Martin Rifenbark
DELHI — Martin Rifenbark, 86, formerly of Otego, died Nov. 7, 1998, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

He was born Nov. 19, 1911, in Colliersville, the son of Leroy John and Esther (Allen) Rifenbark.

He is survived by his loving nieces and nephews, Allen Beebe of Windsor, Conn., William Beebe of Malvern, Pa., Robert Blaylock of San Diego,  Calif., Virginia Nichols of Gaithersburg, Md., Robert Baldwin of Rensselaer, Crawford Millen of Norfolk, Va., and Sandra Harrison of Ocala, Fla.

He was predeceased by six sisters and one brother, Mildred Blaylock, Anna Baldwin, Blanche Estabrook, Mary Rifenbark, Mabel Millen, Amelia Beebe and Allen Rifenbark.

He ran a successful newspaper route in Otego for many years.

Funeral services will be held in Evergreen Cemetery, Otego, on Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Allen Hatch, pastor of the Otego Baptist Church, officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford.

Glenn F. Fuller
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Glenn F. "Junior" Fuller, 65, of Brighton Road passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at the home of his son, Glenn Jr., in Leonardsville.

He was born on Feb. 23, 1933 in Edmeston, the son of Mildred Greene Fuller and the late Glenn F. Fuller Sr.

Glenn was raised and educated in Edmeston.

On Dec. 23, 1955, he married Evelyn Jacobs in Burlington Flats.

For many years he worked as a farmer on various farms in the area.

He was a former member of the Richfield Springs Lion Club and a dedicated member of the Ronnie Smith Fan Club.

Surviving besides his wife, Evelyn, are his mother, Mildred; seven sons, Charles and his wife, Crystal Fuller of Kissimee, Fla., Roy and his wife, Kim Fuller of Herkimer, Glenn Jr. and his wife, Bonnie Fuller of Leonardsville, Donald and his wife, Debbie Fuller of New Berlin, Thomas Fuller of Rome, Michael and his wife, Karen Fuller, William and his wife, Shawn Fuller, all of Richfield Springs; two daughters, Glenda and her husband, Ray Dygert of Cherry Valley and Kristie Fuller of Richfield Springs; two sisters and their husbands, Mary and Charles Ray of Little Falls and Margaret and Dever Seamon of Richfield Springs; 17 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at 11 a.m. at J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs. Mr. Fuller will be placed in the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home private vault to await interment in the Burlington Flats Cemetery next spring.

Calling hours are tonight from 7 to 9.

The family wishes to thank Hospice Inc. and Christina Land for their care and compassion.

William Dale LaFond
CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. William Dale LaFond, 60, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at his home.

He was born in Pittsfield on March 16, 1938, to Donald and Ethel (Dunham) LaFond. He married Patricia Kendrot on Aug. 7, 1965, in Binghamton.

He was a 1958 graduate of the former New Berlin Central School. He worked for 18 years for Victory Markets/Great American. He owned and operated the Cherry Valley IGA for five years, and worked for the National Baseball Hall of Fame for eight years.

Mr. LaFond is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Kendrot LaFond of Cherry Valley; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Laurie K. and Thomas Drake of Albany, Renee S. LaFond of Albany, Amy V. and Frank Russo of Cherry Valley; a grandson, Noah W. Russo of Cherry Valley; two brothers, Burnett Donald LaFond of New Berlin and Michael LaFond of Bainbridge; many cousins, aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cooperstown with the Rev. John Roos officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery.

Calling hours will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. with prayers at 8 p.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Mr. LaFond's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Todd Gilchrist Hospitality Scholarship Fund, care of Pam Clark, RR2 Box 537B, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326, or the Cherry Valley Fire Department, Box 502, Cherry Valley, N.Y. 13320.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Joseph Shipway
CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Joseph Shipway, 90, or Cherry Valley died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at the Meadows. He had been ill for a few months.
He was born Sept. 2, 1908, in Cherry Valley, the son of William E. and Margaret (Doran) Shipway.

On Aug. 22, 1932, he married Gladys M. Hammond. She predeceased him on Feb. 13, 1996.

Mr. Shipway was a graduate of the former Cherry Valley Central School and Albany Business College. He owned and operated W.E. Shipway & Son for more than 50 years. He also was the Chevrolet and International Harvester Farm Machinery dealer for many years.

Mr. Shipway was active in many community organizations and special events. He served as trustee of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Cherry Valley and was a member of the Holy Name Society.

He was a longtime member of the Cherry Valley Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club. He served on the board of rirectors of the Cherry Valley Community Health Center and the Otsego Area Occupational Center.

