George L. Jones
HARPERSFIELD — George L. Jones, 76, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at his home.

He was born June 22, 1922, in Grand Gorge, the son of William and Grace Newcomb Jones.

He married Rina Faoro on Oct. 13, 1951, in Stamford.

He was in the United States Army serving in the South Pacific, 1944-46.

He was a journeyman lineman in electrical construction for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1249 in Syracuse.

He was a member of the IBEW Local 1249 from January 1951 until his retirement in July 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Rina at home; two daughters, Mrs. Terry (Marion) Daniels of Plattsburg and Betty  Jones and Ed Hunter of Stamford; a son, Mr. George W. (Mozhgan)  Jones of Gloversville; four grandchildren, Jesse and Jan Daniels, Nema and Mona Zohrehvand; one sister, Mrs. Marion Govern of Stamford and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two half sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Bassani of East Meredith and Mrs. Alice Titus of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Harold (Pete) Jones, and two half brothers, Edward  Jones and David Jones.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with the Rev. Father Joseph Cebula officiating. Burial will be at the Fair View Cemetery, Grand Gorge. Calling hours are Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Stamford Rescue Squad.

Arrangements are by MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Katherine M. Bibeau
NEW BERLIN — Miss Katherine M. "Katie" Bibeau, 86, died Monday afternoon, Dec. 14, 1998, at the Chase Nursing Home, New Berlin.

Katherine was born Sept. 25, 1912, in Oneonta, the daughter of Victor and Ida (Aubrey) Bibeau.

She was employed by Harris Dry Cleaners for more than 30 years and never missed a day of work.

Katherine was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Lise Bibeau of New Berlin; six nieces, Mary Ann Gauthier of North Carolina, Carol Bibeau of Watertown, Janet Woodrow of Maryland, Loretta Stolpinski of Norwich, Paulette Gural of Guilford and Joan Corbett of Syracuse; two nephews, Daniel Bibeau of Rotterdam and Tom Clark of  Oklahoma; and two dear friends, Lena Cobb and Al Harris.

Katherine was predeceased by a brother, Daniel Bibeau, and her sister, Iva Clark.

Funeral prayers will be said 9:15 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., followed by a Funeral Mass 10 a.m., Thursday at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Katherine's memory to the building fund for St. Mary's School.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Steven R. Sines Sr.
SAN BERNARDINO,  Calif. — Steven R. Sines Sr. of San Bernardino,  Calif., and formerly of Oneonta, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998.

He is survived by two sons, Steven Jr. and Bruce of Margaretville; his parents, Lloyd and Barbara Sines of Oneonta; five brothers, Mark and Timothy of Sacramento,  Calif., Wyatt of Delhi, Lloyd Jr. of Plattsburg and Carl of Oneonta; three sisters, Sandra of Halcott Center, Lucinda of Otego and Carla of Ft. Stewart, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

There will be no calling hours. A private memorial will be held by the family. The interment will be in San Bernardino,  Calif.

Contributions in Steven's name may be made to the American Red Cross of Oneonta.

C. Lavern Kelley
ONEONTA — Mr. C. Lavern Kelley, 70, of Oneonta, died Friday afternoon, Dec. 11, 1998, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born April 27, 1928, in Oneonta, the son of Claude and Grace (Schermerhorn) Kelley.

Lavern, a lifelong area resident, owned and operated the family farm in the town of Oneonta along with his brother, Roger Kelley, since 1946.

As a pastime Lavern enjoyed carving wood with a pen knife that he had received as a young boy and continued this throughout his adult life. He was a highly regarded folk artist and wood carver throughout the country. Since 1935, he has carved over 460 models of vehicles and farm equipment. In 1985, he participated in his first art exhibition at Galley 53 in Cooperstown and received national press coverage in Art and Auction Magazine. His wood carvings are found in many private and public collections including the Smithsonian Institution in  Washington D.C., Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, N.M., and the Farmers' Museum, Cooperstown.

He is survived by his brother, Roger Kelley of Oneonta; one aunt, Esther Rohland of Schenectady; and cousins, Robert and Jean Schermerhorn of Cherry Valley and Harold and Harriet Schermerhorn of Floral City, Fla.

Funeral and committal services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Keith Van Dewerker, pastor of the West End Community Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present.

Mr. Kelley will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home Private Vault to await spring burial in Milford Center Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Josephine Bagnardi
ONEONTA — Josephine A. Bagnardi, of Oneonta, died on Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born in East Meredith, the daughter of Pasquale and Angelina (Longo) DeFiore. She married John J. Bagnardi on Jan. 16, 1926. After their marriage, they lived briefly in Brooklyn, and then returned to Oneonta. Her husband predeceased her on May 4, 1985.

A lifelong area resident, she was a member of St. Mary's Church and its Rosary Society, the Oneonta Business Women's Club, the Italian American Club, and the Gray Ladies of the Fox Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid bowler, and served for many years as treasurer of the Strike and Spare Bowling League.

Josie was a devoted wife and mother, and will be remembered fondly as "Nana" by numerous children of family, friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her children, Angie Lombardo of Albany, Albert Bagnardi and his wife, Carol, of Oneonta, and Johanna Welge and her husband, Richard, of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Cynthia and Albert Bagnardi, Sean and Jennifer Welge, Patricia Burnham, Johanna Lombardo, Charles Lombardo, Donna Hebert, Natalie Monescalchi, and Diane Gabriels; her great-grandchildren, Deah, Brittany and Todd Burnham, Donna Lechleiter, John Ehmann, Michael and Anthony Monescalchi, Justin and Ryan Lombardo, Christian and Charles Gabriels, Michael Hebert, Amanda and Travis Bagnardi; two sisters, Minnie Bagnardi and Marge Mathews of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a sister, Antoinette Angellotti.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, after 3 p.m. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the St. Mary's School Building Fund.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Nellie Y. Trainor
FLY CREEK — Mrs. Nellie Y. Trainor, 74, of Fly Creek, died early Tuesday morning, Dec. 15, 1998, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born on Aug. 19, 1924, in Fly Creek, a daughter of Orra C. and Nellie Mariah (Adsit) Goodspeed. She married Douglas V. Trainor on Oct. 12, 1943, in Cooperstown. Mr. Trainor died on May 28, 1968.

