Arthur L. Gell
SAWKILL — Arthur L. Gell, 91, of Van Steenburgh Lane, Sawkill and March Lane, Zephyrhills, Fla. died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Utica.

He was born in England on May 20, 1907, the son of the late Arthur and Kate Smith Gell.

Prior to his retirement, he was a self-employed dairy farmer in Otsego County. He was also a member of the Sawkill senior citizens group.

Surviving is a son, Arthur Gell of Sawkill; two daughters, Joan Gell of Redondo Beach,  Calif. and Alice Weygand of New Hartford; four grandsons, Lary and Peter Gell, both of Maryland and Peter and Kirk Marburger, both of Sawkill; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Gertrude H. Ellicks Gell, on May 28, 1997, and a brother, Richard Gell.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at 8:30 p.m. at the Bernard L. Hamilton Funeral Service Inc., 65 Lucas Ave., Kingston. The burial will take place Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998 at 11 a.m. at Maryland Cemetery in Maryland. Friends will be received at the funeral home Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Ryle Gilbert Knowlton
OXFORD — Ryle Gilbert Knowlton, 63, of Kilroy Road, Oxford died unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at York Hospital, York, Pa.

He was born May 29, 1935 in Windsor, the son of Raymond and Dora (Cleveland) Knowlton.

He was married to Lila L. Ward, June 4, 1955, in Ouaquaga.

Mr. Knowlton had been a 29-year resident of Unadilla, until moving to Oxford a year ago.

He was a retired employee of Great American Food Stores of Norwich, following 41 years of service, and also was employed for three years at the Oasis Motor Lodge in Oneonta. He also performed volunteer services for the Chenango County Office of the Aging.

He was an active member and presently a deacon of the Unadilla Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Lila L. Knowlton of Oxford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Debra Knowlton of Otego and Mark and Deborah Knowlton of Dover, Pa.; a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Thomas Burke of Berkshire; two sisters, Flora Scott and Ida Burdick of Sidney; also 13 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Knowlton.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at the Unadilla Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul D. Furniss, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 112 Main St., Unadilla, Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at their convenience. The family will be in attendance Tuesday evening from 7 to 9.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Batptist Church.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Amy C. Leonard
WEST WINFIELD — Amy C. Leonard, 92, passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Langdon Ames, in Richfield Springs.

She was born Aug. 29, 1906 in Ava, the daughter of Edwin and Gertrude Dorn Congdon.

She was a graduate of Ilion High School and Practical Bible School, Binghamton.

Amy married Arthur Leonard Sept. 9, 1929, in North Columbia.

Mrs. Leonard was a member of the North Columbia Methodist Church and its Higher Trail Class, and was also a member of Home Bureau.

Amy helped her husband with the operation of their farm and brought her children up. She had many talents, and was a well-respected seamstress, making several wedding gowns for family and friends.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her twins, a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Langdon Ames of Richfield Springs; son and daughter-in-law, Arthur Edwin and Rose Leonard of Perth; grandchildren and spouses, Douglas and Linda Ames, Bradley and Ruth Ames, Gregory and Joan Ames, Sharon and Jim Decker, Carol and Tim Wright, Janet and Jim Sylvester, Timothy and Lori Leonard, Michael and Alicia Leonard, Amy and Eric Hines, Karyn Leonard, Chad Leonard; 22 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gertrude Hane of Trumansburg.

She was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters.

The funeral will be Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at noon at the Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home, West Winfield. Interment will be in the West Winfield Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday from 10 a.m. until funeral time.

The family wishes to thank Otsego County Public Health, especially Sue Corse, Denise Mathews, Rosie Searles and Lori Pecararo, and offers a special thanks to Herkimer County Hospice and Linda Sterling for her compassion and friendship.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Richfield Springs Bible Church or Herkimer County Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Josephine `Josie' Vitale
JEFFERSON — Mrs. Josephine "Josie" Vitale, 83, of Dugway Road died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, at Bassett Healthcare of Schoharie County in Cobleskill.

Mrs. Vitale was born June 16, 1915 in the Bronx, the daughter of Frank and Louise (Favalora) Puglisi.

Mrs. Vitale moved to Brooklyn at the age of 2. Later, when she married Benjamin Vitale on April 23, 1939, she moved to Queens Village. She was a seamstress before becoming a full-time homemaker.

In 1972, Mrs. Vitale became a resident of  Jefferson, and lived the remainder of her life there. Josie served as treasurer of the Summit Grange, chairwoman of the C.W.A. Committee of the Pomona Grange, a member of the Charlotteville Homemakers and of the senior citizens club. She also belonged to the women's ceramics group, and served as an inspector for the Board of Elections in Charlotteville.

Mrs. Vitale was a communicant of St. Anna's Catholic Church in Summit.

Survivors include three daughters, Loretta Pezzella of Rocky Point, Joann Wiggan of Burbank,  Calif. and Louise DeCaro of Cedar Knolls, N.J.; four sons, Joseph Vitale of  Jefferson, Frank Vitale and Thomas Vitale, both of Shirley, and Philip Vitale of Rocky Point; one sister, Tina Felcetto of Queens Village; and 17 grandchildren; and many wonderful friends.

Her husband, Benjamin F. Vitale, predeceased her Feb. 18, 1981.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at St. Anna's Catholic Church, Route 10, Summit. Celebrant will be Father Edward Golding. Calling hours will be held at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill, on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The Summit Grange will have a service at 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery,  Jefferson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, the Charlotteville Volunteer Fire Department or the Summit Grange.

