Frances Harrington
EDMESTON — Frances Harrington, 61, formerly of Edmeston died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

She was born June 18, 1937, in Franklin, the daughter of William and Flora (Davis) Lake. On Sept. 24, 1955, in Edmeston she married Fred Harrington. He predeceased her on June 27, 1986.

Frances was a kind and caring mother and grandmother and will be remembered for her love of farming. She had been employed as a nurse's aide at Chase Memorial Nursing Home and was a member of the Pittsfield Fire Department Auxiliary and the Veteran's Administration Auxiliary.

She is survived by her children, David and Brenda Harrington of Columbus, Brian and Jenny Harrington of New Berlin, Kenneth and Sherry Harrington of Pittsfield, Susan Eckert and Phillip Wright of Franklin and Cindy and Michael Vibbard of Sherburne; her brothers and sisters, Marian Mumbulo, Glenda Nestved, Seymour Bourne, Brownell Lake and Viola Clarke; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, Bob and Charles and sisters, Ernie and Ruth.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at 11 a.m., at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Jeff McLallen of the South Edmeston Community Church officiating. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the family would be appreciated. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Helen R. Head
WORCESTER — Mrs. Helen Rose Head, 80, passed away Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born Aug. 11, 1918, in Edina, Mo., the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Miller) Schwab. In September 1939, she married Charles A. Head in Worcester. He predeceased her in February 1984.

Mrs. Head was a 1937 graduate of East Worcester High School and became a business partner with her husband in Charles A. Head Inc., Worcester. From 1965-1993, she resided in Stone Mt., Ga. From 1993-1996, Helen resided in Oneonta at the Hampshire House, and from 1996 until her passing she resided at The Meadows.

Mrs. Head is survived by two sons, Ronald T. Head of Oneonta and John C. Head of Stone Mt., Ga; a sister, Letha LaPointe of Schenectady; six grandchildren; and seveal nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Henry Schwab, three sisters, Gertrude Ridge, Laura Schwab and Margaret Lane.

Cremation will take place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley and a private memorial service will be held at the family's convenience.

Contributions in Mrs. Head's memory may be made to Alzheimer's Association or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Cynthia Rivenburg
SIDNEY CENTER — Cynthia Rivenburg, 68, of Sidney Center passed away Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at her home.

She was born to Malcolm and Lucy Ward Kinne in Meridale, on Feb. 21, 1930.

Cynthia married Morris Rivenburg on Jan. 19, 1949, in Meridale.

She was a supervisor in the Binder Division at Keith Clark, Sidney.

Cynthia was also a member of the Topographical Union at Keith Clark and a member of the Circle Drive Christian Alliance Church, Sidney.

She is survived by her husband, Morris Rivenburg of Sidney Center; two sons and daughters-in-law, Clifford Rivenburg of Jacksonville, Fla., and Donald and Nancy Rivenburg of Masonville; four daughters and sons-in-law, Carlotta and Donald Holden of Binghamton, Darla Crandall of Sidney, Sharon and Lynn Roof of Sidney Center and Laurna and Paul Hotaling of Jacksonville, Fla.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Myrtle Kinne of Sidney Center, Nathan and Dorothy Kinne of Greene, William and Thelma Kinne of Greene and Eber and Carol Kinne of Panama; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Thelma Mannwarren of Coventry, Winona and John Wilber of Tucson, Ariz., and Carol and David Rutenber of Sidney; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, from the funeral home at 2 p.m. The Rev. Thomas Flanders of the Circle Drive Christian Alliance Church in Sidney will officiate. Burial will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc. 21 Main St., Sidney.

Dorothy Breen
STAMFORD — Dorothy Adrian Breen, 95, of 137 W. Main St., died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, peacefully at her residence.

She was born June 25, 1903, in New York City, the daughter of George M. and Kate G. (Masterson) Adrian. She married John  Taylor Breen, who died on March 18, 1967.

Dorothy had been a resident of Stamford for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church and the Rosary Society of the church. For many years she was a member of the Carmelite Order.

