Rebecca Paternoster
WALTON — Rebecca Retz Paternoster, 86, a true Waltonian and throughout her life a lady, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Wilson Hospital,  Johnson City. Two of her three children, John and Andrea, were at her bedside when she passed away.

She was born at 84 Delaware St. in Walton on Sept. 5, 1912, she was the daughter of Henry W. and Edith Bouck Retz.

She graduated from Walton High School in 1929, and went on to Skidmore College, from which she graduated in 1933, with her bachelor's degree in home economics.

She was twice married, first to Patrick Webster. She later married Francis R. Paternoster.

Always content to be a homemaker and mother, she nevertheless went into business once her children were old enough to be left to their own devices.

Around 1960, Mrs. Paternoster entered the business world by starting up Catskill Travel Agency, the first such business in Delaware County. She eventually grew the business to include offices in Sidney and Cooperstown.

If there was ever anyone who took joy in the mere act of living, it was Mrs. Paternoster, who took her greatest pleasure from the company of her wide range of family and friends. There was nothing that was more enjoyable to her than meeting new people to add to her circle of friends.

She was intensely involved in the lives of her children, took great pride in their accomplishments and helped share the burdens of disappointments.

During her life she spent many a pleasurable hour on the golf course and at the bridge table — dreading competitive players and looking forward only to the enjoyment of the game and the company.

Mrs. Paternoster also very much enjoyed traveling, and over the years, took trips to Europe, the South Pacific, Egypt and Greece, among other destinations.

First and foremost, though, she loved her town and the people in it. She will be missed.

Possessed of a sharp mind and wit, she enjoyed conversations with one and all, and devoured the daily papers to keep abreast of current affairs, about which she always had opinions. She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor.

Surviving Mrs. Paternoster are her children, John Paternoster of Taos, N.M., Mark and Leslie Paternoster of Portales, N.M., and Andrea Paternoster of Walton; grandchildren, Elisabeth Paternoster of Port Chester and Todd and MacKenzie Paternoster of Sidney Center; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Louis D. and Henry W. Retz, and a sister, Grace Retz Lofgren.

Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, Walton. A reception to toast the life of Rebecca Paternoster will be held at the family home at 39 Gardiner Place following the service. All of her friends and relatives are invited to attend.
