Frederick J. Tallman Jr.
LONGWOOD, Fla. — Mr. Frederick J. Tallman Jr., 49, of Longwood, Fla. and formerly of Oneonta died suddenly on Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Longwood Hospital, Fla.

He was born June 12, 1949, in Yonkers, to Frederick J. and Catherine A. (Kohrs) Tallman.

Mr. Tallman was married to Elizabeth "Betsy" Bush in Oneonta on Aug. 24, 1985, and moved to Florida in 1986.

He attended schools in Yonkers and Cooperstown. He enlisted in the Army and served in Vietnam. He was a tire technician and loved working with children in area hospitals.

He is survived by his wife, Betsy; his mother, Catherine of Cooperstown; a daughter, Fawn Tallman of Houston; and three sons and a daughter-in-law, Derek Tallman of Houston, Michael Bush of Miami, and Ian and Dora Tallman of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two grandsons, Nathan and Jacob; two sisters, Diane Yerdon of Nicholson, Ga., and Colleen Walrath of Hartwick; two brothers, William of Bucyrus, Ohio, and James of Cooperstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Upstate Home for Children, Pathfinder Village or your loal VFW/Legion Post.

Arrangements are by Woodlawn Carey-Hand Funeral Home, Longwood, Fla.

Marga Albanese
EDMESTON — Marga Albanese, 78, joined those who went before her on Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999. After an extended illness she died at the family residence surrounded by the warmth and love of her family.

She was born Marga Miller on June 27, 1920, in Germany to Hans and Dora Miller. She immigrated to the United States with her parents at the age of 7 and with her family settled in St. Albans, Long Island. She then moved to Island Park with her parents and her sister, Helen. She graduated from Island Park High School.

She married Martin Joseph Albanese in Silver Springs, Md., on Dec. 9, 1938, and settled with him in Island Park. After many years on Long Island, Marga, Martin and their four children moved to upstate New York and settled on the family farm in Edmeston, where the family grew, worked, and loved for 48 years.

Marga was a 4-H leader and a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, West Burlington. She was co-owner of Valley View Antiques of Gilbertsville with her sister, Helen. She was a charter member of the Majors Inn Foundation, Gilbertsville, an excellent crafts person and an avid bird watcher with a love for hummingbirds. She was also a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and friend to members of her family and to all those who came in contact with her.

She leaves behind her beloved sister, Helen Cleinman of Gilbertsville; her loving children, Cece Rowe and her husband, John, Nicholas Albanese and his wife, Cindy, Patricia Rowe and her husband, Jerry, Sandra Petersen and her husband, Don, daughter, Susan Bronson; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at 2 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville, with the Dr. Rev. Donald Boardman officiating. Marga will be laid to rest next to her husband, Martin, at a later date in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Majors Inn Foundation, P.O. Box 242, Gilbertsville, N.Y. 13776.

John Bozanic Jr.
HUNTINGTON BEACH,  Calif. — John Bozanic Jr., 66, the son of the late John Bozanic and Martha Durkota, passed away of colon cancer on Jan. 8, 1999, in Huntington Beach,  Calif.

John, a retired engineer, was born in Worcester, N.Y., on May 5, 1932, and graduated from Worcester Central School in 1949. After serving four years in the Air Force, John attended the University of Miami. Upon graduating in 1958, with a degree in electrical engineering, John took a job with North American Aviation in Southern California. He remained in California and continued to work in the field up until his retirement just a year ago.

A founder of the University of Miami Alumni Association of Southern California, John served as its first president, and remained an active member. Besides being dedicated to his family and the University of Miami, John served on many community boards, including HUD, Huntington Beach Parks and Recreation, Boy Scouts, California Coastal Commission, Community Services Commission, Ocean View and Huntington Beach Union High School.

John is survived by his wife of 44 years, Maxine; two sons, Jeffrey and his wife, Rebecca, and Scott and his wife, Terry; two daughters, Debra Schecter and Lisa Bozanic; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Larry of Westland, Mich., George of Lumberton, Miss., and Donald of Hedgesville, W.Va.; seven sisters, Helen Teller of Worcester, N.Y., Anne Jorgensen of Zephyrhills, Fla., Zita Wenzel of Tavares, Fla., Vera Peters of Springfield, Va., Emily Lilly of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Jeanette Boxill of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Mary Bozanic of Santa Monica,  Calif.; and 37 nieces and nephews.

