Julia Ross Bordley
COOPERSTOWN — Julia Ross Bordley, 93, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at St. Ann's Home in Rochester.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on May 3, 1905, the daughter of Walter Lewis and Julia (Chandler) Ross, and completed her education there at the Springside School in 1923. She attended art school and later ran a woman's boutique in Chestnut Hill, Pa. After some time pursuing her varied interests, she became the summer manager of the Bar BC Ranch Store in Moose, Wyo. It was there that she met Dr. James Bordley III, who was working as ranch physician during his sum"-mer vacation. Following their marriage on July 4, 1936, they lived in Baltimore, Md., where Dr. Bordley was associate physician and chief of the Cardio-Vascular Division at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Shortly after he returned from military service with the Hopkins Unit during World War II, Dr. Bordley accepted the position of director of the M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. The couple moved to Cooperstown with their family in 1947.

During the 20 years that Dr. Bordley was the director of Bassett, Mrs. Bordley was involved in many aspects of hospital life. She considered it important to support and encourage the close-knit and personal spirit of the Bassett staff and made it a point each year to invite all the members of the professional staff, including residents and interns, to Christmas gatherings at Worthington House, their home on Main Street. (In those days staff members were on call at Bassett every other weekend, so the parties were held on two consecutive weekends so that everyone could attend.) Mrs. Bordley also was involved in the activities of the Hospital Auxiliary, serving as its president for several years. She continued this work long after her husband, who predeceased her in January 1979, had retired.

She was a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church and the Lake and Valley Garden Club. She was also an enthusiastic bicyclist, and could be seen pedaling her bike, complete with basket and little red flag, around the village and up and down the Lake Road well into her 80s.

Although she spent her final years at St. Ann's Home in Rochester, she considered herself a Cooperstown resident until the time of her death.

Mrs. Bordley's main endeavor, though, was the raising of her three children who, together with their many friends, took up a great deal of her time and patience.

She is survived by her children, daughter, Patricia, and son-in-law, Roderick D. Wiltse, of St. Louis, Mo.; son, Dr. James Bordley IV, and daughter-in-law, Dianne, of Cooperstown; and son, Dr. Donald R. Bordley, and daughter-in-law, Priscilla, of Rochester. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Diana, Andrew, Jonathan, Jessica, Seth, James V, Erin, Christopher, and Kathleen; and five great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Christ Church, Cooperstown, with the Very Rev. Douglas C. Smith officiating and her son-in-law, the Rev. Roderick D. Wiltse, assisting. Burial will follow in the Christ Church Columbarium (St. Joseph of Arimathea Columbarium).

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the M.I. Bassett Hospital Auxiliary or Christ Episcopal Church.

Funeral services are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
