Ivan W. Beams
HOBART — Ivan W. Beams, 73, of Hobart, died at his home on Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998.

He was born May 27, 1925, in Middletown, the son of Charles H. and Minnie A. (Davenport) Beams. He married Eleanor L. McDowell on Jan. 20, 1946, in Middletown.

Mr. Beams served with the 84th Infantry Division in the European Theater and fought through the Battle of the Bulge. He was the recipient of many medals and honors, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and the Bronze Star Cluster.

He graduated Magna Cum Laud from Oswego in 1950, received his master's degree from Oswego and did most of his doctoral degree at the University of Rochester. He was an industrial arts teacher at West Irondiquoit High School from 1950-64; was high school principal at Westhill High School in Syracuse, from 1964-67; superintendent at Brewster Central schools from 1967-70, and superintendent at South Kortright Central School from 1970, until his retirement in 1983. Mr. Beams was the Founder of R.E.A.C.H. (Hobart Activity Center) in 1984, retiring in 1997.

His community memberships included active membership on the Hobart Village Board; Hobart Emergency Squad; Hobart Rotary Club; Hobart United Methodist Church; member of Epsilon Phi Tau for many years and many other organizations. As a member of the 84th Infantry Society and a director, he planned their 53rd reunion for Albany, in 1998, and was the Northen Chapter president for eight years. He was a member of the American Legion, Stamford, and the VFW Post 6292, Stamford.

He leaves his wife of 52 years; a son, Charles H. Beams and his wife, Dolores, of Pennellville; and one granddaughter, Amy Eleanor Beams of Jamesville.

He was predeceased by a brother and sister, both as infants.

His funeral will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at the Hobart United Methodist Church, with Pastor Richard Elder officiating. Calling hours with the family in attendance will take place on Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will take place in the spring at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Donations in his memory may be made to either R.E.A.C.H., Box N, Hobart, N.Y. 13788 or Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Barbara J. Lobdell
OTEGO — Mrs. Barbara J. Lobdell, 68, of Otego, died Thursday morning, Dec. 10, 1998, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

She was born March 31, 1930, in Downsville, the daughter of Lloyd and Margaret (Shaver) Hathaway.

Barbara married Stuart Lobdell, April 29, 1973, at the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, who survives her.

Barbara had worked as a housekeeper for Dr. Gier of Oneonta at onetime as well as having been a clerk at Center Street Food Store and Bresee's Oneonta Department Store.

She was a member of the River Street Baptist Church, the Ladies Missionary Society of the church, a choir member and had served as a deaconess for the church.

She is survived by her husband, Stuart Lobdell of Otego; three daughters and sons-in-law, Betsy and Joe Mallory of Bushnell, Fla., Brenda Goetschius and Ray Torres of Panama City, Fla., and Doris Goetschius of Oneonta; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Bob Nichols of Elmira and Cheryl and Steve Bridger of Otego; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Betty Hathaway of Wallkill; sister-in-law, Florence Hathaway of Downsville; nine grandchildren, Joey, Lisa, Tanya, Ashley, Katlin, Michael, Alana, Alisha, Elijah; six great-grandchildren, Shawn, Andre, Estaban, Desderay, Caleb, Kaile; special friends, Charlotte and Ralph Melius of Morris; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Hathaway, in 1990, and a brother, Carl Hathaway, in 1993.

Funeral and committal services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Melvin Farmer, pastor of River Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating. Burial will be in the Sand Hill Cemetery, Wells Bridge.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta on Sunday evening, Dec. 13, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the River Street Baptist Church, River Street, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Barbara J. Lobdell.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

George W. Stevens
HOBART — George W. Stevens, 89, of Hobart, passed away Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Jan. 10, 1909, in Deerfield, the son of Elmer and Ida (Davis) Stevens.

He was married to the late Janette Peters in Hobart on June 19, 1941. She died April 12, 1995.

