Bette J. Miller
PALM BAY, Fla. — Bette J. Miller, 74, of Palm Bay, Fla., died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Wuesthoff Hospital, Rockledge, Fla.

Mrs. Miller was born in Schoharie, she was a part-time resident in Florida since 1983. She moved to Brevard County in 1983 from Otego. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Otego Presbyterian Church and Satellite Beach United Methodist Church in Florida. She was a volunteer for Meals On Wheels, Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Fla., and at a hospital in Oneonta.

She is survived by her daughters, Pauline M. McLaud of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Linda Miller Cox of Lexington, Ky.; her sister, Pauline Winfield of Schenectady; her brother, William Knowles of Sidney; two granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial service will be Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Wylie-Baxley Rockledge Funeral Home, Rockledge, Fla.

Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4356 B. Fortune Place, West Melbourne, Fla. 32904-1532.

Norman F. Carr Jr.
ONEONTA — Chief Constable Norman F. Carr Jr., 54, died Thursday evening, Dec. 3, 1998, in the line of duty as a result of an automobile accident.
Norman was born June 1, 1944, in Oneonta, the son of Norman F. and Theda (Torry) Carr Sr.

He married Norma Wilday on June 24, 1978, in Milford.

Norman was an Army veteran who served in Vietnam. He was environmental conservation operating supervisor II for 30 years, chief town constable of the town of Oneonta for 11 years and worked with the Otsego County sheriff's marine patrol for seven years.

Norman was a volunteer with the Oneonta City Fire Department for 10 years, a forest warden with the New York State Forest Rangers and was a hunter safety instructor. Norman belonged to the Oneonta American Legion and the Delaware Shields.

Norman is survived by his wife of 20 years, Norma Carr of Oneonta; his daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Bryan Cuozzo, and two grandchildren, Timothy and Alicia Cuozzo, of Morris; his parents, Norman and Theda Carr Sr. of Oneonta; a sister, Evelyn Lower of Milford; a niece, Colleen and Nicholas Aufmuth and great-niece and nephew, Nicholas and Kara Aufmuth, of Fly Creek; a sister-in-law, Gloria and Robert Mann of Bradenton, Fla.; and a nephew, Todd and Stacia Mann of Orlando, Fla.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, with Rev. Longobucco officiating. Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery with a full military committal service.

The family will receive friends at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, Sunday from 6-9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Norman F. Carr Jr. Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box A, West Oneonta, N.Y. 13861.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Lidie Mackie
FLY CREEK — Lidie McWhinney Mackie, 75, of Fly Creek, died peacefully at her home on Thursday evening, Dec. 3, 1998.

Born on Aug. 1, 1923, she was the only child of Sylvester Morgan Smith and Dolio Adams of Cedarhurst, Long Island.

Mrs. Mackie attended the University of North Carolina Women's College at Greensboro at age 16. At age 20, she was the youngest and one of the first female graduates of Fordham Law School (1944). She served as a judicial clerk for a year before she married Dr. Robert W. Mackie. During her husband's 24-year career as a U.S. Navy surgeon, Mrs. Mackie was an active volunteer in the USO and Red Cross offices in Massachusetts, California, Maryland, Virginia, Japan and New York.

During their five-year tour of duty in Japan, Mrs. Mackie became fluent in the Japanese language and mastered the fine art of floral decoration and gourmet Japanese cooking.

Mrs. Mackie moved her family to Cooperstown in 1964. Her contributions to the community included service as chairman of the Otsego County Chapter of the American Red Cross, active involvement with the Parent Teacher's Association, Cooperstown Women's Club, Lake and Valley Garden Club and Cub Scouts of America. She was elected twice as justice for the town of Otsego. Mrs. Mackie was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Robert W. Mackie of Fly Creek; her five children, Angus Mackie of Cooperstown, Dr. Robert W. Mackie Jr. of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jennie Mackie Johannesen, PAC, of Fly Creek, Tom Mackie, JD, of Sudbury, Mass., Commander Steven (Bo) Mackie, USN, of Norfolk, Va.; and her 10 grandchildren, Kate and Alex Johannesen and Sarah, Erin, Joseph, Leska, Callie, Samuel, Morgan and Kyle Mackie.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown with the Very Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector, officiating.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Fly Creek Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 41, Fly Creek, N.Y. 13337-0041; or the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326-0322.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Helen Zubatkin
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Helen Zubatkin, 78, of Cooper Lane Apartments, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at home.

She was born on Oct. 30, 1920, in Brooklyn, a daughter of Jacob and Bertha (Karp) Schwartz.

She married Julius Zubatkin on March 8, 1948, in Brooklyn. Mr. Zubatkin died on June 4, 1990.

A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, Helen relocated to Cooperstown six years ago to be near her daughters. She enjoyed going to the Cooperstown Senior Citizens' lunch site at Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown and served as secretary to this organization. Helen was of the Jewish faith and was very devoted to her grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Carol and Bruce Bennett of Hartwick and Linda Zubatkin of Milford; one son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Calixta Zubatkin of Brooklyn; two grandsons, Justin and Jacob Bennett; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandsons; one sister and brother-in-law, Marlene and Herbie Sobrane of Florida; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews in Florida, Nevada and New York.

A Jewish funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at the Kirschenbaum Bros. Funeral Home in Brooklyn. Burial will follow at the Mount Hebron Cemetery in Flushing.

Helen's family will be sitting shiva on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at the home of Carol and Bruce Bennett, 210 Christian Hill Road in Hartwick.

A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown with the Very Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Mildred Kaufer
STAMFORD — Mildred Olive Kaufer, 96, died suddenly on Dec. 3, 1998, at Robinson Terrace.

