Theora Merk
ONEONTA — Theora Merk, 79, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Feb. 28, 1919, in Carbondale, Pa., the daughter of John Henry and Sylvia (Decker) Merk.

Theora graduated from Oneonta High School. Theora worked for New Telephone Co.

Survivors include Sylvia Conigliaro of Naples, Fla., and sisters, Lois Whiteman of Oneonta and Doris Cooke of West Hartford, Conn. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Bobbe and Stuart Merk and a sister, Dorothy Scott.

There will be no services at Miss Merk's requests.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Mildred C. Schidzick
HINMAN HOLLOW — Mrs. Mildred "Millie" C. Schidzick, 89, of Hinman Hollow, died late Thursday evening, Jan. 28, 1999, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on Dec. 26, 1909, in Pleasant Valley in the town of Hartwick, a daughter of Daniel and Vera (Rider) Burdick.

She married Frederick Schidzick on Dec. 15, 1930, in Hartwick Seminary. Mr. Schidzick died Sept. 22, 1985.

Millie was raised and attended one-room schoolhouses in Pleasant Valley and Hinman Hollow. Following their marriage, Fritz and Millie moved to Hinman Hollow Road in February of 1931, where they lived and worked their farm together for 54 years. After Fritz's death, Millie continued living there until the present time.

Millie spent most of her life helping out on the farm and working in private homes, caring for elderly people. She also worked for 16 years as a cook at the Hartwick High School cafeteria, retiring in 1971.

An active member of the Hartwick Seminary Evangelical Lutheran Church, Millie was also very involved with the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. Active in grange activities, she was a member of the Hinman Hollow Grange No. 1331 for more than 75 years and was also a member of the Otsego County Pomona Grange. She was involved in her community as a member of the Hartwick Historical Society, the Hartwick Senior Citizens' Group, the Mount Vision Senior Citizens' Group, the Hartwick Rebekah Lodge, South Hartwick Community Club and the former Hinamn Hollow Home Bureau.

Millie enjoyed the warmth of her home in winter and passed the time reading. She also enjoyed sitting on her porch during the summer watching the deer, turkeys and hummingbirds. She was also very fond of cats. Her family will always remember her delicious apple pies and homemade jams, jellies and pickles. This grand lady, who was always willing to lend a helping hand, will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Millie's family wishes to thank the staff and residents of Woodside Hall for making her recent stay there enjoyable.

She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy LaGasse and Robert Renwick of Beaver Meadow Road in Cooperstown, Esther and Charles Hughes of Oneonta and Elaine and Merritt Harvey of Toddsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Carl F. and Dawn Schidzick of Edmeston; 11 grandchildren, Marvin, Teresa, Jimmy, Bette, Christa, Brian, Diane, Cindy, Charlie, Jack and David; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by her stepfather, Robert Weeks; one sister, Martha Burdick, who died in 1916, and two brothers, Clifford Burdick, who died in 1924, and Lyle Burdick, who died in 1979.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at the Hartwick Seminary Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Paul R. Messner, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., when Millie's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Hartwick Seminary Evangelical Lutheran Church, Women of the ELCA, 4636 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Shirley S. Johnson
OTEGO — Mrs. Shirley S. Johnson, 77, of Otego and formerly of West Hampton Beach, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born July 11, 1921, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Francis Andrew Sears and Janet Manson Dunlop.

Her husband Phillip W.  Johnson died March 18, 1974.

Mrs.  Johnson taught first grade for 33 years in the Quogue School District, Quogue, before her retirement. Following her retirement in 1976, she had volunteered at elementary schools and church bazaars to help students as well as the community. She trained several student teachers during her working years in her classroom. A graduate of Pierson High School, Sag Harbor, in 1934, she also attended and graduated from State Teachers College at Brockport in 1943.

Mrs.  Johnson is survived by two nephews and their wives, Thomas G. and Anita Sears of Otego and William S. and Theresa Sears of Otego; two nieces, Carolee S. Byrnes of Otego and Patricia Carter of Westhampton Beach; a sister-in-law, Ramona Brown of Oneonta; great nieces and nephews, Julia Burke and her husband, Kevin, Amanda Byrnes, Megan Byrnes, Covar Sears, Ian Sears and Katherine and Joseph Sears; and one great-great-niece, Elizabeth Burke.

A private family service will be held in the home of Thomas Sears, Otego, at the families convenience.

The Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church of Oneonta, will officiate.

Mrs.  Johnson was cremated and her cremains will be placed in the Oakwood Cemetery, East Quogue, at a later date.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

George Wright Jr.
DOWNSVILLE — George Lee Wright Jr., 72, of Murphy Hill Road, Downsville, died Jan. 28 at Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton.

George was born Jan. 20, 1927, in Baldwin, the son of Emma A.  White.

He was married to Doris Chambers Nov. 23, 1947, in Baldwin. She survives.

He was a retired sales manager for National Gypsum Co. George and his wife have been frequenting the Downsville area since 1960 and moved here permanently upon his retirement in 1982.

George was an active member of the Andes United Methodist Church and president of its trustees. He was a past president of the Six Churches Parish Council and past president of the Tremperskill Rod and Gun Club. Other memberships include the Andes Chamber of Commerce, Delaware County SHARE and senior citizens. While still on Long Island, he was active in Mason's in Freeport.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, George Lee III of Massapequa, L.I., and Thomas of Lake George; daughter, Joy Hadam of Pine Bush; brother, Donald Wright of Sebastian, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by a brother, Leonard, and two sisters, Elizabeth and Shirley.

Funeral services will be Monday, Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. at the Andes United Methodist Church in Andes with the Rev. Michael Love officiating. Burial will be in Paige Cemetery, Downsville.

