Herta B. Romano
PINEVILLE, N.C. — Herta B. Romano, 76, formerly of Sidney, passed away Monday, March 8, 1999, at the Lakeview Living Center, Pineville, N.C.

She was born Feb. 11, 1923, to the late William J. and Magdalene (Grashoff) Beyen in Bremen, Germany.

Herta married Peter P. Romano on June 3, 1944, in Sidney. Peter predeceased her on Sept. 17, 1992.

She was employed as a nurse at The Hospital, Sidney, and the school nurse for the Unadilla Central School.

Herta was a member of the First Congregational Church, Sidney, and a former member of the Charles L. Jacobi Post 183 American Legion Auxiliary, Sidney.

Herta is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, William L. Romano of Rockaway, N.J., and Ronald P. and Jody Romano of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Karl Burki of Sidney and Vicki and John Hills of Sidney; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 11, 1999, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Roanne MacEwan, of the First Congregational Church, Sidney, officiating. Friends may call at their convenience on Thursday prior to the service.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church or Sacred Heart Church, Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Eleanor Burlingham
EDMESTON — A memorial service for Eleanor Brooks (Nonie) Burlingham, of Pathfinder Village, Edmeston, who died Feb. 18, 1999, will be held on Saturday, March 13, 1999, at 6:30 p.m. at the Morgan- Jackson All Faiths Chapel, Pathfinder Village, with the Rev. Paul Towers officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Robert G. and Eleanor F. Burlingham Memorial Fund at Pathfinder Village, R.R. 1, Box 32A, Edmeston, N.Y. 13335-9798.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Jack H. Willis
ANDES — Jack H. Willis, 78, of Andes, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 13, 1920, in Escanaba, Mich., the son of Maude and Irwin Willis.

He married Marie J. Grunbeck on Sept. 7, 1946, in Stamford, Conn.

Jack was a World War II veteran serving in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was a licensed funeral director for more than 50 years. He was associated with the George T. Davis Memorial in New Rochelle for more than 30 years, before retiring to Andes.

Jack enjoyed hunting and his favorite hobby was making and restoring furniture. He was active in the town of Andes, serving two terms as one of Andes' tax assessors and on the Zoning Board of Appeals. He was a New York state hunting safety instructor for many years. He was commander of the American Legion in Andes, the James D. Calhoun Post 200 and chaplain of the Delaware County American Legion. He was a member of the Andes Community Men's Club, Tremperskill Rod and Gun Club, Andes Grange and the New Kingston Valley Grange and active member of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church in Andes.

Jack is survived by his wife, Marie Willis of Andes; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Randy Webster of Carver, Mass.; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael J. and Peggy Willis of Woodstock, Vt.; five granddaughters, Kristin, Megan and Jane Webster of Carver, Mass., and Katelyn and Kelley Willis of Woodstock, Vt.; and a grandson, Patrick Willis of Woodstock, Vt.; a sister, Rosemary Betke of Glenview, Ill.; two brothers, Donald Willis of Lansing, Mich., and Dale Willis of Belfast, Maine; several aunts; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 1999, at Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell officiating. Committal services will be in the spring at Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Calling hours will be Friday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, when the family will be present.

Contributions may be made in memory of Jack Willis to Catskill Area Hospice, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, or to the St. Ann's Church, Andes.

Funeral arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Audrey L. Norton
SOUTH VALLEY — Mrs. Audrey L. Norton, 58, passed away Wendesday, March 10, 1999, as the result of an automobile accident.

She was born July 11, 1940, in Middleburgh, the daughter of Emmett O. and Golda Mae (Cater) Schrom.

On Jan. 17, 1964, she married Robert L. Norton in Cherry Valley; he survives.

Mrs. Norton is fondly remembered as a person with an abundance of love for her family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, being around horses and crocheting. She had a giving heart and could always be counted on for a helping hand whenever needed. She is going to be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. May she always be remembered with great fondness.

Mrs. Norton worked throughout her life as a sewer of gloves and women's blouses. She had worked for a short time as a nurses aide at The Meadows, Cooperstown, and most recently whe was employed as a cook at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home, Cooperstown.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Robert L. Norton of South Valley; her daughters, Yvonne and husband, Jeff  White, of Decatur, Bonnie and husband, Edward Graig, and their children, Dustin and Travis of Pleasant Brook and Robin and husband, Thomas Young, and their children, Nicole and Court of South Valley; a sister, Rosalyn Haddon of South New Berlin; and sisters-in-law, Rosanna Schrom of Cooperstown and Edna Schrom of Troy.

Mrs. Norton was predeceased by her parents and brothers, Harvey, Otto and Charles Schrom.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, 1999, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Alan Miller, pastor of the First Christian Church, South Valley, officiating. Spring burial will take place in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley.

Calling hours will take place on Friday, March 12, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home.

Contributions in Mrs. Norton's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Ambulance Corp., Cherry Valley, N.Y. 13320.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Thomas Lloyd Patten
COOPERSTOWN — Thomas "Pat" Lloyd Patten, 81, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at The Meadows.

Tom was born in Oneonta on Oct. 15, 1917, the son of George and Nettie (Wright) Patten.

He was a United States Army veteran having served in Europe during World War II.

Lloyd was an employee of the city of Oneonta Water Department for 28 years and retired in 1979. He also worked at Tommy's Restaurant in the 1940s and played drums in a dance band in the 1930s and 1940s.