Mr. Shipway is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, William and Elaine Shipway of Cherry Valley, David and Kathleen Shipway of Pulaski, Maurice and Barbara Shipway of Burnt Hills; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren (who will dearly miss their "Grampy Joe"); several nephews and a niece.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at 11 a.m., at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Cherry Valley with the Rev. Santino Titta officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Calling hours will take place today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., with a prayer service at 8 p.m., at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Mr. Shipway's memory may be made to the St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Cherry Valley and the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Peter Heller
WILLIAMSVILLE — Peter Heller, 78, an Austrian refugee who achieved an illustrious career as a professor of German and Comparative Literature in this country, died of pancreatic cancer in his home in Williamsville on Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998.

Professor Heller lived with his brother, Dr. Marc Heller, and family in Cooperstown for the last two months of his life while receiving treatment at M.I. Bassett Hospital.

As a boy growing up in a prominent Viennese family, Professor Heller attended an experimental school co-founded by Tiffany heiress Dorothy Burlingham, where his teachers included Eric and Joan Erikson. From age 9 to 12, he was psychoanalyzed by Anna Freud, and later published her account of his case history with his own critical commentary.

He fled Austria in 1938, living briefly in Liverpool, England. He was subsequently deported to Canada, where he was interned as an "enemy alien" with fellow Jews as well as Nazi prisoners of war for one and a half years.

Upon his release, he attended McGill University, where he received a Licentiate of Music and a B.A. He went on to receive his M.A. and Ph.D. in German and Comparative Literature from Columbia University, subsequently teaching at Columbia and Harvard University.

He was awarded a Commonwealth Professorship at the University of Massachusetts, where he taught for 14 years. He then became head of the German department and acting chairman of the department of Modern Languages at the State University College at Buffalo, retiring in 1991.

Recipient of numerous national awards, Professor Heller was a prolific author of books and essays on, among others, Nietzsche, Freud, Mann and Kafka. He published poetry and fiction throughout his career. He also maintained contact with the European Literary milieau, lecturing widely throughout Europe. He corresponded with and interviewed such figures as Gottfried Benn, Bertolt Brecht and Gunther Grass. He was a co-founder and director of the Institute of Atlantic Studies in Freiburg, Germany, director of NEH Summer Seminars for College and Secondary School Teachers and vice president of the Society for American Literature in German.

After the war, he often returned to the Austrian mountains where he vacationed as a boy to hike and fish.

His first marriage to Katrina Ely Burlingham ended in divorce. He was married to Christiane Menzel for 45 years.

He is survived by five children, Anne Heller of Cambridge, Mass., Joan Humphreys of Asheville, N.C., Vivian Heller of Red Hook, Stephen Heller and Eve Heller, both of Buffalo; and by his brother, Marc Heller of Cooperstown.

Charles W. Gelatt Jr.
EDMESTON — Charles W. Gelatt Jr., 46, of Edmeston, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 20, 1952, in Endicott. On May 1, 1981, in Edmeston, he married Grace Thomas, who survives.

He was a family care provider for the Broome Developmental Services in his home. He also enjoyed Moto-X racing with his children, Charlie, Dennis and Maverick.

He is survived by his wife, Grace, and his children, John, Danielle, Charles III, Dennis and Maverick; his parents, Charles and Jennie Gelatt Sr.; his brothers and sisters, Marjorie and Cecil Watts, Betty and Richard Sernka, Connie and Dave Eckert, Carl Gelatt, Cheryl and Mark Rittgers, Sharon Jarvis, Meradee and Daniel Shoellig, Randy and Susan Gelatt and Gary and Selina Gelatt; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home with Pastor Jay Henderson and the Rev. Gary Folz officiating.

Calling hours are from noon to service time on Wednesday. Burial will be in Edmeston Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a trust fund established for Charles III, Dennis and Maverick Gelatt, care of Central National Bank, Edmeston. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

There isn't one word to say how good our Dad is! We love you, and you are very loved by all of your family. We thank God for allowing us the chance to have known you, and to have felt your love in our lives. Love, JR, Danielle, Charlie III, Dennis and Mav.

Funeral arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Susan H. Galvin
CICERO — Susan H. Galvin, 51, of Sutton Drive, Cicero, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at Crouse Hospital from injuries sustained in a fall in her home on Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998.

She was a native of Hobart, and had lived in the Syracuse area since 1969. She had resided on Sutton Drive since 1979.

Mrs. Galvin received her associate's degree from Cazenovia College in 1967. She then studied and became a radiological technologist at the Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge. She worked for Dr. Geiger in North Syracuse for four years. For the past two years she has worked as a cook for the Cracker Barrel Restaurant in Cicero.

