Harlon R. Briscoe
COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Harlon R. Briscoe, 86, of Cooperstown, formerly of Maryland, N.Y., died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at the Otsego County Infirmary, town of Middlefield.

He was born July 3, 1912, in the town of Otego, the son of Frank and Carrie (Gardner) Briscoe.

Harlon married the former Beulah Truesdell on Aug. 30, 1939. They divorced in 1973.

In his early years, Harlon worked for the Hamilton Farms in Oneonta and later ran the Hathaway Farm in Otego, until moving to Bovina, where he owned and operated his own dairy farm beginning in 1945. In 1980, he retired, moving to Milford. During that time he served as caretaker of the Milford Cemetery, Milford. In 1986, Harlon moved to the Shady Acres Trailer Court in Maryland, until admission to the Otsego County Infirmary. Harlon was a former member of the Bovina Center Volunteer Fire Department, Delaware County Farm Bureau, and the Buttons and Bows Square Dance Club.

He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Edward (Shirley) Slicer of Oneonta, Mrs. Wallace (Phyllis) Hennings of De Lancey, Mrs. Alden (Janice) Burdick of Bloomville, Mrs. Glen (Barbara) Miller of Walton, and Mrs. Frank (Laura) Aji of South Glens Falls; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard H. and Liliane Briscoe of East Meredith; two sisters, Mrs. Howard (Adah) Michaels of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Mrs. Howard (Mildred) Robbins of Goodyear Lake, Maryland; one brother and sister-in-law, Alton E. and Geraldine Briscoe of Mesa, Ariz.; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Edna Briscoe of Cooperstown and Vivian Briscoe of West Oneonta.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Vernard Briscoe, and a sister, Pearl Emerson.

Funeral and committal services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. George Goodwin, retired pastor of Worcester, officiating.

Mr. Briscoe will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home Private Vault to await spring burial in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

Friends may call at the Book"hout Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, from 1 to 2 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Petrina Christensen
DAVENPORT CENTER — Mrs. Petrina Christensen, 88, of Davenport Center, died Friday evening, Jan. 1, 1999, at the O'Conner Hospital, Delhi.

She was born Feb. 6, 1910, in Fords, N.J., the daughter of Nels and Marie (Dahl) Petersen.

Petrina was married to Marinus Christensen. He died in 1973.

She was a homemaker and also did catering for special occasions. Petrina's specialty was Danish pastries. She moved to Davenport Center in December 1947, with her family where the family farm was operated by her late husband, and is now operated by her son, Ray Christensen, and his family. Petrina was formerly a member of the Danish Brotherhood of Oneonta, and Eastern Star in New Jersey.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Gail Christensen of Davenport Center; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Hans and Dorothy Petersen of Edison, N.J., and William Petersen of the state of Florida; one son-in-law, Eugene Pinuel of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren and their spouses, Tina and Paul Ruby of Jacksonville, Fla., Chris and Jeanne-Marie Christensen of Yorktown Heights, Katrina and Mike Crandell of Oneonta, Erik and Juliann Christensen of Davenport Center and Peter Christensen of Davenport Center. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Marinus Y. Christensen, and her daughter, Helen Pinuel.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Tracie Martin, pastor of the Davenport United Presbyterian Church, Davenport, officiating.

Mrs. Christensen will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home Private Vault to await spring burial in the Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, when the Christensen family will be present at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to the Countryside Care Center, Walton Road, Delhi, N.Y. 13753 in memory of Petrina Christensen.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Matthew McKinney
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Matthew M. McKinney, 37, of Elm Street, died unexpectedly on Sunday evening, Jan. 3, 1999, as a result of a snowmobile accident.

He was born on Feb. 12, 1961, in Ilion, a son of Carlton Thomas and Dorothy Bruso McKinney.

A lifelong area resident, he graduated from Herkimer High School. A United States Army veteran, he served as MP in England, Germany, Labador and the states until his honorable discharge in 1991.

On Feb. 1, 1986, he married Lisa Cloutier in Mohawk. He had been employed as a serviceman for Titan Mobile Homes Inc., located in Sangerfield, since 1991.

