Millard F. VanAken
ROXBURY — Millard F. VanAken, 75, of MacMore Road, Roxbury, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at Kingston City Hospital in Kingston.

He was born March 9, 1923, at Roxbury, the son of Claude and Edna (Boehle) VanAken. He was married to Olive Cronk on Oct. 18, 1945, at Binghamton.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He served on the Cryptographic Team with the British Eighth Army in Africa and Italy.

Millard was employed by the New York Telephone Co. and the Bell System for 35 years, starting out as a lineman and retiring in August of 1981, as a technical writer. For two years he worked in Alaska for Western Electric on the Do Line.

At one time he lived in Sherrill and was a commissioner of the Stanwix Boy Scouts of America at Rome. He was also assistant Boy Scout master at Sherrill. He had at one time lived in Grand Gorge and was a member and past commander of the Earl B. Dudley American Legion Post. He was a member of the Grand Gorge Fire Department. He was also a member of the Lt. Harry Pruden Jr. VFW Post, Stamford, and a member and past president of the Telephone Pioneers of America the Norwich-Oneonta Chapter.

He is survived by his wife, Olive VanAken of Roxbury; three sons, Alan and his wife, Teriseta VanAken, of Piti, Guam, Kipp VanAken of Vista,  Calif., and John VanAken of New York City; grandchildren, Arron and Celeste VanAken and Kimberly and Jesse Sheppard, all of Kailua, Hawaii; great-grandchildren, Arron VanAken Jr. and Sampson and Jessica Sheppard; sisters, Doris Kelly of Halcottsville, and Eleanor Eigenbrude of Wexford, Pa.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ottis and Virginia VanAken of Redmond, Wash., Robert and Catherine VanAken of Fairfax, Va., and Albin VanAken of Roxbury; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, at their convenience, Monday afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Millard's memory to the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Main Street, Roxbury, N.Y. 12474.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford-Grand Gorge.

Pearl R. Enck
MIDDLEFIELD — Mrs. Pearl R. Enck, formerly of Otego, passed away Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, in M.I. Bassett Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born the daughter of Clayton and Anna (Darling) Ritton, April 9, 1913. She married Frederick F. Enck Sr. on April 8, 1944, in Maryland. Fred predeceased her on April 12, 1969.

Pearl worked many years at Scintilla-Bendix until her retirement. In her younger years she worked supplying homemade pies for the Rex Restaurant in Oneonta. This skill stayed with her all of her life and made every holiday with her a special treat. Pearl was known by all for her special sense of humor and feisty attitude that stayed with her even through her brief stay at The Meadows.

Pearl was especially proud of her four sons and is survived by Malcolm C. Ross from Big Pine Key, Fla., Frederick F. Enck Jr., and his wife, Barbara, from Otego, Gary C. Enck and his wife, Laurie, from Oneonta, and Mahlon H. Enck and his wife, Amalia, from Carrollton, Ga. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Bruce, Brian, Barry, Stephanie, Christopher, Jonathan and Jeni Enck; her great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

She was predeceased by a brother, Harold Ritton, and a sister, Ethel (Ritton) Shaul.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at 2 p.m., at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Alan C. Hatch of the Otego Baptist Church, officiating. Pearl will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home private vault to await burial in the spring in the Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

There will be no calling hours.

Jerome Meadow
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Jerome Meadow, DDS, 84, of Church Street in Richfield Springs, died Friday afternoon, Dec. 25, 1998 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1914 on the Lower East Side in New York City, a son of Nathan and Rose (Frank) Meadow.

Raised in New York City, Dr. Meadow was a graduate of City College and then received his DDS at Dal Housie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1974 he moved to Richfield Springs, where he maintained a private dental practice until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Winnie Renwick Meadow of Richfield Springs; his former wife, Diane Cohen Meadow of Arlington, Mass.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Felice Meadow and her husband, Dr. Michael Tyo of Harvard, Mass. and Linda and Michael Atlas of Arlington, Mass.; four grandchildren, Natalie Leah Tyo, Alexander Robert Tyo, Robert Phillip Atlas and Samuel Richard Atlas; one sister, Lillian Meadow of Far Rockaway and one brother, Irving Meadow of Florida.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, at the Congregation Tifereth Zvi Cemetery in Utica with the Rabbi Howard Matasar officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Dysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Thor Lien
BRIDGEWATER — Thor Lien, 70, died at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, on Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998.

He was born in Brooklyn, Sept. 14, 1928, to Olga (Eide) and Martin Lien.

Thor was confirmed in a Lutheran faith in Our Savior Lutheran Church, Brooklyn. He moved upstate in 1945, and graduated from the State University College of Technology at Delhi in 1948, after which he finished three years at the School of Agriculture at Cornell University, Ithaca

He married Anna (Jackson) Lien in 1957, at the Otego Baptist Church, Otego.

