Thomas C. Yanson
ONEONTA — Thomas C. Yanson, 69, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness.

He was born March 4, 1929, in Grand Gorge, the son of Ralph and Helen (Brady) Yanson.

Tom attended school in Grand Gorge, and for a period of time, he was employed by the Greendell Packing Corp. in Prattsville. After moving to the Oneonta area in 1984, he worked briefly for ARC.

He was a member of the Amalgamated Meat Packers Union.

Tom is survived by two aunts, Virginia Minnerly and Sara L. Brady, both of Port Charlotte, Fla.; an uncle, George Brady of Boise, Idaho; and several cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Judy L. Quarles, minister of the Oneonta Unitarian Universalist Society, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring in the Fairview Cemetery, Grand Gorge.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ivan F. Church
STAMFORD — Mr. Ivan F. Church, 85, of Stamford, formerly of Oneonta, died Monday morning, Jan. 4, 1999, at the Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

He was born Dec. 16, 1913, in Silver Lake, the son of Fred R. and Anna (Wightman) Church.

Ivan was a self-employed repairman doing mostly repairs on electronics.

Graveside funeral services will be held in the spring in the Brookside Cemetery, Gilbertsville.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of one's choice in loving memory of Ivan F. Church.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

John R. Adams
COOPERSTOWN — John R. Adams, 85, of Beaver Street in Cooperstown, died Monday evening, Jan. 4, 1999, at The Meadows.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1913, in New York City, a son of William R. and Bridget (Gehrauty) Adams. He married Dorothy Smith on Nov. 20, 1935, in Richfield Springs. Mrs. Adams died on March 4, 1987.

John was a lifelong resident of Cooperstown and attended Cooperstown schools. A veteran of the United States Army, he served his country during World War II with the 421st Ordnance Evacuation Company. For a brief period of time he worked for the Clark Estates on their sheep farms but spent the majority of his career working as a gunsmith for Remington Arms in Ilion, retiring in 1972.

John was an avid sportsman, playing three sports in his high school years. He was also an accomplished golfer and will be remembered for being a part of the Forty Year Foursome. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, and will be lovingly remembered by his family and neighbors for his blackberry picking.

John was a member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, the Native Sons of Cooperstown, the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 and the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Carol and the Rev. William Highfield of Burlington Flats; one son and daughter-in-law, John A. (Jack) and Hetty Adams of Cooperstown; five grandchildren, Daniel Adams and his wife, Sophia, Michael Adams and his wife, Terrie, Timothy Adams and his wife, Diane, Jay Highfield and Ann Lomonaco; five great-grandchildren, John and Nicole Adams, Brett and David Adams and Jennifer Smith; one sister-in-law, Ethel Smith of Cooperstown; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. Kathryn Vroman, and two brothers, James P. Adams and Joseph Adams.

John's family wishes to thank everyone at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, Woodside Hall, The Meadows, Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, and the Rev. Jeff Hale for their kind, considerate and understanding care during his illness.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Jeff Hale, pastor of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial with full military honors conducted by the Cooperstown Veterans Club will be at a later date in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday afternoon from 1 p.m. until service time, when John's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to Woodside Hall, 1 Main St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Peter A. Zintel
MILFORD — Mr. Peter A. Zintel, 87, of 3197 state Highway 28, town of Milford, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Nov. 26, 1911, in Yonkers, a son of George and Kathrine (Rhinehardt) Zintel.

Mr. Zintel married Elizabeth A. Finn on Feb. 28, 1933, in Yonkers. Peter was employed at the State University College at Oneonta until his retirement.

Mr. Zintel was past commander of the Milford American Legion Post 1566, a member of Walter P. Eggleston Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown, secretary of the Milford Fish and Game Club for many years, a member of the Milford Fire Department, Emergency Squad and Fire Police, and a member of the 40 and 8.

Peter enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, canoeing, ice skating and swimming.