Lloyd is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and John Christensen of West Oneonta; a brother-in-law, Richard Barclay; a sister-in-law, Marie Patten; and 14 nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, George and Nettie Patten; two sisters, Gladys Wagnorn and Lucille Barclay; three brothers, George, Harold and Ralph Patten; and his longtime companion, Margaret "Maggie" Squires.

Funeral and committal services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 1999, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Fiske, retired Methodist Minister, officiating. Mr. Patten will be placed in the Bookhout private vault to await burial in the spring at Davenport Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the city of Oneonta Parks and Recreation Department for the upkeep of the parks.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Juliet Digasbarro
HIGHLAND FALLS — Juliet Digasbarro, 91, of Highland Falls, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

She was born Nov. 29, 1907, in Cornwall, the daughter of Gulia and Judita (Froner) Tomasi.

She was married to Pasquale Digasbarro, who predeceased her.

She is survived by her sons, Phillip Digasbarro of New Berlin and Pat Digasbarro of Stony Point; seven grandchilden of which two live locally, Vicki  Johnson of Edmeston and Michelle Couperthwait of Otego; 12 great-grandchildren; and her two sisters, Rina Dana and Elda Wierzbicki.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers.

A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 13, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Church, Highland Falls. Interment will take place at Peacedale Cemetery, Highland Falls.

Calling hours will be held Friday, March 12, at the William F. Hogan Funeral Home, Highland Falls.

Local arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

James Singmaster
BAINBRIDGE — James (Jim) Arthur Singmaster Jr., retired marketing executive of Monsanto Chemical Co., former owner of Harmonie Hall Antiques, and longtime resident of Bainbridge, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at Sidney Hospital in Sidney.

Mr. Singmaster was born in Palmerton, Pa., on April 7, 1908, the only child of Helen Jacks and James Arthur Singmaster.

He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Williams College, Mass., and later obtained an MBA from Harvard Business School.

He first worked for Mallinckrodt Chemical Co. in Missouri and then moved to Bainbridge to run the Borden Chemical Plant in 1941. After World War II, he joined Monsanto Chemical Co., initially as the organic sales representative for New York state, and eventually became the assistant to the vice-president of sales and marketing before retiring in 1967.

Mr. Singmaster was prominent in civic and charitable affairs in the Bainbridge community; he served on the Bainbridge Guilford school board and the BOCES board. He was also named Citizen of the Year by the Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce in 1994.

Mr. Singmaster was married to Marjorie (Peggy) Love Breyer for 52 years, and together they ran Harmonie Hall Antiques, until her death in 1984. He later married Blanche Eldred, who passed away in 1986. In April 1998, his children gathered in Bainbridge to celebrate his 90th birthday.

Mr. Singmaster is survived by four children of his first marriage, James A. III of Fremont,  Calif., David of London, England, Alan of Devon, Pa., and Karen Rowland of Orwell, Vt.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; as well as one stepchild of the second marriage, Marjorie Eldred Bossler.

At his request, there will be no viewing or service. A memorial service will be held at a later date in the spring.

Donations are suggested to the M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center at 1275 York Ave., New York, N.Y. 10021.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Irene Olga Sheetz
ONEONTA — Irene Olga Sheetz, 89, of Sheetz Road, Goodyear Lake, Oneonta, passed away at her beloved home on Wednesday, March 10, 1999.

She was born Oct. 19, 1909, in Walton, the daughter of George and Helena (Bohlman) Ervey.

Irene graduated from Richfield Springs High School and attended Hartwick College.

She married William Bradley Sheetz on July 5, 1931, in Oneonta.

Irene and her husband, Bill, had owned Irene's Vogue Beauty Shoppe and Webb Shoes Store at 164 and 189 Main St. in Oneonta, during the 1940's through the early 1970's.

Irene led an active life. She was county coordinator of the March of Dimes for several years; a member and officer of the DelOtseNango Kennel Club; president of the Fox Hospital Women's Guild; and president of the Women's Club of the First Presbyterian Church in Oneonta.

She was and always has been a loving wife, mother and grandmother until the end.

Irene is survived by her husband, Bill; and her daughter, Susan S. Bellino Patton of Oneonta; her grandson, Barry Wm. Bellino, and his wife, Shari, of Beaufort, S.C.; cousins, Ruth Foote of Otego, Dorothy Roote of Sidney and Bess DuMond and Dick Rutherford of Walton.

She was predeceased by her parents and brother, George "Bud" Ervey of Norwich.

There will be a private memorial service for her family and friends at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Andrea  White, Catskill Area Hospice chaplain, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date at the Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta.

The family heartfully thanks all of those who have comforted us in our time of need. A special thanks to the staff of Hospice which allowed Irene to remain at home until God's call.

Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice of Oneonta.

Alfred Hohreiter
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Alfred Hohreiter, 89, formerly of Bainbride, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at the home of his son in West Palm Beach, Fla.

He was born Oct. 20, 1909, to the late Theodore and Ida Spohn Hohreiter in Bainbridge.

Alfred married Addie L. Fletcher on Oct. 30, 1937, in Bainbridge. She predeceased him on March 27, 1985.

He owned and operated his own trucking company.

Alfred was also a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Bainbridge.

Alfred is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Vaughn and Tina Hohreiter of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Vincent, Luke, Elise and Gabriel.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and William Hohreiter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, March 13, 1999, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Bainbridge, at 11:30 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Donald Bourgeois, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call Friday, March 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.