Thor was occupied with farming at Copes Corners, Mount Upton, and later owned a farm in Delhi, and one partnership with his brother in Richfield Springs. He retired from farming in 1974, and for health reasons he returned to college, obtaining a certificate in refrigeration, air conditioning and heating. He worked at this trade until 1995. He was employed by Great American Groceries and was later self-employed.

Thor is survived by his wife, Anna; three children: daugther, Janice Lien, and children, Summer and Kristoffer, of Michigan; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Peter Owens, and sons, Llewellyn and Nicholas, of Brookfield; and son, Eric Lien of Bridgewater. Also surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Jean Lien of Gresham, Ore.; niece, Elizabeth Lien of Omaha, Neb.; nephews, Robert Lien and wife, Cathy, and their sons, Erik and Daniel, of Tigard, Wash.; and Douglas and Dena Lien and sons, Christopher and Michael, of Everett, Wash.; niece and husband, Lisa and Michael DeVogel, their son, Nicholaas, of Issaquah, Wash.; niece and husband, Amy and Michael Stonehill of Sacramento,  Calif.; cousins, Roald Strand of Mount Vernon, Wash., Al and Margaret Harms of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Martin and Inger Marie Eide of Bodo, Norway; and Aunt Julia Hatlebrekke of Borsa, Norway; cousins, Mary Eide and Ester Heim of Oslo, Norway, Osta Eide of Fiskabyd, Norway, Olav and Angie Hamar of Bekkestua, Norway.

Thor was predeceased by his parents and sister, Ingrid Mattox.

The funeral will be Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home, Main Street, West Winfield, with Pastor Mark Thall officiating. Intermet will be in Sand Hill Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Emergency Squad of the Bridgewater Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Dorothy Rea
ONEONTA — Mrs. Dorothy Rea, 93, of Oneonta, died Saturday evening, Dec. 26, 1998, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 13, 1905, the daughter of Harry P. and Gertrude (Damaschke) Weidman.

Mrs. Rea was a homemaker and had worked in libraries in areas she had lived throughout her life. She at onetime served as a member of the board of trustees for the Sherburne and Oneonta libraries.

Mrs. Rea's first husband, Lawrence Conway MacNice, was a school principal in Huntington, Long Island, when he died, and she returned to this area where she grew up, and lived in Sherburne with her second husband, Norman Rea, before moving back to Oneonta.

Dorothy was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta. She had a love for flowers and gardening and enjoyed working in her yard. As a young girl she traveled throughout Europe with a family she was employed by as a nanny for their children.

She is survived by two nieces, Barbara Campbell of Milford and Dorothy Weigel of Cincinnati, Ohio; one aunt, Margaret Damaschke of Oneonta; three grandnephews, Michael and Jude Lynch of Anchor Point, Alaska, and Timothy Weigel of Cincinnati, Ohio; and two great-grandnephews, Bobby and David Weigel.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Wilfred Lyon, retired Methodist minister, officiating.

Mrs. Rea will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home Private Vault and buried in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, in the spring of 1999.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until service time.

It is requested expressions of sympathy be made to the Salvation Army, 25 River St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the SPCA, Route 28, Hyde Park, N.Y. 13326, in memory of Dorothy Rea.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Ruth M. Keating
PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Ruth M. Keating, 91, of Palm Harbor, Fla., died at her home on Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998.

She was born Oct. 24, 1907, in New York City, the daughter of William and Anna Leafman (Erikson). She was married to William Keating, who predeceased her in 1990.

Ruth lived in New Jersey until 1948. At that time she moved to the Fly Creek area. After retiring from the New York State Historical Association, she and her husband moved south and settled in the west coast of Florida.

Ruth was a member of the Alliance Church of Dunedin, Fla.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William and Evelyn Keating of Fly Creek; and a niece, Joyce Winder of Bar Harbor, Maine. Ruth is also survived by four grandchildren, Anne Richter of Palm Harbor, Fla., Martha Domermuth of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., William Keating of Battle Creek, Mich., and Elizabeth Schultz of Utica; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Fly Creek Methodist Church on Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Eileen Kellogg, pastor of the Fly Creek Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be in the Fly Creek Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial gifts can be made in her memory to Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Ernst Nerzak
DE LAND, Fla. — Ernst Albert Nerzak, 77, of South Brooks Avenue, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at Mariner Healthcare of De Land, Fla. He was retired self-employed tile contractor for Unadilla Tile Co., Unadilla.