Mr. Stevens was inducted into the United States Army, April 6, 1943, and was honorably discharged from Ft. Dix, N.J. on Nov. 6, 1945, having served in the China-Burma-India Theater. He received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He worked as a manager for the Victory Chain Store from 1929 to March 1943. He retired from the United States Postal Service in Hobart after a total of 35 years — 17 of those years as the post master.

He was a graduate of Stamford High School in 1928, and in 1930, from Spencer's Business School. He was a member of the Hobart United Methodist Church; Hobart Fire Department for more than 50 years, serving as their treasurer for 35 years; and a member for more than 50 years and past commander of VFW Post 6292, Stamford.

Mr. Stevens is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Victor and Nancy Stevens of Margaretville; a daughter-in-law, Marion (Candy) Stevens of Oneonta; his grandchildren, Michael Stevens, Jennifer Stevens, Maria Stevens, Jennifer Betz and Lucas Stevens; and a brother, Harold (Rink) Stevens of Hobart.

He was predeceased by a son, John Stevens, who died May 21, 1980, and two brothers, Emerson and Lyle Stevens.

His funeral will take place on Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Hobart United Methodist Church, with the Pastor Richard Elder officiating. Calling hours will be Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will take place in the spring at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Hobart Fire Department.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Ethel E. Degner
ONEONTA — Mrs. Ethel E. De"gner, 80, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at the Albany Medical Center, Albany.

She was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Cooperstown, the daughter of LeRoy and Ethel (Virtell) Krofft.

Ethel was first married to Glenn B. Bliss in the fall of 1941. Mr. Bliss died in 1953. Her second marriage was to Frank W. Degner on Feb. 25, 1962, who survives her.

Ethel was raised in Toddsville and moved to Oneonta in 1941. She was a homemaker until 1953, when her first husband, Glenn Bliss, passed away suddenly. Ethel started working at the Otesaga Hotel, Cooperstown, as a pastry chef and later worked at the former Homer Folks Hospital, Oneonta. After retiring she worked as a cook at the former Rizzo's Restaurant in Oneonta for about five years.

She is survived by her husband, Frank W. Degner of Oneonta; one son, Dean Bliss of Albany; one stepson, Richard Degner of Cooperstown; two stepdaughters, Debra Bowen of Cherry Valley and Bonnie Fitzgerald of Cherry Valley; a former daughter-in-law, Twyla Fitzgerald of Glens Falls; one brother, Clyde Krofft of East Greenbush; one sister, Laura Halpin of Bainbridge; a grandson, Glenn Bliss of Albany; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral and committal services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Mrs. Degner will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home Private Vault to await spring burial in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, Hartwick Seminary.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, from 3 to 5 p.m. when the family will be present.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Leukemia Society, Central New York Chapter, 401 N. Salina St., Syracuse, N.Y. 13203 in memory of Ethel E. Degner.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Maggie I. Hazelton
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Maggie I. Hazelton, 68, of 9 Linden Ave., died on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, in her home.

She was born on Dec. 25, 1929, in Alabama City, Ala., a daughter of the late Burley and Osie M. (Walker) Gentry.

She was raised and educated in Gaston, Ala., she graduated from Emma Samson High School, Gaston, Ala.

A United States Air Force veteran, she was honorably discharged on Oct. 9, 1951.

On June 1, 1951, she married Howard E. Hazelton on the Hamilton Air Force Base in California.

Maggie's life was devoted to her home and family. She was a member of the Richfield Springs American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 616, where she had served as past president and past chaplain, as well as holding various offices on a county level of the auxiliary.

Surviving besides her husband of 47 years, Howard, are four sons, Howard Hazelton II and his wife, Lois, of East Sand Lake, David Hazelton and his wife, Karen, of Windfall, Ind., William Hazelton and his wife, Deborah, of Richfield Springs and Allen Hazelton of Laurel, Md.; three daughters, Mary Kenney and her husband, Kevin, of Fly Creek, Beth Newman of Peyton,  Colo., Denise Lohnas of Frankfort; 13 grandchildren; one brother; four sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at 11 a.m. in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Andrea C.  White, spiritual care coordinator of the Catskill Area Hospice, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Warner H. Payne
BAINBRIDGE — Warner "Wayne" H. Payne, 70, of Bainbridge, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

He was born Feb. 15, 1928, to the late Howard and Ida Foote Payne, in Bainbridge.

