Kelly
FLEISCHMANNS — Emma L. Kelly, 99, of Redkill Road, Fleischmanns, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 17, 1899, in Pine Hill, the daughter of Arthur Rose and Rozemma Halstead.

She married Merchant Kelly on Dec. 12, 1917, in Roxbury. He died June 16, 1994.

She was a post master at the Bedell Post Office from 1939 until it closed June 9, 1961.

She had been a lifelong area resident.

She was a member of the former Bedell Advent Christian Church.

She enjoyed crocheting, making quilts and baking. She loved her family and enjoyed doing things for them and always thinking of others.

She graduated from Fleischmanns High School in 1917.

She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Todd of Fleischmanns; one son, Arthur Kelly of Fleischmanns; six grandchildren, Adrian Todd of Mapleton, Maine, and Marilee Asher, Dorothy Ward, Joe Todd Jr., and Joe and Eugene Kelly, all of Fleischmanns; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Hazel Kelly of Schenectady; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt officiating.

Burial will be in the Bedell Cemetery, Fleischmanns.

Friends may call Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at 10 a.m. until service time. The family will be in attendance from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.

Contributions in memory of Emma Kelly may be made to the Ambulance Fund of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital or to the Halcott Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Dr. Ronald M. Stagg
SALEM, Va. — A memorial service for Dr. Ronald M. Stagg, retired Hartwick College Professor, will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, at Shineman Chapel, Hartwick College.

A reception following the service will be held outside the chapel.

Nathaniel Harrington
WEST DELHI — Nathaniel Allan Harrington, "Niel," 16, of West Delhi, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, in West Delhi.
He was born Oct. 2, 1982, in Unadilla, the son of Allan and Joanne Betz Harrington. He was a tenth-grade student at Delaware Academy, Delhi.

Niel was a well-liked young man who enjoyed nature and working with tools. He was a 4-H member and a member of 4-H Teen Council; a member of the West Delhi Presbyterian Church and the Youth Group of the church; and he belonged to the West Delhi Ski Club.

He is survived by his parents, Joanne Betz Harrington, of Delhi, and Allan Harrington, of Virginia; his sister, Liahna Harrington of Virginia; his maternal grandmother, Mary Betz of Hobart; his paternal grandmother, Dorothy Harrington of Illinois; aunts and uncles, David Betz of  Jefferson, Jim and Lorrie Betz of Hobart, Leigh and Pam Harrington of Illinois, Schrene and Dick Whitmore of California, and Vanessa and Doug Riely of  South Carolina; many cousins and a special friend and mentor, Robert Dee.

The family will be in attendance at calling hours on Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Moxley-McCall Funeral Home, Delhi.

Memorial services will take place at the West Delhi Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, at 1 p.m. with Commissioned Lay Pastor Karen Porto, of the West Delhi Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. Bert More, of the Hobart Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at a later date.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the West Delhi Presbyterian Church, R.R. 1, Delhi, N.Y. 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart and Davenport.

Ronald A. Major
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Ronald A. Major, 61, of Elm Street, passed away at home on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, with his loving family at his side.

Ron was born Feb. 18, 1937, to the late Alexander and Irene Major, and was raised and educated in Utica. He then served proudly in the United States Army in the Republic of Korea from 1954 to 1957.

In 1985, he married Carole Mitchell, with whom he had a son, Ronald Jr.

Retiring from UNIVAC in Utica after 20 years, Ron will be remembered as an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed tending his garden, canning and was well-known for his cooking skills.

Ron was also a longtime member of the American Legion Post No. 616 of Richfield Springs, serving in many capacities.

