James A. Keatng
James A. Keatng, age 89, of 14 Kiwassa Road (Lake Flower Apartments), Saranac Lake, NY died Wednesday, November 05, 2008 at Adirondack Medical Center of Saranac Lake, NY following a long history of heart ailment.

Born in New York City, New York on May 11, 1919, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Keatng. He married Helen Fleming who predeceased him. He later married Mary Catherine Wille on February 22, 1991 in Flushing, NY. She predeceased him.

Mr. Keating is a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II from 1941 to 1945. He took part in the Battle of the Bulge and became a prisoner of war in Germany. After the war he was employed by Pan American Airways in airline maintenance in Flushing, NY until his retirement. Mr. Keating had been a resident of Saranac Lake for 11 years coming from Flushing, NY and had resided on Rockland Ave. He later moved with his wife Mary, to Willow Way Apartments until her death two years ago. He had been a resident of Lake Flower Apartments for the past two years. Mr. Keating along with his wife Mary had been very active volunteers at the Saranac Lake Ault Center. He continued volunteering there after her death as a dependable daily volunteer. First as a bus monitor, later helped in the dining room and the Senior Outlook Newspaper.

He is survived by many close friends including Janet Finley of Saranac Lake, NY, Rip and Shirley Allen of Saranac Lake, NY, the Kilroy Family also of Saranac Lake, NY and all his friends at the Saranac Lake Adult Center. He was predeceased by two brothers and one sister.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Friday, November 7, 2008 from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM. A Veterans Service will take place at 3:45 PM at the Fortune - Keough Funeral Home, Inc. on Friday afternoon. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 AM on Saturday November 8, 2008.. Following cremation burial will take place in St. Bernard's Cemetery.

Alfred Smith
Alfred was born December 18, 1932 in Tupper Lake, the son of William J. and Della Smith. He is survived by Jacqueline Powers Smith, his loving wife and friend of 55 years, a daughter Ellen Guiney and husband Richard and a daughter Vivian Smith all of Tupper Lake as well as six grandchildren, Lindsey Fletcher and husband Matt of St. Augustine FL, Tiffany Person of Daytona Beach FL, James Person and Kara Matthews of Tupper Lake, Brandon McArdle, attending Union College of Schenectady NY, Nicholas O’Neill of Tupper Lake, Aimee Guiney of Phoenix AZ, one great granddaughter Madison Fletcher of St.Augustine FL, one sister Sadie Amoriell of Tupper Lake and one brother Paul of Adams Center NY.

Alfred was predeceased by his mother Della and his father William Smith, five brothers, William, Norman, Edward, Leon, and Robert, and 2 sisters, Hilda Kenniston and Olive Platt.

He attended grade school at Holy Ghost Academy and graduated from Tupper Lake High School in 1951, earning honors in Football, Basketball, Track and Golf. He was inducted into the Tupper Lake High School Hall of Fame in 1989 for his records in Track and All Northern Team Sections in Football and Basketball. He also received first team selection to the All Central Football Team. He was again inducted into the High School Hall of fame for being a member of the 1948 undefeated football team.

He married Jacqueline Powers of Tupper Lake on December 14, 1952 at the Great Lake Naval training center in Waukegan, Illinois. Alfred served with the sixth fleet in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Lindenwald LSD6 for four years, attaining the rank of Machinist Mate 1st class. He was honorably discharged on January 12, 1956.

Alfred enlisted in the New York State Police on May 19, 1956 in Malone, NY. He completed his original basic training at the Old Police School in Troy with assignment to Troop B. Alfred served in various capacities throughout Northern NY including Malone, Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake, Crown Point, Port Henry, Schroon Lake, Elizabethtown, Plattsburgh, Keeseville, Inlet, Long Lake and Indian Lake. He served as Zone 2 Station Commander Sgt. at Saranac Lake. In October 1972 he was promoted to BCI Lieutenant in charge of the State and Interstate Narcotic investigations, with offices on Wards Island and the World Trade Center in New York City. In 1974 Alfred returned to Troop B to assume command of zone 3 of Troop B in Canton New York. In 1976 Alfred assumed command of Zone 4 of Troop B with headquarters in Ray Brook, New York. In 1978 Alfred, was promoted to the rank of Captain and transferred to Troop E headquarters in Canandaigua, NY as Assistant Troop commander in the Finger Lakes region of NYS. Alfred worked that area until he had the opportunity to return home to Troop B Headquarters where he remained as Captain until his retirement in June 1987.

There will be no calling hours. A funeral mass will be held at St.Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake NY on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 11:00am. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery with full military honors. Donations may be made in Memory of Alfred to High Peaks Hospice. Arrangements are with the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral home in Tupper Lake.

Ernest R. Place
Ernest R. Place, age 81, of 39 Pine Grove Lane, Vermontville, NY, Franklin, died Friday, June 25, 2010 at his home in Vermontville.