Friends may call at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home, Main Street, Andes on Sunday where the family will be in attendance from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Memorials to the Andes United Methodist Church in his name would be appreciated.

Charles J. O'Dell
MOUNT UPTON — Charles J. O'Dell, 77, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at home after leading a very fulfilling life.

Charlie was born on Nov. 29, 1921, in his family's home in Mount Upton.

He was a very prosperous dairy farmer for more than 60 years. He was the president of the Godfrey Cemetery Association for several years. Charlie was a former board of directors member of the Rockdale Milk Producers Co-Op. He was always willing to lend a hand or advice to all who asked. He was greatly loved and will be missed by all.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth Cotter O'Dell; one brother and sister-in-law, Carlton and Cathy O'Dell; a sister and brother-in-law, Arleen and David Russ; daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Tom Teehan; granddaughter and her husband, Deana and Jeffrey Dufour; grandson, Dion Teehan and Barb Finch; special friends, Tammy Clark, Millie Baker, Shelly Montgomery and several other great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and special friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at 7 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Daniel Rutenber of Smith Mills officiating. At Charlie's request there will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Godfrey Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Chenango County Hospice.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Thomas W. Hammett
MOUNT UPTON — Thomas W. Hammett, 55, of Mount Upton died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Aug. 4, 1943, in Brooklyn, the son of Thomas and Agnes (McNulty) Hammett.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1960-1963.

He was married to Kathleen J. Yetman, Aug. 29, 1964, in Brooklyn.

Mr. Hammett was a 21-year resident of the town of Unadilla and a former employee of Northrop-Grumman Corp. of Bethpage.

He attended Sacred Heart Church in Sidney and St. Ambrose Church in Unadilla.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen J. Hammett of Mount Upton; a brother-in-law, Robert Yetman of California; a brother-in-law and his wife, Edmund and Diane Yetman of Staten Island; two nephews, Frederick and Douglas Yetman; and a niece, Diana Yetman; also several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by a twin brother, James J. Hammett.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, in St. Ambrose Church, Unadilla, with the Rev. Gordon A. Polenz, pastor, officiating. Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 112 Main St., Unadilla, Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Susan J. Kelly
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. James J. (Susan Josephine) Kelly, 96, of Cooperstown, died Sunday morning, Jan. 31, 1999, at The Meadows.

She was born on Feb. 27, 1902, in County Clare, Ireland, a daughter of John and Delia (Shannon) Doherty. She married Patrolman James Joseph Kelly, of the New York City Police Department, on Sept. 8, 1928, at Sacred Heart Church in the Bronx. Mr. Kelly died on March 26, 1969.

Mrs. Kelly came to the United States from Ireland as a child to live with her maternal aunt, Mrs. Mary Webster, wife of William H. Webster, of Cooperstown. She attended the Cooperstown Union School, completing her education at a business school in New York City. Upon her return to Cooperstown, she served as a clerk in the Otsego County Clerk's Office for several years. Mrs. Kelly returned to New York City and continued to live there following her marriage to Mr. Kelly. After his retirement in the 1960s, they returned to Cooperstown, where she resided until her death.

She was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown and assisted in parish activities during the 1960s. She was a member of the Native Daughters of Cooperstown and the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 Ladies' Auxiliary.

Mrs. Kelly is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Col. James J. and Carol Ann Kelly of Cooperstown and McLean, Va.; one son-in-law, Thomas Kane of California; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was also predeceased by her daughter, Marilyn Regina Kane.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church Parish Center in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating. Burial will be on Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. when Mrs. Kelly's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905-4797.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Bessie D. Kosier
SOUTH KORTRIGHT — Bessie D. Kosier, 78, of South Kortright died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

She was born Feb. 15, 1920, in Grundy Center, Iowa, the daughter of Jake and Mary (Jurgens) Dekker.

She married Joseph Kosier in South Kortright, on Feb. 21, 1941.

Mrs. Kosier worked as a nurse's aide for many years at the South Kortright Rest Home and at the Hearthstone in Hobart for 10 years.

She was a former member of the Church of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus in South Kortright, however, since her residence in Delhi, she had become a communicant of Saint Peter's Church in Delhi.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi; three sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Jean Kosier of East Meredith, Stephen and Kathleen Kosier of Cobleskill and James and MaryAnn Kosier of Woodbourne; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Two sisters also survive her: Mrs. Jane Askew of Portland, Maine and Mrs. Anjie  Johnson of Middletown.

The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at St. Peter's Church, Delhi, with Fr. Joe Manerowski celebrating the Mass. Burial will take place in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford. Calling hours will take place Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m., at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.

Contributions in her memory may be made to either Catskill Area Hospice or Countryside Care Center.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.

Anne V. Somerville
SIDNEY — Anne V. Somerville, 84, of Sidney passed away Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at Skilled Nursing Facility, Sidney.

She was born April 1, 1914, to the late George and Ethel Johnston Coulton in Whitesboro.

Anne married John A. Somerville on Oct. 16, 1937, in Norwich. Jack predeceased her on Sept. 11, 1983.

She was a well-known horsewoman and riding instructor and has trained and shown horses in her life.

Anne was a lifetime member of the American Horse Show Association, as well as a recognized judge. She was a member of the New York State Morgan Horse Association and Horse Council. Anne was a member of the ladies auxiliary of the Sidney Elks Lodge and also the Bainbridge Rod and Gun Club. Anne was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney.

Anne is survived by many friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at 1 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Thomas E.C. Margrave, vicar of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bainbridge, officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service in the funeral home. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Delaware Valley Humane Society in Sidney, the Sidney Emergency Squad or the Sidney Fire Department.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.