A lifelong resident of Fly Creek Valley, Nellie attended Cooperstown High School. She spent her life as a homemaker and enjoyed a simple country lifestyle. For the past 17 years she had resided at The Meadows.

Nellie was a member of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, the Home Bureau of Fly Creek Valley, and for more than 50 years was a member of the Fly Creek Valley Grange No. 790. She had enjoyed her craft work, most especially painting and needlepoint.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Louise Eravi of Oneonta; four grandsons, Shannon Trainor, Daniel Trainor, Eric Trainor and Steven Eravi; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Mrs. Vera R. Ainslie of Fly Creek and Norma and Hugh Van Benschoten of East Springfield; two uncles and one aunt, Dick Clayton and Bill and Josephine Adsit, all of Cooperstown; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas Burleigh, chaplain of Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7 p.m. until service time when Nellie's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Activities Fund, care of The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33 W, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or the Fly Creek United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 128, Fly Creek, N.Y. 13337-0128.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Doris B. Bouboulis
GOODYEAR LAKE — Mrs. Doris B. Bouboulis, 71, of Goodyear Lake, town of Maryland, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Feb. 16, 1927, in Hartwick, the daughter of Jacob E. and Ella June (Mead) Bush.

Doris married Stephen Bouboulis on Nov. 16, 1947, in East Worcester. He died Aug. 10, 1986.

A lifelong area resident, Doris was a telephone operator for New York Telephone more than 30 years, retiring in 1979.

She grew up in Hartwick, where she attended school and was a 1945 graduate of Hartwick High School. Following graduation she moved to Oneonta. Doris was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, and the Telephone Pioneers of America.

She enjoyed walking, swimming and boating as well as traveling with her companion, Tony Chicorelli of Oneonta.

Doris is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and James Ballantine of Oneonta; one sister, Ruth Trowbridge of Milford; her companion, Anthony Chicorelli of Oneonta; two grandchildren, Erin and Kathryn Ballantine of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Darlene Bouboulis in August 1970, and two brothers, Harold and Donald Bush.

Funeral and committal services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta on Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bouboulis will be cremated and her cremains intered in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta in the spring of 1999.

It is requested, expressions of sympathy be made to the Darlene Bouboulis Scholarship Fund care of Oneonta High School, East Street, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, in memory of Doris Bouboulis.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Persis Van Cleef
HARTWICK — Persis Hathaway Van Cleef, 87, of Hartwick, formerly of Westford and Cooperstown, died at home on Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, following an extended illness.

She was born Dec. 4, 1911, she was predeceased by her husband, John H. Van Cleef, who died in 1971.

The Van Cleefs owned and operated a Jersey dairy farm in Westford from 1943 to 1967, moving then to the village of Cooperstown.

Persis attended Wellesley Jr. College as a young woman. In later life she became an accomplished artist and harpist. She was a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church and the choir. She worked as a part-time psychiatric secretary at M.I. Bassett Hospital for 15 years.

She is survived by her two sisters, Anne Klucken and Jane Beckwith of Massachusetts, and their families; and her brother, Alton Hathaway of Florida. Also surviving are her five sons and families: Dierk and Phyllis Van Cleef of Lodi, Wis., and his children, Jordan and Sarah; Alton H. and Linda Van Cleef of Hartwick, and their children, Bradley and Heather; John H. Van Cleef of Frederick, Md.; Timothy and Karen Van Cleef of Amherst, Mass., and their children, Bryce and Aiden; and Jabez and Anne Van Cleef of Madison, N.J., and children, Jane, Lucy and Grace.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service with Holy Eucharist will be held on Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at 10 a.m. in Christ Episcopal Church, Cooperstown, with the Very Rev. Douglas C. Smith officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Building Fund of Christ Episcopal Church, 69 Fair St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

We, the family, wish to express our deep gratitude to all who helped us care for Persis over the last 21 years, making her life and ours more pleasant. We also want to thank the Catskill Area Hospice Group for all of the comfort, guidance and support they all gave us over the last two weeks. May God bless you all abundantly.

Marjorie F. Mallory
COOPERSTOWN — Marjorie F. Mallory, 99, of Cooperstown, passed away Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

Mrs. Mallory was born in Middlefield on Nov. 28, 1899, a daughter of Charles B. and Cora B. (Davis) Fitch.

Marjorie attended schools in Cooperstown and graduated from Cooperstown High School in the Class of 1918. After high school she went to the Albany Business College. Immediately following graduation, Marjorie went to work as a bookkeeper for the Leatherstocking Corp., where she worked for 60 years.

She married Harold R. Mallory on June 24, 1937, who predeceased her on Jan. 26, 1938.

Marjorie was a native daughter of Cooperstown, a lifetime member of the Criterion Club, and a member of the United Methodist Women.

Mrs. Mallory is survived by a nephew and his wife, Robert and Eleanor Pearse of Cortland; a great-niece, Nancy Lepore of Stamfordville; a great-nephew, Michael Pearse of Arlington, Va.; and two great-great-nieces.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Jeffrey Hale, pastor of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, officiating. Calling hours will be on Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

Mrs. Mallory will be placed in the receiving vault in the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown. Burial will be in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, for those who wish may make contributions in her name to the Cooperstown United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or to a charity of their choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
