Julia C. MacKenzie
EDMESTON — Julia C. MacKenzie, 91, of "Happy Hill" Edmeston, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, after a brief illness at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born on Long Island in 1907. In 1934, she married Norton W. "Bud" MacKenzie.

She was a graduate of Hunter College and Fordham University.

She was predeceased by her husband in July 1989, and by her daughter, Margaret Savidge, in August 1994.

For several years she was a teacher. She taught English, junior high and elementary, in New Jersey, before her marriage. She lived in Maplewood, N.J., from 1939 to 1966, at which time they moved to Edmeston.

She was a member of the Eastern Star, a Girl Scout leader, and a member of the Edmeston Free Library Board. She was a gardener and an avid correspondent.

She is survived by her son, John W., and wife, June MacKenzie; grandchildren, Debra MacKenzie, Mark W. and wife, Christine MacKenzie, John and wife, Mariella Savidge, David and Hyang-Lan Savidge, and Tom Savidge; great-grandchildren, Rebekah MacKenzie, Kelley, Sarah, Jessica and Jake Savidge, Schuyler Levi and Xavira Savidge; brother, Alfred, and wife, Kate Fiechter, of California; and sister, Alice Shultz of New Hampshire.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Edmeston Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements are pending through Houk-Johnston Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Walter L. Weller
MARGARETVILLE — Walter L. Weller, 61, of Margaretville, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at the Albany Veterans Hospital.

He was born July 21, 1937, in Yonkers, the son of Walter and Stella Weller.

He married Miriam Sadak on Aug. 2, 1971, in Maryland.

He joined the Merchant Marines in 1960.

He worked for the Tree Preservation Co. in Yonkers, where he also was a driver for the Medicare van.

He moved to Margaretville in 1981. He was a member of the Middletown American Legion Post 216, the Sacred Heart Parish, Margaretville, and the Carpenters Union.

He is survived by his wife, Miriam Weller of Margaretville; his mother, Stella Weller of Yonkers; two daughters, Christine and son-in-law, Michael Valli, of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Jennifer Weller and family of Denver; one son, William Brew and family of Margaretville; seven grandchildren; a brother, Richard Weller of Yonkers; a sister, Dorothy Daretta of Ossining; and nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell officiating. Committal services will take place in the spring at Shavertown Cemetery, Andes.

Calling hours are Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Aubrey D. Pearce
DELHI — Aubrey D. Pearce, 81, of Delhi, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at the O'Connor Hospital, Delhi, unexpectedly.

He was born June 9, 1917, in Delhi, the son of Henry and Evelyn Scott Pearce. He was born and raised in Delhi.

He was a 1934 graduate of A.L. Kellogg School in Treadwell.

He married Jean (Laughman) Pearce on Nov. 18, 1961, in Delhi.

He lived on West Platner Brook Road in Delhi. He was a retired town of Delhi employee.

He was a former self-employed farmer having sold butter, eggs and other products throughout the Walton, Hamden and Delhi area.

He attended the West Delhi United Presbyterian Church.

He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Pearce of Delhi; his daughters, Linda J. Pearce of Delhi, Lorna L. Pearce of Delhi and Barbara E. Pearce of Delhi; sister, Orel (Phillip) Merrill of Delhi; brother-in-law, William Laughman of Margaretville; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service at the Walton Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the West Delhi United Presbyterian Church and the Delhi Emergency Squad.

There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc., 102 Delaware St., Walton.

Marguerite A. Schweizer
MARGARETVILLE — Marguerite A. Schweizer, 81, of Margaretville, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

She was born Aug. 25, 1917, in New York City, the daughter of John Henry Stegeman and Metta VonKempen.

She married Michael Schweizer. He died in 1970.

She was a homemaker. She lived in Margaretville for the past several years.

She is survived by her grandnephew, Joseph Lindner Jr.; her grandnieces, Heidi Friedman and JoAnn Lindner; and great-grandnieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one son, John Schweizer.

A private service at the convenience of the family will be held in the spring at the Halcottsville Cemetery, Halcottsville.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Robert P. Burgin
FRANKLIN — Robert P. Burgin, 84, of Franklin, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 26, 1914, in Franklin, the son of George O. and Isabelle (Penfield) Burgin. He married Helen Sawyer on June 14, 1939, in Sidney.

During World War II, Bob worked at Scintilla in Sidney, until he became a partner with his father-in-law, Leon Sawyer, on a dairy farm in the town of Unadilla. In 1950, Bob purchased the Julius Hansen farm in the town of Franklin. He operated that up until the death of his son, Peter, in 1962.

In 1963, he continued his education at Syracuse University, from which he received his bachelor's degree in history. He then continued his working career and became associated with such companies as Una-Lamb, Royalite Corp., Im-Pru-All Corp. and the Beefalo Association. He also, along with his wife, Helen, cared for several infirmed and handicapped people in and around the Franklin area.

In 1969, he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. Best known as a people person, Bob's talents were best utilized in his various positions in the church, which included, clerk, Elder's Quorum president and second counselor to the president. He also served for many years, prior to his retirement at age 78, as the church custodian.

