Evelyn Marie Conrow
SIDNEY — Evelyn Marie Hamel Conrow, 78, of Sidney, died peacefully Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Wilson Hospital,  Johnson City, after a brief illness.

She was born May 17, 1920, to the late Hermas and Mary Mable Hamel in Binghamton.

Evelyn married Clyde Conrow on April 27, 1947, in Binghamton.

She was a clerk at the Sidney Public Library for many years and retired from E.C.D. of Bendix after 17 years as a tool room clerk. Evelyn was a charter member of the American Topical Association having joined when it was formed in 1949. She won many popularity awards for her horses on stamps. Evelyn joined the Sidney Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was also a member of the Sidney Moose Club No. 277, Sidney.

She is survived by her husband of almost 52 years, Clyde Conrow of Sidney; and three daughters, Carole Beach and her husband, Gary, of Sidney, Diane Frappier and her husband, Jerry, of Afton and Judy Bernhardt and her husband, Herman, of Unadilla. Evelyn had eight grandchildren, Teresa Rice of Bainbridge, Ginger Wagner and her husband, Eric, of Cicero, Mark Brewer of Bainbridge, Christina Cooke of Afton, Kimberly Beckmann and her husband, Douglas, of Unadilla, Matthew Cooke of Camp Pendlton,  Calif., Angela Bassano and her husband, Matthew, of West Hartford, Conn., and Amy Oliver and her husband, Bob, of Unadilla. In addition she had three great-grandchildren; two nephews and several cousins.

Evelyn was predeceased by a brother, Ambrose, and two sisters, Edna Nelson and Pauline Monroe.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 4, 1999, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. David Masland, of the United Methodist Church of Sidney, officiating.

Friends may call Wednesday, March 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney or Afton Emergency Squads.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Virginia Weiland
ENDICOTT — Virginia "Grams" Weiland, 81, of Ideal Senior Living Center, Endicott, and formerly of Otego, passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at the Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center.

She was one of the original family members for whom Colliersville was named.

She was a member of the Emmons United Methodist Church and attended the Central United Methodist Church of Endicott. She was a retired employee of the Bendix Corp. in Sidney, with 30 years of service and was a collector for the Sidney Federal Credit Union. She was a longtime member of the Machinists' Union Local 1529 and was an honorary member of the Spirit of '76 Junior Ancient Fife and Drum Corp. of Endicott.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and David G. McGregor; grandchildren, Ms. Brenda (Brockway) Papa, Mr. and Mrs. Bradley and Julie Brockway and Kimberly Brockway, all of Endicott; four great-grandchildren, Jessica and Daniel Papa, Kimberlie Brockway and Stephanie Rohmann; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Terry Collier of Haverhill, Mass., and Dr. Richard and Pauline Collier of Fort Myers, Fla.; and several special nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Jacob L. Collier and Pearl (Chase) Collier; and several brothers and sisters.

Funeral and interment services will be held Thursday, March 4, 1999, at 1 p.m. from the Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home Inc. 300 East Main St., Endicott. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, in the spring. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Roberta Scouten
EUDORA, Kan. — Roberta Evelyn Scouten, 63, of Eudora, Kan., died Saturday morning, Feb. 27, 1999, at her home in Eudora.

She was born Nov. 16, 1935, in Little Falls, N.Y., the daughter of Robert Paul and Pauline Decker Ganzmann. She spent most of her life in the upstate New York area, moving to Eudora in 1996.

She was married to Charles Scouten on Sept. 6, 1952, in Little Falls. He survives at home.

Mrs. Scouten was a registered nurse and had worked as a nurse throughout her life, also holding positions as a ceramics instructor and as truck driver with her husband.

She attended First Southern Baptist Church in Eudora.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Scouten; a daughter, Susan Coulter of Eudora; a son, Edward Scouten of Ilion, N.Y.; two brothers, Bernard Ganzmann and Robert Ganzmann, both of Ilion; a sister, Gail Dyn of Richfield Springs, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at the First Southern Baptist Church in Eudora, Kan.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Douglas County and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, Kan. 66044.

Mrs. Scouten will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday at the mortuary.

Sylvia L. Springer
HERKIMER — Sylvia L. Springer, 87, of 104 North  Washington St., formerly of 39 Church St., Richfield Springs, died on Monday, March 1, 1999, in Folts Home.

