Paul W. Brown
COLUMBUS — Paul W. Brown, 56, of the town of Columbus, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at home in the town of Columbus.

He was born Nov. 16, 1941, in the town of Columbus, the son of Donald R. and Norma (Edmonds) Brown, who survives him.

His childhood was spent in the town of Columbus. He graduated from New Berlin Central School.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters, Rodger and Judy Brown of New Berlin, Barbara and Harry Avery of New Berlin and David and Jayne Brown of the town of Columbus; and nieces and nephews, Stephen Brown, Denise Talbot, Donald Greco, Maria Wilcox, Michael Greco, Stanley Avery, Kathryn Lloyd and Megan Brown.

He was predeceased by a sister, Joanne Brown in 1958.

He was a truck driver, carrying milk for Charles Husted.

Paul grew strawberries and giant pumpkins and was a member of the NYS Pumpkin Growers Association. His largest pumpkin weighed 819 pounds and won first place in the state in 1995.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler, of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, officiating. Interment will be in the Columbus Corners Cemetery, town of Columbus.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Berlin Emergency, New Berlin; the New Berlin Library, New Berlin; or the charity of choice.

Leo Claude Dye
NEW BERLIN — Leo Claude Dye, 79, of New Berlin, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, in Cooperstown.

He was born Oct. 24, 1919, in West Edmeston, the son of Lenzo C. and Bessie Pearl (Crandall) Dye.

He married Eleanor Williams Dye on Sept. 30, 1945, who still survives.

He spent his childhood in New Berlin.

He graduated from New Berlin Central School in 1938.

He retired in April 1982 from Norwich Eaton Pharmaceuticals, Norwich.

He was a member of Phoebus Lodge No. 82 F&AM. He also enjoyed playing golf.

He is survived by his children, Terry Richard Dye of Troy and Julia Diane Dye of New Berlin; his sisters, Mrs. Charles (Bernice) Loomis, Mrs. Max (Winifred) Hilts, Mrs. Everett (Betty) Fralick and Mrs. Stanley (Josephine) Mead.

He was predeceased by one son, Terrance Leo Dye, on May 23, 1948.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at 11 a.m., at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with Pastor Ron Fralick officiating.

Interment will be in St. Andrews Cemetery, New Berlin.

Calling hours are on Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Emergency Squad or the Pittsfield Fire Department, Pittsfield.

Gertrude Scudder
ARKVILLE — Gertrude Frances Scudder, 76, of Arkville, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Jan. 18, 1922, in Somerville, Mass., the daughter of John Thomas Yeo and Mary Ellen Richardson.

She married Glenford Scudder on Nov. 5, 1956, at Concord, N.H. He died Feb. 11, 1993.

She was a seamstress and had worked for Eureka Tent, Walton, for several years.

The past 40 years she has lived in the Roxbury-Arkville area.

She is survived by one daughter, Anne Maxim of Arkville; two grandsons, Matthew and Jarrod; two sisters, Genevieve "Jane" Bradely and Mary Penney; and two brothers, Thomas and Edward Yeo.

She was predeceased by two brothers, John P. Yeo and William Yeo; and two sisters, Rose E. Donovan and Evelyn Metcalf.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. John Burns officiating. Burial will be in the Halcottsville Cemetery, Halcottsville.

Calling hours are Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Arnold Whitehill Sr.
UNADILLA — Arnold G. Whitehill Sr., 80, died on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

He was predeceased by his wife, Helen, in 1984.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Antonia Gascon of Verona Beach, Stella and Leon Ryan of Oxford, Larry and Carol Whitehill of Oxford, Lona and Ken Hartwell of Guilford, Arnold Jr. and Marta Whitehill of Oxford, Sheldon and Portia Whitehill of Unadilla, Francis and Maxine Whitehill of Oxford, and Henry and Margaret Whitehill of Gilbertsville. He is also survived by his companion, Emma Conly of Unadilla; his brother, Ivan Whitehill; 27 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren.

Arnold was a farmer in Unadilla all of his life.

Visiting hours are Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Joyce Funeral Home Inc., Main Street, Unadilla.

Religious service will be conducted on Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Nelson Parks of South New Berlin officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Contributions in memory of Arnold G. Whitehill Sr. to Unadilla Emergency Squad are appreciated.

Stuart Hurlburt Sr.
ONEONTA — Mr. Stuart Adams Hurlburt Sr., 69, of River Road, county Highway 48, Oneonta, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at the Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

Stuart was taken ill at his town of Otego farm home, Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, and was taken to A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta. Later on Monday, he was taken to the Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

He was born Feb. 19, 1929, at Parschall Hospital, Oneonta. He was the son of the late Stuart J. Hurlburt and Helen E. (Adams) Hurlburt.

Stuart A. Hurlburt and Fonda Marie Sprecco were married on June 8, 1950, in Laurens. Stuart and Fonda had been married for 48 years.

Stuart's life has been in the township of Otego. Basically he had lived at and, in later years after the death of his father, owned and operated the Hurlburt Family Farm on River Road, town of Otego, since 1957.

Stuart attended and graduated from Otego Central School, Class of 1947. He attended Hartwick College here in Oneonta for one year.

Stuart was a Mason having been a former member of the Otego Union Lodge F&AM. He served the Otego Lodge in all offices with the Lodge and was a former past master of the Otego Lodge. Stuart, in masonic affiliations, was well-known for ability to commit to his memory all of the rituals concerning Masonry. One of his most respected oral deliveries for masonry was his capable and meaningful delivery of the funeral ritual for deceased masons. In recent years, when the Otego Union Lodge F&AM affiliated with Oneonta Lodge F&AM No. 466, Stuart was a member of the Oneonta Lodge.

