Mitchell G. (Mitch) Sprague
MARGARETVILLE — Mitchell G. (Mitch) Sprague, 57, of Margaretville died on Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

He was born June 3, 1941, in the town of Middletown, the son of John Sprague and Mary VanSteenburgh.

He married Barbara Smith on May 29, 1962, in North Bellmore.

He owned and operated Mitch Sprague Trucking Inc. for 25 years and was a lifelong area resident.

He was a member of Catskill Mountain Classic Car Club and took great pride in his 1956 Mercury. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had special love for his eight granchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Sprague of Margaretville; his mother, Mary Sprague of Margaretville; one son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Wendy Sprague of Fultonham; three daughters and son-in-laws, Penny and Greg Finch of Halcott Center, Joanne and Tom Stratton Jr. of Halcottsville and Melissa Sprague and friend, Larry Hull of Margaretville; eight grandchildren, Ryan, Samantha, Stacey Sprague, Sonya and Kristin Finch, Cassandra and Jamie Stratton and Mitchell Hull; nine sisters, Mrs. Beryl McGregor, Mrs. Doris Coss, Mrs. Beatrice Moore, Mrs. Shirley Yerry, Mrs. Betty Martin, Ms. Ruby Sprague, Ms. Freda Manon, Ms. Cheryl Manon and Ms. Janice Manon; three brothers, Clayton, Victor and Asher Sprague; several nieces and nephews; and his mother and father-in-law, Ralph and Ruth Smith of Margartville.

He was predeceased by one brother, John Sprague and one sister, Eleanor Decker.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at 1 p.m., at the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.

Following cremation burial will take place at Bedell Cemetery, Fleischmanns, at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions may be made to the Mitch Sprague Scholarship Fund care of Northern Catskills Occupational Center, Jump Brook Road, Grand Gorge.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Mary L. Stearns
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Mary L. Stearns, 76, formerly of Gilbertsville, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, in Fort Myers, Fla.

She was born April 14, 1922, in Jersey City, N.J., the daughter of Arthur T. Freer Sr. and Edna (Sperry) Freer.

She was married to Cecil Stearns on Feb. 16, 1941, in Gilbertsville. He passed away June 18, 1993.

Mary was a homemaker and mother and had been a longtime resident of Gilbertsville. She had been an active member of the First Presbyterian Chuch of Gilbertsvile and had served on several of the women's circles within the church.

She is survived by her children, Robert A. Stearns and his wife, Janet of Chardon, Ohio, Thomas N. Stearns and his wife, Nancy of Fair Haven, Vt., Marcia O'Neil and her husband, Nicholas of Fort Myers, Fla., James E. Stearns and his wife, Carolyn of Conyers, Ga., David F. Stearns of Otego; her sisters, Elizabeth Hull and Edna S. Freer, both of Gilbertsville; a brother, Arthur T. Freer Jr. and his wife, Millie of Sebring, Fla.; her 10 granchildren, who include Timothy and Benjamin Stearns of Chittenango, Christopher Stearns of Hudson, Ohio, Theodore Stearns of Pittsburgh, Pa., Jerry O'Neil of Atlanta, Ga., Nichole O'Neil of Fort Myers, Fla., Jacob Stearns of Fair Haven, Vt., Ashley and Rebecca Stearns of Conyers, Ga., and Mathew Stearns of Oneonta.

A memorial service will be held in the First Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville on Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Donald Boardman officiating. Interment will follow in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to either the American Cancer Society or the First Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville in her memory.

Local arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Charles I. Northup
ONEONTA — Charles I. Northup, 56, of Oneonta, passed away Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, of injuries sustained in a farm accident.
Mr. Northup was born June 24, 1942, in Oneonta, the son of James C. and Tressa (Tuttle) Northup, and was married to Linda Hall on March 28, 1964, in Oneonta. She died on Dec. 6, 1982. On July 4, 1987, he married Theresa "Sam" Graham in Oneonta.

