Edson L. Ruff
UNADILLA — Edson L. Ruff, 63, of 6 Bridge St., Unadilla died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at his home.

He was born March 13, 1935, in Delhi, the son of Louis and Lillian (Terry) Ruff.

He was married to Theresa Ann Zabo, Nov. 24, 1956, in Tribes Hill.

He has been a resident of Unadilla for several years and was a self-employed tree surgeon and logger. He also was a union construction employee, involved in many highway and tunnel projects. He was a great outdoorsman, enjoying the woods, fishing and hunting.

Edson was a member of the Laborers Union Local No. 754 of Chestnut Ridge and Sidney Elks Lodge No. 2175.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa of Unadilla; five sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Melanie Ruff of Unadilla, Robert and Sheri Ruff of Sidney, Russell and Heidi Ruff of Bainbridge, Jonathan and Ronda Ruff of Bainbridge and Todd Ruff of Unadilla; a daughter, Patricia Groat of Unadilla; his stepmother, Mildred Camidge of Harrington, Del.; two sisters, Bontia Scarfo of Glen Cove and Barbara Francati of Hampstead, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, William Ruff.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla with the Rev. Gordon A. Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Lynn J. Thompson
CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Lynn J. Thompson, 87, passed away Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at the Meadows.

He was born May 24, 1911, in South Valley, the son of Milton and Carrie (Thompson) Thompson.

On May 23, 1936, he married Katherine Cole in the Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley. She predeceased him in 1989.

A lifelong area resident, Mr. Thompson worked for the D&H Railroad for 13 years and 33 years at Remington Arms, Ilion. He was the president of the Cherry Valley Fish and Game Club for more than 40 years, a member of the Rotary, a vestryman of the Grace Episcopal Church in Cherry Valley, a member of the Cherry Valley Chamber of Commerce, former president of the Otsego Federation of Sportsmen, a member of the Boy Scouts, earning a Council Honor Award, and the mayor of Cherry Valley from 1965-1989.

Mr. Thompson is survived by three sons, Fred Thompson of Stratford, James Thompson of Milford and Lyle Thompson of Cherry Valley; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Thompson was predeceased by three brothers, Edward, LaVerne and Harold, and two sisters, Viola and Buelah.

Cremation took place at The Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at the Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Alvin Burnworth, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Thompson's memory may be made to the Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley, Cherry Valley Emergency Squad, Cherry Valley Fire Department or the Cherry Valley Fish and Game Club.

Lynn was an avid sportsman. He will be remembered by his family and friends as proudly serving his community in many ways.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Raymond H. Vosburgh Sr.
UNADILLA — Raymond H. Vosburgh Sr., 81, of State Highway 7, Unadilla died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born Aug. 30, 1917, in the town of Esperance, the son of Blaine and Addie (Karker) Vosburgh.

He was married to Pauline Wright, Aug. 30, 1937, in Walton. Mrs. Vosburgh died April 2, 1985.

Mr. Vosburgh was a lifelong Tri-Town area resident and at one time was employed at the former Carr's Milk Co. and Bendix Corp. of Sidney. He was a retired employee of the Maintenance Department of the New York State Police at Troop C in Unadilla.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond Jr. and Laurence Vosburgh of Bainbridge; a sister-in-law and loving companion, Marie F. Moore of Unadilla; two grandchildren, 1st Lt. Christine Vosburgh of Tacoma, Wash. and Matthew Vosburgh of Syracuse; also nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Edward, Arthur and Lloyd.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist in Unadilla, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home this evening from 7 to 9, when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Geraldine Sullivan
THOUSAND OAKS,  Calif. — Mrs. Geraldine S. Sullivan, 71, of Thousand Oaks,  Calif., and formerly of Oneonta, died Dec. 5, 1998, in Thousand Oaks,  Calif.

She was born Feb. 6, 1927, in Oneonta, the daughter of Ellsworth and Florence (Lester) Sperbeck.

She attended Oneonta and Cobleskill schools, graduating from Cobleskill Central School in 1944.

She moved to Oneonta in 1956.

She was married to Earl Evans "Pat" Sullivan in Oneonta on Sept. 20, 1958.

She was employed as a legal secretary by John L. VanWoert (various partnerships) from Dec. 5, 1960, to Feb. 28, 1989. She was semi-retired and worked part time for attorneys Richard McVinney and Kurt Schulte until November 1992.

She was a member of the Rolling Antiquers Old Car Club of Norwich for many years.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Teri Sullivan of Thousand Oaks,  Calif., and Tom and Kathy Sullivan of Hawthorne; one daughter, Lynda Sullivan-Galbreath of Oneonta; eight grandchildren, Jarrod Sullivan of Minneapolis, Minn., Mikael Sullivan of Middlebury, Vt., Pfc. Thomas Sullivan, U.S. Army, of Germany, Betsy, Sarah and Geoffrey Sullivan and Natosha and Joshua Long, all of Oneonta; and one great-granddaughter, Skyler Sullivan of Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pat, in November 1992, and her sister, Dorothy Sperbeck Smallin.