Born in Syracuse, New York on July 17, 1928, he was the son of Donald and Jessie (Cornwell) Place. He married Janet E. Farrar on June 19, 1978 in Carson City Nevada.

Mr. Place had been a resident of Vermonville since 1985 an was the proud owner of the Pine Grove Inn in Loon Lake for 10 years until its closure in 1995. Prior to coming to Vermontville he had made his residence in California where he had been employed as a Mechanic for Toyota. He is a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II and Korea.

He is survived by his wife Janet of Vermontville, one daughter DeEllen "De" Wood, two grandsons Logan and Austin Wood all of Vermontville, NY. He was preceded in death by his father and mother.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no calling hours. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.

Van Homer Benjamin
Van Homer Benjamin, age 90, formerly of Tupper Lake and more recently of The Dawn Care Facility in Malone, died Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Alice Hyde Hospital in Malone.

Born in Tupper Lake, New York on July 30, 1919, he was the son of Philip and Laura (Merer) Benjamin. He married Martha Curcie who predeceased him in 1976.

Mr. Benjamin had worked for the International Paper Company, Hooker Chemical Company in Niagara Falls and OWD until his retirement in 1982. Following his retirement he moved back to Tupper Lake. Mr. Benjamin is a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II from 1941 to 1945 in battles and campaigns in Naples Foggia, Rome Arno, and Tunisia. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a life member of the V.F.W. He served in the Army during World War II.

He is survived by one sister Theresa Boucher of Tupper Lake, NY, two nephews Jeff Boucher of Tupper Lake, NY, and Steve Boucher and his wife Diane of Tupper Lake, NY. . He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Stuart- Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place at St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Tupper Lake at a later date.

Casey Sean McHugh
Casey Sean McHugh, 19, beloved son of Sean P. and Katheryn A. (Sheldon) McHugh, died Thursday, June 24, 2010 at Fletcher Allen Healthcare Center in Burlington,Vt.

Born July 3, 1990 in Saranac Lake, Casey attended Saranac Lake High School, graduating in June of 2008. A solid student, Casey also excelled at sports, playing Varsity soccer, hockey and golf for Saranac Lake. He had just finished his sophomore year at SUNY Potsdam where he made the Dean's List, concentrating in environmental studies, playing college golf for the Bears, and continuing his love for hockey by playing on a men's league team.

Casey is survived by his parents and three brothers, Brennen, Ryan and Patrick McHugh; and his loving girlfriend, Ally Korony of Saranac Lake. He leaves behind his grandfathers, James J. McHugh of Wilkes Barre, PA and Jupiter, FL and Robert J. Sheldon, Sr. of Canton, NY and Upper Saranac Lake. He was predeceased by his grandmothers, Elizabeth Sloane McHugh of Wilkes Barre, PA and Jean Leroy Sheldon of Canton, NY. He will be missed by his many aunts and uncles, and cousins, who loved Casey very much.

Casey loved all kinds of recreation and activities, including wake boarding snowboarding, skateboarding, water skiing, bicycling, drawing, collecting movies and reading. As a fifth grader, Casey set a world record which still stands, for water skiing behind a war canoe as he was pulled around Lower St. Regis Lake for 22 minutes and 10 seconds. Casey had developed a passion for mountain climbing and enjoyed many hikes throughout the High Peaks with his friends. If there was a game to play, puck to shoot, movie to watch, mountain to climb, or just a chance to hang with friends, Casey was there. Kind, fun, gentle, loyal and thoughtful, Casey had many friends that he truly cherished.

In his memory and honor, Casey's family encourages you to play a round of golf, take a hike or walk in the woods, spend some time with friends around a campfire, check out the stars, and remember to cherish and make the most of your time here on earth. Those wishing to may make contributions to a charity of their own choice, in Casey's memory.

Calling hours will take place on Sunday June 26, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A mass of Christian burial will take place at 10:00 AM on Monday June 27th at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake with Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer Officiating. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Lake Clear.

Paulette Irene Babcock
Paulette Irene Babcock, 94, died Monday, June 21, 2010 in Saranac Lake. Born on March 17, 1916 in Hull Quebec, she was the daughter of Emile and Corinne (Baulue) Emond. Paulett moved to Tupper Lake at the age of 9. She married Lynn Babcock, a stone mason. They resided in  Washington DC where Paulette worked at People's Drug Store. Lynn passed away in 1974 and Paulette retired to Tupper Lake to be near her brother Frenchie Emond. Loving and caring for Paulette are her friends and extended family, Janice Bombard, Lora Brown, Kim and Bill Godreau, Peggy Wittenberger, Sarah Wardner, Ryan Mellon, Dr. Peter Liepman and Brenna Hewitt, all of Saranac Lake. Also surviving is a adopted granddaughter, Ann Sherman. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at the Fort Lincoln Cemetery in  Washington D.C. at the convenience of the family. Paulette's wish is that we find time today to do an act of kindness and hum her favorite song "That's what friends are for". Those wishing to remember Paulette may make a memorial donation to High peaks hospice. Arrangements are with the Stuart-Fortune-keough Funeral Home.