She was a member of the American Society of Radiological Technicians. She was a former committee chairperson for Troop 116 Boy Scouts out of James Harvey Spire American Legion Post 787, Cicero, and was also active with Pack 316 Cub Scouts out of Sacred Heart Church, Cicero. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Hobart.

She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Michael E. Galvin; two sons, Eric J. Galvin of Cicero and Marc W. Galvin of Lake Placid; her mother, Jane Hoy of Hobart; a sister, Barbara Joedicke of Hobart; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; one great-grandniece; and one great-grandnephew.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at 2:30 p.m., at the Fergerson Funeral Home, 215 South Main St., North Syracuse. Burial will be private at the family's convenience in Hobart.

Calling hours will be from noon to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to North Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 215, North Syracuse, N.Y. 13212.

Maurice L. Dunn
SIDNEY — Maurice L. Dunn, 82, of Sidney, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

Maurice was born to the late Merton and Lucia Rawson Dunn on Aug. 6, 1916, in Athelstane, Wis.

He was a supervisor at E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, for 20 years before retiring.

Maurice was a member of the Dad's of V.F.W. Post No. 99, Sidney, and a member of the Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post No. 7914, Sidney. He was a life member of the Lodge of the Elks No. 2175, Sidney. Maurice was a pilgrim member of the Loyal Order of Moose No. 277, Sidney.

Maurice is survived by his companion of 13 years, Leona Rossini of Sidney; his son, Merton Dunn of Syracuse; his stepson and and his wife, Bruce and Carol Michaels of Cranford, N.J.; his daughter, Myra Vigliotti of Baldwinsville; his sister, Gweneth  White of Athelstane, Wis.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m., at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

There will be a memorial service by the Lodge of the Elks at 7:15 p.m. and memorial service by the Loyal Order of Moose at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, at the funeral chapel.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Masland, of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, officiating. Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, Thursday, at 3 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Harriett Grant
SHARON SPRINGS — Harriett Grant, 60, of Sharon Springs, formerly of Milford, died Monday morning, Nov. 16, 1998, at the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill.

Harriett was born April 11, 1938, in Milford, the daughter of Cecil and Alta Elliott.

She was previously married to Robert Juhl in 1958, and the late Walter Grant in 1972.

Mrs. Grant was a member of the Milford Center Community Bible Church in Milford Center.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Chris Juhl of Milford; and a daughter and son-in-law, Tysha M. and Todd Hoose of New Berlin; five grandchildren, Missy, Alisa, Shawna, Santana and Nathaniel Juhl; and a sister, Margaret Juhl of Cherry Valley.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at the Bookhout Funeral Home with her pastor, the Rev. Stephen Fournier of the Milford Center Community Bible Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Milford Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Catherine Williams
MILFORD CENTER — Mrs. Catherine L. Williams, 70, of Milford Center, died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 17, 1998, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Clyde A. Williams Jr. and Cynthia, in Milford Center.

She was born on May 14, 1928, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Louis E. and Helen (Merritt) Harvey. She married Clyde A. Williams Sr. on March 20, 1947, in Toddsville. Mr. Williams died on March 21, 1997.

A lifelong area resident, Honey was raised in Toddsville and graduated with the Class of 1946, from Cooperstown High School. A farm mother and wife most of her life, she and her husband lived for 50 years in a house they built together on Banner Road in Milford Center and, up until 11 years ago, owned and operated a dairy farm formerly owned by Clyde Sr.'s father on Edson Road. Honey also worked as a bookkeeper for Empire Livestock in Oneonta and Milford Commission Sales.

Honey enjoyed music and during her high school years played the trumpet in the marching band and became the first woman to play in the Cooperstown Community Band.

She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Clyde A. Williams Jr. and his wife, Cynthia, and their children, Skye and Willow Rain, Randy Williams and his wife, Dawn, and their children, Heather, Crystal, Rebecca and Dustin, all of Milford Center, and Terry Williams of Troy, Pa.; four brothers, William Graham and his wife, Ann, of San Carlos,  Calif., Merritt Harvey and his wife, Elaine, of Toddsville, Louis Harvey Jr. of Austin,  Texas, and Donald Harvey and his wife, Mary, of Milford Center; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special lifelong friend, Louise Newell, formerly of Toddsville.

Honey was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth J. Kukenberger, who died on Sept. 12, 1980, and Lois M. Parshall, who died on July 8, 1996.

Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service to be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery with the Rev. Andrea  White, Spiritual Care Coordinator of the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, officiating.

At the request of the family, visiting hours today, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, will be private.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
