Glenn L. Van Buren
OTEGO — Glenn L. Van Buren, 62, of Otego, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 17, 1999, at his home.

Glenn was born Oct. 20, 1936, in Stamford, the son of Floyd H. and Jean M. ( White) Van Buren.

Glenn married Marion Pierce on June 21, 1985, in Lawrence.

He was a United States Air Force veteran.

Glenn worked for Allied Van Lines in Binghamton for 18 years and D.L. Reed Construction in Sidney for 14 years. He belonged to the Otsego Mountaineer's C.B. Club.

Glenn is survived by his wife of 13 years, Marion Van Buren of Otego; six children, Bob Van Buren of Watertown, Bill Van Buren of Florida, Zina Van Buren of Newfield, Mary Van Buren of Montour Falls, Amber Van Buren of Georgia and Jeffery Van Buren of  Texas; one brother, Arthur Van Buren of Oneonta; stepchildren, Glenn Pierce of Utica, Paul Allen Jr. of Otego, Grace and Jack Perry of Laurens, Mona Kirk, Paul and Melissa of Otego; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandson; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald Pierce of Sidney, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pierce of Binghamton, Lilian Boeck of Oneonta and Mr. and Mrs. Rick Halbert of Sidney.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating. Mr. Van Buren will be placed in the Bookhout private burial vault to await burial in the spring at the Otego Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Mr. Van Buren's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Frederick Webster
ONEONTA — Frederick J.H. Webster Sr., 61, of Oneonta, died on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born on Sept. 9, 1937, in Schenevus, the son of Marshall R.C. and Evelyn (Saxton) Webster Sr.

He married Marie E. VanValkenburgh on Jan. 27, 1979, in Davenport Center.

Fred graduated from Schenevus Central School in 1955. Upon graduation he worked in General Electric's Drafting Department in Schenectady. He later moved to Florida, where he managed a Kress Department Store. In 1961, Fred entered the United States Navy, and was honorably discharged in 1968, as a dental technician.

He was a member of the Schenevus Methodist Church. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed associating with his many friends.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Marie E. Webster of Oneonta; his stepdaughter, Anna M. Boughton of Oneonta; his sons, Frederick J.H. Webster Jr. of Hobart and Douglas R.C. Webster of Stamford; his brother, Marshall R.C. Webster Jr. of Oneonta; and his sisters, Edith A. Goff of Vermont and Alma J. Frazier of Connecticut. He is also survived by his close friends, Dorothy and Roy Roberts of Oneonta.

A military funeral service will be conducted by the Oneonta Disabled Veterans, Chapter 200, on Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home. Burial will be in the spring in the Schenevus Cemetery, Schenevus.

Friends may call Friday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

John C. Worley
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — John C. Worley, a former college professor and an acclaimed composer for classical saxophone, died on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999.

He was born in Waltham, Mass., on Sept. 2, 1919, he had been a resident of Williamsburg, Va., since 1996.

He was a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory and Columbia Teachers College. He studied composition with Sir Lennox Berkeley in England, and conducting with Pierre Monteux in Maine.

Mr. Worley taught at the University of Bridgeport, the State University College at Oneonta, and the University of Maine in Orono. His students were encouraged by his patience, challenged by his standard of excellence, and inspired by his talent and dedication. He organized the Williamsburg Saxophone Quartet in 1996, and was the group's soprano saxophonist.

A composer with numerous published arrangements and compositions to his credit, Mr. Worley was best known for his music for the saxophone. His "Concerto for Saxophone" was recorded in 1998, in Prague.

He is survived by his wife, the former Norma Louise Havener of Rockland, Maine; two daughters, Susan Thacher and her husband, Eric, of Potsdam, N.Y., and Karen Handley and her husband, Brad, of Charlottesville, Va.; a son, Peter Worley and his wife, Susan, of Thousand Oaks,  Calif.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

No service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends remember John Worley in any way that they consider meaningful.

Arrangements are by Bucktrout of Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Va.

Beryl Valvano
ONEONTA — Mrs. Beryl Valvano, 67, of Oneonta, passed away, Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, after an extended battle with lung cancer at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

She was born in London, England, Jan. 1, 1932, the daughter of Frank Lewis and Millicent Nichols.