She was born on July 9, 1911, in Ipwich, N.H., a daughter of the late August and Alina Maria Lilius Iver.

After graduating high school she became a professional artist. She pursued her special talent and interest at the Worcester Art School, Worcester, Mass., and the Grand Central School of Art in New York City.

On May 29, 1939, she married Franklyn Springer in the Presbyterian Church, Richfield Springs.

Mrs. Springer had her own art studio in Richfield Springs and belonged to many artist organizations, both here and in Florida. She taught art with the Art Association to SUNY classes in Cooperstown. She retired in 1995.

For many years while living in Richfield Springs she was active in civic and church activities. She was an elder in the Church of Christ Uniting and later became a member of the Leesburg United Methodist Church, Leesburg, Fla.

Surviving besides her husband of 59 years, Franklyn; are a son, David J. Springer of Richfield Springs; one grandson, David J. Springer Jr.; and several nieces and nephews, among them a special niece, Pat Carlson of Finland.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Lilius, and two sisters, Lillian Mikkol and Effie Carlson.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, March 5, 1999, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs. Funeral service will be on Saturday, March 6, at 11 a.m. in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Wilde, pastor, officiating.

The committal service will take place later this spring in Highland Rural Cemetery, Jordanville.

Memorial donations may be made to the Church of Christ Uniting. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

William W. Schimkat
MARYLAND — William W. Schimkat, 87, of Maryland, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at his residence.

He was born April 25, 1911, in Wood Haven, the son of Caeser and Edyth (Boerum) Schimkat.

He married Charlotte Harragan in 1943, in New London, Conn.

William served in the United States Coast Guard as a machinist's mate from 1941-1945.

In 1953, he moved from Long Island to Cobleskill, where he lived until 1956, when he moved to Maryland.

William worked at Bendix in Sidney as a molder.

William was a member of the Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge No. 592, the Kalurah Temple, Binghamton, the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Oneonta, the Council Chapter Consistory in the Valley of Binghamton and he was a life member of Lodge 1529, International Association of Machinist's and Aerospace Workers.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Schimkat of Maryland; a nephew, Ron and his wife, Betty Schimkat, of Palm Harbor, Fla.; a niece, Maureen Standish of Kinston, Mass.; and many other nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Elmer, and a sister, Muriel.

A graveside service will be held later in the spring at the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of William to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 272, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Barbie L. Iozzi
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Barbie L. Iozzi, 51, a resident of Stone Mountain, Ga., died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at De Kalb Medical Center in Decatur, Ga.

After owning and operating several successful restaurants with her husband, she moved to Harlingen,  Texas, where at the age of 40 she enrolled in college at the  Texas State Technical Institute of Technology. She graduated with a 4.0 grade point average, which earned her an associate's degree of applied science.

Following graduation she began employment at VOTECH of Weslaco,  Texas, as a computer science teacher. To further her career, she moved to Georgia, where she was employed by Inacom Information Systems as a systems engineer. During her time at Inacom, Barbie received several certificates in Lotus Notes Programming of which she was especially proud.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur Iozzi; two daughters, Nichole Rutherford of Hamden, N.Y., and Michele Iozzi of Garland,  Texas; and her mother, Bethena Barrows of Hancock, N.Y. Also surviving are two brothers, Ray Barrows of Jacksonville, N.C., and Ross Barrows of Oxford, Ga.; two sisters, Laura Barrows of Oxon Hills, Md., and Janice Dacey of Walton, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel in Hancock, N.Y., on Thursday, March 4, 1999, from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 5, at 1 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

James N. Quatrino
EAST HERKIMER — Mr. James N. Quatrino, 49, a resident of East Herkimer, and a native of Little Falls, passed away on Tuesday morning, March 2, 1999.

He was born on July 22, 1949, in Little Falls, son of Joseph and Frances (Grassi) Quatrino.

He attended Little Falls schools, and was a graduate of the Little Falls High School, Class of 1968. Jim later went on to attend Herkimer County Community College, where he obtained a degree in business administration in 1991.

He joined in marriage with Kathleen F. Skubitz on June 14, 1986, in St. John's Episcopal Church in Richfield Springs.

Jim began service with the United States Army National Guard on June 26, 1970. He was a member of the Holy Family Parish in Little Falls. He currently was working with Gilford Mills in East Herkimer as a shipping supervisor.