Mr. Nerzak was born in Germany, and moved to this area in 1993, from Unadilla. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and horses.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Martha; two sons, Peter of Maryville, Tenn., and Harold of Otego; a daughter, Ute Hartshorn of De Land, Fla.; two brothers, Hans and Ulrich; and three sisters, Lene Petchold, Hilde Kortulla and Brigitte Nerzak, all of Germany; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Donald Simonds
BAINBRIDGE — Donald Simonds, 70, of Bainbridge, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born to Milton R. and Mabel H. Holman Simonds Sr., on June 3, 1928, in Bainbridge.

Donald served his country from 1951 to 1953 in the United States Army in Korea.

Donald married June Garrison on June 2, 1951, at the Methodist Church in Bainbridge.

He was employed by the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier until he retired in 1988.

Donald was a member of the Postal Union, St. Peters Episcopal Church, Bainbridge, and the Slater-Silvernail American Legion Post No. 806, Bainbridge.

He enjoyed camping and loved nature, especially Lake Ontario. He also loved gardening and carpentry by building family homes.

Donald is survived by his wife, June Simonds of Bainbridge; father and mother, Milton R. and Mabel Simonds Sr. of Bainbridge; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy Simonds and Michael Niggli of Bainbridge and Gale and Richard Hamstra of Norwich; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Milton and Dorothy Simonds Jr. of North Fenton, Norman and Joan Simonds of Mt. Holly, N.C., Benjamin and Peg Simonds of Bainbridge, and Richard Simonds of Bainbridge; three grandchildren that were his pride and joy, Margaret and Matthew Powers and Arden Hamstra; brother-in-law and his wife, Robert and Joan Garrison of Spencer; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

He is predeceased by a brother, Charles.

Friends may call Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, from noon to 1 p.m. at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Slater-Silvernail American Legion Post No. 806, Bainbridge, will conduct the military funeral service. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Slater-Silvernail American Legion Post No. 806, care of Charles Lord, 99 North Main St., Bainbridge, N.Y. 13733.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

W. Donald Llewelyn
COOPERSTOWN — W. Donald Llewelyn, 92, of Cooperstown, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at The Meadows.

Donald was born in Homestead, Pa., on Jan. 6, 1906, a son of William and Emma (Perkins) Llewelyn.

Mr. Llewelyn graduated from high school in the Bronx. He married Elena M. Garbarino on June 11, 1938.

Donald was an accountant for various companies in the New York City area, until is retirement.

Donald enjoyed photography, crossword puzzles, traveling, playing cards and Scrabble.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elena; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dylis and Herb Burdt of Richfield Springs and Dorothy and Stan Lewis of Medford, Long Island; four grandchildren and their spouses, Jaqueline and Mark Baxendell of Groton, Valerie and Robert Durfee of Saranac Lake, Richard and Tammy Burdt of Saranac Lake and Richard and Pam Gerard of Littleton,  Colo.; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by five sisters and two brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Church of Saint Mary with Fr. John Roos, pastor, officiating. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, for those who wish may make contributions in his name to the Activity Fund at The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33 West, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326, or to Our Lady of the Lake Church of St. Mary, 31 Elm St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326, or to a charity of their choice.

Mr. Llewelyn will be placed in the receiving vault in the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in the spring.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Charles Sutliff
BURLINGTON FLATS — Charles William Sutliff, 81, of Burlington Flats, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at The Meadows, town of Middlefield.

He was born in Davenport on June 18, 1917, the son of Henry and Mary (Schermerhorn) Sutliff, second of three children, one brother, Earl was killed in action during World War II, his sister, Hazel died in 1993.

He married Leta Heller on June 23, 1938. She died Aug. 12, 1984. On Sept. 14, 1985, he married Doris Redmond in Delhi.

Charles grew up in the Upstate Baptist Home for children and attended school in Portlandville. Charlie had worked for Dubber Brother's Hardware Store in Delhi for 10 years, before starting his own business, Sutliff Plumbing and Heating, in Delhi.

He was a veteran of World War II having served with the United States Army.

He was a member of the Donald W. Gleason American Legion Post No. 190 in Delhi for 53 years, a member of the Delhi Fire Department and also a member of the Burlington Flats Baptist Church.

Charles is survived by his wife, Doris Sutliff of Burlington Flats; two daughters, Darla Clark of Sarasota, Fla., and Sherry Sutliff of Matawan, N.J.; five grandsons; one granddaughter; five great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris.

A service to celebrate the life of Charles William Sutliff will be held in the spring. His ashes will be interred in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Upstate Baptist Home for Children, Milford, the Delhi American Legion Post No. 190, Delhi, Delhi Fire Department, Delhi, or to the Burlington Flats Baptist Church, Burlington Flats.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