She is survived by three sons and two daughters and their spouses, John T. Breen of Stamford, George A. and Gertrude Breen of Lancaster,  Calif., Adrian O. and Janice Breen of Cincinnati, Ohio, Barbara E. and Carl Zirinsky of New Port Beach,  Calif., and Dorothy B. and Thomas Donnelly of Binghamton; a sister, Therese A. Albert of New York City; a sister-in-law, Ruth Adrian of Scarsdale; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford, with the Rev. Joseph Cebula, presiding. Burial will be held in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.

Friends may call at the Breen residence at 137 W. Main St., Stamford, between 4 and 8 p.m. Tuesday, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

George W. Kershko
NEW LISBON — George W. Kershko, 83, of New Lisbon, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at the Oneonta Nursing Home in Oneonta.

He was born in Manhattan, Dec. 28, 1914, the son of John and Anna (Urusky) Kershko.

George was most recently married to Adela Ponikowska. They were married on July 23, 1992, in Cooperstown.

He served his country during World War II in the United States Army in the European theater of operations. He was a member of the American Legion post of Morris.

He is survived by his wife, Adela of New Lisbon and Oneonta; and his brother, Fred of Clifton Park.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with Frank Merrifield officiating. Committal services and burial will follow in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home, 23 South Broad St., Morris.

Helen O. Sperduto
CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Helen O. Sperduto, 86, passed away Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

She was born Nov. 13, 1912, in Amsterdam, the daughter of John and Sarah (Griffin) Otis.

Mrs. Sperduto moved to Cherry Valley in 1962, and was a bank teller for the Otsego National Bank (currently the Central National Bank), Cherry Valley, from 1963 until her retirement.

She was married to Domenick Sperduto, who survives.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at 11 a.m. in St. Thomas Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Santino Titta officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ft. Johnson.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

John A. Havrish
NAPANOCH — John A. Havrish, 62, of Napanoch, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at Ellenville Hospital, Ellenville.

He was born Oct. 18, 1936, in  Jefferson, the son of Andrew and Mary (Timan) Havrish. He married Beverly Scutt on April 1, 1961, in Stamford.

John graduated from  Jefferson Central School in 1956. He lived in Napanoch for 32 years. He was employed by Channelmaster in Ellenville for more than 20 years. He was also a school bus driver for Rolling V. Bus Lines in South Fallsburg. He also worked for Jamesway in Napanoch, Ellenville Hospital, and Rainbow Diner in Kerhonkson.

John was a member and trustee of the St. Marks United Methodist Church in Napanoch. John enjoyed playing softball, camping and water skiing.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Havrish of Napanoch; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jim Reed of Clifton Park; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Paul and Mildred Havrish of Phoenix, Ariz., Robert Havrish of Phoenix, Ariz., and Allen Havrish of Clifton Park; six grandchildren, Justin, Sara, Brandon, Robert, Nicholas, and Jessica; a sister, Helen Havrish of  Jefferson; three brothers, Robert Havrish of West Haverstraw, and Andrew and William Havrish of  Jefferson; a good friend, Harold Kovsca of  Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Marguerite Havrish; a brother, Frank Havrish; and a niece, Kim Havrish.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Richard Elder, pastor of the Hobart United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will take place in the spring in the Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday afternoon and evening at their convenience. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Dorothy Breen
STAMFORD — Dorothy Adrian Breen, 95, of 137 W. Main St., died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, peacefully at her residence.

Friends called at the Breen residence at 137 W. Main St., Stamford, between 4 and 8 p.m. Tuesday, at which time the family was in attendance.

The family wishes to express deep appreciation to her caregivers, Geraldine and Mary Starkweather and Neicia Tompkins. Additionally, the family wishes to recognize Dr. Tina Gardner for the special care she provided our mother, enabling her to remain in her home.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Frances T. Murdock
KINGSTON — Frances T. Murdock, 90, of Kingston and formerly of Oneonta, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, in Golden Hills Health Center, Kingston.

She was born in Susquehanna, Pa., June 2, 1908, the daughter of Fredrick and Anna Townsend.

She was married to Lester Murdock, in June 25, 1933. He was an employee of The Daily Star for 40 years as a printer. He predeceased her in 1984.