Victor D. Lockwood
UNADILLA — Victor D. Lockwood, 83, of Old Hill Road, Unadilla, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born April 25, 1915, in Unadilla, the son of Louis and Angeline (DeForest) Lockwood.

He was a graduate of Sidney High School, Class of 1932, and the United States Army Postal School at Camp Lee, Va.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army.

He was married to M. Madalin Aiken, May 31, 1971, at the First Baptist Church in Sidney.

He was a lifelong Unadilla resident and retired in 1972, as assistant postmaster of the Sidney post office, following 38 years of service. His hobbies and interests included archeology, history, arms collecting, reading, and family genealogy.

Mr. Lockwood was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sidney, Mid State Arms Collectors Association, a life member of Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post No. 183 in Sidney, NRA, Delaware County Historical Association of Delhi, Upper Susquehanna Archeological Society of Otego, a former member of both the Sidney and Oneonta Historical Associations and a former member and past president of the Chenango Chapter of the N.Y.S. Archeological Association in Norwich.

He is survived by his wife, M. Madalin Lockwood of Unadilla; a brother-in-law and his wife, Arthur and Helen Aikens of Hamden; a niece and her husband, Ann and Richard Liddle of Andes; two great-nephews; several cousins; and a very special friend, Donnie Pierce of Unadilla.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at Sand Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, with the Rev. David D. Fraher, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sidney, officiating.

A military service will follow, conducted by the Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post No. 183 of Sidney.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, Sidney.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Owen L. Clute
COOPERSTOWN — Owen L. Clute, 79, of Hyde Park, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany.

He was born Jan. 3, 1919, to Elmer L. and Alice F. Clute in Oneonta. He attended Plains grade school and graduated from Oneonta High School.

He married Dorothy C. Comstock in August 1940, at Cooperstown Junction, who survives. He's also survived by two daughters, Susan M. Ross of Nice,  Calif., and Marguerite Clute Chow; one grandson, Gavin Owen Chow of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Clute worked at (the former) Bendix Scintilla plant in Sidney until he was drafted in December 1943. He served in the European Theater as a radio technician (sergeant) in the United States Army. After receiving his discharge, he attended Hartwick College under the G.I. Bill and was valedictorian of his college class.

He worked for many years in the Medical Research Department of the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital.

He had served on the school board of Milford Central School. He was active in the Civil Defense movement in Otsego County after World War II.

He was a hiker and bird watcher, belonging for a time to both the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Audubon Society. He also was a former member of the Milford United Methodist Church.

He was an amateur radio operator, exhibiting his first homemade set in the first science fair at Oneonta High School. After retiring from Bassett, he became active in both the Cooperstown and the Oneonta Ham-radio clubs.

By his request his body will be cremated. A memorial service will be planned later.

Norman Wasson
BREAKABEEN — Norman Wasson, 68, of Route 30, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County, Cobleskill, following a short illness.

Mr. Wasson was born on June 18, 1930, in Oneonta, a son of Elmer and Helen Grosse Wasson.

He was a retired laborer for the town of Fulton Highway Department.

Surviving Mr. Wasson are his three daughters, Betty  Jackson of Fultonham, Mary Jane Lamont of Breakabeen and Sherry Lamont of Fultonham; three sisters, Betty Vaccaro of Scotia, Irma Harrington of Allegany and Pauline Hough of Oneonta; two brothers, Albert Hough of Maryland and Kenneth Hough of Ohio; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 63 River St., Middleburgh, with the Rev. Neil Irwin, pastor of the North Blenheim United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Keyserkill Cemetery, Middleburgh.

A calling hour will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral on Thursday morning.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Schoharie County Unit, P.O. Box 877, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043.

Harry D. Craft
BLOOMVILLE — Harry D. Craft, 46, of Bloomville, passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, in Houston,  Texas.

He was born May 13, 1952, in Delhi, the son of the late Douglas and Mabel (Veen) Craft.

On Sept. 19, 1975, he married Roxanne (Clark) Craft in Bloomville.

Harry was employed as a tractor-trailer driver for the Daily Express Company in Carlisle, Pa.

He was a graduate of South Kortright Central School and a member of the Bloomville United Methodist Church.

His wife, Roxanne, and two sons, Casey and Harry Craft, all of Bloomville, survive him. He is also survived by three brothers, Brad, Randy and Danny, all of Bloomville; his grandmother, Evelyn Craft of Delhi; as well as nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart. The funeral will be held on Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Bloomville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clinton Lunt officiating, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Harriet `Peg' Lee
SIDNEY — Harriet "Peg" Lee, 68, of 50 East Main St., Sidney, passed away unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

She was born March 29, 1930, in Cannonsville. Peg was the daughter of the late John and Gladys Bonker Lee.

Peg was a senior regent for the Women of the Moose Chapter 502, Sidney, and a member of the Charles L. Jacobi Post 183 American Legion Auxiliary and the R.H. Arrandale Post 7914 V.F.W. Auxiliary.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Yvonne Spry Jr. of Groton; three sisters, Mrs. Dixie Charles of Deposit, Mrs. Judy Liberati of Atlanta, Ga., and Mrs. Janie Peck of Masonville; two brothers, William Lee of Deposit and Walter Lee of Mamaroneck; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her son, David Spry.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Robert Richardson, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, Groton, officiating. Burial will be at the family's convenience in the Laurel Hill Cem"-etery, Deposit.

The Women of the Moose will conduct ritualistic services prior to the memorial service Friday at the funeral home.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, N.Y. 13838 or to the Women of the Moose, 20 East Main St., Sidney, N.Y. 13838.