She was an area resident for one year, formerly of Fairlawn, N.J., and Jamaica, Queens.

She was retired from her position as credit manager for The New York Times, advertising division.

She is survived by her sister, Florence Charlton of Greenville, N.C.; a brother, Edwin of Anaheim,  Calif.; three nephews, six nieces and many loving great- and great-great nieces and nephews. Her niece, Claire Chastaine, is a resident of Stamford.

Friends may call at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main, (corner of Liberty) in Stamford on Saturday between 6 and 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Dec. 6, at noon at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Stamford.

Burial will be Monday, Dec. 7, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Brooklyn at 1 p.m.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the William A. Tari Funeral Home, Stamford.

Nancy Darling
BAINBRIDGE — Nancy Darling, 48, of Bainbridge passed away Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Nancy was born to Harry and Doris Upright Johnston on Jan. 17, 1950, in Oneonta.

She married Philip A. Darling, Jan. 25, 1969, in Sidney.

Nancy was a secretary for the Bainbridge-Guilford High School. She was a former member of the Bainbridge Recreation Club, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Philip "Chick" Darling of Bainbridge; her mother, Doris Johnston of Sidney; two daughters and sons-in-law, Allison and Eric Foster of Frankfort and Andrea and Charles Mazor of Erieville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Sheila Johnston of Binghamton and Tony and Linda Johnston of Binghamton; one sister and brother-in-law, Christy and Harold Sisson of Addison; and two brothers-in-law, Keith and Gary Darling of Bainbridge. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Nancy was predeceased by her father, Harry Johnston, son, Dana Darling, and special friend, Kathy Arotsky.

Friends may call Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney from 7 to 9 p.m.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at the First Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge at 2 p.m. The Rev. Susan Zink will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Nancy's name to the Hospice of Chenango County or the First Presbyterian Church of Bainbridge Memorial Fund.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Austinia Decker
SHERBURNE — Austinia G. "Tina East" Decker, 59, of Sherburne passed away Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at the General Hospital in Binghamton.

She was born to Austin and Ruth Murwin on Sept. 25, 1939, in Butternuts.

Tina was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in Norwich.

She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Susan Decker of Oneonta and Marty and Alison Decker of Magnolia, Del.; one daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Dale Oliver of Mount Upton; three brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Florence Murwin of  South Carolina; Leroy Murwin of New York and Gerald and Susan Murwin of  South Carolina; two sisters, Zada Ruff of Tennessee and Geni Leslie of California; six grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, Route 12 South, Norwich, on Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at 2 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Charles H. Loomis Sr.
AMSTERDAM — Charles H. Loomis Sr. of the New Amsterdam Apartments, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam, following a long illness.

He was born on May 21, 1905, in Burlington Flats, Otsego County, the son of William and Jennie Burdick Loomis. He resided in Burlington Flats until moving to Amsterdam in 1986.

Mr. Loomis was employed as a machinist by Bendix Aviation of Utica for many years, and was also a self-employed dairy farmer in Burlington Flats, retiring several years ago.

He was first married on Feb. 19, 1933, to Mary C. Lent. She died in February 1977. On March 26, 1983, he was married to Margaret G. Smith, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Charles H. Loomis Jr., of Mayfield; a daughter, Elizabeth Loomis-Reagan of Amsterdam; a stepson, John Becker of Ilion; two sisters, Myrta Roberts of West Winfield and Karene Mason of Scotia; four grandchildren; one stepgrandson; one stepgranddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. The interment will be in the Burlington Flats Cemetery in the spring.

The calling hours will be Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to the Loomis Brothers Scholarship Fund of Cornell University of the Montgomery County SPCA, care of the funeral home.

Barbara S. Mathewson
ONEONTA — Mrs. Barbara S. Mathewson, 80, of Oneonta died Sunday morning, Dec. 6, 1998, at the Oneonta Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born in Grand Gorge, Sept. 15, 1918, the daughter of J.L. and Sarah (Proper) Swart.

She married Gordon R. Mathewson on May 3, 1941, in Oneonta. Mr. Mathewson died May 20, 1959.

Barbara was a retired customer representative for the New York Telephone Company. She had previously worked as an insurance underwriter and customer representative for the former Howard E. Brown Insurance Agency, the Gordon B. Roberts Agency and also the Mang Insurance Agency.

Barbara was a member of the First Methodist Church, Oneonta, and also a member of the Rebecca Circle, Oneonta.

She is survived by one son, Russell Mathewson of Troy; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Schuyler Swart of Oneonta and Victor and Dorothy Swart of Syracuse; one grandson and his wife, James and Tracy Mathewson of Schenectady; and several nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Barbara S. Mathewson will be held on Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, or to the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905, or to the charity of one's choice in loving memory of Barbara S. Mathewson.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Alment Roe
HARPERSFIELD — Alment Roe, 79, of Harpersfield died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at the Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

He was born March 31, 1919, in Worcester, the son of Charles and Avis Morell Roe.

He married the late Marjorie DuBois in 1940, in Hobart.

He was a veteran of the United States Army.

He was a supervisor at Catskill Craftsmen in Stamford for 23 years. He was a lifelong area resident.

He was a member of the V.F.W. Post, Stamford and Col. Harper Grange, Harpersfield.

He is survived by a son, Gorden Roe of Stamford; a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Janet Roe of Poughkeepsie; a daughter and son-in-law, Ray and Alfred Rogers of Harpersfield; six granddaughters; four great-granddaugters; two great-grandsons; and a sister, Geneveieve Collins of Hobart.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Stephen Herring of the Stamford Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Calling hours are tonight from 7 to 9 at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Stamford Rescue Squad or the Davenport First Responders.

Arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