He is survived by two daughters, Beverly Beach and Adlain Zintel, both of Milford; a son, Peter D. Zintel of Oneonta; grandchildren, Deryl Beach, Deirdre and C.J. Yerdon, Denise and Tom Brigham, Dwayne Beach, Darren Beach, Dale and Cindy Beach, Larry and Kelly Gell, Peter and Laura Gell, Peter S. Zintel, Jody Zintel, Joseph and Holly Zintel and Veronica Schaeffer; and 20 great-grandchildren, Shaun, Christopher, Jeremy, Jeff, Liz, Emily, Katie, Andrew, Dale Jr., Brittany, John, Ashleigh, Johnathon, Lauren, Zachary, Mackenzie, Mitchell, Kaitlyn, Cheyenne and Saysha; and his loving cat, Ichabod.

He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth, on July 18, 1998, and three sisters and four brothers.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford with Fr. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church of Oneonta, officiating. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford, when the family will be in attendance.

Mr. Zintel will be placed in the Receiving Vault at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown until burial in the spring in the Milford Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers for those who wish may make contributions to the Walter A. Beach Scholarship Fund, care of Dale Beach, P.O. Box 73, Milford, N.Y. 13807.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Joseph Seroka
OTEGO — Joseph Seroka, 81, of Otego, formerly a 54 year resident of Fort Plain, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at home.

He was born March 2, 1917, in Brooklyn, to Leopold and Stella (Jurewicz) Saroka, who had emigrated from Poland. He and Mary Bellen were married March 2, 1940, in Canajoharie. She died in 1995.

Joe was a veteran of World War II, serving his country as a merchant marine in the Atlantic and Pacific war zones. He was chief cook aboard several ships.

Before his retirement in 1982, Joe worked for more than 30 years for Adler's Creamery in Fort Plain, and later as a truck driver and mechanic for Old Colonie.

Joe was a life member of the Fort Plain Retired Firemen and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the American Legion Post 0554 in Fort Plain and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, local 2774, in Utica, since 1942.

Joe is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Jean Seroka of Otego; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Glenn Seroka, and Lee Anne Viscosi and her husband, John; great-grandchildren, Michael and Jade Seroka; sister, Mania Bellman; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and sisters, Estella Saroka and Joan Richardson.

There will be no calling hours. A committal service will be held in the spring at the Fort Plain Cemetery. Friends are invited to make memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, the American Cancer Society, or any organization of their choice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Nellie Wheeler
EDMESTON — Nellie Martha Wheeler, 87, of Edmeston, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 11, 1911, in Appleton, Wis., the daughter of John and Mary (Biesterveld) Berben.

She was married to Mervin (Bill) Wheeler, Nov. 21, 1936, in West Winfield. He died Dec. 15, 1987.

Nellie was a registered nurse graduating from Faxton School of Nursing. She was a very active member of the Second Baptist Church of Edmeston and had served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was also a member of the Faxton Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association.

She is survived by her three children, Marie Wheeler-Rockwell of Solvay, Anne Wheeler of Edmeston and John Wheeler of Edmeston; six grandchildren, Tim and Tina Rockwell and Jeffrey, Michael, Gretchen and Amy Wheeler; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Zorda of Tampa, Fla.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Christopher Rockwell, and a sister, Wilma Page.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at 10 a.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston, with the Rev. Jay Henderson officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Edmeston Union Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at the funeral home.

Those who wish may donate to the Edmeston Emergency Squad in her memory.

Holly P. Decker
MORRIS — Holly P. Decker, 87, of Morris, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at the Mountainside Nursing Home in Margaretville.

She was born April 30, 1911, in Chadsford, Pa., the daughter of Carl Johan Petersen and Hensina (Rasmussen) Petersen.

She was married to George Wendell Decker on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, 1932, at the St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Laurens. He died Nov. 16, 1984.

She and her husband owned and operated the Associated Graning Co. in Morris.

She was very instrumental in bringing the 4-H horse project to New York state.