A "celebration of his life" was held on Jan. 11, 1999, at the National Sports Grill in Santa Ana,  Calif., where more than 150 friends and relatives, nearly all wearing University of Miami garb, gathered to share their memories of John.

In recognition of his love and dedication to the University of Miami, the Alumni Association has established a scholarship fund in his name. Stanley Gergich
GLOVERSVILLE — Stanley Gergich, 63, of Gloversville, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 26, 1935, in East Worcester, the son of Anton and Angela (Kenik) Gergich Jr.

He served in the United States Army with the 526th Engineers Battalion stationed in Korea from 1957 to 1959. He was recalled from 1960 to 1961, as the result of the Cuban crisis.

Stanley grew up in Worcester, graduated from Worcester Central, Class of 1956. He was a Gloversville resident for the past 30 years.

He was employed for more than 26 years by Baronet Litho in Gloversville, and since 1994, was a pressman's helper at the Leader Harold newspaper in Gloversville.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Worcester.

Stanley is survived by two sons, Timothy Gergich of Worcester and James Gergich of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Tammy Seagren of Schenevus and Pamela Gergich of Schenevus; nine grandchildren; one brother, Anthony Gergich of Leonia, N.J.; two sisters, Mary  Taylor of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Josephine Gutierrez of Iselin, N.J.; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Stanley was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Anna Rose.

A funeral Liturgy service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at the E.J. Skinner Funeral Chapel, Worcester, with the Rev. Edward J. Ryan, retired, of Stamford, officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph's Cemetery, Worcester, at a later date.

Calling hours will be Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Friday, Feb. 26, from noon to service time at 1 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Contributions may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220-3049.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Louis E. Doring
TREADWELL — Louis E. Doring, 70, of Case Hill Road, died Saturday morning, Feb. 20, 1999, at his home after a strong battle with cancer.

He was born Sept. 29, 1928, at Parshall Hospital in Oneonta, the son of the late Frank and Minnie (Tuller) Doring.

Louis lived in Treadwell his whole life and graduated from A.L. Kellog High School.

He owned and operated the family farm and was an inspector of export lumber for the Department of Agriculture. Louis was a former member of the Oneonta Moose Club, and served on the Treadwell Fire Department and two years on the Franklin Planning Board.

Louis is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Jeff Taggart of Sidney Center; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Judy Doring of Treadwell; eight grandchildren, Jeannine George, Brian, Leanne and Brad Taggart, and Tiffany, Troy, Tara and Trever Doring; two great-grandchildren, Kailee Pantala Taggart and Emily George; one godchild, Star Banner; a sister, Effie Wheeler of Sidney; and a very loving companion of 22 years, Jan Ackley of Treadwell; and several nieces and cousins.

Respecting Louis' personal wishes there will be no funeral service.

Jan Ackley and the Doring family will receive friends at Louis home on the corner of Case Hill and  Jackson Hill Road in Treadwell, Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, from 1 p.m. till 4 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy in Louis memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Ida R. Richards
EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mrs. Ida R. Richards, 66, passed away Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born May 27, 1932, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Burrell and Phyllis (Gray) Root.

On April 26, 1987, she married Arnold Richards in Binghamton. He survives.

Mrs. Richards had worked for the Otsego County Department of Social Services, Cooperstown. She was a member of the Woman's Legion Auxiliary, Red Cross Chairperson, CSEA Treasurer, and the secretary of Springfield Alumni.

Mrs. Richards is survived by her husband, Arnold L. Richards of East Springfield; a sister, Hannah Cary of Schuyler Lake; and her mother, Phyllis Ostrander of the Meadows.

She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Root; and a sister, Freida Charnin.

Contributions in Mrs. Richards memory may be made to the Red Cross, or American Cancer Society.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at the Presbyterian Church, East Springfield, with Mr. Lyman  Johnson officiating. Burial will take place in the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center, at a later date.

There will be no public calling hours.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Edith D. Hymers
LAFAYETTE, N.J. — Edith D. Hymers, 83, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at Countryside Care Center at Delhi, N.Y.

She was born in Clarksburg, W.Va. on Aug. 27, 1915, the daughter of Grover and Ruth Davisson Douglas.

She was married to Lewis M. Hymers on April 25, 1936, in Delhi, N.Y. They were married 51 years, until his death on Dec. 25, 1987. They owned a beautiful farm in Agusta, N.J., and later moved to Lafayette, N.J.