She was employed at Bresee's Foundation Department for 30 years, and a member of the Oneonta Women's Club. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Oneonta. She enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by a son, Lester Murdock of Greenville, S.C.; one sister, Harriet Haffner of Kingston; sisters-in-law, Betty Townsend of Oneonta and Marion Schatsky of Florida; two grandchildren residing in Greenville, S.C.; and one nephew and a niece.

Her cremains will be interred next to her husband's grave in the Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, in the spring.

She will be greatly missed by her friends and family.

Ada Serrao Sullivan
BEAUFORT, S.C. — Ada Serrao Sullivan, 82, formerly of Franklin and Otego, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998, at the Bayview Adult Home in Beaufort, S.C.

She was born March 20, 1916, in Hempstead, Long Island, the daughter of George W. and Mary Ada (Griffith) Bray.

Ada was married to Manuel Serrao in 1935, and lived for a time in East Worcester and then Passaic, N.J. She returned to this area in 1951, living in Franklin until after her husband's death in 1969. She remarried in 1971, to Donnell Sullivan and moved to Otego where she spent many happy years. He predeceased her in 1991, after which whe moved to Bluffton, S.C.

Ada was a kind and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be remembered for her gentle and caring spirit.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Manuel and Lydia Serrao of Bluffton, S.C., James and Shirley Serrao of Treadwell, Donald and Kerri Serrao of Maryland; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Thomas Ryder of Otego; a stepdaughter and her husband, Linda and Gary Hunt; 18 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; a sister, Emma (Ross) Mead; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Pierre Hollenbeck.

A memorial service will be held in the spring.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bookhout Funeral Home of Otego.

Ruth D. Miller
ONEONTA — Mrs. Lewis (Ruth D.) Miller, 95, of Oneonta, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 23, 1998, at her residence.

Mrs. Miller was married to the late Lewis W. Miller, former owner of Lew Miller Office Equipment Co., Oneonta.

At Mrs. Miller's request there will be no viewing hours or funeral service.

Mrs. Miller will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home Private Vault to await spring interment in the Richmondville Cemetery, Richmondville.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Miriam Midkiff
ONEONTA — Miriam Mayne Griswold Midkiff, 97, of 652 East St. died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at home.

She was born April 4, 1901, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Dr. Earl and Maud (Rittenhouse) Mayne. On June 1, 1925, she married Clayton Tracy Griswold in Brooklyn. He predeceased her on June 10, 1971.

Miriam was a 1919 graduate of Manual Training High School in Brooklyn. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1923.

During her early career she was homemaker and moral support for her Presbyterian minister husband in Cortland, from 1927 to 1930; in Hobart from 1930 to 1934; and in Watkins Glen from 1934 to 1939. In mid-1939, when Clayton was appointed to the General Council of the Presbyterian Church (USA), Miriam helped move the family headquarters to Summit, N.J., where they lived for the next 20 years.

After 1976, Miriam divided her time between Brevard, N.C., and Lakeland, Fla. She married Harry Midkiff, a retired Presbyterian missionary, Dec. 15, 1979. Harry died in 1983. In 1989, she moved to Louisville, Ky., to live with her youngest daughter, Katherine. In 1994, she moved to Oneonta.

Miriam was the youngest of three daughters. Her father grew up as a farm boy, worked his way through college, then worked as a civil engineer until he could save enough money to put himself through medical school. Her mother was a published writer whose journals formed the basis for the best-selling book "Maud" (1939-40).

At 16, Miriam marched as a suffragette in New York City. At Wellesley College she was awarded a silver cup as best oarswoman. In Hobart she was leader of the Campfire Girls. In Watkins Glen she served as president of the Schuyler County Bird Club. She was the first woman elder to serve communion in The Central Presbyterian Church of Summit.

Miriam loved the lakes and forests of the Northeast. She especially loved the area around Davenport, and spent almost every summer there from the age of 12 on. She instilled that same love for the area in her children and grandchildren.

Miriam kept her positive outlook on life to the very end. She was a continual source of strength and inspiration to her family and friends. She will be greatly missed.

Miriam is survived by sons, David M. Griswold of Oneonta and Dr. Lincoln T. Griswold of Erdenheim, Pa.; and daughters, Maud Mary Bishop of Oneonta and Katharine Griswold of Louisville, Ky. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren (four of this city); and 18 great-grandchildren (one of this city).

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
