Bessie B. Armondi
ONEONTA — Bessie B. Armondi, 102, of Oneonta, formerly of Sidney passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Facility, Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 9, 1896, to the late Leslie E. and Malvina Richmond Bogart in Sidney.

Bessie was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 255, Sidney, American Legion Auxiliary, Sidney and Unversity Club, Sidney.

She was an elementary school teacher in Sidney.

Bessie is survived by two nieces, Jane and Albert Symonds of Oneonta and Betty Arliss of Flushing; and several nieces and nephews.

Bessie was predeceased by her husband, Charles W. Armondi, on Aug. 16, 1957; also two sisters, Elizabeth Westcott and Grace Kinner.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Ward Letteney of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney officiating.

Friends may call at their convenience Wednesday prior to the service.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Gladys M. Barnes
UNADILLA — Gladys M. Barnes 80, of Unadilla passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Sept. 8, 1918, to the late Alexander M. and Edna E. Dibble Thompson in Delhi.

Gladys married Levi W. Barnes on June 24, 1939, in Franklin. He predeceased her on April 7, 1952.

She was a homemaker and helped run the family farm. Gladys was a member of the Sidney Center Methodist Church.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Marie and Leslie Rifanburg of Sidney and Mary Barnes and her fiancee, Ken Miller, of Unadilla; four grandchildren, Lisa Dann, Michelle Stewart, Melinda Livingston and Robert Harder; four great-grandchildren, Carly Livingston, Andrew Stewart, Jilleen Livingston and Jeffrey Stewart.

She is also predeceased by a brother, Glenn Thompson.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Stephen L. Reese of the Columbus Community Church in New Berlin officiating.

Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Ouleout Valley Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Center Emergency Squad or the Columbus Community Church, New Berlin.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Vincent J. Costanza
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Vincent J. Costanza, 69, of  Taylor Road in the town of Exeter, died early Saturday morning, Feb. 27, 1999, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on May 30, 1929, in Albany, a son of Joseph and Rose (LaPonte) Costanza. He married Shirley Bristol on Dec. 1, 1988, in Amsterdam.

Vince was raised in Albany and later moved to Schenectady as a teen-ager. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the armed forces and served during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge he returned to Rotterdam, where he began his career as a carpenter. He spent many years working in the Schenectady area doing fine carpentry work, moving to the Richfield Springs area in 1991.

He was a devoted member of Cooperstown Assembly of God and enjoyed fishing, especially at trout streams in Vermont.

Vince is survived by his wife of 10 years, Shirley of Richfield Springs; his first wife, Patricia Duci of Schenectady; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Gary and Patricia Costanza of Rotterdam, Jeff and Christine Costanza of Richfield Springs, Connie Costanza of Oneonta and Brian Costanza of Schenectady; eight grandchildren; and many cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at the Cooperstown Assembly of God, with the Rev. Ameen Aswad, pastor, officiating.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Cooperstown Assembly of God, P.O. Box 550, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326-0550.

Seager Fairbairn
ARKVILLE — Seager Fairbairn, 85, of Dry Brook Road, Arkville died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

He was born Jan. 23, 1914, in Seager, Ulster County, the son of Miller Fairbairn and Elizabeth Haynes.

He married Marguerite Rosa on Jan. 20, 1941, in Arkville.

Seager was a well-respected carpenter and cabinet maker. He built several homes in the area. He spent several years as superintendent of construction on the Armand Erpf estate in Dry Brook. He suprervised the construction of the maze as well as the roads, several buildings and the covered bridge on the estate. Upon retiring he set up his own woodworking shop adjacent to his home. Seager also worked on the restoration of the Dimmick house in Arkville, also known as the Erpf house in the memory of the philanthropist. He served as building inspector of the town of Middletown for several years. He was a member of the Margaretville Masonic Lodge, since Jan. 20, 1944. He graduated from the State University College of Technology at Delhi.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Fairbairn of Arkville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Gertrude Rosa and Frances Fairbairn, and three brothers, Hiram, Miller and John Fairbairn.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at 2 p.m., at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Dr. George Carpenter officiating.

Committal services in the spring will be at the Margaretville Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance. Margaretville Masonic Lodge will conduct services at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Contributions may be made in memory of Seager Fairbairn to the Ambulance Fund of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville, N.Y. 12455.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Mildred H. Lewis
SIDNEY — Mildred H. Lewis, 82, of Sidney and formerly of Unadilla, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, in the Nursing Care Facility of The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born May 22, 1916, in Unadilla, the daughter of Harry and Etta (Jones) Gardner.

She was married to Herbert C. Lewis, Sept. 3, 1936, in Cortland. Mr. Lewis died Oct. 27, 1978.

Before entering the Nursing Care Facility of The Hospital, Sidney in 1992, she had been a lifelong resident of Unadilla. She enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting, knitting, cooking and baking, with also a fond love of flowers and the many family picnics. She was a member of the American Agriculturist.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Herbert Jr. and Donna Lewis of Oneonta and John D. Lewis of Vestal; two sisters, Bernice DePan of Derby and Adira Moench of California; five grandchildren; Ann Marie, Donald Herbert, Arthur Harold, Daniel John and David John; four great-grandchildren, Sabrina Ann, David, Travis and Sean.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with the Rev. Donna Joy Schmid, pastor of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Tuesday, March 2, at their convenience. The family will be in attendance Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Mildred Glenda Nestved
EDMESTON — Mildred Glenda Nestved, 59, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin.

She was born June 15, 1939, in Columbus, the daughter of William and Flora Elizabeth (Davis) Lake. She married John Nestved on Jan. 9, 1960.

