Sayers A. Lutz
PRATTSVILLE — Sayers A. Lutz, 85, of Main Street, Prattsville, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 16, 1913, in Jewett, the son of Edward B. Lutz and Nelle Ploutz.

He married Angeline Burroughs on June 30, 1938, at Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury. She died Jan. 4, 1997.

Mr. Lutz graduated from Roxbury High School and attended Cornell University.

He was associated with the family feed business in Prattsville. He also worked at the Greendell Packing Plant before becoming clerk of the Greene County Legislature, a position he held until retirement.

He was a lifelong area resident. He was a member of the Prattsville Dutch Reformed Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir. He was active in the Consistory, Classis and Synod of the Reformed Church. He served as Prattsville town supervisor and as scout master in Prattsville and was a multi-gallon blood donor in the Red Cross drives in the area. He was a 57-year member of the Oasis Lodge No. 119 F&AM and past master, a 63-year member of the Prattsville Fire Department, where he held nearly all positions of office. He was a life member of the Greene County Volunteer Fire Association.

He is survived by one daughter, Anne B. Lutz of Harrisburg, Pa.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Sayers A. and Joan Lutz of Oneonta, John and Una Lutz of Wyoming and Thomas D. and Christy Lutz of Himrod; six grandchildren, Rachel Lutz Jessup of Oneonta, Julianne Newton of Urbana, Ill., Rebecca Cross of Virginia Beach, Va., John Lutz of Webster and Lydia and Sarah Lutz of Himrod; three great-granddaughters; one sister, Louise Pierce of Medford, Ore.; and one brother, Paul Lutz of Columbia, Mo.

He was predeceased by two sisters and one brother, and one grandson, Steven Lutz.

Services to celebrate the life of Sayers A. Lutz will be conducted 2:05 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at the Dutch Reformed Church, Prattsville, with the Rev. Stephen Yon officiating.

Committal service will be in the spring at Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury. Masonic services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Prattsville Fire Department will hold a service at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Contributions in memory of Sayers A. Lutz may be made to the Dutch Reformed Church, Prattsville, or the Steven A. Lutz Scholarship Fund, care of Oneonta High School, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Richard S. Cohen
ONEONTA — Mr. Richard "Dick" S. Cohen, 79, of Oneonta, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 30, 1998, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 23, 1919, in New York City, the son of Benjamin and Rosa (Klein) Cohen. Dick married the former Anita Van Woert on Jan. 7, 1942, in Cape Cod, Mass., who survives him.

He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II serving overseas as a staff sergeant.

Dick was the purchasing agent for Oneonta Tire and Auto here in Oneonta for 36 years before his retirement.

He was a member of Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta, and the Oneonta Elks Club for 34 years.

A very loving husband and father, Dick had a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed life and his many friends.

Dick is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anita (Van Woert) Cohen of Oneonta; his daughter, Patricia Cohen of Oneonta; his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Janet Cohen of Wappingers Falls; two sisters, Marion Brooks and Bernice Gittleman, both of New York City; two grandchildren and their spouses, Shawn and Shaun Cohen of Poughquag and Michelle and Michael Kozlowski of Watertown; and two great-grandchildren, Michael Cohen and Sarah Kozlowski. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Stephen Heiss, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta, officiating. Dick will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home Private Vault to await later burial in the spring of 1999, in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta on Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, from 2 p.m. until service time when the family will be present at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers it is requested expressions of sympathy be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Richard "Dick" Cohen.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Preston Gardepe
FRANKLIN — Preston N. Gardepe, 89, of Franklin, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at his residence.

He was born June 7, 1909, in the town of Tompkins, and was raised by Theodore and Kathryn Turtur. He married E. Evelyn Roof on June 23, 1934, in Stilesville. Mrs. Gardepe died on Jan. 22, 1991.

For many years, Preston owned and operated a dairy farm on Palmer Hill Road in the town of Walton, and during the same period of time, he drove school bus for the Franklin Central School. After his retirement from the farm and school system, he worked as a caretaker at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin, along with doing part-time work for the village of Franklin.

He attended the Plymouth Church in Walton.

Preston is survived by his children and their spouses, Kathryn and Fred Banks of Franklin, Warren and Donna Gardepe of Anchorage, Alaska, Shirley and Jim Fullington of Franklin, Mary and Paul DePaolo of Franklin, Linda and Roger Seward of Unadilla, and Steven Gardepe of Franklin; 20 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Jean Gardepe of Walton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Richard Gardepe in 1997.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Carl Butler, pastor of the Pines Brook Baptist Church, Walton, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home in Franklin at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer So"ciety or the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Albert Rowlands
EDMESTON — Albert "Ozzie" R. Rowlands, 73, of Edmeston, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born Jan. 21, 1925, in Trenton, the son of John H. and Mary I. (Barns) Rowlands. He married Marjorie Truesdell on July 23, 1960, in Great Bend, Pa.

Ozzie had been employed by the town of Edmeston Highway Department for over 37 years, and for several terms served as the Highway Superintendent. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Edmeston, the NYS Retirement System, and was an honorary member of the Edmeston Fire Department and Fire Police.

Ozzie had a great love for his family and neighbors. He was also in great demand for his flavorful pies, which nobody in this area has ever been able to beat.

He is survived by his wife, Marge; his children and their spouses, David J. and Regina Rowlands, Debra Ann and Manny Beadle, Pamela E. and John Tol, and Michele E. and Paul Tasior; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his brother and sister-in-law, Robert J. and Jean Rowlands; and his sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Evertt Kane.