He was a 47-year member of the Otego Fire Department. In the years of origin of the Otego Emergency Squad, Stuart was a former captain of the squad. At death he was the current president of the board of trustees for the Otego Evergreen Cemetery Association.

He currently was a member of the Dairylea Corp. as well as having owned and operated one of the larger dairy-crop farms in the Susquehanna Valley.

Stuart A. Hurlburt Sr. is survived by his wife, Fonda M. Hurlburt at the Hurlburt Home, town of Otego; daughters, Karen Brown and her husband, Douglas, of Otego, Tammy Fankhauser and her husband, Ernie, of Hurley and Lorrian Turner of Schenectady; sons, Stuart Hurlburt Jr. and his wife, Su-Anne, of Otego, David Hurlburt his wife, Judy, of Oneonta and Douglas Hurlburt and his wife, Sarah, of Otego; his brother, Millard B. Hurlburt and his wife, Dorothy, of Oneonta, R.D. No. 2; a nephew, Shawn B. Hurlburt of Otego; one uncle, "Jed" John E. Hurlburt Sr. of Otego; Jed's children, John, Janet, Jim and Joe and their children and their spouses; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Stuart was predeceased by a grandson, Michael J. Hurlburt, on Dec. 5, 1997.

Stuart A. Hurlburt's family is respecting his personal wishes at death. He had requested no formal funeral or burial service and that there be no visitation at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego. His body will be cremated in the Hillington Crematory in Morris.

Family and friends are also requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the Michael J. Hurlburt Scholarship Fund at the Unatego Central School, Route 7, Otego, N.Y. 13825.

The Hurlburt family will receive family and friends at the Hurlburt Home, River Road, town of Otego, at the convenience of the people.

Life appreciation services are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Eleanor L. Putnam
WORCESTER — Eleanor L. Putnam, 79, of Worcester, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at her residence after a lengthy illness.

She was born June 1, 1919, in Maryland, the daughter of Orville and Bessie (Willsey) Putnam.

Miss Putnam was a graduate of the State Normal School in Oneonta. She pursued a career in teaching in which she obtained a master of science and education degree and taught at the following schools: Hollandbeck, Guilford, Middleburgh, Fort Plain, Canajoharie and the Gansevoort School in Rome. In 1981, she retired and moved to Worcester.

Miss Putnam was a member of the Worcester First Presbyterian Church, the National Society Daughters of American Revolution, Iroquois Chapter, the NYS Retired Teachers Association and was a 65-year member of the Worcester Grange No. 1274.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Philip K. and Kathleen Putnam of McGraw; two nephews, Frank Putnam of California and Warren Putnam of Oregon; a niece, Mary Putnam-Johnshoy of Virginia; two great-nephews, Kevin Putnam of Virginia and Philip Putnam of Oregon; great-niece, Mary Lynn Putnam of Rhode Island; stepnephew, Roger Bonsteel of Kingston; three stepnieces, Elizabeth Wiggans of Maryland, Susan Goodrich of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Deborah Gebczyk of Auburn; and her five cats.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

A graveside committal service will take place at 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

There will also be a memorial service on Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at 2 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, 148 Main St., Worcester, the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor, will be officiating at both the graveside and memorial services.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in memory of Miss Putnam to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Kenneth Hammond
NISKAYUNA — Kenneth F. Hammond, 92, of Regent Street, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, at St. Clare's Hospital, Schenectady, after a long illness.

He was born in Whitehall. Mr. Hammond moved to Oneonta in 1920, and was a 1922 graduate of Oneonta High School.

He worked for the Delaware & Hudson Railroad at its Oneonta office where he was secretary/treasurer of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks. In 1958, he moved to Niskayuna and was transferred to the D&H Plaza Building in Albany. There he was supervisor of working agreements in the transportation department until retiring in 1970.

Mr. Hammond was a Boy Scout leader in Oneonta. He also was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta and a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Schenectady.

His wife, Madolyn Todd Hammond, whom he married Sept. 20, 1929, died in 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Whitmarsh of Niskayuna; a brother, Edwin Harold Hammond of Wassiac; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be private. Burial will be in North Granville Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, or to Faith United Methodist Church, Schenectady.

Arrangements are by the Baxter-Andrew Funeral Home, Schenectady.

Kathlyne V. Haight
ROXBURY — Kathlyne V. Haight, 79, of Roxbury, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at University Hospital, Syracuse.

She was born March 26, 1919, in Stamford, the daughter of Jeremiah Snyder and Myrtle Reed.

She married Kendall B. Haight, Jan. 10, 1938, in Hobart. He died April 2, 1998.

She assisted her husband on a dairy farm from 1938 to 1962. Following that she was a cafeteria manager for Roxbury Central School.

She received a certification from the University of Nebraska in accounting and bookkeeping.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Frann and Marc Flatt of Syracuse; one grandson, Kial Flatt; one granddaughter, Shannon Flatt; three sisters, Belvia West of Laurens, Gloria Peterson of Beaver, Pa., and Elsie Langlois of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at 3 p.m., at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. John Burns officiating. Burial will be in Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Calling hours are Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home.

Contributions may be made in memory of Kathlyne to the American Lung Association.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