He was a group leader for Amphenol in Sidney for 39 years. He was a member of the IAM Union No. 1529. He attended the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Sam; his father; his children, Denise and her husband, Wes Montgomery, of Greenfield, Timothy Northup and Kim Munson of Oneonta and Diane and her husband, Justin Munro, of Norwich; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene and Stephen  Johnson of Oneonta, Mary Jane and Larry Truax of Pittsfield; his brothers and sisters-in-law, James E. and Frances Northup and Glenn and Linda Northup, both of Byron; his grandchildren, Joshua and Stephanie Montgomery, Aryalynn Lynda Munro, and Craig and Jacob Manelius; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harold and Mary Graham and Lynn Hall; best friend, Edward Hughes; and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his mother, Tressa, his first wife, Linda, and her mother, Elizabeth Hall.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta with the Rev. William Bouton and the Rev. Joseph Fiske officiating. There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Intergenerational Ministries of First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Scott A. Smith
JORDANVILLE — Scott A. Smith, 36, of Jordanville Road, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born on April 2, 1962, in Cooperstown, a son of the late Russell L. and Stella Georgia Smith.

A lifelong area resident he was a graduate of Owen D. Young High School and the Modern Welding School. He was the owner and operator of Scott Smith Construction Company, Jordanville. Scott was a resident of Jordanville since 1985, coming from Van Hornesville.

On March 18, 1988, he married Erin Kicelemos Packard in their home in Jordanville.

Surviving besides his loving wife, Erin, are a daughter, Jacqueline A. Smith; a stepdaughter, Jessica M. Packard, both of Jordanville; one brother, James R. and his wife, Karen Smith, of Van Hornesville; two nephews, Todd and his wife, Michelle Smith, of Bethlehem, Ga., and James R. Smith Jr. of New York Mills.

Funeral service will be on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at 10 a.m. in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Wilde, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Springfield Center Cemetery.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m., in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs.

Memorial donations may be made to the Jacqueline A. Smith Trust Fund, care of Central National Bank, 34 East Main St., Richfield Springs, N.Y. 13439.

Arrangements are by J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Helen Gilbert
ARCADIA,  Calif. — Helen Hollander Gilbert passed away on July 30, 1998, in Arcadia,  Calif.

She was married to Erskine Gilbert of Gilbertsville, from 1971 until his death in 1976. They summered in Gilbertsville where Helen was an active member of the Episcopal Church. After Gil's death, Helen continued to come to Gilbertsville during the summer. She stayed with his sister, Anne Gilbert Mangold. Helen was her companion and friend until Anne's death.

She was a caring stepmother to Tim and Laurel Gilbert. She is also survived by a daughter, Susan Mackey of San Jose,  Calif., from a previous marriage; and two other stepchildren. She had two grandsons and 14 stepgrandchildren.

She will be greatly missed by Tim and Laurel and all those whose lives she touched during her time in Gilbertsville.

Peggy McChesney
COOPERSTOWN — Margaret Mary McChesney, 45, of Cooperstown, died Monday evening, Nov. 30, 1998, at home.
She was born on July 6, 1953, in Garden City, Long Island, a daughter of Colonel Edward K. and Katherine (Mahoney) Mikoloski. She married Dr. James D. McChesney on June 18, 1977, at the Martha Mary Chapel in Sudbury, Mass.

As a young child, Peggy lived and attended schools in Paris, France, and Alexandria, Va., and later graduated from the Putnam Catholic Academy in Putnam, Conn., while living in Webster, Mass. She then went on to attend Marymount College in Tarrytown, and Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., graduating from Quinsigamond College in Worcester, Mass. As a respiratory therapist, Peggy worked at Worcester City Hospital and the University of Massachusetts Medical Center until moving to Cooperstown in 1979.

Peggy was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, the New York State Historical Association, the Cooperstown Country Club, and the Cotillion Committee.

An avid sports enthusiast, she was founder of the Glimmerglass Triathalon and was one of the authors of the book "Running the Leatherstocking Trails." She also enjoyed tennis, golfing, scuba diving in the Caribbean and skiing in both the United States and Europe. Peggy was active with the Cooperstown Concert Series and served as a volunteer at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. She traveled extensively around the world, including Korea and most of Europe and had served as a medical volunteer in Africa. Peggy felt she led an active and blessed life and her enthusiasm as a devoted wife and mother will be greatly missed.

