William V. Owen
BAINBRIDGE — William (Bill) V. Owen of Bainbridge died Thursday, March 4, after a long illness.

Mr. Owen was a self-employed cattle and antique dealer.

He is survived by his lifelong companion, Laura Halpin of Bainbridge; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Roberta Owens of Mallory; a stepson, Faye and Carol Halpin of Dunsville, Va.; three granddaughters, Tresia (Dan) Easterly of Napanoch, Patricia (Dan) Giovinnini of Virgil and Susan (John) Kimball of Central Square; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Iva Baker of Afton; and several nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 7, from 3-5 p.m. at the Dorothy Memorial Home, 121 Main St., Afton.

The funeral will be held on Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Dorothy Memorial Home with the Rev. Ed Martin, of the Calvary United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge. Memorial gifts may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Grace B. Nevins
GILBOA — Grace B. Nevins, 74, of Flat Creek Road, Gilboa died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at Albany Medical Center in Albany.

Grace was born Dec. 23, 1924, at Hastings on the Hudson, the daughter of Frank and Grace (Henwood) Tuthill. She was married to Edward A. Nevins on March 17, 1956, in Yonkers.

Grace moved to Gilboa in January of 1978, from Milford, Conn. She was a member of the Susquehanna Post American Legion Auxiliary in Conesville, the Stamford-Harpersfield Senior Citizens, member and past president of the Broome Center Baptist Senior Citizens, and former member and past president of the Grand Gorge Senior Citizens.

She is survived by her husband, Edward Nevins of Gilboa; a daughter, Linda Hallam of Stratford, Conn.; a son, Edward Nevins Jr. of Hamden, Conn.; grandchildren, Jason, Christopher, Edward III; and a great-granddaughter, Skyler. Also surviving are nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 1999, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Carl Orlando of Harpersfield officiating. The burial will be in Kensico Cemetery at Valhalla.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home at their convenience Wednesday afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance between 2 and 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Grace's name to the Conesville Rescue Squad, Gilboa, N.Y. 12076.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford-Grand Gorge.

Paul C. Curtis
GUILFORD — Paul C. Curtis, 88, of Guilford, passed away Sunday, March 7, 1999, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

He was born Oct. 11, 1910, to the late Claude E. and Elizabeth (Lorimer) Curtis in Guilford.

Paul entered the United States Army and was a World War II veteran by serving his country from 1942-1945.

He obtained his bachelor's degree from Hartwick College and his master's degree from the State University at Albany in business education.

Paul married his wife, Thelma Hauschild, on Feb. 11, 1945, in East Guilford.

He was employed by the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier in Guilford for 25 years. Paul was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Guilford Center, American Legion, Norwich, and the Gilbertsville Masonic Lodge. Paul was the bookkeeper for the Methodist Church in Guilford, Dexheimer LD and Son Inc., and the old Agway in Guilford.

Paul is survived by his wife, Thelma Curtis of Guilford; two sons and daughter-in-law, Alan and Joann Curtis of Morris and Richard Curtis and his fiancee, Florence Brundege, of Walton; one daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Arthur Simon of Utica; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Byron Curtis, and a sister, Dorothy Nelson.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 11, 1999, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, officiating.

Friends may call Wednesday, March 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Burial will be in Guilford Center Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Guilford Emergency Squad or the Presbyterian Church of Guilford Center.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Raymond H. Gifford
ONEONTA — Raymond H. Gifford, 93, died Sunday morning, March 7, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

Ray was born Feb. 8, 1906, in Otego, the son of Elvin and Nettie (Hunt) Gifford.

He married Roselin Eaton on Oct. 19, 1929, in Morris.

Ray was a lifelong resident of the Oneonta area. He was a bookkeeper for the Association of American Education, which was on Elm Street until it moved to  Washington, D.C., in 1959. From 1959 through 1972, he built and remolded homes in the area. He was a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church and a member of its Mens Club, and was financial secretary, treasurer and usher at the church. He belonged to Oneonta Lodge No. 466 F&AM and was a former member of the Oneonta, Susquehanna Valley, New York state and National Grange.

Ray is survived by his wife of 69 years, Roselin Gifford; son and daughter-in-law, Conrad and Marie Gifford Sr. of Homosassa, Fla.; six grandchildren, Colleen Lamie of Batavia, Conrad Gifford Jr. of Pavilion, Theresa Marshall of  Texas, Veronica Gifford of Puerto Rico, Joseph Gifford of Cooperstown and Michael Gifford of Puerto Rico; and seven great-grandchildren.

Ray was predeceased by a son, Gordon Gifford in 1997.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The pastor of his church, the Rev. Stephen Heiss, will officiate. Mr. Gifford will be placed in the Bookhout private vault to await burial in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon Wednesday till the service time.

Expressions of sympathy in Ray's memory may be made to the Memorial Fund at Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Henrietta Brennan
ONEONTA — Henrietta Mary Brennan, 87, of Oneonta and formerly of Roxbury, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at the Fox Hospital Nursing Home.

She was born Jan. 11, 1912, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Charles Greene and Janet Phun.

She was first married to Herman Gerken on July 21, 1930. He died Dec. 2, 1946. She then married James A. Brennan on Oct. 17, 1947. He died Oct. 8, 1986.

She was a homemaker. She lived in Roxbury and Summerfield, Fla., in the winter for 17 years, and presently in Oneonta.

She was a member of the Nazarene in Florida. She enjoyed people and had many friends in this area and Florida.