Besides his wife, Carole, son, Ronald Jr., and a special nephew, Ted Schooner; he is survived by two daughters and a son, Ann Marie and her husband, Jim Kent, of New Hampshire, Jowelle and her husband, Tim Taylor, of Syracuse, and Andrew Major of New Hampshire. He is also survived by four brothers, Alexander and wife, Marilyn Major, of Yorkville, Raymond Major of  Pennsylvania, Richard Major of Utica, and Robert Major of Rochester; two sisters, Marie Florence Forness and Alice Mahaffey, both of Utica. In-laws include, mother-in-law, Helen Mitchell, Harold and Teresa Mitchell, Deborea and Charles Schorer, Dorothy Seamon and Floyd Hotaling all of Ilion, Joseph and Cherie Mitchell of North Carolina, Mike and Bambi Luchock of Connecticut, and Leon and Pam Luchock of Nevada. He is also survived by two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Ron was predeceased by two brothers, Lionel Major in 1995, and Charles Major in 1998, and Charles' wife, Evelyn, in 1983.

Calling hours are Friday, Oct. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs.

A memorial service will be on Saturday morning from the funeral home at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Andrea C.  White, Spiritual Care Coordinator of Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc. Interment will follow in Lake View Cemetery.

The family would like to thank all of the friends and family who knew Ron and were so special to him and a special thank you to the staff of Catskill Area Hospice, for their special kindness during Ron's last days.

Memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc. 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Edwin W. Martin
MILFORD — Mr. Edwin W. Martin, 82, of Milford passed away Wednesday evening, Oct. 7, 1998, at The Meadows.

Eddie was born in Milford, on Nov. 22, 1915, a son of John and Helen (Daniels) Martin.

Mr. Martin was a graduate of Milford High School.

He married Peggy Lewis on Nov. 6, 1938.

Eddie worked at Harrison's Feed Store as a bookkeeper from 1949 to 1967, when the store was sold to Agway. He then went to West Nesbitt Feed Store in Oneonta until his retirement in 1978.

Mr. Martin was a lifelong resident of the Milford area and spent winters in Melbourne, Fla., in his later years following retirement. He was a trustee and head of the Finance Committee of the Milford Methodist Church for many years.

Eddie was an avid dancer especially ballroom dancing and a member of several square dancing clubs. He enjoyed music as well as carpentry work in his spare time.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 59 years, Peggy; two daughters, Christine Mazzara of Melbourne, Fla., and Sandra and her husband, Albert, Bullard of Milford; two granddaughters, Rebecca, in Chicago, and Sarah Bullard, of Milford; and a grandson, Andrew Bullard of  Washington, D.C.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Hattie Belle Cole and Dorothy Rogers, and one brother, Gary Martin.

A graveside service and burial will be held at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Eileen Kellogg, of the Fly Creek Methodist Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to the activity fund at The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33 West, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Edward VanSteenburg
MARGARETVILLE — Edward A. VanSteenburg, 60, of Margaretville, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at his home.

He was born March 12, 1938, in Turnwood, the son of Douglas VanSteenburg and Mary Cole.

He married Ruth Rossman on Oct. 5, 1985, the wedding was performed by his brother-in-law, the Rev. Charles Nonnenberg, in Turnwood.

He was a dairy farmer in Turnwood, a school bus driver for Livingston Manor School District, he worked for the Ulster County Highway Department, and for the past 20 years he was the caretaker for Dungkar Gonpa Society in Turnwood.

He was a member of the NRA, Isaac Walton League and was active in the Share program.

He lived in Margaretville for 10 years.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth VanSteenburg of Margaretville; one daughter, Eunice Hartling; one son, Edward A. VanSteenburg Jr.; one stepson, Francis Conklin; six grandchildren; one brother, Douglas VanSteenburg; and three sisters, Kathryn Nonnenberg, Evelyn Sherman and Marilyn Calangelo.

He was predeceased by one brother, Donald VanSteenburg.

Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at the United Methodist Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. Dr. George Carpenter officiating.

Burial will be in the Lew Beach Cemetery, Lew Beach, on Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at 10:30 a.m.

Calling hours are on Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions may be made in Ed VanSteenburg's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
