Leslie J. Hope
SIDNEY — Leslie J. Hope, 76, of 7 Pleasant St., Sidney, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, Oct. 21, 1998, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 5, 1922, in Wiles-Barre, Pa. Les was the son of John and Estella Cadwalder Hope.

On May 7, 1996, he married Judy Wright in Cobleskill.

Mr. Hope was a veteran with the United States Army serving his country during World War II.

For more than 50 years, Les was a barber in the local area. He began his career with his father in Endicott. He later moved his shop to Harpursville, and then to Sidney, where he barbered for 40 years. After a fire destroyed his barbershop in Sidney, he moved to Bainbridge.

He was a charter and life member of the Sidney Lodge No. 2175 B.P.O.E. Sidney, member of Charles L. Jacobi Post 183, American Legion, Sidney, and also the R.H. Arrandale Post 7914 V.F.W. and the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 277, Sidney.

Les was an avid sportsman, enjoying especially fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Wright of Sidney; his son and daughter-in-law, Leslie J. and Kimberly Hope of Salt Lake City, Utah; three daughters and son-in-law, Linda Harding of Vestal, Diana Hope of Norwich and Patti and Randy Hughes of Masonville; stepmother, Martha Hope of Endicott; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Law of Norwich; four brothers-in-law and their wives, Richard and Marie Wright of Tennessee, Lawrence and Ruth Wright of Nor"-wich, Kenneth and Kelly Law of Norwich and James and Amy Law of Norwich; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one son, John L. Hope.

Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, from the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call on Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, after 2 p.m., at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Edna Hafele Shaver
HOBART — Edna Hafele Shaver went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998. She was living at the home of her daughter, Dorothy Wetmore, in Hobart for the past year.

She was born on Nov. 1, 1904, on Berry Brook in the town of Colchester. The daughter of Harvey and Mary (Flynn) Hafele.

On Dec. 5, 1923, she married Harley Shaver. He predeceased her in 1954.

She had been a resident of Oneonta and an active member of the First Baptist Church for over 70 years.

Surviving is her daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and William Wetmore of Hobart; three grandsons, their wives and children, Vance and Gigi, Ryan and Valerie Wetmore of Stamford, Scott and Tina, Matthew and McKenzie Wetmore of Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Wash., Eric and Dawn and Deanna Wetmore of Wynantskill; a sister, Mabel Ploutz of Walton; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Babe) Hafele of Delhi; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by an infant son, James; two grandsons, William Jr. and Michael Wetmore; four brothers, LeRoy Hafele, Harvey Hafele, William Hafele, and Charles Hafele, all of Delhi; and a sister, Ida Baldwin of Binghamton.

A graveside prayer service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at 1 p.m. at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. Douglas D. Oelke, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta at their convenience after 2 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, the family will be present from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish may call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, N.Y. 13753.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Philip A. Thompson
MORRISTOWN, Vt. — Philip Alden Thompson, 69, died on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, at his home following a seven month battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born on Sept. 16, 1929, in Knoxville, Tenn., he was the son of David A. R. Thompson and Elizabeth Miller Thompson, both of Worcester, Mass.

He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1951, with a degree in music composition and theory. From 1951 to 1954, he served with the Army Signal Corps, stationed in Bad Aibling, Germany. Upon returning from the Army, he resumed his position as manager of radio station WUOT in Knoxville, Tenn. In 1960, he received a master's degree in physics from the University of Tennessee.

He married Joan Coulliette, whom he met while both were members of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, on Aug. 23, 1955. They had four children, Elsa, Barbara, Peter and Christopher.

During his 25-year career in fusion energy research he worked as a physicist at Oak Ridge National Laboratories in Oak Ridge, Tenn., David Sarnoff Laboratories of RCA, and Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory in Princeton, N.J. He earned a master's degree in business administration from the University of Southern Illinois at Edwardsville in 1978. He retired in 1992 from his position as manager of ad"-vanced technology, Computer Information and Technology at Princeton University. He was president of the Princeton chapter of Sigma Xi, the scientific research honor society, and was founding president of the Princeton MacIntosh User Group.

He was an Eagle Scout and served as assistant scoutmaster of Princeton's Troop 88 for many years. He was proud that both of his sons achieved Eagle rank.