Peggy is survived by her husband of 21 years, James of Cooperstown; their two daughters, Mia Mary Kim McChesney and Dana Katherine McChesney, both of Cooperstown; her mother, Katherine (Mahoney) Mikoloski of Boylston, Mass.; her father, Colonel Edward K. Mikoloski of Providence, R.I.; her sister, Kathi Cataldo of Holmdell, N.J.; her brothers, Stanley Mikoloski of Grafton, Mass., and Vincent Mikoloski of Ventura,  Calif.; and their families.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown this evening, Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. when Peggy's family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made in Peggy's memory to Louis Busch Hager Cancer Treatment Center, care of Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Robert A. Woodcock
ONEONTA — Robert A. Woodcock, 68, of Oneonta, died on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at his residence.

He was born on Aug. 18, 1930, in Oneonta, the son of Leon E. and Myra (Schutt) Woodcock. He married Evelyn F. Rumenapp on April 16, 1949, in Oneonta.

Bob served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, and was discharged as an airman first class.

In 1992, he retired from the Oneonta City School System, where he was employed as a custodian for 20 years. Prior to that, he was employed for several years with the D&H RR.

Robert was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a 30-year member of the Oneonta Eagles FOE 1260. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing and horseshoes.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn F. Woodcock of Oneonta; his children and their spouses, Frank and Cheryl Woodcock Sr. of Oneonta, Leon E. and Dawn Woodcock of Orangeburg, Robert A. and Ann Woodcock of Scranton, Pa., and Donna and Steve  Johnson of Davenport Center; a brother and sister-in-law, Leon E. and Mary Woodcock of West Oneonta; his eight grandchildren, Gretchen, Frank Jr., Phillip, Nicholas, Jessica, Jamie and William Woodcock and Steven Johnson; and his mother-in-law, Katherine Ross of Oneonta. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours.

A service to celebrate the life of Robert A. Woodcock will be held Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at 3:30 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. William Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Raymond Williams
BAINBRIDGE — Raymond Williams, 69, of Bainbridge, passed away Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born June 1, 1929, to the late Bruce and Jennie Cole Williams in Walton.

Raymond served in the National Guard for five years.

He married Leta Fisk on May 3, 1952, in Walton.

Raymond was employed by E.C.D. of Bendix as a supervisor until he retired in 1982.

He is survived by his wife, Leta Williams of Bainbridge; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Carol Williams of Bainbridge and Allan and Terri Williams of Vinegrove, Ky.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Janice Morley of Sidney Center, Richard and Ella Morley of Sidney Center and Clifford Williams of Radcliff,  Calif.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Barbara Cronkhite of Binghamton and Janice and John Trimble of Los Banos,  Calif.; eight grandchildren, Shannon and Michelle Williams, Karisa Rowe, Amanda and James Via, and Jamie, Ryan and Lacey Barton Williams; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services are private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Cecilia Stewart
ONEONTA — Cecilia Stewart, 87, of Oneonta, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Hospital.

She was born Dec. 15, 1910, in Florence, Vt., the daughter of Michael J. and Mary M. (Martin) Gorman. She married Herbert Stewart on Dec. 23, 1950. He died on Feb. 24, 1964.

Mrs. Stewart was a registered nurse, and worked for many years at the Park Avenue Hospital in Rochester.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mary M. Gorman of Rutland, Vt.; a nephew and a niece, Larry Gorman of Rutland, Vt., and Mary Margaret Gorman of Greensboro, N.C.

She was predeceased by five brothers and sisters, including Mary Gorman, who resided in Oneonta for several years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Mary's Church. Burial will be on Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, in Calvary Cemetery, Rutland, Vt.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangments are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Jeffrey D. Ruffles
BINGHAMTON — Jeffrey D. Ruffles, 41, of Binghamton and formerly of Edmeston, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998.

He was born Nov. 9, 1957, in Brewster, the son of Richard B. and Elizabeth M. (Farrell) Ruffles.

Jeff attended the Edmeston Central School, and had recently been self-employed as a handyman in the Binghamton area. His family has many kind memories, such as his favorite songs and keen sense of humor.

He is survived by his son, Cory Ruffles of Otego; his mother, Betty Welch of West Edmeston; his father, Richard Ruffles of Danbury, Conn.; his three brothers, Richard, Farrell and Allen Ruffles; his sister, Pamela Simmons; numerous nephews and one niece; and additional friends and relatives including his companion, Judy.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at 4 p.m. with the Rev. John Buskey officiating at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jeff's memory to the Second Baptist Church Children's Programs. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.