Jim was a wonderful husband and father and devoted his life to his entire family. He loved to fish and play bocce.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen (Kate); his mother, Frances of Little Falls; his son, Jason Quatrino of Oriskany Falls; mother-in-law, Irene Skubitz, along with her friend, Don Osborn, of Richfield Springs; his sisters, Barbara Leclercq of New Hampshire and Marlene Quatrino of Little Falls; his sister-in-law, Patricia Davis, along with her husband, Vern, of Richfield Springs; nieces and nephews including, Darrin and Erica Leclercq, Brian and Stacey Snyder and Stephanie Davis; his great-nephew, Daniel Santomas; and his cherished dog and cat,  Taylor and Tess. He also leaves several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph, on Nov. 12, 1998, his infant brother, James, and his father-in-law, Frank Skubitz.

Family and friends are invited to attend visitation at the Enea Funeral Home on Thursday, March 4, from 5 to 9 p.m.

The funeral will commence on Friday, March 5, 1999, at 10:15 a.m. from the Enea Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe St., Little Falls, and at 11 a.m. from the Holy Family Parish Chapel, corner of Albany and William Streets, Little Falls, with the Rev. Charles R. Celeste, pastor, celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Procession will follow to St. Mary's Cemetery, town of Herkimer, where interment will take place.

Ruth E. Porn
PRATTSVILLE — Ruth E. Porn, 76, formerly of Grand Gorge Road, Prattsville, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at Liberty Hall Nursing Home, Colchester, Conn.

She was born July 11, 1922, in West Settlement, the daughter of Ralph and Elizabeth VanHoesen.

She married Harold Porn on Sept. 24, 1946, at Susquehanna, Pa. Harold died July 23, 1988.

Ruth was a lifelong Prattsville area resident. She and her husband spent many summers at Nickersen's Park at Gilboa.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Daryl Porn of Lebanon, Conn., and Gary and Beth Porn of Cobleskill; sisters, Marquerite Tompkins and Doris Frechette; nine grandchildren, Daniel, Beth Ann, Andrew, Gary Michael, Jeff, Scott, Christopher, Trista, and Mirisa; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 6, 1999, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 West Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Carl Orlando, of Harpersfield, officiating. Burial will take place at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Prattsville later in the spring.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon on Saturday until service time at 2 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Ruth's memory to the Mohawk Valley Chapter, Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association, care of UPC-MGT, 1213 Court St., Utica, N.Y. 13502.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

John F. Tabor
CHINO,  Calif. — John F. Tabor, 52, of Chino,  Calif., and formerly of El Paso,  Texas, and Cooperstown, N.Y., died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at Chino Valley Medical Center.

He was born on Nov. 28, 1946, in Cooperstown, a son of Manley F. (Frank) and Anne (Colquhoun) Tabor.

John was raised and educated in Cooperstown. In 1966, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. Following his discharge from the Navy, he lived in various places throughout the United States.

He is survived by three sisters and one brother-in-law, Eudora Tabor of Scotland, Catherine Tabor of Cobleskill, N.Y., and Margaret and Dale Hungerford of Milford, N.Y.; one brother and sister-in-law, David A. and Patti Tabor of Cooperstown; and several nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his father, Frank Tabor, who died July 21, 1988; his mother, Anne C. Tabor, who died Jan. 7, 1997; and one brother, Donald Scott Tabor, who died Jan. 1, 1971.

At the request of the family services will be private.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Gregory VanLeuven
FIELDALE, Va. — Gregory C. VanLeuven, 41, of Fieldale, Va., and formerly of Cooperstown, died unexpectedly, Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at his home.

Greg was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Dec. 7, 1957, a son of Clyde B. and Doris M. (Raycroft) VanLeuven.

He is survived by his wife, Melissa VanLeuven of Springfield Center, N.Y.; his mother, Doris DeNike of Fieldale; one daughter, Jade Bachmann of Poughkeepsie; three sons, Gregory C. VanLeuven Jr. and Jason B. VanLeuven, both of Poughkeepsie, and Richard E. VanLeuven of Springfield Center, N.Y.; four sisters, Linda M. Kelleher of Middletown, N.Y., and Julie Ann Lee, Darlene R. DeNike and Cheryl L. DeNike, all of Poughkeepsie; two brothers, Chris L. DeNike Sr. of Fieldale and Richard E. Kelleher of Chicago, Ill.; and five nieces and 11 nephews.

Private burial services will take place at the convenience of the family in Poughkeepsie.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