Throughout his scientific career, he continued performing as timpanist with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, the Trenton Symphony Orchestra, the Princeton Chamber Symphony, the Princeton Society of Musical Amateurs, the Vermont Philharmonic and many other ensembles. However, his great love was the concert band, both as conductor and performer. He conducted the Blawenburg Band, and after retiring to Vermont, the Waterbury Band. He played clarinet and in recent years occasionally conducted the Morrisville Military Band. After his retirement from Princeton, Thompson and his wife toured with various concert orchestras and bands throughout Europe and the United States. He served as secretary/treasurer of Local 351 of the American Federation of Musicians.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; his children, Elsa Travisano and her husband, Thomas, of Oneonta, Barbara Krancer and her husband, Michael, of Bryn Mawr, Pa., Peter Thompson and his wife, Suzanne, of Princeton, N.J., and Christopher Thompson and his wife, Bessie, of Burlington, Vt.; his sisters, Grace Galbraith of Marietta, Ga., and Mary  Johnson of Orlando, Fla.; and his grandchildren, Michael and Emily Travisano of Oneonta, Bayard Brown, Christine and Brooke Krancer of Bryn Mawr, Pa., and Miriam Thompson of Burlington, Vt.

There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Hospice of Lamoille County, RR 3 Box 790, Morrisville, Vt. 05661.

A celebration of his life will be held in the spring.

Stephen D. Smith Sr.
BAINBRIDGE — Stephen D. Smith Sr., 69, of Bainbridge, passed away Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, at 2 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Kenneth R. Jerauld
UNADILLA — Kenneth R. Jerauld, 91, of R.D. 1, Meadow Valley Park, Unadilla, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at his home. Mr. Jerauld was a resident of Otego for 48 years before moving to Unadilla in 1993.
He was born April 26, 1907, in Scranton, Pa., the son of Ray G. Jerauld and Clara Barton Rome Jerauld.

He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Mary Hoppe Jerauld on May 6, 1994. He is survived by three sons, Ronald K. and Joan of Berkshire, Walter R. of Edmeston and Lloyd A. and Judi of Cazenovia; three daughters, Linn J. Collins of Sidney and Cazenovia, Elaine J. and Denton Reed of Unadilla and Ellen J. and Paul Osborne of Sidney; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Carolyn Albert.

He moved from Deposit to Otego in 1944 while working at Scintilla in Sidney. He retired as the street and water commissioner for the village of Otego in 1966. After his retirement, he was employed by Bookhout Funeral Home for 14 years.

He joined the Otego Fire Department in 1944 and served as captain. He was a charter member of the Otego Emergency Squad and held the position of lieutenant. He served as a village trustee from 1974-1980 and served many years as the village peace officer where he was known to many as "Sneaky Pete."

Ken was an active member of the Otego United Methodist Church for the 44 years serving in a variety of capacities including the administrative council and board of trustees.

Ken joined the  Pennsylvania State Grange in 1926 and has been a Grange member for over 72 years. As a long-time member of the Otego Susquehanna Valley Grange No. 1417, he held the position of master from 1985-1987 and was treasurer in 1992. He served on the Executive Committee and the Regional Membership Directors of New York State Grange Membership Committee.

His commitment to both the Grange and the church kept him active until his very recent health decline.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Otego United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1-5 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Otego United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 57, Otego, N.Y. 13825 or Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Alberta M. Bibik
SCHUYLER LAKE — Alberta M. Bibik, 73, of 139 Church St., died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

She was born on Aug. 24, 1925, in Fly Creek, a daughter of the late F. Clifford and Mabel Goodrich Kinney.

Most of her life was spent in Schuyler Lake where she was raised and educated. In 1956 she married Milton Chapman. They resided in Orlando, Fla., until 1966 when Mr. Chapman passed away.

Upon retiring to Schuyler Lake she worked as a detailer for the Sure Catch Company in Richfield Springs, then went to work in Central Supply at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital and in later years was a cook for the Tally-Ho Restaurant in Richfield Springs, retiring in 1980.

On April 26, 1969, she married Benjamin W. Bibik in Richfield Springs. For many years she was a member of the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department First Responders.

Surviving besides her loving husband of 29 years, Benjamin, are three sons, Dennis Chapman of Utica, Bradford Chapman and his wife, Joann, of Schuyler Lake and Gregory Chapman of Daytona, Fla.; a daughter, Bonita VanAlstine and her husband, Greg, of Schuyler Lake; one brother, Richard Kinney of Mount Vision; a sister, Loretta Buell of Schuyler Lake; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Bibik, and three brothers, Clifford Kinney (MIA, World War II), Edgar Kinney and Theodore Kinney.