Mrs. Hymers is survived by a sister, Dorothy J. Tompkins of Delhi, N.Y.; a brother, Robert D. Douglas of Chula Vista,  Calif.; a sister-in-law, Betty Douglas of California; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial graveside service will be held in the spring at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, N.Y.

Contributions in Edith's memory may be made to Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi, N.Y.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi, N.Y.

Helen Beck Ruby
ROME — Helen Beck Ruby, 90, a former nurse and nurse educator, died Tuesday, February 23, 1999, in Rome Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Ruby, daughter of Emil Beck of Denmark and Maud Beck of the Danish Virgin Islands, was born in Culdesac, Idaho. She graduated from Hartwick Seminary near Cooperstown, and Crouse Irving School of Nursing and Syracuse University at Syracuse, N.Y. She married George J. Ruby in 1936.

Mrs. Ruby's career as a registered professional nurse began with private duty and hospital nursing assignments in Syracuse and Utica. She was on the staff of Rome Hospital in obstetrics. At the Griffiss Air Force Base she organized the obstetrical ward and the outpatient clinic, and supervised both for years. Her nursing then moved to the Rome School System as a school nurse-teacher at Parmalee, Joy and Stokes schools. Helen Ruby's expertise in her nursing career was well-known and rewarded with service awards. Professional associations included the Crouse Irving Nurse Alumni Association and life membership in the New York State Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by a daughter, Johanna Reig of Rome and D.C. Metro; two sons, James and Thomas of Rome, and their families; a sister, Elsie Dain of Oswego; grandchildren, Melinda and Ken Kimball and Michael Ruby of the Boston area, Andrew Ruby of Albany, Bryan Ruby of Tupper Lake, Derrick Reig of  Washington D.C. Metro and Erin and Meghan Ruby of Rome; in addition, she has 12 nieces and nephews and their families living throughout the United States.

The funeral is being handled by Strong and Burns. Calling hours are Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Strong and Burns (Rome).

Services will be held in the Hartwick Seminary Lutheran Church with burial in the Beck Family plot at Hartwick Seminary Cemetery outside Cooperstown in the spring.

The family would like to express its heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Sam Leather and the staff at Rome Memorial Hospital for the kindness and compassion extended to their mother and grandmother during her illness.

Doris M. Hastings
MIDDLEFIELD — Doris M. Hastings, 93, of Middlefield, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at her home.

She was born on June 15, 1905, in Fulton, the daughter of Irving D. Moore and Elizabeth Slaver Moore. She spent some of her early years in Vermont and attended high school in North Adams, Mass.

She married John J. Walker on July 16, 1924, in Barre, Vt. He died in 1952. She later married Arthur W. Hansen in Fulton in October 1963. They made their home in Bolton Landing. He died in 1976. On Dec. 28, 1988, she married George Hastings of Corinth, Vt. He died in 1994.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne Walker  Johnson and Rodney E.  Johnson of Middlefield; and grandchildren, Karen  Johnson Rury and Edward Rury of Cherry Valley, Kittie Johnson, Mark and Gina  Johnson and Seth and Doreen Johnson, all of Middlefield. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Sarah, Jessica and Jonathan Rury, Jessica, Scott and Weston  Johnson and Matthew, Benjamin and Samuel Johnson; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Howard and Ray Moore; and a grandson, Kevin Johnson.

In keeping with her wishes, Mrs. Hastings' cremation took place directly following death.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, 1999. At this service there will be an opportunity for those who wish to share their remembrances. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to do so may make a memorial gift to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Carrie B. Jacobi
ONEONTA — Carrie B. Jacobi, 89, of Oneonta, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at Albany Medical Center, Albany.

She was born Sept. 3, 1909, in Brooklyn. The daughter of Martin and Katherine (Nason) Baumann.

Carrie was a graduate of Pleasantville High School and Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa.

She married John E. Jacobi on Dec. 29, 1933, in  White Plains. John died on June 11, 1991.

Carrie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Oneonta Chapter of AAUW and the Fox Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John E. and Ruth Jacobi Jr. of Clarkesville, Ga.; and a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Kenneth Sherman of Oneonta; six grandchildren, John III, Craig and James Jacobi, Scott and Craig Sherman and Susan Sherman McCosco; seven great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Carrie was predeceased by a brother, Martin N. Baumann.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Marie E. King, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Oneonta, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be in the spring at the West Oneonta Cemetery, West Oneonta.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Carrie B. Jacobi.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