She was married to the late Thomas Valvano.

After Beryl came over to the United States her first job was with the United States Air Force as a secretary. She graduated from the Fashion Institute in New York City with a degree in jewelry design. In 1996, she retired to Mexico and moved to the Oneonta area in December of 1998.

Beryl is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Brian Prescott; and two grandchildren, Nicole and Devin Prescott of Oneonta.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Jodi Valvano.

A service to celebrate the life of Beryl Valvano will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Andrea  White, chaplain for the Catskill Area Hospice, officiating. Cremation will take place at the Hillington Crematory, Morris.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Beryl's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Ernest M. Gay
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Ernest "Ernie" M. Gay, 73, of Dugan Road, Richfield Springs, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at St. Elizabeths Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Doris; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and her husband, Don Urtz, of Richfield Springs and Karen and her husband, Bill Schorer, of Millers Mills; one son, David Gay of Herkimer; four grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Winifred Dunham; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and several very close friends.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Lloyd; sister, Verna Pickersgill; and one brother-in-law, Richard Dunham.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Richfield Springs Bible Church, 17 Church St., with the Rev. Roger Smith officiating. Calling hours will be held Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered in Ernie's name to the Cedarville Ambulance Corps or the Richfield Springs Bible Church. Donation envelopes are available at the Applegate & Day Funeral Home, Ilion.

Donald E. Conant
ONEONTA — Donald E. Conant died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at the Vestal Nursing Center.

He was born Jan. 26, 1919, in Fine View, Wellesley Island.

In 1946, he married Margaret Sanly of Franklin.

He was the manager of the Franklin Branch of the National Bank of Delaware County, Walton, for 28 years.

He was a member of the Congregational Baptist Church in Franklin, and an active member of the Delaware County Ham Radio Club.

He served in the Middle East during World War II.

Don is survived by his wife, Margaret; his daughters, Jane of Vestal and Nancy C. Wilber of Oneonta; a sister-in-law of Buffalo; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

No service is planned at this time.

Samuel Couch
WORCESTER — Samuel "Sam" Couch, 87, of Worcester, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Bassett HealthCare in Cooperstown.

He was born July 10, 1911, in Huntington, the son of Samuel and Minnie (Winters) Couch.

Sam was employed at the State University College at Oneonta in the Maintenance Department.

He moved from Huntington to Schenevus and then to Worcester, where he has resided for 40 years. Sam will always be remembered for smoking his pipe.

At the request of Sam, he will be cremated and there will be no formal funeral service.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Emerson L. Cole
GARRATTSVILLE — Emerson L. (Sonny) Cole, 65, of Garrattsville, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at the Veterans Hospital in Albany.
He was born Oct. 27, 1933, in Garrattsville, the son of Emerson C. and Bernice A. (Barton) Cole.

He graduated from Morris Central School, Class of 1952.

He was married to Anna C. Livesey on Aug. 2, 1953. He was married to her for 19 years.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952, and completed his specialized Air Training command at the Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. While in the Air Force he served in the Korean conflict and was injured in an airplane crash on the island of Hokkdido, Japan, resulting in a lifelong disability. After release from the active duty, Sonny returned to his hometown to build a home in Welcome Center for his family.

He worked for Raymond Corporation in Morris as a welder and for Austin Thompson Trucking in Mount Vision, as a driver before opening his own trucking business, E.L. Cole Trucking in the 1960s. He also ran a local milk route for farmers shipping canned milk and drove a mail truck for the U.S. Postal Service.

He was a 4-H leader for many years in Otsego County and a member of the United Methodist Church of Garrattsville and the Garrattsville Volunteer Fire Department.

Sonny enjoyed the outdoors and exercising his creative talents. In recent years he spent his days hunting, gardening and building outdoor furniture and other novelty items. His compassion and concern for others kept him busy. He always there to lend a helping hand and was fondly known by his family, friends and neighbors as "the Mayor of Welcome." An all-American boy, Emerson maintained his allegiance to his country and flag through memberships in local chapters and military organizations. He was a member and officer of the American Legion post 1567 of Hartwick and a life member of the V.F.W. post 1417 of Morris and the DAV chapter No. 159.