Matthew was a devoted family man. He enjoyed nature and all the outdoor sports with each changing season. Fishing, hunting and snowmobiling were among his favorite pastime events. He was also a devoted fan of Dale Jerrett.

He was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Snow Topper Snow Mobile Club, a member of DAV No. 162, where he had served as senior vice-commander, a life member of the American Legion Herkimer as well as a member of the Richfield Springs Vets Club.

Surviving besides his wife, Lisa, and his parents, Carlton "Tom" and Dorothy McKinney of Herkimer, are his children, Eric, April, Kelly, Krystal and Allyson, all of the home address; one brother, Michael and his wife, Debra of Mohawk; two sisters, Michele Conklin and her husband, Mark of Ilion, and Marcia McKinney of Herkimer; his mother and father-in-law, Linda and Thomas Herringshaw of Portlandville; four sister-in-laws; three brother-in-laws; and their families, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many very special friends.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at 10 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 W. James St., Richfield Springs.

Matthew will then be placed in the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home Private Receiving Vault to await burial with full military honors in Oak Hill Cemetery next spring.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Rescue Squad.

William J. Sanford
BAINBRIDGE — William J. Sanford, 18, passed away with his sweetheart, Sarah Thomas, Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at The Hospital, Sidney.

Bill was born to Dale and Sharon Smith Sanford on Aug. 24, 1980, in Sidney.

He was a graduate of Bainbride-Guilford High School in 1998. Bill was an avid soccer and basketball player. He volunteered at the Food Bank in Bainbridge. Bill had just finished his first semester at Alfred State University on Dean's List with a 4.0. He also volunteered as a tutor at college. Bill was very artistic, he enjoyed sketching and photography.

Bill is survived by his father and stepmother, Dale and Sherry Sanford of Bainbridge; his mother, Sharon Sanford of Bainbridge; maternal grandfather, Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Smith of Bainbridge; maternal grandmother, Marilyn Smith of Bainbridge; dear sister and brother-in-law, Tammy Jean and John Banks of Sidney; two nieces, Brittney and Ashleigh; one nephew, Nathan Banks; aunts and uncles, Ambrose and Dara Smith Jr. of Bainbridge, Arthur Smith of Bainbridge, Douglas Smith of Bainbridge, David and Maryellen Smith of Bainbridge, David Sanford of Binghamton, Douglas and Carol Sanford of Haver Hill, Mass., Shelia Zipfel of Bainbridge, Carla Finn of Bainbridge and Chris Bubny of Bainbridge; stepaunts and uncles, Phillip and Deb O'dell, David O'dell and Randy O'dell; special friend, Bob Wayman of Bainbridge; stepgrandparents, Ronald and Esther O'dell of Downsville; many cousins, stepcousins and friends.

Friends may call Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, from the First Presbyterian Church, Bainbridge at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Suzan Zink, officiating.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the William J. Sanford Scholarship Fund.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Park Leslie Bedford
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Park Leslie Bedford, 84, of Woodside Avenue, died on Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, in his home.

He was born on Feb. 25, 1914, in Onawa, Iowa, the son of the late James R. and Ethel Hoar Bedford.

He was raised and educated in Iowa and was a graduate of Iowa State University.

On Feb. 10, 1940, he married El"izabeth "Betty" Belshaw in Crownpoint, Ind.

He had worked as an engineer for the Commonwealth Edison Company, Chicago, Ill., and then went on to  Washington, D.C., where he worked in the now defunct Signal Corp. He later worked as chief engineer for the Department of the Army, retiring in 1971. That same year he moved to the village of Springfield Center, where he was a member of the Springfield Center Volunteer Fire Department. He moved to Richfield Springs in 1990, and was a member of the Utica Computer Club.

Surviving him besides his wife of 58 years, Betty, are three children, William Bedford of Thurmont, Md., Catherine Ray of Frederick, Md., and Barbara Shirey of Walawala, Wash.; one sister, Faye Terry of Minneapolis, Minn.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held later this spring, at a time and place to be announced.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs.

Austin B. Anthony
COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Austin B. Anthony, 83, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare.