He was predeceased by his beloved granddaughter, Amy Lynn Beadle.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Edmeston, with the Rev. John Buskey officiating. Calling hours are at the church from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in the spring at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Oz's memory to the Edmeston Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Myron L. Tripp
SOUTH VALLEY — The Rev. Myron L. Tripp, 91, passed away, Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at his home.

He was born June 12, 1907, in Falls, Pa., the son of Alum and Alma (VanGasbeck) Tripp. On June 4, 1940, in  Johnson City Baptist Church,  Johnson City he married Andella L. Viele, who survives.

The Rev. Tripp was a graduate of Practical Bible College. He resided in this area for 56 years. He ministered in several churches including Salt Springville Church, East Worcester Church, Methodist Church of Cherry Valley, and in the South Valley Christian Church from 1940-1948 and 1951-1961. He was a member of the South Valley Christian Church.

The Rev. Tripp is survived by his wife of 58 years, Andella L. Tripp of South Valley; two sons, Roger P. Tripp and Nathan T. Tripp; two daughters, Faith S. Hitchcock and Laura H. Black, all of South Valley; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ethel Clark, Doris Stage, Thelma Cary, all of  Pennsylvania and Anna Smith of New York.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at 11 a.m. in the First Christian Church, South Valley, with the Rev. Alan Miller, pastor, officiating. The Rev. Tripp will be placed in the Ottman Funeral Home Vault to await a spring burial in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley.

Calling hours will take place on Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in the Rev. Tripp's memory may be made to the First Christian Church, South Valley.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Blanche Crossman
WEST EXETER — Blanche Crossman, 84, of West Exeter, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Folts Nursing Home in Herkimer.

She was born Jan. 13, 1914, in Hartwick, the daughter of Louis and Nellie (Tuller) Dickenson. She married George W. Crossman on June 14, 1932, in West Winfield.

Blanche and her husband, George, worked side by side throughout their various careers as truckers, parents, and farmers. She was a member of the West Exeter United Methodist Church. Blanche will be remembered by her family as a wonderful homemaker, caring for her garden, both vegetable and flower, making homemade butter and selling it, and the baking of molasses cookies and bread.

She is survived by her husband, George; her children and their spouses, Margaret and Gordon Hughes, Shirley and Brad Edwards, Linda and Peter Tophoven, and David Crossman; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Calvin, Louis and Charles Dickenson.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at 3 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. William Highfield officiating. Calling hours are one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in the spring at the West Exeter Cemetery, West Exeter.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Blanche's memory of either the West Exeter First Responders, or Folts Nursing Home, 104 N.  Washington St., Herkimer, N.Y. 13350.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Florence Fields
GILBERTSVILLE — Florence Alice Fields, 96, of Gilbertsville, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at her residence in Gilbertsville.

She was born June 7, 1902, in Eaton, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Halbert.

She was married to David S. Fields in Hobart. He died Sept. 20, 1968.

She was employed as the village librarian at the Gilbertsville Free Library from 1956 until her retirement in 1983. She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 338, Butternuts Valley. Also a member of the Four County Library System. She was also well known for her ceramics and her cross stitch.

She is survived by her two sons, David Fields Jr. and his wife, Lila, of Weedsport and Richard Fields of Gilbertsville; a brother, Ralph Halbert of  Pennsylvania; two granddaughters, Lori Anna and her husband, Michael, of Weedsport and Linda Search and her husband, Douglas, of Red Hook; and two great-grandchildren, Gregory and Cara Search. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband and five sisters.

Private funeral services will be held at a later date and interment will be in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

There will be no calling hours and friends are asked to donate to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad or the Gilbertsville Free Library or the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

Marvin Lidell
SOUTH EDMESTON — Marvin Lidell, 75, of South Edmeston, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

He was born Aug. 26, 1923, in New Berlin, the son of Don A. and Gladys (Follett) Lidell.

He spent his childhood in South Edmeston. He graduated from New Berlin Central School and attended Hartwick College.

Marvin was associated with the family business for 40 years.

He was a member of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church, New Berlin.

He was active in the Boy Scouts. He had a vast knowledge of railroading and was especially interested in local railroads. He was also a lifelong student of history and music.

He is survived by one brother, Wallace D. Lidell and his wife, Sarah, of South Edmeston; his nieces, Susan Klim and Gail Browning; nephews, Tim Lidell and Chris Geiselmann; grandnephews, Sean Klim, Lee Geiselmann and Brian Browning; and grandniece, Susan Browning.

Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles Taylor, of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, New Berlin. Interment will be in the St. Andrews Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the Activity Fund of The Meadows, Cooperstown or to St. Andrews Episcopal Church.

Funeral arrangements are by Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Stewart Andrews
UNADILLA — Mr. Stewart C. Andrews, 86, of Unadilla, formerly of Albany, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 1, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born July 31, 1912, in Otego, the son of Clark C. and Lulu (Dolliver) Andrews.

Stewart was married to the former Alice Burdick. She died in 1997.

Prior to his retirement, Stewart was a carpenter for the Albany Local Carpenters Union. He was a resident of Otego for 50 years before moving to the Albany area in the mid-1960s. He enjoyed hunting and fishing as a pastime.

He is survived by two sons, Stewart Andrews of Boulder, Mont., and Allan Andrews of Colorado. Also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his wife, Alice, in 1997, two sons, Clark Andrews in 1965 and Virgil Andrews in 1997, and one daughter, Helen in 1998.

There will be no funeral services.

Mr. Andrews will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory in Morris.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.
