Gerald B. Eckerson
ONEONTA — Gerald B. "Jeff" Eckerson, 84, of Oneonta, died on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998, at the Albany Medical Center, Albany.

He was born on Sept. 20, 1914, the son of Leonard B. and Ora (Cornell) Eckerson, in Oneonta.

He married Francis Dorosky on May 31, 1953, in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta.

Jeff attended Oneonta schools and graduated in 1933 from the Oneonta High School. He entered the United States Army in 1940 and went to Alabama with Company G. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he was stationed in Hawaii for six months.

In 1942, he was commissioned as a lieutenant at Fort Benning, Ga., and was subsequently assigned to the military police in charge of German and Italian prisoners of war in Arkansas. In 1943, he was promoted to the rank of captain, and was discharged in 1944, at Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Following his discharge, he returned to Oneonta where he held a position as a tractor trailer driver with Spaulding Bakery for 20 years. He retired in 1976 from the State University College at Oneonta where he worked for 11 years.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Oneonta, and the American Legion Post 259. Jeff was also a former member of the Oneonta Moose Lodge and Eagles Club.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Frances Eckerson of Oneonta; his two sisters-in-law, Grace Oles and Pauline Fowlston, both of Oneonta; and his brother-in-law, Kenneth Dorosky of Stamford. Jeff is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Thelma Crowe in 1997.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, at noon at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call one hour prior to service time at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or St. Mary's Church.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Marjorie Crawford
NEW BERLIN — Mrs. Marjorie T. Crawford, 66, of New Berlin, died Tuesday night, Oct. 13, 1998, at her residence.

She was born Sept. 14, 1932, in Morris, the daughter of Russel Lynn and Velma (Hamilton) Thayer.

She married Frank Crawford on June 14, 1953, in Otego.

Marjorie lived in New Berlin for 27 years, having previously lived in West Laurens. Marjorie and Frank owned and operated Silverlake Farm in New Berlin. She also worked in her earlier years for Briggs Lumber Company in Oneonta.

She was president of the Del-Chenango Fiddler's Association for 20 years. She played for many benefits and churches.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Crawford of New Berlin; her mother, Velma Thayer of Oneonta Nursing Home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lynn and Patty Crawford of Silverlake Farm, New Berlin, and Wayne and Cindy Crawford of Silverlake Farm, New Berlin; one daughter, Linda Crawford of Indian Shores, Fla.; two brothers, Paul L. Thayer of Owego and Clyde W. Thayer of  Louisiana; two aunts and an uncle, Jane Thayer of Otego, and Dorothy and Edwin Harris of Otego; eight grandchildren, Tanya, Tressica, Keona, Travis, Francis, James, Joshua, and Sabina; one great-grandson, Zachary  Taylor Sherman; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, at 1:30 p.m., at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. David Wood, pastor of the West Bainbridge Baptist Church, and the Rev. Gary Folz, pastor of the Berean Baptist Church, New Berlin, officiating.

Burial will be in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

The family will be in attendance on Friday evening, Oct. 16, 1998, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, for those who wish to call.

It is requested that contributions be made to Wendy Soloway, Sherburne, N.Y. 13460, granddaughter of one of Marjorie's dear friends.

Milo E. Thompson
SEBRING, Fla. — Milo E. Thompson, 95, of Sebring, Fla., died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998.

He was born in South Otselic and had operated the family farm there for a period.

He was a graduate of Cornell University, a member of the Soil Conservation Society of America, and was a member of the Maranatha Baptist Church in Sebring, Fla.

Mr. Thompson served as the Otsego County Extension Agent for many years and worked for the Federal Soil Conservation Agency.

He is survived by his wife, Neva; three sons, Milo E. Jr. of Clarks Summit, Pa., James L. and William R., both of Sacramento,  Calif.; one daughter, Betty Green of Sebring, Fla.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His first wife, Helen, died in 1987.

Graveside services will be held Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at 1 p.m., at Valley View Cemetery in South Otselic.

Funeral arrangements are by Smith Funeral Home, DeRuyter.

Vincent A. Mosca
ONEONTA — Vincent A. "Jim" Mosca, 82, of Oneonta, died on Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born April 20, 1916, in Utica, the son of Nicholas and Stella (D'Augustina) Mosca.

He married Juanita E. Knapp on Nov. 8, 1936, in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta. She died Dec. 28, 1993.

Jim moved to the Oneonta area with the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped develop Gilbert Lake State Park.

He later worked for the Delaware and Hudson Railroad as an engineer for more than 30 years. While working on the railroad, he owned and operated Mosca's Pizzeria, located in Oneonta for 20 years.

Jim was a member of St. Mary's Church and was active in its choir and Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He was a past Grand Knight of the Third Degree and a member of the Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus. He was also a former member of the Eagles Club. Jim was a recipient of the first Peace and Justice Award, presented by the bishop of Albany. He was a past director of OURS for Catholic Charities. Because of his dedication to helping his community, Catholic Charities dedicated the Mosca House in his name. Jim had a great love for his family and community. He found greaty joy in helping others.

He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Annette and William Koopmann of Albquerque, N.M., his grandchildren, Helana Koopmann Alburquerque, N.M., and Lt. Vince Koopmann of USMC Hawaii; his sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Nicoletta and Frank Leo of Utica; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman Knapp, Amos Hunt and Richard and Colleen Burgher, all of Oneonta, Francis Mosca of Utica, and Carmella Mosca of Syracuse. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in St. Mary's Church on Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's, officiating.

Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church, Oneonta or Catholic Charities of New York.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ruth A. Pfeifer
CEDARVILLE — Ruth A. Pfeifer, 68, of 119 Elizabethtown Road, Ilion, passed away Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, in Cooperstown.

She was born Aug. 28, 1930, in Trenary, Mich., the daughter of the late Nels and Lucy E. Trenary LaBumbard.

She was educated in the West Winfield Schools and was married to Carl S. Pfeifer.

Mrs. Pfeifer was employed as a nurses aide doing private duty nursing.

Mrs. Pfeifer was a member of the Columbia Center United Methodist Church and the Millers Mills Grange.

She is survived by her husband, Carl; five daughters and a son-in-law, Joy A. Lee of West Frankfort, Renie Pfeifer of Cooperstown, Katherine Adams of Ilion, Shelby (Giruzzi) Pfeifer of New Hartford, and Billie and Joseph Aiello of Herkimer; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Richard and Shirley LaBumbard of Newfield, Gerald LaBumbard of Hillman, Mich., and Raymond and Norma LaBumbard of Richfield Springs; a sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Lloyd Bryan of Bakersfield,  Calif.; six grandchildren, Miki Zaffarano of Frankford, Carl and Brent Burke of Oneonta, Stephanie and Kristopher Adams of Ilion and Joey Aiello of Herkimer; three great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Gordon, in 1987.

Funeral services for Mrs. Pfeifer will be held on Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at 11 a.m. from the North Columbia United Methodist Church in Ilion with the Rev. Hans Drews officiating.

Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Ilion.

Friends are asked to consider memorial donations to the Cedarville Fire Department.

Alta N. Knox
DELHI — Alta N. Knox, 98, a resident at the Robinson Terrace, Stamford, passed away Oct. 14, 1998.

She was born Aug. 12, 1900, in the town of Broome, Schoharie County, the daughter of Seneca and Myrtle (Chichester) Wilbur.

She married John Knox on Oct. 2, 1919. He predeceased her in May 1963.

Mrs. Knox taught school for one year at the Bates Hollow Rural School. Mrs. Knox was a homemaker, later being employed as a dorm aide at the State University College of Technology at Delhi.

Mrs. Knox was a former member of the Watauga Chapter No. 315, OES, Delhi, former member and past president of the Donald W. Gleason American Legion Ladies Auxiliary No. 190, Delhi and a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, for 53 years, and also a member of the Presbyterian Women's Association.

Mrs. Knox is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Allien Regular of Delhi, and Mrs. Roberta Scoville of Middleburgh, and a son, Ralph Knox of Lakewood, N.J. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Moxley-McCall Funeral Home Inc., 131 Main St., Delhi at their convenience on Sunday, Oct. 18. There will be no family calling hours.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Arvid Whitmore and Rev. Robert Pope officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Memorials in the name of Alta N. Knox may be made to the Robinson Terrace, Stamford, or to the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi.

Frank L. Thayer
HORSEHEADS — Frank L. Thayer, 85, of 590 Murphy Hill Road, and a former Canastota resident, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at the Arnot Ogden Hospital, Elmira, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Feb. 12, 1913, in Oneonta, the son of Robert and Mabel Van Woert Thayer.

Mr. Thayer had spent his early years in Oneonta, living in Canastota for many years. He had also lived in Maine for several years, living in Horseheads since 1994.

He had been a bus driver for Greyhound for more than 30 years, retiring in 1975.

Mr. Thayer had been a member of the Eagles Club for many years.

He first married Bertha Couse in 1933. He later married Ruth Irene Planck. He last married Vivian L. Campbell on June 10, 1952; she died June 13, 1980.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Elmer Eichler of Palm Harbor, Fla.; four stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Charles and Barbara Granger of Elmira, Allan and Joan Granger of Horseheads, David and Susan Granger of Aurora,  Colo., and Roger and Marilyn Granger of Elmira; three stepdaughters and two stepsons-in-law, Jacqueline and Robert Paul of Horseheads and Bonnie M. Curtis of Winter Garden, Fla., and Janice and Charles Church of Bernards Bay; one sister, Marjorie Crandall of Oneonta; one granddaughter; 44 stepgrandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

LeRoy C. Johns
RICHMONDVILLE — LeRoy C. Johns, 78, of Lape Road, Richmondville, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at his home.

A lifelong resident of Richmondville, he was born June 15, 1920, son of Clarence and Katherine Sperbeck Johns.

He was a self-employed dairy farmer and had also been a Cobleskill Central School bus driver for 17 years, retiring in 1982.

For several years he had been a salesman, employed by the former VanWagenen Farm Machinery Co. of Cobleskill.

He was amember of the Cobleskill Pistol Team, the NRA, the Keglers Bowling Team, Senior Citizens and Friday Night Bowling Leagues.

He was married in 1941 to Ethel Butler in Cobleskill.

He is survived by his wife Ethel; a daughter, Mrs. Edward (Betty) Biittig of Sloansville; three grandchildren, Tracy Cook of Melbourne, Fla., Edward Biittig Jr. of Scotia, and Shannon Gordon of Sloansville; a sister, Mrs. Julian (Margie) Simpson of Buffalo. He is also surived by two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 1 Chapel St., Cobleskill with the Rev. Eleanor Dearstyne officiating.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be at the Richmondville Rural Cemetery.

Memorials to the Catskill Area Hospice will be appreciated.

Elizabeth P. Riley
Graveside services for Elizabeth P. "Betty" Riley will be held on Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at 1 p.m. in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, with the Rev. Judy Thistle, A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital chaplain, officiating. The Oneonta American Post Post 259 will accord full military honors.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