Ransom H. Duncan
Ransom H. Duncan, age 72, of Upper St. Regis Lake, Lake Clear, died Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Fletcher Allen Health Care Center in Burlington, VT.

Born in New York City, New York on November 26, 1937, he was the son of Dyson and Mildred Stokes (Hooker) Duncan. He married Judith S. Fenn on July 6, 1957 at St. John's in the Wilderness in Paul Smiths.

Mr. Duncan's family has summered on the St. Regis Lakes since the 1880s. After his retirement from Lea and Perrins Inc. in New Jersey he became a year round resident of Upper St Regis Lake. He was an avid sailor who served as Commodore of the St. Regis Yacht Club from 1966 to 1968 and as its Judge for many years. Mr. Duncan was Senior Warden of St. John's in the Wilderness Episcopal Church and also active in the parish of St Luke the Beloved Physician in Saranac Lake, where he sang in the choir and served on the vestry and as a Lay Eucharistic Minister.

He is survived by his wife Judith Duncan of Upper St. Regis Lake, NY; five daughters Barbara Duncan of Upper St. Regis Lake, Beth Berkun of East Greenbush, NY, Melissa Fernau and her husband Mark of Clinton, MA, Laura Duncan and her partner Michele Raville of Upper St. Regis Lake, NY, and Judith Duncan and her partner Kathleen Canzano of Saranac Lake, NY; two sons Ransom E. Duncan and his wife Andrea (Bonfield) of Dexter, MI, and Graham Duncan and his wife Laura (LaTorre) of Portland, ME; two sisters Mildred Baker of Boyce, VA and Diana Hepting of Raleigh, NC; 11 Grandchildren and 1 Great Grandchild.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday June 19 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Saranac Lake. Interment will take place at St. John's in the Wilderness Cemetery in Paul Smiths at a later date.

James H. Farr Sr.
James H. Farr Sr., 71 passed away at his home in Long Lake, New York on June 11, 2010.

Born on December 6, 1938 in Long Lake. The son of Charles H. and Virginia Helms Farr. He graduated from Long Lake Central School. After high school Jim served in the Army and received an honorable discharge.

He is survived by his siblings: Charles R. Farr and his companion Judy Nerney of Long Lake, Jeanne and her husband Lew Plumley of Long Lake, Judy and her husband David Garrison of Long Lake.

He was married to Meredith M. Farr on November 5th 1983.

He spent his life working with heavy equipment and belonged to the IUOE Local 106 and went on to own, operate and recently retired from Buck Mt. Contractors.

Jim enjoyed his RV and was an avid outdoorsman. He especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He had a passion for snowmobile racing and was Race Director of the Long Lake 100. He was a member of the Long Lake Lions Club, serving as President for several years. He was awarded the Melvin  Jones Fellowship Award.

He is survived by Mimi, his wife of 26 years. His children, Connie Layne and Rodger of Camden, NY. Brian Farr and his wife Emily of Long Lake. Colleen Wright of Hampton Bays, NY and Kelly Black and her husband Mike of Long Lake NY. Stepchildren: James F. Farr, Jr. and wife Lynn of Portland, OR., John N. Farr and wife Sylvie of Big Flats, NY. He had 16 grandchildren and 3 great -grandchildren.

Jim was predeceased by an infant son, Michael P. , son James H. Farr, Jr., and bother David Farr.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 18th from 2-4PM and 6-8PM at the St Henry’s Parish Center in Long Lake. A Memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, June 19th @ 10:00AM at St. Henry's with interment to follow at the Long Lake Cemetery. Reception to follow at the Parish Center.

Memorial donations may be made to the Long Lake Rescue Squad or the Long Lake Fire Department.

Craig Stephen Amrhein
Craig Stephen Amrhein, age 61, of 1192 State Rt. 86, Ray Brook, NY,died Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at his home.
Born in Montclair, New Jersey on January 2, 1949, he was the son of Kenneth and Julia (Pajaujis) Amrhein.

Craig lived most of his life in Lincroft and Freehold, New Jersey before moving to Saranac Lake in 2006. During his teen years he was a Capital page in Congress and attended school at the Library of Congress. He received a four year in two years cum laude degree from Upsala College in New Jersey graduating in 1978. Craig was a veteran of the Navy serving for six years as an operating room tech. during the Vietnam War. Following the war he was a medical equipment salesman and later recertified as an operating room tech. in 2003. He had been employed as an operating room tech. at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake since 2006. He loved the Adirondacks and enjoyed hiking, canoeing and camping.