Friends may call Friday, Dec. 11, from 7-9 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith Thistle officiating.

Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the American Lung Association would be appreciated.

LeRoy Allen Wilson
DAVENPORT — LeRoy Allen Wilson, 58, of Davenport, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at his residence after a lengthy illness.

He was born on March 15, 1940, in Oneonta, the son of Charles and Beatrice Wilson.

Mr. Wilson was a longtime resident of Oneonta and a former employee of the city of Oneonta before moving to Binghamton in 1978.

He recently moved back to the Oneonta area due to illness. Since returning, he has resided with his daughter and son-in-law, Timothy and Pamela VanBuren of Davenport.

He is survived by his daughters, Mrs. Timothy (Pamela) VanBuren of Davenport, Amy Hamm of Greenwood Lake, N.J., and Bernadette Hamm of Newark, N.J.; a son, Roger Hamm of Binghamton; a sister, Mrs. Juanita George Norton; and brothers, Ronald Wilson and Charles Wilson Jr.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Wayne Wilson.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Andrea  White, Catskill Area Hospice chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in the Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

The family will be receiving friends two hours prior to service time at the funeral home.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Ethel I. French
UNADILLA — Ethel I. French, 78, of Adams Street, Unadilla, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, in the Nursing Care Facility of The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born Aug. 20, 1920, in San Diego,  Calif., the daughter of Alvin and Florence (Taber) Powers.

She was married to Carl G. French Sr. on Sept. 3, 1939, in Sidney. Mr. French died July 30, 1973.

She has been a resident of Unadilla since 1932 and was a former part-time employee of the Great American Food Store in Unadilla, a former private-duty health-care aide, a former Avon representative and a retired nurse's aide of The Hospital, Sidney.

Mrs. French is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Hilda and Joseph Dolgos of Mount Upton and Linda and Mark Sutton of Sherburne; three sons and daughters-in-law, Carl Jr. and Joan French of Unadilla, Robert and Mary French of Wynantskill and Gerald E. French of Maryland; a special grandson, Kyle French of Maryland; and 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Charles Powers, and her sisters, Alice Lindsley, Jennie Harrington and Margaret Babbit.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with burial in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Alment Roe
HARPERSFIELD — Alment Roe, 79, of Harpersfield, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at the Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

He was born March 31, 1919, in Worcester, the son of Charles and Avis Morell Roe.

He married the late Marjorie DuBois in 1940, in Hobart.

He was a veteran of the United States Army.

He was a supervisor at Catskill Craftsman in Stamford for 23 years. He was a lifelong area resident.

He was a member of the V.F.W. Post, Stamford, Col. Harper Grange, Harpersfield.

He is survived by a son, Gorden Roe of Stamford; a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Janet Roe of Poughkeepsie; a daughter and son-in-law, Fay and Alfred Rogers of Harpersfield; six granddaughters; four great-granddaugters; two great-grandsons; and a sister, Geneveieve Collins of Hobart.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Stephen Herring of the Stamford Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Calling hours are on Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Stamford Rescue Squad or the Davenport First Responders.

Arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Beverly Frye
ONEONTA — Beverly Milloy Frye of Oneonta died Sunday evening, Dec. 6, 1998, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born March 27, 1928, in Niagara Falls, the daughter of Duncan D. and Mary (Morwood) Milloy. She married Richard H. Frye on Aug. 30, 1952, at St. Peter's Church, Niagara Falls.

Beverly received her bachelor's degree from William Smith College, Geneva, and her master's from the State University College at Oneonta. Her interests centered around her family and participation in the activities of the Episcopal Church.

Beverly is survived by her husband, the Rev. Richard H. Frye; her son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Mary Loson Frye of Marietta, Ga.; her daughters, Ann of Englewood, Fla., and Charlotte of Chico,  Calif. She is also survived by two grandsons, Michael and Ian of Marietta, Ga., and a brother, Donald of Sun Lakes, Ariz.

A Memorial Eucharist will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at Christ Episcopal Church, Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Altar Guild of Christ Church, the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Treatment Center or the Milford Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

Erma C. Sowles
UNADILLA — Erma C. Sowles, 92, of Sand Hill Road, Unadilla, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, at Valley View Manor Nursing Home, Norwich.

She was born Sept. 5, 1906, in the town of Unadilla, the daughter of Edwin and Ada (Sisson) Cuyle.

She was the widow of Horace Sowles, who died in 1980.

She has been a lifelong Unadilla resident, and a retired employee of Amphenol Corp. of Sidney. She also at one time was employed at the former Oneonta Dress Factory.

She was a member of the Sand Hill United Methodist Church and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local No. 1529 in Sidney.

Mrs. Sowles is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and George Smith of New Berlin and Elaine and John Short of Bainbridge; a son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Barbara Sowles of Bainbridge; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Owen Cuyle and a sister, Josephine Sisson.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla with the Rev. Norman R. Tiffany, pastor of the Sand Hill United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sand Hill United Methodist Church or the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.