Holly is survived by a daughter, Sharon Werner, and her husband, Frank, of Morris; a grandson, Paul Werner and his wife, Teresa, of Norwich; and several cousins.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Laurens, with the Rev. Lynn Ash officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris. Calling hours will be from noon on Thursday until service time at 1 p.m.

Friends are asked to donate to the St. Matthew's Lutheran Church of Laurens or the Morris Emergency Squad in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

Victor E. Bye
BAINBRIDGE — Victor E. Bye of Bainbridge died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, in Rochester.

He is survived by his son, Victor P. Bye of Rochester; his former wife, Frances Bye of Florida; stepchildren, Daniel Rooney, Carol Newcomb and Frances Murphy; and nine stepgrandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at Asbury First United Methodist Church, 1050 East Ave., Rochester.

Memorial donations may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 1400 N. Winton Rd., Rochester, 14609.

Arrangements are by the Anthony Funeral Chapel Inc., Rochester.

Grace K. Scofield
HAMDEN — Grace K. Scofield, 90, a longtime Hamden resident, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 5, 1999, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where she had been a resident for the past seven years.
She was born Dec. 11, 1908, in Hancock, the daughter of Ziba and Margaret (Platt) Seymour.

Grace grew up in Cannonsville, where she received her primary education and was a graduate of Deposit High School.

She married John J. Scofield in Deposit on July 31, 1930, at which time the couple moved to Hamden, where they were active in the community for more than 60 years. They had one son, Chester E. Scofield, who died in 1975.

Mr. Scofield, who was a Hamden rural letter carrier for 35 years, died July 30, 1997.

Grace was musically talented and enjoyed playing piano and organ and was a member of the Walton Organ Club, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Rural Letter Carriers and the Hamden United Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two grandsons and their wives, James D. and Ruth Scofield and Dale I. and Katherine Scofield, all of Meredith; two great-granddaughters, April and Sally Scofield; a sister, Doris Hamlin of Chenango Bridge; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi, where the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight.

Funeral and committal services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at the Hamden U.P. Church by the Rev. H. Leigh Holder-Bobo, pastor, and burial will be later in the Hamden Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hamden U.P. Church.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Stewart Steenrod
OTEGO — Mr. Stewart Steenrod, 81, of Otego, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at his residence.

He was born May 26, 1917, in the town of Otego, the son of Henry and Leora (Hopkins) Steenrod.

Stewart married the former Ella Leonard on Oct. 27, 1939, in Otego, who surivives him.

He served in the Army Air Corp. during the World War II.

Stewart had been a machine operator for the Department of Transportation, Oneonta, for 31 years, retiring in 1972. He also operated Steenrods Antiques and Used Furniture in Otego for a number of years. He was a member of the Otego United Methodist Church, Otego Fire Department, Otego American Legion and former member of Otego International Order of Odd Fellows and the Otego Rotary Club.

Stewart is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ella Steenrod of Otgeo; a son, Robert S. Steenrod of Otego; four sisters, Mrs. Ora (Irma) Sullivan of Greene, Mrs. Albert (Mae) Utter of Oneonta, Mrs. Ada Flynn of Oneonta and Mrs. John (Abertina) Barnwell of Syracuse; two grandsons, James Stewart Steenrod and Dale Robert Steenrod; two great-grandchildren, Jamie Lee Steenrod and Damian Michael Steenrod; four sisters-in-law, Gladys Leonard of Oneonta, Irene Leonard of Unadilla, Alice Leonard of Otego and Evelyn Steenrod of Oneonta. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Emmons Steenrod, and two sisters, Sara Steenrod and Irene Colgrove.

A service to celebrate the life of Stewart Steenrod will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, with the Rev. Keith Marlette, formerly of Oneonta, officiating.

Stewart was cremated and his cremains will be interred in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego, at a late date.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego, from 1 p.m. to service time on Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be given to Otego American Legion, Otego, N.Y. 13825 or the Otego Fire Department, River Street, Otego, N.Y. 13825 in memory of Stewart Steenrod.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