He was born on Jan. 11, 1915, in Bayonne, N.J., a son of Gilbert and Christina ( Schmidt) Anthony.

Mr. Anthony married Irma H. Zimmermann on Nov. 2, 1940. Austin was a senior engineer for General Motors in Linden, N.J.

Mr. Anthony played semi-pro basketball before the NBA was established. He also enjoyed golf and bowling. Mr. Anthony was a Mason (Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite) as well as a Shriner.

Austin is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Lynn and Eric Rheinhardt of Cooperstown and Lois and Joe Fink of Norris, Tenn.; nine grandchildren, Justin, Nathan, Erica, Sam, Rebecca and Alexandra Rheinhardt, Christine Maranbio, and Michael and Susan Fink; a sister, Vera Hammel in Watchung, N.J.; and a cousin, Beverly Jackal.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Douglas Burleigh, chaplain at Bassett Healthcare, officiating. Calling hours will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in the spring at Lakewood Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

George L. Rock
WORCESTER — George L. Rock, 92, of Worcester, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at the Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

He was born Oct. 6, 1906, in Worcester, the son of John and Vernie (Mereness) Rock.

He married Beatrice Wilsey on Oct. 18, 1933, at her parents home in Worcester. The couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last October.

Mr. Rock was a farmer most of his life and was also employed at Beechnut Corp. in Canajoharie, for five years.

Mr. Rock was a member of the Worcester United Methodist Church and the Worcester Grange No. 1274.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice; his son and daughter-in-law, Arnold J. and Sandra Rock of Worcester; daughter, Doris Rock of Worcester; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Russell; two brothers, Howard and DeWayne Rock; and two sisters, Bessie Groff and Erva Rock.

At Mr. Rock's request he will be cremated and a graveside committal service will take place at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, in the spring.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in memory of Mr. Rock to the Worcester United Methodist Church, Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., Worcester.

Marie Latendorf
ONEONTA — Marie Latendorf, 90, of Oneonta, formerly of Merrick, Long Island, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

She was born Dec. 26, 1908, in Gundelfingen, Germany, the daughter of Christian and Luise (Wolfsperger) Leimstoll.

She was raised and educated in Germany, and went on for governess training in Switzerland before immigrating to the United States in 1932.

Marie married Henry Latendorf in 1942. He predeceased her June 23, 1964.

She was a homemaker and member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Merrick, Long Island. She moved to Oneonta in 1988.

She is survived by her daughter, Gwen Schuster, and son-in-law, Dr. Rudolph Schuster; her stepgrandson, Chris Schuster of Concord, Mass.; and her sister, Anna Sperling of Gundelfingen, Germany. She is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews and their spouses and children in Germany and Switzerland.

She was predeceased by six sisters, Berta, Elise, Luise, Lina, Frieda and Lydia, and six brothers, Max, Friedrich, Karl, Christian, Willi and Emil, in Germany and Switzerland.

At Marie's request, her remains will be donated to the Anatomical Gift Program at Albany Medical Center. There will be no calling hours. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by the Hans Funeral Home, Albany.

Mary Gielskie
DELHI — Mary Gielskie, 93, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at the Country Side Care Center, Delhi.

She was born Sept. 18, 1905, in Eakly, Okla., the daughter of the late Pearl and George Burk.

She moved to the De Lancey area in 1922. She married John Gielskie on Aug. 4, 1926.

Mrs. Gielskie was a homemaker and life member of the De Lancey United Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Gielskie is survived by four daughters, Virginia Bartkow of Huntington, W. Va., Marian Fountain of Afton, Alice Beatty of Mirimar, Fla., and Margaret Conner of Walton; three sons, David and Alex Gielskie of De Lancey and Kenneth Gielskie of Melbourne, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Her husband, John, and son Francis predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, in the De Lancey United Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Leigh Holder-Bobo officiating. Interment will be in the Hamden Cemetery, Hamden.

Friends may call at the Moxley-McCall Funeral Home, Delhi, at their convenience. There will be no family calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to De Lancey United Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements are by Moxley-McCall Funeral Home, Delhi.