Glenda was employed as a nurse's aide at Chase Nursing Home for many years, until her health forced her to retire. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston, and a past member of the South New Berlin Emergency Squad.

She is survived by her children, Carol Ann Nestved, Jean Marie West, Mark John Nestved and Richard James Browning; five grandchildren; her brothers and sisters, Seymour Bourne, Marian Mumbulo, Brownell Lake and Viola Clarke.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Bob Bourne, Charlie Bourne and Ernie Bourne, and sisters, Ruth Effner and Frances Harrington.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at noon at the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston, with the Rev. John Buskey officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Glenda's memory to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Joan Marie Rhodes
ONEONTA — Joan Marie Rhodes, 68, of Oneonta died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at her residence.

She was born May 14, 1930, in the Bronx, the daughter of James T. and Mary (Brock) Byrne Sr.

She married James J. Rhodes Sr. on Feb. 22, 1958. He died Feb. 28, 1967.

For more than 20 years, Joan was employed at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City. She retired in 1987.

Joan moved to this area from New York City four years ago. While living here she was a member of St. Mary's Church.

She is survived by her children, James J. and Deirdre Rhodes Jr. of Naples, Fla., Laurie Rhodes of the Bronx, and Mariellen and John Schuck of Oneonta; two sisters, Catherine Casey of Maplewood, N.J. and Tibby McArdle of Brooklyn; her grandchildren, Jennifer and Nicole Schuck, James John III, Brittany Diana, and Siobhan Rhodes. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A sister, Lucy Duffy of Tuckahoe, predeceased her.

A Mass of Christian Bural will be offered on Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Long Island National Cemetery, Pinelawn.

Friends may call this evening at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Vincenza (Fusco) Santoro
UTICA — Mrs. Vincenza (Fusco) Santoro, 87, of Utica passed away on Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital Center after a brief illness.

Mrs. Santoro is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Michael Parrella of Oneonta; a son and daughter-in-law, Vincent "Jim" and Carolyn Santoro of Utica; 14 grandchildren, Benny Parrella and his friend, Kelly Osborne, Michael and Ann Marie Parrella, and Judith and David Hurlburt, all of Oneonta, Anita and Joe Esper of Utica, Annette Santoro of  Pennsylvania, Debbie Santoro of Utica, Celest and Bill Boris of North Carolina, Teresa Jimerson of Liverpool, Christine and Tom Bolanowski of New Hartford, Vincent Jr. and Catherine Santoro of Utica, Richard and Michelle Santoro of Florida, Gina Guzman, Paula Williams and her friend, David Gonzalez, and Carrie Santoro, all of Utica; and 18 great-grandchildren. Her survivors also include several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins, all of Italy; and her in-laws, Vincenzo and Giacenta Santoro, also of Italy.

She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Santoro; a daughter-in-law, Jeannete Santoro; and a sister, Maria Civita Sardelli.

Visitation will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Eannace Funeral Home Inc, 932 South St., corner of Hammond Avenue, Utica. Mrs. Santoro's funeral will commence on Tuesday morning at 10:15 from the funeral home and at 11 a.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Utica, where her Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated. Entombment will take place in her private mausoleum in St. Agnes Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Alice J. Waring
DELHI — Alice J. Waring, 79, of Delhi died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at the Piney Mountain Nursing Home in Fayetteville, Pa.

Mrs. Waring was born on Jan. 12, 1920, in Fly Creek, and was a longtime resident of Delhi. She was the daughter of Harvey and Florence Seeger Jack.

Alice married Rexford N. Waring in 1941, and he died in 1990.

She worked in the Delhi Diner, Delaware Academy cafeteria and at the College Golf Course before retiring in 1987.

Mrs. Waring is survived by a daughter, Judy Serowik of  Johnson City; sons, Lynn of Mebane, N.C. and Russell of Saratoga Springs; four grandchildren, Preston, Carrie, Scot and Shane; and two great-grandchildren, Sequoya and Kate.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi. The service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Main St., Delhi, with the Rev. Paul Hartt, officiating Spring burial will be at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Jane C. Sherman
WEST EDMESTON — Jane C. Sherman, 71, of West Edmeston, passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, in Statesville, N.C.

She was born June 15, 1927, to James and Isabelle (Neff) Carson in Deposit.

Jane graduated form Deposit Central School in June of 1944. She married Alvin Lee Sherman on March 22, 1947, in Deposit. He predeceased her on July 15, 1987.

She was a faithful and devoted member of the First Baptist Church of West Edmeston, serving as its treasurer for many years. Her love of children was greatly shown as she was a director and teacher of the Sunday School Department, Junior Church and Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the Wharton Valley American Legion Auxiliary and the Bridgewater Senior Citizens Club.

Jane was a former employee of Gates-Cole Insurance and retired from Sherman's Tax Service as former owner.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary Andrea Sherman of West Edmeston,; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patrick and Nancy Comings of Troutman, N.C., and Wayne and Terri Hillis of Cooperstown; one sister, Thorine DeVoe of Windsor; three brothers, Keith Carson of Florida, Jerry Carson of Binghamton and Robert Carson of Wappinger Falls; seven grandchildren, Lisa, Paul, Joe, Maureen, Charlene, Michael and Kelly; 8 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews who thought of her as a second mom.

Jane was predeceased by her brother, Ernest Carson, and two sisters, Jean Vanpelt and Joan Lucas.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 4, 1999, at the First Baptist Church of West Edmeston at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Don Buck officiating.

Friends may call Wednesday, March 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of West Edmeston Sunday School Department.

Mom, we will miss you very much but our hearts are full of joy knowing you are now reunited with daddy in heaven.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.