A memorial service will be held on Monday at 7 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Young officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Richfield Springs at a time convenient to the family.

The family will receive relatives and friends one hour before the memorial service, 6-7 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Schuyler Lake First Responders or the Richfield Springs Volunteer Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Liza Lee Butler
BAINBRIDGE — Liza Lee Butler, 22, of 15 Bixby Street, Bainbridge, passed away unexpectedly Thursday evening, Oct. 22, 1998, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

Liza was born Jan. 26, 1976, in Sidney. She was the daughter of William M. and Cynthia Higley Butler.

She was a graduate of the Bainbridge Central Schools and the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill.

Liza was an avid outdoors person.

She is survived by her parents, Bill and Cindy Butler of Bainbridge; paternal grandparents, C. William and Eleanor Butler of Bainbridge; five aunts and uncles, Jeff and Carrie Reynolds of Bainbridge, Hank and Deb Higley of Trout Creek, Ralph and Sandy Butler of Galabash, N.C., Brad and Judy Volkert of Bainbridge and Gini Cheeseboro of St. Albans, Vt. She is also survived by nu"-merous great aunts, great uncles and several cousins.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents Luther and Beatrice Higley and her uncle Rodney Higley.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The Rev. Wayne Burnett, pastor of the Bainbridge and Afton United Methodist Churches, will officiate.

Burial will be at her family's convenience in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad, Bainbridge.

Ida Mae Bockus
MOUNT VISION — Ida Mae Bockus, 59, of Mount Vision, passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, at Albany Medical Center, Albany.

She was born May 8, 1939, in the town of Burlington in Becker County, Minn. The daughter of Howard and Vera (Moore) Krieger.

She was a resident of Mount Vision for the last 10 years. She formerly lived in Hollywood, Fla., Hopkins, Minn., and Frazee, Minn., where she grew up as a child.

She loved her grandchildren, her dog, Bear, and her cat, Honey. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, baking, camping, Bingo and Chinese auctions.

She is survived by her mother, Vera Krieger of Minnetonka, Minn.; six brothers and sisters-in-law, LeRoy and Barbara Krieger, Jerry and Phylis Krieger, George Krieger, Allen and Denise Krieger, Kenny and Pam Krieger, and Joe and Debbie Krieger, all of Minnesota; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Minerva and William  Schmidt of Canada, Marsha and Wayne Dey of Walnut,  Calif. and Kathleen Krieger of Hopkins, Minn.; her children, Stephen Bockus of Oneonta, Debbie Bockus of Mount Vision, and Robert Bockus and Angel Igarvidez of Mount Vision; also her stepchildren whom she loved dearly, Shelly Bockus, Kelly Bockus and Larry Bockus Jr., all of New Jersey; her grandchildren whom she cherished with all her heart, Benjamin, TyeAnn, Dottie Mae, Michael, Corey, DJ, Marina, Andrew, Matthew, Jasmine and Melanie; her ex-husband and friend, Larry Bockus, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She will be deeply missed.

She was predeceased by her beloved father, Howard, and brother, Robert.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998 from 7 to 9 p.m. when those who wish may call.

Geraldine C. Decker
UNADILLA — Geraldine C. Decker, 72, of R.D. No. 2, Unadilla passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 28, 1926, in Endicott. Geraldine was the daughter of the late Gerald and Florence Deming Cortright.

On Dec. 9, 1972, she married Carl R. Decker. He predeceased her on March 4, 1990.

Geraldine enjoyed barbecues and lawn sales and loved baseball. She was a movie buff and was a volunteer at the Next to New Shop in Sidney.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald R. Yeager Jr. of Keehonkson, Arthur and Deb Yeager of Unadilla and Carl and Cathy Decker of Unadilla; two daughters and a son-in-law, Cheryl Jubin of  South Carolina and Geri and Michael Joslin of Unadilla; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Mary Decker of Unadilla; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several neices, nephews and cousins. Also surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Buzz Baker of Florida; her best friend, Alicia Decker of Maryland; and special friends, Bert and Harry Fancher of Unadilla and Richard Relyea and Shirley Gransbury of Unadilla.

She was predeceased by her stepfather, Arthur L. Watson, and two brothers, Richard and Robert Cortright.

She was very family- and friend-oriented and will be greatly missed by all.

The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to Tina and Mary of At Home Care and Lisa, Lola, Liz, Sherrie and Joyce from Hospice.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, with Laura Roper, chaplain at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta, officiating.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience today at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.