He was a charter member of the Franklin Rotary Club and a former mason. Bob had varied interests. However, he mostly enjoyed sports, music, reading and his family.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen Burgin of Franklin; his children and their spouses, Bryan and Dorlyn Burgin of Sidney Center, Marc and Anne Burgin of Franklin and Eric and Lynn Burgin of Otego; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Elizabeth B. Holt of Franklin; and a brother and sister-in-law, John I. and Patricia Burgin of Franklin. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Peter Burgin, in 1962.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in West Oneonta, with President James Maher officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.

Friends may call on Thursday evening from 7 to 9 at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home in Franklin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, the Franklin Emergency Squad or the Franklin Free Library.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Alan McEwan
COOPERSTOWN — Dr. Alan Fletcher McEwan, V.M.D., 82, of Cooperstown died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare.

He was born June 23, 1916, in Cooperstown, a son of Paul and Mabel (Talbot) McEwan.

Dr. McEwan graduated from Cooperstown High School in 1933, and was an undergraduate of Cornell University. He was a graduate of the University of  Pennsylvania Veterinary School.

On Dec. 27, 1941, he married Jean Frances Hanlon of Elizabeth, N.J. They resided in  Washington, D.C., from 1941-1980, where he was a veterinarian most recently at the Ross Veterinary Hospital.

Dr. McEwan was a past president of the Lakewood Cemetery Association, president of the Farmers' Museum, a board member of NYSHA, a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, District Board of Medical Examiners, a communicant of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and an avid golfer.

Dr. McEwan is survived by two daughters, Barbara McEwan Pope of Cooperstown and Ann McEwan Marnell and her husband, Roger, of Huntsville, Ala.; grandchildren, D. Brent Pope Jr. and his wife, Gina, of Seattle, Wash., Ellen Fletcher Pope of Arlington, Va., David Alan Marnell, Amy Hanlon Marnell and Sarah Ann Marnell, all of Huntsville, Ala., and Michael Telfer Marnell of Camp LeJuene, N.C.; a great granddaughter, Sage McEwan Pope of Seattle, Wash.; and a brother, William T. McEwan of North Carolina.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jean Hanlon McEwan, in 1985, and a brother, Richard H. McEwan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at 3 p.m. at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, with Fr. John R. Roos officiating.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

Dr. McEwan will be placed in the receiving vault at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown. Burial will be at Lakewood Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers for those who wish may make contributions in his name to the Lakeland Valley Tribute Fund at 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown or to the Susquehanna S.P.C.A., Hyde Park, Cooperstown, N.Y.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Elfreida  White
BELLEVIEW, Fla. — Elfreida Smith  White passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Belleview, Fla.

She was born in Fork Shop Corners, N.Y., on Sept. 19, 1910, the daughter of Benjamin and Kathryne Lewis Wort.

She was educated in Cooperstown schools and graduated from college in Connecticut.

She was married to Raymond Smith of Cooperstown and lived there for many years. Later in life she married Olin Skidmore and lived in Florida. Sometime after Mr. Skidmore's death she married Leonard  White, who predeceased her.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane Hallenbeck; stepchildren, Willard and Joy Skidmore; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and her friend and sister-in-law, Catherine VanWoert; and her cousin, Kay Lyding.

She was predeceased by her daughter Jaquita Stiles; her son, David Smith; and her grandson, Timothy.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at 2 p.m. from the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St., Cooperstown, with the Rev. John C. Young officiating.

Mrs. Smith  White will be held in the receiving vault at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home until burial in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery in the spring.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Cooperstown and Milford.

Donald R. Knowles
ONEONTA — Donald R. Knowles, 77, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Aug. 8, 1921, in Oneonta, the son of Stanley G. and Anna Chase Knowles.

He was married to Evelyn Cross on Nov. 25, 1942, in Oneonta.

He worked for The Daily Star for 35 years. He was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church. He had been corporate clerk for the trustees of the church for almost 25 years.

He had many varied interests, including gardening, antiquing, refinishing of antiques, and hooking rugs. He liked to read and loved music.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years of Oneonta; his daughter, Carolyn Knowles of Chatham; his sister, Marion Holmes of Morris; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at 1:30 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta. Officiating will be the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of Main Street Baptist Church. Our friend and chaplain at Fox Hospital, Judy Thistle, will share a few thoughts. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at the Glenwood Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta.

Rosina Kraus
UNADILLA — Rosina Kraus, 46, of Unadilla, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born on Dec. 20, 1952, in Lynn, Mass.

Rosina is survived by her mother, Rosa Kraus of Escondido,  Calif.; one sister and brother-in-law, Theresea and Heil VanCampen of Escondido,  Calif.; one brother, Karl Kraus Jr. of New Jersey; her companion, Craig  Johnson of Franklin; her friends, Lynn and Corrine Spry of Sidney; one niece, four nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins in Canada, Germany and the United States; and her father, Karl Kraus of San Diego,  Calif.

Friends may call Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Graveside services will be held at Ouleout Valley Cemetery in the spring.

The family requests no flowers please.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.