She is survived by one son, George and Lois Gerken of  Pennsylvania; two daughters, Helen Goldman of Oneonta and Marlene and Charles Nagy of New Jersey and Roxbury; two brothers; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 11, 1999, at 1:30 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Dr. George Carpenter officiating.

Burial will be in the Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Friends may call at their convenience on Wednesday and family will be in attendance Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Bradley L. Delaney
STAMFORD — Bradley L. Delaney of Mountainview Estates, Stamford, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Oct. 14, 1936, in Blenheim, the son of Sabastian and Edna (Decker) Delaney.

He married Ella May Williams on Dec. 3, 1966, in Connecticut.

Brad worked for the village of Hobart Highway Department for 15 years. He was later employed by the village of Stamford Highway Department for 12 years, prior to retiring in 1995.

He is survived by his wife, Ella May Delaney of Stamford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 12, 1999, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 West Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. William Bray, of the Stamford Baptist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at their convenience on Friday from noon until service time at the Hall Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Stamford Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Pearl L. Chamberlin
SPRING HILL, Fla. — Pearl L. Chamberlin, 92, of Spring Hill, Fla., and West Oneonta, died Monday, March 8, 1999, in Spring Hill.

She was born Nov. 1, 1906, in Guilford, N.Y., the daughter of Daniel Finch and Ida Scofield Finch.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Betty Chamberlin of Deposit, N.Y.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara Kaplan of Spring Hill and Ida and Robert Hanrahan of West Oneonta; two sisters, Edith Lytle of Newark, N.Y., and Dorothy Pinson of Plant City, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Chamberln, in 1963.

Funeral and committal services will be held Saturday, March 13, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Zacharias Funeral Home, 78 Second St., Deposit, with the Rev. Frank Horbert officiating. Burial will be in the Hale Eddy Cemetery at Hale Eddy, N.Y., in the spring.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, from noon until 2 p.m., time of service.

Bertha A. Bond
WEST EXETER — Bertha A. Bond, 68, of Munson Road, died on Monday evening, March 8, 1999, in her home with her loving family at her bedside.

She was born on July 15, 1930, in Rileyville, Va., a daughter of Thelma Zook Aplin and the late Jesse Aplin Sr.

Bertha was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School.

On July 28, 1948, she married Elmer M. Bond in Beltsville, Md.

She was a resident of West Exeter since 1953, coming here from Beltsville, Md. For seven years she worked as a health-care aide for The Meadows in Cooperstown, retiring in 1987.

Bertha devoted her life to her family, she enjoyed cooking and baking, sewing, crocheting and needlecraft. Her leisure time was spent making doll clothes and afghans for her grandchildren.

Surviving besides her husband of 50 years, Elmer, and her mother, Thelma, are two sons, Philip Bond Sr. and Kenneth and his wife, Elizabeth Bond, all of West Exeter; two daughters, Linda Bond of Richfield Springs and Wanda and her husband, Richard Inman, of Mohawk; three brothers, Jesse J. and John Aplin, both of Maryland, and Carl Aplin of  West Virginia; one sister, Shirley Karr of Maryland; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Lou Pierce.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, March 11, 1999, at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Young officiating.

Mrs. Bond will then be placed in the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home private receiving vault to await burial in the West Exeter Cemetery later this spring.

Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the West Exeter Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Peter Tines
WALTON — Mr. Peter Tines, 61, formerly of Cherry Valley, passed away Monday, March 8, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, after a short illness.

He was born April 16, 1937, in Yugoslavia, the son of Joseph and Katharina Messman.

On June 6, 1987, he married Linda  Jones in Walton, she survives.

Mr. Tines worked for the Otsego County Highway Department for 29 years until retiring in 1998. He attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, Walton.

Mr. Tines is survived by his wife, Linda Tines of Walton; two sons, Steven Tines of Cherry Valley and Robert and his wife, Robin Tines, of Schoharie; a stepdaughter, Vicky Conklin and her husband, Tom, of Walton; three stepsons, Michael Goodrich and his wife, Esther, of Batavia, Patrick Goodrich and his wife, Dawn, of  Jefferson and Daniel Goodrich of Walton; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Katie and her husband, Ben Abbott, of Schuyler Lake, Irmgard and her husband, Ralph Buess, of Schoharie and Ilse Merrymann of Alexandria, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Karl Tines and Franz Tines; parents, Joseph and Katharina Tines; and his first wife, Marjorie Tines.

Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

There will be a private memorial service for family and friends at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, at the convenience of the family, conducted by the Rev. Edward Lowell, pastor of the Christian Missionary and Alliance Church of Walton. Interment will be in the spring in Walton Cemetery, Walton.

Contributions in Mr. Tines' memory may be made to the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, Walton, or the Diabetes Foundation.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Gaetano Messina
ONEONTA — Gaetano Messina, 79, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Jan. 4, 1920, in Canicatti, Italy, the son of Nicolo and Carmela (Insalaco) Messina.

He married Francesca Giardina on July 30, 1962, in Canicatti, Italy.

Guy moved to this area from Italy in 1962. For a period of 18 years, retiring in 1982, he worked on the D&H Railroad.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church. Guy especially enjoyed his relationship with his friends at the Italian American Club, along with taking great pleasure in making homemade wine.

He is survived by his wife, Francesca Messina of Oneonta; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Carman Wiedeman of Oneonta; two grandchildren, Gaetano and Frances Wiedeman of Oneonta; three brothers and a sister, all residing in Italy, Vincenzo, Angelo, Rosario and Giusseppina Messina. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins in Oneonta and Italy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, March 11, 1999, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at their convenience after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