He is survived by his mother, Bernice Butler of Apopka, Fla.; a son, George (Buster) Cole and his wife, Sun, of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Melody Cole of South New Berlin, Annette L. Guinn and her husband, Timothy, of Norwich and Tammie Collins and her husband, Richard, of New Hartford; his dear sister and confidant, Doris Martin and her husband, Bill, of West Laurens; sisters, Elizabeth William of Apopka, Fla., and Zaida Welden of Richfield Springs; a paternal uncle, Harold Cole and his wife, Alice, of Old Forge; a maternal uncle, Leroy Barton of Salisbury Center; his grandchildren, Michelle and Thomas Cole, Rachel Pigg, Jason Geywits, Hope Berberick, Amy Winton, Tiffany, Tim Jr., Shawna and Jackie Guinn and E. Bryan and Christine Salie; and a great-grandson, Hunter Geywits; many nieces and nephews; and a special niece, Renee Weaver; and his canine companion, Sonya.

He was predeceased by his father, Emerson C. Cole, who died in 1981.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris with the Rev. William Highfield officiating. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from noon till service time on Sunday. Burial and military honors will be in the spring at the Bennett Cemetery in West Laurens.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Garrattsville Methodist Church or the Hartwick American Legion or the Garrattsville Fire Department in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

William Kathmann Sr.
DELHI — William H. "Bill" Kathmann Sr., 90, formerly of Elk Creek, Delhi, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 16, 1999, at his home in Ridge Manor, Fla.
He was born Sept. 24, 1908, in Bomme, county of Fallingbostel, West Germany, one of eight children of Henry W. and Adele (Homann) Kathmann.

When he was 16, he came to the U.S. with his family, and eventually settled on Elk Creek, where Bill lived for 60 years.

He married Gertrude Koenig on Feb. 26, 1938, in Greenville.

For a number of years he was in the trucking business and transported locally grown vegetables and hay, and subsequently owned and operated his own dairy farm. Following his retirement he moved permanently to Ridge Manor, Fla., in 1985, returning to Delhi during the summer months.

The Kathmann family was a founding member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, of which Bill served as president of the congregation. One of his greatest pleasures was the wonder of nature, which he enjoyed during his numerous travels in his trailer throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico, much of which is chronicled in his autobiography "The Life and Adventures of a 1924 German Immigrant," published in hard cover in 1993, by Theophilus Press.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Gertrude Kathmann; a son and daughter-in-law, William Jr. and Marsha Kathmann of Delhi; a daughter and son-in-law, Margo and Harold Burrows of Ridge Manor, Fla.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Erna Richtsfeld and Dora Benjamin, both of Delhi; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call today, at their convenience at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, and the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 20, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, by the pastor, the Rev. John E. Priest, and burial will be later in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, 13753.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Ernest M. Gay
RICHFIELD SPRINGS-ILION — Ernest "Ernie" M. Gay, 73, of Dugan Road, Richfield Springs, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center with his children and pastor by his side.

Ernie was born Nov. 7, 1925, in Millers Mills, son of Earl R. and Mildred C. Archer Gay.

He attended Millers Mills and West Winfield schools.

On May 1, 1948, he was united in marriage to Doris M. Dunham in North Columbia by the Rev. Ridgeway, a blessed union of more than 50 years.

Ernie was employed as a machine setter at Remington Arms Co. and at one time enjoyed farming. He attended Richfield Springs Bible Church and enjoyed restoring old radios and tinkering with old engines.

Survivors include his wife, Doris; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and her husband, Don Urtz, of Richfield Springs and Karen and her husband, Bill Schorer, of Millers Mills; one son, David Gay of Herkimer; four grandchildren, Wendy Urtz, Melissa and Desiree Wentworth and William Schorer; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; three aunts and one uncle; his mother-in-law, Winifred Dunham; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and several very close friends.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Lloyd; sister, Verna Pickersgill; and brother-in-law, Richard Dunham.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at 1 p.m. at Richfield Springs Bible Church, 17 Church St., with the Rev. Roger S. Smith, pastor, officiating. Spring interment in Millers Mills Cemetery will be held at a date and time to be announced.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Applegate & Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered in Ernie's name to the Cedarville Ambulance Corps or Richfield Springs Bible Church. Donation envelopes are available at Applegate & Day Funeral Home, Ilion, and church.