Wayne married Joan Morrison in St. Charles, Miss., on May 16, 1964.

He served his country in the United States Army from 1946 to 1949.

He was employed by McDonnell Aircraft from 1955 to 1966, then moved to Rochester and worked for RF Communications from 1966 to 1983. Wayne retired to his hometown of Bainbridge, where he was employed by the Binghamton Press as a motor route carrier until his death.

Wayne was a mason in St. Louis, Miss. He was also a member of MENSA in LeRoy, where he was also involved as a cub master and scout leader in the Boy Scouts, and a 4-H Leader.

"He was known for his love of plants and animals, great and small."

Wayne is survived by his wife, Joan Payne of Bainbridge; two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Yvette Payne of Norwich and Scott and Barbara Payne of Deposit; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and John Claes of Fort Plain; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jared Meyers, Victoria Claes, Bradley and Karissa Payne, David and Cody Payne; one brother, Neil Payne of Vestal; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Beverly Griffith and Gloria Gillett.

Funeral services are private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Guilford Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Joyce Peplinski
DELTONA, Fla. — Joyce Marie Peplinski, 54, of Whitewood Drive, Deltona, Fla., died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at a relative's home in De Bary, Fla.

She was born in Cooperstown. She moved to Deltona, Fla., from Richfield Springs in 1997.

She was a former employee of New York Central Mutual Insurance, Edmeston, and John Knox Retirement Village, Orange City, Fla.

She was an avid bowler and enjoyed crocheting and traveling.

She is survived by her husband, Carl, of 29 years, of Deltona, Fla.; daughters, Jennifer Simonds of Richfield Springs, Debra Miller of Richfield Springs, Dianne Stringer of Virginia Beach, Va., and Tara Clark of Virginia Beach, Va.; sons, David Madison of Richfield Springs, Robert Madison of Chesapeake, Va., Jeffery Madison of Hartwick and Laine Madison of Oneonta; her mother, Irene Patrick of Richfield Springs; her sisters, Joanne Ward of Richfield Springs and Janice Mulkin of Oneonta; her bothers, Raymond Patrick of Richfield Springs, James Patrick of Richfield Springs and Richard Patrick of West Winfield; 14 grandchildren; and also a loving father-in-law, Carl Peplinski Sr. of De Bary, Fla.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 218-A E. New York Ave., De Land, Fla., 32724.

Funeral arrangements are by Altman-Long Funeral Home, De Bary, Fla.

Shirley Rosen
ONEONTA — Shirley Daniels Rosen, 74, of Oneonta, and formerly of Utica, passed away Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born March 26, 1924, the daughter of Marvin and Charlotte Pincus of Buffalo.

On Sept. 10, 1949, she married Jules Daniels of Utica. Mr. Daniels passed away in January 1984. In 1989, she married Sam T. Rosen and moved to Oneonta.

Shirley managed The Daniels Jewelers firm, of 54 years, with her daughter, Wendy Jeffrey H. Franz of Frankfort, and Emma Kotch of Utica.

While living in Utica she was a member of Temple Emanuel and its sisterhood.

She is survived by her husband, Sam T. Rosen of Oneonta; a daughter, Wendy Daniels-Rock, and son-in-law, Carl A. Rock of Marcy; her brother, James N. Pincus of Sarasota, Fla.; grandchildren, Wayne and Glenn Daniels of Utica; stepchildren, Susan Rosen of Albany and Barry Rosen of San Francisco,  Calif.

She leaves many supportive relatives and close friends in Buffalo, Oneonta and Utica.

She was predeceased by a stepson, Peter A. Daniels of Utica.

The funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rabbi Donald Roberts, of Oneonta, officiating. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. at the Temple Emanuel Cemetery, Roberts Road, Sauquoit.

There will be no calling hours.

The family requests in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to the charity of their choice.