He is survived by a brother: Robert Kenneth Amrhein and his wife Barbara of Jackson, NJ and his companion, John English of Ray Brook, NY. He was preceded in death by his father Kenneth Amrhein, and his mother Julia Theresa Pajaus Amrhein.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake on Sunday, June 13, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9PM.. A funeral service will be held June 14, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. at Fortune - Keough Funeral Home with Reverend Maggie McCarey, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake.

Robert L. (Bobby) Griffin
Robert L. (Bobby) Griffin, 68, of Rainbow Lake, New York died suddenly on Saturday June 5, 2010 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. He was born on September 7, 1941 the son of Morris and Sara (Phillips) Griffin. He grew up in Saranac Lake, and last year celebrated the 50th reunion of the class of 1959.

He was honored to be named to the Saranac Lake Sports Hall of Fame for his excellence in baseball.

A veteran of the United States Army, Bob served with the paratroopers and military police at Fort Bragg, NC. He went to the Dominican Republic with the 118th Airborne Corps during the 1965-66 crisis.

Following his military service, he attended Paul Smiths College and graduated from SUNY-Geneseo. He received his Masters Degree from SUNY-New Paltz. He taught in the following Kingston Schools: Kennedy, Sophie Finn, Miller and Bailey from 1970 - 1990. After living in the Hudson Valley for 30 years, he and his wife Diane made their Rainbow Lake summer home their permanent residence. He enjoyed welcoming guests to the Adirondacks as host of Pinewood On The Lake.

Bob enjoyed classic cars, golfing, bowling, coaching, traveling, and following the Yankees. His favorite pastime was chatting and story telling with friends and family. He also enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow golfers at his Fore Seasons Indoor Golf Facility in West Hurley, NY.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Diane (Sargent) Griffin, and beloved daughters Kristin Griffin of Nassau, NY and Samantha (Griffin) Brybag and her husband Joseph of Fleischmanns, NY. His grandchildren Alyson, Nicole, Kaitlyn and Joey were a special joy in his life. He enjoyed being "Uncle Bobby" to two generations of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother Philip (Bunky) Griffin and his wife Paula and his sisters Shirley LaPlant and her husband Larry, Sharon Florence, and Kathy Munn and her husband Jim. He leaves his Aunt Peggy Paye and many cousins, his mother-in-law and father-in-law Dorothy and Joe Gladd, and his "Sargent family": John Sargent, Nancy Bennett, Mary and Bob Spooner, Peggy and John Chapple and Ginny and Nick Volkman.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake on Wednesday June 9, 2010 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 AM on Thursday at Church of the Assumption in Gabriels with Rev. Paul Kelly officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. View/Brighton Cemetery in Gabriels.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Saranac Lake Central School Robert Griffin Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.

Louise Bryant
Louise Bryant, age 84, of 235 Park Ave., Saranac Lake, NY died Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, New York.

Born in Mineville, New York on July 31, 1924, she was the daughter of William and Mary (Kimball) Mazinsky. She married Charles Bryant in 1941 at St. Peter and Paul’s Church in Mineville. He predeceased her on September 12, 1980.

Mrs. Bryant had been employed at the American Management Association for over 30 years until her retirement.

She is survived by one son Charles Bryant of Saranac Lake, NY, one daughter Karen Pisanti of North Syracuse, NY, one brother Marshall Mazinsky of Howell, NJ, four grandchildren Nancy, Christopher, Jordan and Damian, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, her mother, three sisters, Christine Ponder, Ruth Mazinsky, and Helen Mazinsky, and one brother Alvin Mazinsky.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Saturday, December 27, 2008 from 2PM - 4PM. A bible vigil service will take place Saturday afternoon at 2:30 PM with Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. A mass of Christian Burial will take place in the spring at St. Bernard's Church with burial to follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery.

Mary Stewart
Mary Stewart, 85, Tupper Lake, died Thursday at AMC-Mercy Center, where she had resided since June 2004.
Born Sept. 28, 1923, at Tupper Lake, daughter of Peter and Agnes Dubois Mayotte, she graduated in 1942 from Holy Ghost Academy.

She married Richard Stewart in 1951. He died in 1966.

Mrs. Stewart was employed at General Electric Co., Schenectady, after World War II and lived in the Kingston and Wappingers Falls areas until returning to Tupper Lake.

She was a member of Tupper Lake Country Club and enjoyed playing bridge.

Surviving are nieces and nephews.

Eight brothers, Edmond, Wilbert, Arthur, Albert, Paul, Hubert, Clarence and Robert Mayotte, and five sisters, Margaret Mayotte, Theresa Austin, Gertrude Ellis, Pauline LaRocque and Frances Zahr, died before her.

Services will be in May. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home.
